Things People Say to Pregnant Women

Re: Things People Say to Pregnant Women

  • Someone exclaimed "you're still here?!" on Monday and I was quick to inform him that I should still be here since I am not due until mid July and we don't want a premature baby.
Hey I’d gladly take more time off if they want to donate their PTO...definitely not to have a premie.

my mom, whom i haven’t spoken to since she tried throwing a guilt trip over our name selection, messages me asking if baby is all ready to come out yet? Um no please stay put for the last 4 weeks! I don’t want to screw up my maternity leave plans and I’m barely going to be 35 weeks!

  • @babybakie omg you are so polite. I would have responded "and I am going to call you a-hole from now on". LOL. Too much? I am a potty mouth. Again, people who feel like they have permission to judge appearances because of pregnancy...to use a millennial expression, I can't even.

    @flockofmoosen3 perfect response!

My mother at 32 weeks - "I don't think you're going to make it to your due date"....uhmmmm, what? What kind of crystal ball have you been reading?
  • omg I'm not looking forward to the "you're still here!?" "no baby yet!?"s.... the "any time now"s from medical care professionals are annoying too - at the u/s yesterday the tech kept saying "should be soon now!" after 4 weeks of that crap with DD i've learned to just ignore it

  • @runsomewhere DH's family does.  They haven't tried it this pregnancy, but they would say "you don't even look pregnant, are you sure you're not having twins!?" in the same breath.  For them it's more family history of twins and hopeful thinking

  • @runsomewhere I get the twins comment all.the.time. like @gingerbride26 it's mostly family history stuff that I think triggers it. In my case, my dad is a twin, and I guess everyone thinks that automatically means I'd have twins. To me that's about the same logic as assuming I'd have a girl because I'm a girl. Because, yeah, that's how science works people.
  • We went out to dinner last night and everyone  i passed by had this huge smile as they looked at me. Super awkward. Like they’ve never seen a pregnant woman with a toddler. Then as we were seated this little girl who just had her baby sibling saw me and repeatedly started whispering “oh she’s gonna have a baby”. I was everyone’s dinner entertainment i guess.
  • @wildtot I feel like a circus animal wherever I go with DS alone. All eyes on me like they’ve never seen a pregnant lady and a toddler.
Then I second guess myself and wonder if they’re giving me that look because I look like 18 without makeup on.
  • MIL told me how much I’ve dropped again last night and how I’m NEVER going to make it to July.. gahhhhh
  • So thankful for my amazing OB. At yesterday's appointment he asked, "How are you feeling?" I said "very pregnant and in the home stretch." His response, "well you look great, seriously your beautiful."
So nice to get that after so many others say the worst comments ever

So this one's not so much what people SAY, but a lot can be said without words, right? Any other STM+ moms get horrible looks if a little one starts breaking down in public? I always get looked at like "you can't even control that one and you're having ANOTHER?" It's especially bad when my son gets cranky and I'm nannying another kid at the same time. Took the kiddos to an outdoor kids concert and DS started getting tired, hot, and cranky. Cue whining. We got dirty staring, not looks, I mean MINUTES AT A TIME STARING until I just packed up and left. Mind you, other kids were crying too, their moms just weren't pregnant. Like, WHAT?

  • @d_marie_23 yep i get those looks too especially with DS going nuts.
  • @d_marie_23 yes, 1000x! My son was yelling NO NO NO throughout the grocery store today, for no reason, literally nothing I did would make him stop and what was I going to do, leave? I'm sure I got more than a few "Ready to do it again?" looks, lol.
  • One of our sales reps wouldn’t lay off the belly jokes and comments. Just because he has children he thought he could be his obnoxious self, by making me feel like a cow. No way i he’ll i would ever buy anything from this guy. Almost talking down to me (second encounter but similar experience). I feel bad for his wife, hope she had a nice version of him with her pregnancies.
  • @MrsMiller8588 how strange!! Lol I hope this is not a thing!
  • Me and another pregnant woman were waiting to have our blood drawn yesterday at the lab, an older woman came out of her appointment and walked up to the receptionist to proclaim very loudly "what, is it pregnant lady day today or something!?".  Oh I'M sorry, have we offended you in some way!?!

  • I also keep getting the "you're so small/ you don't look like it" when I tell people I only have a few weeks left. Like, baby is in the 50%+ range... so idk? I'm blaming it on the fact that I started out fat and just haven't gained too much weight?
  • A woman in the waiting room at the MFM office (another patient) saw me after I checked in and she yelled from across the room, "How many babies are you having???"  I said, "Just one".  And she responded with, "OMG really?  But you're so BIG!"  Then she continued with, "This is my 7th baby and I'm dying at only 16 weeks.  You're like, ready to pop! How far along are you?"  I told her that this was my 5th baby and I'm almost 35 weeks and she seemed relieved by that.  She said, "Well at least you're close to the end!" as I was walking back after they called my name.

You would think a woman who has been pregnant 7 times would know better than to say crap like that.  But I guess not.

  • I had a 37 week checkup yesterday: Dr said everything is measuring right on track.

I went to a massage right after: lady checking me in said "omg you're so tiny for 37weeks! I remember being huge!"

The actual masseuse said "oh wow you look like you're ready to pop! you're huge!"

So funny that in the scope of around 1 hour, I got 3 different reactions.

@rachelsogo Haha that's really funny. I feel like people's reactions to my belly tend to be based on what I'm wearing and weather or not I pooped that day.
    WORD!
  • Today i heard a good one. A guy at work told me he sees a big change in me this week. I said yes, i feel a big change this week (I'm suddenly swelling now). He added, yeah, you can tell you're having a girl, because they say girls steal the mother's beauty.  :|
  • @babybakie odd way to either compliment/flirt or he just straight up said you got ugly. Gosh guys are so dumb sometimes! Girl your beautiful!
  • @babybakie  I would have thrown the nearest object at him. Wtf
