Thanks, ladies! You’re right about the spelling/pronunciation thing. People also misspell my last name regularly, and it’s James. Sadly, DH just vetoed Emilia. Back to the drawing board!
@cassafrass15 Boo, I like Emilia. Your DH is a picky one!
I think we finally found a boy name we both like! I just don't know if it's too Norwegian, I've never seen it used in the US before. What do you guys think of Audun?
DS born 2/18/2019 DD born 4/1/2023 Baby #3 EDD 11/21/2024
I’ve met an Auden @grebretso, which I think is the English version. I love it, but you already know we have similar taste in names. Biggest issue I think you will have is minor misprononuciation. DH gets this all the time (because Americans can’t pronounce Sten) and it’s not really that big of a deal. He corrects them and moves on.
@kayjay44 He'll (if it's a "he") have to deal with people butchering his completely bonkers last name no matter what, so why not go all the way? People will mispronounce and misspell all kinds of names, even the simplest ones. H's name is Eric, and people call him Derek or spell it Erik all the time.
Audun is definitely uncommon, but I think the pronunciation is relatively straightforward compared to other Norwegian names. I know an American Kjell, and even he mispronounces his own name because English doesn't have the Norwegian "kj" sound.

I’ve met two Kjells, but assumed they pronounced it differently because one was Norwegian and one was Swedish. The kj sound is definitely a tricky one.
DH and I are really having a tough time with boy names. We want it to be easy enough to pronounce for both English and Spanish speaking fam. We are thinking now of Oscar, Max or DH likes Bruce (but I’m not sold). Middle name we’re thinking Javier or Joaquin. Is Oscar going to get him teased about Oscar the Grouch?
If I could have been guaranteed that I was going to have 2 daughters when I named DD 4 years ago I wouldn’t have combined my mom’s and MIL’s names to make her MN. Her whole name would have been less of a mouthful and they each could have used one and they would have fit.
Having a boy. Me and DH cannot agree for shit. Everything I’ve come across just doesn’t feel right. I like the really Italian/Spanish sounding names like Matteo or Lorenzo but my husband does NOT want that. His last name is Esposito and he feels it’s just too much . So yeah no idea what we’re gonna name this kid because like nothing sounds right
Speaking of.. my 7 yo brought this home from school today. I did not take H’s last name when we got married, but my kids have it and it gets mispronounced all the time.
I generally like fairly traditional names that have a shortened nickname that I can use for day to day - hence Eli (Elijah) and Lucy (Lucille). We haven’t dug that deep into naming yet. I kind of like Maxwell, Arlo, Gabriel, and Felix for boys right now and Maxine, Rosemary, and Violet for girls. Who knows. I really wanted to name Lou “Sawyer” and H knocked that down hard. He’s okay with Max for a boy but not sold for a girl. I kind of like the idea of the same name either way since this one is our first team green baby. It would potentially be Maxwell Lee or Maxine Leigh. Lee/Leigh after my dad/brother/sister. I also love Elliott for a girl but Eli and Ellie are a little too sing songy.
@cmjenkies I LOVE Elliott for a girl. But it’s DS’s name already lol. I love super classic/old fashioned girls names or super gender neutral/almost boyish names for girls. Elliott, Max, Charley - all great girl names in my opinion.
so we decided that she would have to have a 4 letter name, as we all do including my son. My son is Levi Clarence after my hubs grandfather, and were almost positive this little girl will be Ruby Priscilla after my Grandmother. Hubs wasnt taken taken with Ruby at first, but it has settled on him and she just feels like a Ruby. the other names (Erin, Anne, Ally, Kate) just didn't feel as her. Yesterday I looked up songs about a Ruby and bawled my eyes out.

Ruby and Levi have both been on my list the last two kiddos
Not sure I wanted to get this personal yet but wth. My dad's mn is Cabot, but that is what he goes by. DH and I both love that name. We were originally going to have it as a mn but DH suggested it as a first name and I haven't found a first name I like better. But is that too confusing to be called the same thing as his his grandfather?
What are your thoughts? Do you have a name you like to go with Cabot as a first name or mn? (For a boy)
ETA: DH loves Cabot Kenneth and I really like the sound of that but I just can't with Kenneth for personal reasons.
@notthecheat I like Cabot Michael - that hard C sound repeating is cool I think. I don’t think it’d be confusing. I mean do people frequently call your Dad by his first name at family gatherings or is he typically called his grandfather name?
@notthecheat I’m named after my mom and grandmother. My mom goes by her middle name, and my grandma was always referred to by “mama Silvia” so it never was confusing. If you like the name you should go for it.
We found out pretty early last time DD was a girl so the boy name list was small. I was looking forward to using my #1 girl name with this one since we used DHs (which I also love) last time but, guess we're going to the bot drawing board. We haven't agreed on any boy names yet.
TW: 1 infant loss 8/17: Our daughter was born 8/18: Our daughter kicked open heart surgery ass 2/19: We lost our son to Prader-Willi/Paradoxical Vocal Cord/ Noonans at 6wks old 4/26/2020: EDD for baby #3!!!
My husband loves Mavis but I’m not sold. I named my daughter Edith (my Eddie) after my grandmother so he gets first choice. He also loves Theo for a boy but it’s super popular here
Okay. I think we finally have a boy name for real. Vegard or Vegar (the d is silent, so we might drop it). So for a girl it's Solvei or Tuva, and for a boy it's Vegar(d). Please, H, don't change your mind again!
DS born 2/18/2019 DD born 4/1/2023 Baby #3 EDD 11/21/2024
@lifeislove87 I like Mavis! I'm a big one for not trendy names tho. DH picked out DD's name and I wasn't completely sold on it but the more I tried to pick out a different name the more I found out that each name I picked out and thought was unique was actually becoming trendy. -_- So I "gave up" and agreed with DH and I'm glad I did (so is he ) I'd keep an open mind but don't agree on something if you truly don't like it
ETA I also like Theo but would never use it because trendy
@notthecheat I’m definitely trying to continue saying it until it grows on me !! It’s also nice that he’s so invested in this process and the name that I want to make it work for him (my dad named my sister and she loved telling everyone the story growing up)
People. Narrow my girl list down. Last name is a traditional Irish name beginning with M, ending with Y.
We are solid on a boys name which means I’m obviously growing a girl DH likes Eve (1) and Claire (2). I really feel like it’s a coin flip for all of them for me.
