  • @anna2019 they do that if you had it done at a facility other than your OB's office like at the hospital or an imaging facility.  The techs are not allowed to technically discuss anything with you.

  • @mrskoz428 it’s actually standard practice here in Ontario to not have the dating scan unless you’re uncertain of your ovulation dates. with My first, I had the dating scan, but didn’t with my second, so doctors aren’t consistent with this it seems. I believe you could probably get an elective ultrasound if you really wanted to see earlier.

Also, if you’re carrying multiples, they’ll know well before your 20 week scan. There will be multiple heartbeats and you will grow faster than a singleton.

  • @expandcontract Yeah that makes sense, just seems different than when I had my son!

@zuuls_mom @anna2019  Such cute little peanuts! Yay!
  • @mrskoz428 I’m up in Canada, and even here it seems that the standard varies a bit depending where you’re at.  But I won’t have an ultrasound until the 18-20 week anatomy scan either, unless something comes up before that to warrant one.  I’m a 3rd time mom (4th pregnancy, had a miscarriage prior to my first daughter).  With my first and second pregnancies I did have a dating ultrasound, but my clinic did away with those by the following year for most low-risk pregnancies.  We have previously opted out of genetic testing, so never saw our second until the 20ish week mark.

As far as multiples go, your OB or midwife is well trained and they will probably detect a second HB with the Doppler prior to your US if there is one.  Which would jump you into a higher risk category automatically.  If twins run in your family, mention it.

I know it’s not the easiest, but try to trust that baby is growing and developing as he/she should.  Once you hear the heartbeat it will fee so much more real, and if there is a reason for concern I’m sure your dr will send you for an earlier scan.

  • @mcewen3 I messaged my CNM) which will probably be answered by a nurse) to verify when the first ultrasound was and if I could possibly have a dating scan. It’s at least worth asking. My sister gave birth at the same hospital I’m going through and she always had ultrasounds when she announced her pregnancies. If they say no, I suppose it’s no big deal, i just worry because I was told I’d hear the heart beat at my 13 week appointment which is a little early to hear via Doppler, so I’m not even sure I will.

I would be surprised if you can’t hear the HB at your 13 week appt.  I don’t want to give incorrect information, it’s been 6 years since my first tri with DD1, but I’m sure I heard her HB around 11 weeks. (I didn’t see my Dr until 12ish weeks with DD2 but I also heard her HB at that appt)  My midwife this time around said she likes to book first appts for 10-11 weeks so that it’s late enough to hear a HB but early enough to discuss genetic testing, so I think my memory is accurate.

  • @mcewen3 every where I look says Doppler can’t pick up a heartbeat until 15 weeks but I could also be wrong! :-) We will see what they say when they message back. Thanks for the information.

  • It can vary by person, but most people hear the heartbeat on the Doppler anywhere between 10-12 weeks, rarely as early as 8

  • @DuchessOfCambridge weird! Maybe online resources say later just so people don’t expect anything? My next appointment is November 2 and I’ll be around 13.5 weeks by then.

My doctor told me they will be able to hear heartbeat at next appt — I’ll be almost 11 weeks

    ETA: heartbeat via Doppler
  • @DuchessOfCambridge very possible! We’ll see what they say when they get my message. :-)

  • Haven't been able to open this thread for a week because my first appointment got pushed back a week, but I go later today!

Just want to say Congrats on Twinning @sac276!

@GeorgiaGirl1230 you are winning for clearest 8 week pic so far!! I'm 8 weeks 5 days today, so I hope having U/S pushed back a week at least comes with the benefit of a clear pic like yours!!!
  • Excited for you @purplejoymommy! Have a wonderful appointment!

  • @jprb0630 I would trust the doctors, but I know it's so hard to not worry. Did they schedule a follow up u/s? That seems like a good heartbeat for 6w3d, and ovulation may have been later if your cycles are longer.

  • @jprb0630 with your long length and irregularity of menstraul cycles, it is very possible to be only 6w3d. Your due date is usually more accurate based on date of conception, not necessarily the 1st day of your LMP. Based on date of conception, I’m actually due 3-5 days sooner than my LMP due date. I wouldn’t be too concerned!

  • @jprb0630 - my first pregnancy was like that. I have very irregular cycles and they couldn’t find a heartbeat using the doppler at my first appointment when I should have been 10 weeks. Waited all day for an ultrasound and found baby measuring 8w3d. Daughter is perfectly healthy and will be 5 in December. A strong heartbeat is a great sign. Try to trust the tech, and call to get a follow up appointment scheduled if you haven’t already.
  • Thank you for sharing & lowering my worries a bit! They have not set another ultrasound until 12 weeks, which is in 6 weeks now...I don't think I can wait that long. I'm trying to figure out when I actually ovulated then, because I took an LH test on August 25th & had it come back positive.
  • @purplejoymommy Nice! So glad to hear you had a great appointment!

  • @jprb0630 sometimes LH strips will show the hormone in your system for a while. What I have learned (from my first who is a fertility specialist) is that while the first LH strip that comes back positive is great and tells you to start trying, you should continue to do the deed until 2 days after the LH strips are no longer positive. I actually had positive LH strips for 3.5 days until the hormone started to decline (meaning ovulation would occur with 12-24 hours). DH and I were like rabbits for a solid week for this one. It was the looongest I have ever waited for ovulation; normally I ovulate within a day of that first positive strip. This could totally account for the difference. Rest easy, girl.
  • @purplejoymommy and @bpietronicco congrats on the great appointments! So happy for good updates!
