Thoughts on a double name (ex. Ann Marie) as a first name for a girl? I have two family names that my parents considered using for me, but never did and as a kid I hated that it wasn’t my name. Turns out my husband also loves the name and wants to use it for our daughter but I’m not sure how I feel about it now. Would it always be annoying to have a double name? Do we give her a middle name too? Just looking for some perspective because I’m too far in my own head 😂
@sbalkw91 I like it! Such a pretty classic name. My sil has a double name with a middle name. I only judge names with made up spelling to make your child unique and special 🙄
@sbaljw91 My niece is Anne-Marie with a middle name. Her mom also has a double first name. They love it. It was only an issue for the mom when she tried to change her name when she got married, but she got it worked out.
@sbalkw91 I know a girl in the town I grew up with and was called Anne-Marie! I never thought anything of it! That was just her name! I think if you guys love it then go with it! And I think I would still give a middle name! But my kids each have 2 middle names so more of my own personal preference.
Hubby has 2 middle names. He thinks it's cool, but it always seems to cause us trouble. Automated computer systems don't have enough letters allocated to fit two names, so his "middle name" is usually the first name and a remnant of the second - and it's different for every system (i.e. his "middle" name on his license is different than his "middle" name in the computer system at work, etc).
We know what we are having, but I'll throw both our picks up here for the fun of it since I'm not really sold on the first names for either: Girl - Aspen Vesta - Vesta is my middle name and was my great-grandmother's name Boy - Barrett Roy - Roy being my husband's grandfather's name
Weighing in on other comments: I think a 2 name first name is super cute, and I knew a Mary Margret and a Mary Claire that went by both names and never seemed weird. Also, @bg122785 Benjamin is one of my all time favorite names!
Thank you all for your help! It’s nice to get out of my own head and hear from other people! We’re not planning to tell names until she’s born so I can’t talk about it with anyone other than my hubs!
We still haven't figure out a boy's name! Though at this point I'm not too concerned about it since the AS is in 11 days and we'll know for sure then if we even need to worry about it! But we were talking about names, and there's a Ukrainian name H blurted out. It's Severen. Pronounced exactly how you would think. I'm still stuck on Sebastian as a first name. I was like "Oof, that's a mouthful, Sebastian Severen? Sounds like something out of Harry Potter!" So we've been calling baby SebSev. I also told H that if we named a kid Severen, that I willbe singing the Potter Puppet Pals "Mysterious Ticking Noise" song, but with Severen in place of Severus.
We still don’t know what we’re having, but if we have a boy then DH will most likely push for him to be the third, as he is a second. Which, would make his given name James. It isn’t my first choice, but there’s nothing wrong with it. I’m struggling with what he would actually be called as DH is called his given name. I dislike Jimmy and Jamie. I do like Jack, but with our last name it sounds like an alcoholic beverage, it’s not Daniels, but has that kind of vibe. Opinions?
@doodleoodle I’m in the same boat with the boy name. Given name will be Theodore. Hubs’ Dad is Ted and hubs goes by a nickname of his middle name. Theo and Teddy seem to be the options here and I’m not SUPER in love with either, although both are fine. We’ll see. (And we haven’t got any start on the girl’s name, so aaahhh!)
We just found out we’re having our 3rd girl and we’re struggling so much this time to find a name. DD1 is Rosalie Evelyn DD2 is Caroline Adele
This one we’re considering Lucille (Lucy) Rosemary Isobel Rosemary Alice Rosemary Claire Rosemary
For Lucille we are arguing about Lucille vs. Lucy. I think Lucille flows better with our middle name choice but DH doesn’t want Lucille, just Lucy. Isobel we disagree on the spelling. I love this traditional spelling and with the “o” but DH prefers Isabelle but that spelling makes me grind my teeth, not to mention it reminds me too much of Isabella and Twilight, and since we have a Rosalie I’d like to avoid a Twilight theme. Which brings me to my major problem with Alice. DH loves the name. I really like the name, but again, Twilight. Claire is another name we both like but after binging Outlander neither of us can say “Claire” without a horribly fake Scottish accent.
Ugh. Names are hard.
PS. Rosemary is DH’s grandma’s name and using that as a middle name is about the only thing we can seem to agree on.
@0hmymadelin3 I like Alice the best out of your options and even though I read Twilight several times in high school the Alice and Rosalie connection never occurred to me. But, in my experience, it’s going to nag at you forever so you should cross it off your list. As far as Lucille/Lucy goes, DH and I had the exact same disagreement so I crossed it off our list. I can’t get behind nicknames as names. Suggesting: Nora, Elizabeth, Margaret, Margot, and Anastasia.
@Swiftlet that is too funny because Theodore with the nickname Teddy is one of my top picks for a boys name. Is your husband set on going with the third?

**lurking** I've known a few people that were the third and they went by Trey.
@doodleoodle what are the chances?! He has always said, even from the early days of dating, that he'd want a boy to be the third. If I hated the name I'd be stomping my feet more but it's definitely not a bad name. Of course I have numerous names that I love for boys but with the other one being a girl I'm a bit stuck haha.
@ohmymadelin3 I love twilight and I didn’t think of it at all with Alice and Rosalie. I love Lucille with the nn Lucy. I’m a fan of a longer first name with a nickname though
@Swiftlet I love Theodore/Teddy. It’s on our long list. My oldest son is the third. It’s not my fav name but I let my h win that one.
I have fallen head over heels in love with the name Gemma. My older girls are named Penelope and Zoe. My sister has warned me that if I don’t want to stick with Greek names that I should at least choose a name that’s ends in the ie sound so that DD3 doesn’t feel left out. What do you guys think?
@doodleoodle, do you and your H have names that end in “ee” sound? If you all do then maybe someone would notice but otherwise I don’t think anyone would notice or care.
@jvk2012 We don't have names ending in that sound and I honestly didn’t realize that we were creating a theme in that when we named Zoe. It was a total coincidence.
@jvk2012 That’s pretty cute. DH and both of husband siblings have names beginning with J.
DH’s name is James, and he is a second. If this baby were a boy he would have been the third. This is very likely our last child and since DH was called Jimmy as a boy I thought that the name Gemma would be sort of meaningful in that way.
Re: Baby names?!
Before we decided to name out girl Elliot the girl name was going to be Edith
