@spartan4life we are doing both! DH just installed blinds today, and hopefully curtains tomorrow! The curtains are supposedly blackout curtains from PB kids. Our blinds do a shit job of blocking light in our bedroom, so I'm sure they won't be much better in the nursery.
Eta: curtains are also definitely for decoration too. Mint/white for color
Thanks guys! @knottieamusements I like the idea of the blackout blinds with a valance. I’m also afraid of him pulling them down. When I told DH that of course he then asked if I plan to take all of our curtains down. Umm no but I feel his room is different. I’ll have to see what I can find today.
The blinds/curtains issue is something I have given much thought to.
I've decided to get blinds, corded or not (you can buy little pieces that screw into the wall to tie them up on) that I will draw down during the day for nap times.
In addition, I am buying blackout curtains for sleeping at night, but will tie them back during the day.
ETA: I fully expect my little one to fuck with everything. I'm not going to stress over curtains.
We’ve been looking at blinds for ages but we rent so we’re looking super cheap since whatever we install is staying. Both Target and Walmart have inexpensive cordless blackout blinds. I’m currently obsessing over new curtains for SD/DD’s room. I can’t commit to anything and I’m driving myself crazy.
We didn’t bother with cordless. I’m just planning to tie to cord up. But blackout curtains are everythinggg. We have them in all of our bedrooms from Target,
I've heard a lot of stories about the use of blackout curtains making kids ONLY able to sleep in complete darkness. Not sure how true it is, but that's what I've heard. We have wooden blinds and normal curtains in DDs room. They still let a good amount of light in but it's never bothered her. The sun is up here around 6:15am and she still sleeps until 8-8:30. No clue if using regular curtains have anything to do with it or if she is just a great sleeper, bit we plan on doing the same for this LO.
@sawyerrichardson I’ve heard the same thing! My quest for blackout is actually bc in the summer I put the whole house in to lock down mode and try to keep out as much sunlight during the day as possible too keep it cool. I’m totally that Progressive commercial where the chick turns into her dad and I walk around yelling at everyone “do you think we own stock in the electric company!?”
We had regular blinds and black ot curtains for DS. But since we replaced our windows we got new black out blinds. With blackout blinds only light is still coming through the sides. I suggest regular blinds and blck out curtains.
So, my experience as an adult- you can absolutely learn to regularly sleep in a room that has a lot of light. When I was living in AK, it took us a few years, for various reasons to install real window dressings in our bedroom. In the meantime, we literally had muslin fabric over a spring rod for privacy. In the summer where we lived, twilight never turns to darkness even if the sun does go down for a couple hours.
That said- I also had coworkers who refused to ever sleep in a room without blackout curtains.
I know I can get them, I am not planning to do so, unless I discover Blast honestly can’t sleep with any level of light.
We don’t use blackout anything, and our kids stay in bed until 8:00. I also never bothered with trying to make it dark during naps. There aren’t any curtains in our house, I always worry the cats will climb them.
I have heard both sides of the the black out debate. I am planning normal shades/blinds and picking up black our shades to put in quickly of kid refuses to sleep with light. Our room has black out shades that are too small so our room is normally pretty dark but has some light coming in around the sides. Baby will in our room with be in the room with us for at least alittle bit and hopefully that doesn't mess them up for sleeping with more light.
We have wooden blinds that are really nice and very close to blackout. We put decorative curtains with them that my mom made (white with grey and thin so let’s light in).
For the first year I didn’t bother closing the blinds all the way and tried to have her nap with the blinds open but angled to the ceiling and her curtains closed over them. I was afraid of her needed total darkness to nap since that’s not always realistic when traveling.
Now at 18 months I close everything up, but it’s still not completely dark because of her nightlight. She sleeps fine.
@mommy_myers Love your nursery! I am a big knitter/crafter, so I definitely appreciate all the handmade projects.
Our nursery is still under construction right now. The electrical is being upgraded in our house, and we replaced the tiled ceiling with drywall, and some other cosmetic repairs. Hoping to paint this coming week. We have an antique dresser we are using for the baby, and my in-laws bought the crib, so once the room is painted, I will start getting everything ready.
2 weekends ago, DH and I put up the wall decals we got for baby girl's zoo-themed nursery (pics in spoiler). I love it so much! It was also really easy to peel and stick them and you can pull them off and re-position if you don't like how they look. Even though each branch and leaf on the tree came as a separate decal, it was so easy that the whole thing was done in less than an hour. We had a lot of fun putting it up.
I am going to put floating wall bookshelves on the other side of the crib on that empty wall. I am figuring out what to put above the changing table still. And I'm going to leave the spot above my glider for a framed print of her hand and footprints after she's born.
Also, the teddy bear lamp is extra special because it was in my husband's nursery as a baby (given to him by his grandparents) and as he got older, he would take the baby bear out (the mama bear's arms have velcro so you can remove baby bear) and he would pet it and cuddle it. I am so happy there was one thing saved by our parents that we can pass down and use in the baby's room.

@sarahzett the whole room looks awesome! The lamp story is so cute and I'm glad you get to pass that down to your little girl. You could frame a nice picture of all of you after she's born for above the changing table?? In a white frame to match the decor would be a cute idea
Thanks guys! It feels much more real with a crib and the furniture placed. Now to just wait for the shower to get everything else, and then we get to put up art and all that!
@nasalot188 I will be honest....I have no idea what color, lol. When we moved into the house 2 years ago we picked out colors and had painters come paint everything, but 2 years later I have no idea who or what. We have it down in our basement so I could always figure it out later though
Catching up as I have only been able to pop in for a few minutes before today... Ahh I love these nurseries!! Hoping ours comes together ok. Dh will be doing almost everything while I am out of state in August. It kills me to wait that long as I want to see the crib up, pick up my rocker recliner etc!!! It will be a fun surprise to see it almost all done but I kinda want to help!

Thats a great idea! I found our newborn photographer so I’ll save some room above the table for a family photo! Thanks!
