  • We’re thinking James for a boy. Samantha {Sam}, Alice or Ruby for a girl... maybe.

I don’t think we’re going to find out if it’s a boy or a girl until he/she’s born though, so I have some times.
  • We are thinking Emmett Christopher for a boy And maybe Bonnie for a girl or Nora, or Harper.

I've always kept a name list, you just never know when a new pet will come along LOL

My husband has given me some seriously awful name suggestions so he only gets veto power of my list.  If its a boy its getting my husbands middle name (Gean).  We have a very long last name so I want a 2 syllable first name.

Boy - Timber, Lyle, Russell, Denver, Denim (this one is kind of a joke because it would go so well with the middle name :D

Girl - Jolene, Dolly, Raleigh, Clark,

  • @mamakelly18 - for what it's worth, I gave DD1 my middle name and if #3 is a girl, her middle name will be my first name. You do you, sister.

  • I have my names picked out, DH isn't sold on them butttt... I don't care.

I like Ava for a girl and Mason for a boy. Still need middle names though.
  • Names are always a heated topic over here I suggest a ton, DH hates them all but never suggests any. We are not big on family names, which pisses off my MIL (bonus!). I have ruled out one of my favorite names for each gender because I don't like how they flow with our last name, Jude and Violet. And another from each gender because they are too similar to our current kids names, Elijah and Aria. I really like longer names that can be shortened, DD is Cambria Grace, we call her Cami or Cami Grace. DS is Ezra Samuel, no obvious nns so he ends up being Ez, Ezzy, Ezzybez, etc... because I feel the need to shorten everything.

Our front runner for a boy is Josiah. I really like Zachary, Silas and Theodore as well.

This summer the name Josephine popped up and that grew on us with the nn JoJo but DD and her friends are obssessed with JoJo Siwa right now so that might be a deal breaker for me. We have no other girl names in mind.

We haven't talked names yet this pregnancy and have no middle names on a list. Since we are team green this time we will need one of each.

  • Why is it so hard to find boys names?! Haha glad I'm not the only one having trouble!
Though... I DO have a bunch of boy names I like .but DH hates them all.
I like multisylable, soft, elegant names. He likes short and harsh sounding names.

Also, DH background is French. So it's important to him that our kids have 2 middle names and that they are meaningful. Which means I don't just get to pick middle names that sound pretty with the first name :(  (he wants them named after family)
And also, the names have to sound good in French and English. Which is hard, because I'm picky (I dont like names with dropped sounds when pronounced in French).
And I don't want popular names, but I don't want wacky names either. (Even though the boy names I've had on my list for 10+ years are suddenly popular).

We have a BUNCH of girl options (but there is 1 I REALLY want). There was one boy we ended up agreeing on last time, but now I'm not sold.

Maybe we will just name them "boy" or "girl" like in that stupid netflix movie 😂
  • @Avrilmai what is the app? That sounds super fun!

  • @Allycat11 we have the same taste in names!! My top girl names are violet (my gma’s name) and Josephine nn JoJo. I also love Georgina nn Georgie or GiGi

Me son is Theodore (nn Theo) and I love Ezra but it doesn’t go with our last name. I’ve also had Silas on our list at one point. I also dig Sullivan (sully), Knox, Beau, and Sebastian (seb, sebby, bash)
  • @jmesue1030 great choices! I hate when you love a name that doesnt work well with your last name. Sebastian is another great name, one of my cousins named one of her sons that. Sullivan is a good one I had not thought of! I also hadnt thought of Georgina but I love it, especially with the nn Gigi! For girls I am a big fan of long, feminine names with the option to have a cutesy nn.

  • @Allycat11 Agreed. I have the same preference for both boys and girls— long classic name with cute/cool nickname.

My husband and I have used the app BabyName which might be the one @Avrilmai was referencing. It is pretty fun. We haven’t really gotten to the point where we feel ready to really choose names yet (this is actually the first convo I’ve had about names this pregnancy) but I’m sure once we do we’ll get back to using that app.
  • @jmesue1030 we have not really talked names this time yet either. A week ago today is when we finally allowed ourselves to start getting attached. Baby talk has been very minimal this time.

  • I love the name Rosalie for a girl - nn's Rose, Rosie, Ro or RoRo. I also like Abigail. I'd want a one syllable middle name: Anne, Dawn, Grace.

Our last name starts with J, and I would rather baby's first name start with a different letter, which makes it hard to find a good boy's name! I feel like there are so many solid J names for boys (James, Justin, John, Joseph, Jared, Jackson, etc.). I think Andrew and Cameron are on the top of my list at the moment, no idea for middle names.

  • This is more story/rant than name picking, but I feel the need to share. Feel free to skip. Background: in my tradition we don't name after the living but we do name after the dead.
With DS#1 I kept trying to get DH to discuss names, and he kept saying we have time there's no need to discuss this until your 7th month. So finally when I hit 7 months I made him have a discussion and we picked a name. (We knew what we were having.) Then 2 days before DS was born an important Rabbi who was close with DH's family passed away. So while we kept the original middle name we picked we replaced the first name with this Rabbi's name. (It fits perfectly I cannot picture my little son with the original name.)
So with DS#2 everytime I tried to get DH to discuss names he said remember what happened last time, there's no point in talking about it this early. Finally a week before my due date I told him we don't need to pick a name but we need a top 3 list. So we did that, and then when DS#2 showed up, the name at the top of the list fit, so we used it.
Once again DH is refusing to discuss names, since we're finding out I can understand waiting until the anatomy scan, but I know he won't want to talk about it even then.
Also, if we do finally have a girl it will be all drama. It would be the first girl in DH's family in 3 generations, and since we got married my FIL has been dropping hints that MIL wants a granddaughter named after her grandmother. The thing is my MIL is the most laid back person in the world, and probably would love it, but be ok if we didn't. And my grandmother passed away when I was 4 and I have planned on naming after her basically my entire life. Every time I mention it DH tells me I worry too much, and stop thinking about it because it might be moot anyway. But I can't stop thinking about it!! I love my MIL and would like to make her happy, but am very attached to my grandma's name.
  • @msrosek91 that’s tough!! I think go with the name you’ve always wanted to use... I would worry that you might feel regret if you use a name just to please someone else. Any way you can honor your MIL’s GM with the middle name?
  • edited January 2019
    @mrosek91 I second the first/middle compromise suggestion!
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • Our list has evolved, and now we've added a rating system.

    + means we both like
Nothing means only one of us likes
    - means it's been vetoed or MN only (but keeping track so we don't re-discuss if we forget)

    + Rosalie
+ Charlotte nn Charlie (family name)
    + Adalind
    Bridget
    Ella
    Magnolia nn Maggie
    Josephine

    - Genevieve
    - Adele (middle name only)

    + Grant Lee
    + Rhett
    Charlie (family name)

    Daniel (family name)
    Oliver
    Jack

    - Sebastian
    - Declan
    - Connor
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • I like the compromise idea, both my boys have one name from my side, and one from DH's, but my grandma had 2 names, not sure how I would pick which one, and I don't think I want to saddle my kid with 3 names.
But now that I got the rant off my chest, I'm really going to try and stop thinking about it at least until the anatomy scan. Because honestly, even though they say every pregnancy is 50/50 I don't think my husband is capable of making girls.
  • *Long rant*
In my culture middle names are picked from both sides of the family starting with the father's side, and also depending on gender. So first DD gets named after paternal grandma, second DD after maternal grandma, first DS after paternal grandpa, second DS after maternal grandpa. From the 3rd going on they're named after the siblings of the couple, alternating sides again begining from the paternal.

I was okay with this because I thought if I they're 2 DDs that's DH's mum and my mum, if 2 DSs his dad and my dad (expecting twins).

Until I found out yesterday that apparently the culture also holds that twins should be named from one side of the family, in this case being first borns, DHs side 😭😭😭
Worse still nobody seems to agree on whether the second twin gets named after DH's sibling or either of his parents siblings (confusing, I know)

Am not close to his extended family and would absolutely hate to name my LO after someone I don't even know..😭😭😭
I really would just like to be able to name them after both our parents
    *End of rant*
  • Ooooh @nimo-ad that’s tough! Any chance you can talk to your husband and maybe his family to voice your concerns and see if there’s any wiggle room, or would be major family drama? Especially since you have a sweet positive reason (you want to name your babies after both your parents) instead of just a negative one (don’t want to name your babies after some randos lol).
  • @cato99 LOL at the negative reasons bit 😁 I will ask him to talk to his family about it and just hope there won't be any drama, atleast he seems to be okay with either arrangement so I guess thats a plus... thanks ❤️
  • I am bringing this thread back because a question came up in our house today.

DH and I really like the name Gianna nn Gia for a girl. We love the sound, the meaning, it flows with the other kids names and it flows with our last name. The only downside is that it definitely is of Italian origin and neither of us have a drop of Italian in us to our knowledge.

So, deal breaker based on origin? Or origin does not matter?

  • @Allycat11, I love Gianna! I don’t think it matters at all. A name is a name. For a while we were going to use Mateo which is very Spanish and I didn’t think it mattered. I don’t find Gianna to be too Italian not to use (not that I think there are many names too whatever not to use). But it’s such a pretty name!

    *Live, Love, Laugh, Learn*

  • @Allycat11 - I don't think the orgin matters in this day and age. Just make sure it fits your last name.  For example, if our last name was my maiden name (ironically, very Italian), we probably would have named DD2 "Natalia" rather than Natalie.  But with my husband's WASPy last name, Natalie made way more sense.

  • @hey_clever_girl NO WAY. That's our girl name! Ava is my number one and Suzanne is after my late grandma, who was the best woman in my life. Crazy! We're probably having another boy though, haha!
  • @hey_clever_girl love it! Classic and pretty.
  • @Allycat11 I do think Gianna sounds very Italian but it’s also very pretty and you know I love nn Gigi!! If you love it, go for it! My dad didn’t like nn Theo for our son because he said it sounded Greek and we aren’t Greek but nobody has ever said that since he’s been born— and I love his name, it fits his perfectly!
  • We've decided on our first name- Xavier. My husband has talked about his love for the name for a while. Luckily I love it too and it goes well with our last name.

As for the middle name, he's leaving it up to me. I'm stuck between James (after my late grandfather) and John (after my dad). I like the way James sounds, but leaning towards John.

@lilmamabebe3 OMG. Name twins! I picked Suzanne because it was my late mother's favorite Leonard Cohen song. We chose Ava because we liked the way it sounded with Suzanne!

    @jmesue1030 thank you! <3

    @Allycat11 I have a cousin named Gianna (pronounced "john-ah" with a soft "j") and I like it!
