Re: Weekly Randoms 11/19-11/23

  • @danixbanani24 yeah, same with mine. I got mine right before moving to the US in 2015 so I’m up to date, but he doesn’t know that since it’s never come up. My online account gives me reminders when there’s something I need to get (flu shot, pap etc), and every other thing has been brought up during appts besides the tdap. There’s been a reminder for me to get it for months now. So weird!

  • TDap and flu for all!! Luckily both sides of the family all did it for DD and she will be 18mos so no need for tDap again. But they'll do flu.

DD ended up having respiratory issues and landed in the hospital just before 3mos with bronchiolitis and needed a small surgery a month later for laryangomalacia, which is when they found her murmur. Which led to open heart surgery just past 1st bday. So NO ONE in my family or friends questions any medical precautions I tell them about.

I'm not a no touching, hand sanitizer every 2 mins person, but i am a vaccinate or don't even think about it person.
    TW:
    1 infant loss
    8/17: Our daughter was born
8/18: Our daughter kicked open heart surgery ass
2/19: We lost our son to Prader-Willi/Paradoxical Vocal Cord/ Noonans at 6wks old
    4/26/2020: EDD for baby #3!!!
  • First of all I just learned that although this is my mother's fifth grandchild, she does not know that a flu shot and tdap shot are needed for visiting the baby. She is a special woman! Secondly my DS decided that this week was a good time to get his bottom 2 year molars, which in our house means poor eating, overall fussiness and irritability, oh and poor sleeping for naps and waking up in the morning before 6 am. Why?!
  • So my OB hasn’t given me the Tdap shot...is that weird? I don’t recall having it with my first either...
I'm going to ask at my next appointment since mine hasn't mentioned it either.  Google tells me it's every 10 years but mentioned pregnant woman/ people around a baby should get one no matter what so...?

  • @okayestmom12 yep according to my OB anyone within 10 years is clear but for pregnant women it’s necessary with each pregnancy. They also seem to just default to telling people to get it since I guess it’s not a super common vax after teenage years? I got my last at 27 but maybe I just really like vaccines lol.
  • @danixbanani24- Did you have your 28 week appt already?  That’s the one where I got it both times.

My MW said tdap vaccine will happen at my next appointment since they prefer not to do tdap and rhogam in the same appointment if they can avoid it (and I had rhogam at my appointment on Monday). I’ll be 31 weeks. I’ve gotten it between 28-32 weeks during every pregnancy.

ETA: they will do it even if your tdap is up to date because it gives the baby better antibodies to tdap and whooping cough (pertussis) is can be fatal or debilitating to a NB.

  • @jgrodo We just told our respective parents no t-dap and flu shot, no seeing the baby! My parents are up to date because my brother has two little guys. DH's parents went and got vaccinated right away (they both work in the medical/public health field so it was an easy sell). The only one we're waiting on is my SIL, but she'll do it because thems the rules!

I'm getting my t-dap at my 28 week appointment, which is right after I take my GT test...THAT should be a fun day
  • @sjnsjnsjn I had my 30 week appt just this week! lol I'll ask about it again - I never asked my parents to get the tdap etc but maybe I will this year since it is square in the middle of winter.

  • @Venessa88 Do we have the same FIL?? Actually, vaccination is probably the one thing he agrees is important (phew), but we definitely try not to talk about a lot of stuff, except that he LOVES to bring it up. Everyone, including MIL and all of his friends are sick of it though and aren’t afraid to say so. The biggest one is denying climate change which he’s obsessed about. It’s tiresome at best.

  • My mw said the tdap recommendation during preg even if youre up to date is fairly new, cant remember but maybe a few years.
Dh are getting flu shots this weekend, mil already got hers!
  • I had no idea pregnant women should take it again anyway! I’ll ask my OB about it next week.

This is me. My last Tdap was when I was pregnant in 2013. Noone has said anything about it to me. I go to mw 11/28. I'm just going to call Monday and make sure they have it ready for me.

  • @danixbanani24- I’m not sure whooping cough is a time of year specific disease, but it is freakishly on the rise and having outbreaks all over. My OB told me this week that they just got a health alert that it is in Chicago public schools right now.  😱
  • I've been given new tdap with each pregnancy and mine have been 4-6 years apart.

My oldest will be 5 in May and it was standard to have it every pregnancy then - but Seattle area tends to be on the forefront of medical recommendations.

  • Tdap - should get during every pregnancy so the antibodies are passed on to baby. They should last in baby around 6 weeks and then baby gets their first dose at 8 weeks.

My OB said the pertussis (whooping
cough) part of the shot only lasts for 5-6 years. The tetanus part is 10, so keep that in mind for people who say they’re not due for their tdap yet. Of course you can ask your own dr. This is what my OB told me with DD.
  • @madreofdragons I was actually listening to a song from empire records the other day! That movie is a true gem.

Happy thanksgiving to all you americans! Enjoy the day!
  • I now must know what song @cali1710. I actually heard the Gin Blossom one yesterday.
  • @sjnsjnsjn that’s a good point! I’ll ask about it at my next appt.

why is it that when it’s a school day my DS can sleep until like 8 o’clock and I have to drag him out of bed but on weekends or days like today where we can sleep in he’s up at 6:30? Ugh

  • Must be a universal kid thing. Mine are always up at the crack of dawn on the weekends and dragging on school days. I'm just thankful that DS didn't wake himself up coughing at 2 am last night!
  • OMG I must have jinxed it but posting and my kids didn’t get up until after 7  <3

  • @madreofdragons yup it was the gin blossoms one too! Love that darn song
  • @eggsandwich2019 that's awesome! That's a good rule! I think I'm going to ask about frequency with exposure. I really don't want to expose him to all these things bc my in-laws are just in their own little world
  • @sjnsjnsjn I was thinking about doing that. Do you think they would have a specific frequency of saying people should be vax'd?  I was debating precalling to get answer and then ask again in front of him. I really want to be no vax no baby period.

@megpants209 great response- can you talk to my jnlain- and hubs for me, hehe

I know someone mentioned not letting people kiss hands or head. Is it kissing either or touching? Is head or just face?

Everyones responses is making me feel .way more confident about pushing with the vax or no baby!

Can I just say this app can be so hard and funky on my phone.
  • @kayjay44 that sounds like An interesting hokidho meal hehe.

Ohh and my OB told me each pregnancy (this my first one) regardless if time between pregnancies for the tdap
  • @jgrodo- If your OB is like mine, she will have the “everyone needs flu and TDAP” perspective. I would def ask and then bring him to an appt and ask again in front of him. If that doesn’t work, yes, repeat with peds consult.  Our pediatrician had/has the same view.
  • @sjnsjnsjn ah good to know, that's what I'll do! Thanks!!! It actually half came up and he was like depends in frequency and I said no shot no baby- well see how much flack I get later from him.  I'm totally going to get answer then ask in front :)   Still have to call to get pediatrician, on the Todo list ;)

  • Happy Thanksgiving
  • @jgrodo at the hospital we tell everyone no kissing the baby on face or hands for 12 weeks. Obviously germs of all sorts are spread this way but particularly herpes. You do not have to have an active cold sore to give hsv type 1 to babies. The virus occasionally sheds with no symptoms.

One  of my labor nurse coworkers first son died because someone spread herpes type 1 to him. He died at 14 days old. It is very very difficult for newborns to fight off this virus so to be safe, no kissing on hands or face from anyone even Mom and dad. There a lot of things I will compromise on but this isn’t one.
  • @lindseybick- That is such a sad and awful story, so much more so because it is so easy to prevent just by people keeping themselves to themselves!!
  • My kid just grossed herself out with her turkey farts.
  • @lindseybick is kissing the head ok if it's not the face? Is touching the hand ok if hands are washed?

That is so sad. Thank you for sharing
