The Great Question Thread

Re: The Great Question Thread

  • @charbabymama, I told my principal when I was almost 11 weeks. He called to tell me I had to move rooms and at the end of the convo I was like “btw, I’m pregnant.” He can be awkward in person so I was glad it was a phone convo. He was so stressed about all the changes happening in my building he was just like “ok, congrats, we’ll deal with that later” lol. I wanted to go public at 13 weeks after an ultrasound so I had to tell him before that.

  • @charbabymama I texted my boss (mostly because I rarely see her in person) and she was very supportive. I was a little nervous as she’s one of those very uh, business-like, women but it went well.
  • @charbabymama my boss is in a different city so I just called him and told him at 6 weeks before I went on a business trip with him. He was excited for me, even though I’ll be on maternity leave for our busy season. Good luck!

  • @charbabymama I told work and HR at 12 weeks. It honestly went very well. I'm a manager and well the first manager to become pregnant so it was a bit nerve wracking leading up to it. My CEO was super cool about it and was happy for me. I wen't directly to HR afterwards and she gave me a big hug. Good luck!!!

  • Do your usually get another round of bloodwork done when you go in for your anatomy scan? I had bloodwork done at my 8 week ultrasound appointment which was also my first Dr visit. Everything was great so I didn’t think I’d need it done again. However I’m hearing some people mention it. Is bloodwork a routine part of this ultrasound visit too? If so, what are they looking for?
  • @taylor2020 I haven't had my anatomy scan yet (it's scheduled for next week at my MFM), but I did have blood drawn at my regular OB 2 weeks ago when I was 17 weeks. It was part of the Quad Screen test to scan for certain genetic abnormalities and neural tube defects like Trisomy 21 and Spina Bifida.

@taylor2020 it depends on what type of testing you’re doing, if you’re doing any at all. I had blood drawn at 12 and 16 week appointments but I won’t have any at my anatomy scan. That’s just an ultrasound for me.

  • @taylor2020 It has been 7 years since my first pregnancy but I remember getting blood work done later in my pregnancy, but it wasn't at the anatomy scan. So far with this one, I have only had bloodwork at my 10week appointment.
  • @taylor2020 I’ve had my anatomy scan. They didn’t do any bloodwork for me.
  • I just had some bloodwork done at wk 17. Going back wk 20 for ultrasound

  • Ok here’s a weird one... are puffy scars a thing that happen when pregnant? Like once very flat scars are just super puffy? They don’t hurt but just look so gross lol.

  • @brookert615 I haven't noticed that (I just checked all my big scars haha). I wonder if it's fluid retention just pocketing around slightly puckered skin areas?
  • @Swiftlet Good call! I’m going to ask my doctor at our next appointment but it’s just making me curious! I couldn’t find anything online either!

  • @brookert615 the ones on my stomach from my gall bladder and ovarian torsion do look a little puffier but I just got done cleaning (I'm hot and sweaty) so maybe that has something to do with it.  I don't normally check them so I don't know if they always do that but I'm going to keep a closer eye on it now.  Tomorrow morning when MH gets home I'll have him look at the big ones on my back.

  • Interesting! I noticed yesterday after I was cleaning lol! It seemed like they got less puffy overnight. Just something weird! We will get to the bottom of this 😂.

  • @TennisLove30 I just got over a cold. I suffered through. Being sick while pregnant sucks.
  • @TennisLove30 @therealbitts suggestions are on point. Also with a sore throat I just eat honey by the spoonful. Honey is a freaking miracle! :)

  • @TennisLove30 feel better soon!
  • @TennisLove30 I’m suffering through a bad cold right now. I’ve been MIA for a couple days as a result. This is definitely one of the worst colds I’ve had in years. I read that colds can be more severe and last longer when you’re pregnant. Ugh!! I hope you feel better soon!
  • @lanie1000, I hope you feel better too!
  • @TennisLove30 & @lanie1000 I’m so sorry to hear you’re suffering through colds  :s I got one in first trimester (while on vacation, too) and it was MISERABLE 😩. The suggestions above helped. Plus these little Vick’s inhalers - that just let you stick a thing in your nose and “breathe” in (as much as possible, which was not much for me) and get Vick’s right up that stuffy mess- were helpful to get past the misery.
  • ugh my daughter had a absolutely horrible hacking cough this morning - I hope I don't join you ladies but glad to have this thread to reference. The Vick's inhaler sounds scary though!

  • @um_thor oh I love using those when I'm sick! They help for a little bit.
I've been waking up sort of sniffly but H was just sick and is in the "feeling better but has the lingering cough" stage.
  • @um_thor those Vick’s inhalers are amazing!
  • Also feeling under the weather, but I think it’s allergy induced. I had asthma as a child and it has a comeback when I’m pregnant so thats making it a little worse. Thankfully I was able to get a dr app in pretty fast and get a prescription for an inhaler.
  • I got sick in July with a head cold that went to my chest. I haven't had nausea this entire pregnancy but I was coughing so much I was vomiting anyway. Dr gave me antibiotics, and a list of meds i was allowed to take that included sudafed cold and flue.
  • A Neti Pot is great for a stuffy nose.
How about homeopathy? This is safe for pregnancy and works great.

  • @rikiteacup Agreed re: the Netipot!!!! First time I ever used one was when I got sick in my first trimester and couldn’t use medicine. It was one of the BEST tools for clearing me up.
  • When did the discomfort in bending over happen for you ladies? I noticed some discomfort this morning (17w1d) when bending over to tie my shoes. Granted, I am also very overweight, so that might play some role, but thought it could also be baby since it's still pretty low.
  • @babyroma I'm 19 weeks and I don't have issues bending over yet.
