Had my first ultrasound today! Baby measured 5 days behind EDD. But they only change DD if you are 6 days or more off. Lol. So I guess we will see how it goes as we go along. 142 bpm.
Got to see our little one today! Saw the heartbeat which was the biggest relief!!! The US lady said she couldn’t tell me my due date. She said I had to wait for the radiologist to send the report back to my doctor with it which I thought was strange, but I’m still thrilled 😄
@anna2019 they do that if you had it done at a facility other than your OB's office like at the hospital or an imaging facility. The techs are not allowed to technically discuss anything with you.
@mrskoz428 it’s actually standard practice here in Ontario to not have the dating scan unless you’re uncertain of your ovulation dates. with My first, I had the dating scan, but didn’t with my second, so doctors aren’t consistent with this it seems. I believe you could probably get an elective ultrasound if you really wanted to see earlier.
Also, if you’re carrying multiples, they’ll know well before your 20 week scan. There will be multiple heartbeats and you will grow faster than a singleton.

@mrskoz428 I’m up in Canada, and even here it seems that the standard varies a bit depending where you’re at. But I won’t have an ultrasound until the 18-20 week anatomy scan either, unless something comes up before that to warrant one. I’m a 3rd time mom (4th pregnancy, had a miscarriage prior to my first daughter). With my first and second pregnancies I did have a dating ultrasound, but my clinic did away with those by the following year for most low-risk pregnancies. We have previously opted out of genetic testing, so never saw our second until the 20ish week mark.
As far as multiples go, your OB or midwife is well trained and they will probably detect a second HB with the Doppler prior to your US if there is one. Which would jump you into a higher risk category automatically. If twins run in your family, mention it.
I know it’s not the easiest, but try to trust that baby is growing and developing as he/she should. Once you hear the heartbeat it will fee so much more real, and if there is a reason for concern I’m sure your dr will send you for an earlier scan.
@mcewen3 I messaged my CNM) which will probably be answered by a nurse) to verify when the first ultrasound was and if I could possibly have a dating scan. It’s at least worth asking. My sister gave birth at the same hospital I’m going through and she always had ultrasounds when she announced her pregnancies. If they say no, I suppose it’s no big deal, i just worry because I was told I’d hear the heart beat at my 13 week appointment which is a little early to hear via Doppler, so I’m not even sure I will.

I would be surprised if you can’t hear the HB at your 13 week appt. I don’t want to give incorrect information, it’s been 6 years since my first tri with DD1, but I’m sure I heard her HB around 11 weeks. (I didn’t see my Dr until 12ish weeks with DD2 but I also heard her HB at that appt) My midwife this time around said she likes to book first appts for 10-11 weeks so that it’s late enough to hear a HB but early enough to discuss genetic testing, so I think my memory is accurate.
@mcewen3 every where I look says Doppler can’t pick up a heartbeat until 15 weeks but I could also be wrong! :-) We will see what they say when they message back. Thanks for the information.
@DuchessOfCambridge weird! Maybe online resources say later just so people don’t expect anything? My next appointment is November 2 and I’ll be around 13.5 weeks by then.
@mrskoz428 I almost wonder if they’re talking about at home Dopplers? Even though they’re still medical equipment, the ones made for at home use generally aren’t as high quality as those in dr office settings.
@GeorgiaGirl1230 you are winning for clearest 8 week pic so far!! I'm 8 weeks 5 days today, so I hope having U/S pushed back a week at least comes with the benefit of a clear pic like yours!!!
Hello! 1st post & a little anxious over here! We had our 1st appointment today...thought we were 8 weeks, but u/s showed 6 w 3 days. The tech didn't seem concerned, but we didn't get to see the midwife afterwards to discuss this with her. My friends have had mc's after finding the baby to be smaller than expected...please ease my mind. Please. I asked if we should be concerned & she said no. My last period was Aug. 5th & I have irregular length cycles (anywhere from 30 to 38 days). Heartbeat was at 120 & music to our ears at least (:
@jprb0630 I would trust the doctors, but I know it's so hard to not worry. Did they schedule a follow up u/s? That seems like a good heartbeat for 6w3d, and ovulation may have been later if your cycles are longer.
@jprb0630 I was in your situation a couple of week ago and I understand your worry. I went in thinking I was 8 weeks and my dr couldnt even find the baby at first. She eventually found it after a lot of searching and it was so small. She measured it at 6w1d with a heartbeat. We had a loss last year so my mind immediately went to something being wrong. Dh also travels a lot and he wasn’t home much of Aug so I couldn’t see how I was only 6 weeks, maybe 7 but not 6. My dr changed my due date and scheduled a second u/s at 8 weeks. Those two weeks of waiting, I was a wreck. We went in last week and surprise baby is measuring 9 weeks! Try not to worry, I know harder said than done! You could have ovulated late and also implantated a day or two later than normal.

@jprb0630 with your long length and irregularity of menstraul cycles, it is very possible to be only 6w3d. Your due date is usually more accurate based on date of conception, not necessarily the 1st day of your LMP. Based on date of conception, I’m actually due 3-5 days sooner than my LMP due date. I wouldn’t be too concerned!
@jprb0630 - my first pregnancy was like that. I have very irregular cycles and they couldn’t find a heartbeat using the doppler at my first appointment when I should have been 10 weeks. Waited all day for an ultrasound and found baby measuring 8w3d. Daughter is perfectly healthy and will be 5 in December. A strong heartbeat is a great sign. Try to trust the tech, and call to get a follow up appointment scheduled if you haven’t already.
Thank you for sharing & lowering my worries a bit! They have not set another ultrasound until 12 weeks, which is in 6 weeks now...I don't think I can wait that long. I'm trying to figure out when I actually ovulated then, because I took an LH test on August 25th & had it come back positive.
I was 6w3d yesterday when this u/s was done. I have a small SCH going around the bottom 1/3 of the GS. I go back on thursday to see if it resolved, stayed the same, or got bigger. Though we have seen the heartbeat twice no one had given us a heart rate. Is this something you have to ask or were you just told?
Hey all, thank you for the well wishes for my appointment yesterday! I ended up being really nervous leading up to seeing the ultrasound, but now I can be excited. @jprb0630 I ended up measuring smaller than where I thought I was based off of LMP too. I'm a FTM, so no experience with this, but what eased my mind was the fact that I too have irregular cycles, but based on the day I thought we conceived, the new due date was right on track. They pushed me back to May 14th. Hope that helps too.
So now I'm 8wks again today, and baby's heartbeat was at 162! Great appointment overall, now on too planning how to announce!
Had my appt today- 7 wks + 6 and Baby and sac grew appropriately. Sac is still a week behind but RE is not really worried anymore as it grew. HB was 167 today. Next appt next week and I graduate from my RE.
@jprb0630 sometimes LH strips will show the hormone in your system for a while. What I have learned (from my first who is a fertility specialist) is that while the first LH strip that comes back positive is great and tells you to start trying, you should continue to do the deed until 2 days after the LH strips are no longer positive. I actually had positive LH strips for 3.5 days until the hormone started to decline (meaning ovulation would occur with 12-24 hours). DH and I were like rabbits for a solid week for this one. It was the looongest I have ever waited for ovulation; normally I ovulate within a day of that first positive strip. This could totally account for the difference. Rest easy, girl.
So got my first scan today! They gave me a new due date of May 22nd.

Hey ladies! First time poster here. 🙋♀️ We got to see our little peanut last week when I was 7wks 1day pregnant. This is my husbands and I's first baby. We tried for a year and half, resulting in two failed IUI's. Third times the charm! 😍
Our little nugget is looking good! A little over achiever measuring 2 days ahead of schedule and a heartbeat of 147! *we didnt get to hear it, but we could see it beating and it was the sweetest thing!
Hey guys! We got to see baby yesterday, measuring right on schedule at 10 weeks you guys, I can’t even describe it. We’ve had weekly scans since 6 weeks (we heard the heartbeat at 8 weeks, btw) and watching it change and grow each week has been so encouraging to my irrational PGAL brain. But this week takes the cake. Last week at 9 weeks it finally looked like a human and we got to see its little legs moving around a bit. But this week it is full on baby and was just dancing away. We could see all of the fingers and toes and for some reason those little knees just had me in puddles for hours afterward. What an amazing thing this is we get to experience! I am finally starting to believe that this might be happening.

@BWhitta this gives me chills! I’m so darn happy for you! Continue to keep us posted! I can’t wait for my US next week - I’ll be at 10w then too...cool to know all the things I might be able to see!
We had another ultrasound yesterday so far everything looks good and is measuring good still. HB was 162. We won’t have another ultrasound until 10/30 for the nuchal, so that will be torture, but we can’t wait to see how much our little bean has grown.
Re: Ultrasounds
Had my first US today and I’m measuring exactly on track at 8w5d! Heart rate was 174bpm.
