@kissableviv Oliver is super popular in my area but I still love it (it's also my DS' middle name so I'm kind of biased ) Most of my favorite names are in the top 100 which I was trying to steer clear of but whatever *shrug*
@kissableviv we loved Oliver too but then a guy that DH used to be friends with named his son that and then a couple months later another one of DH's old friends named his son that too and DH couldn't get over it lol
@carsonraynee so funny! I think it's not hipster enough for where I live lol all the names I hear around here are completely different than the ones we like I mean who cares if we like the name at the end of the day... My friends who had boys used Lucas and Levi, which we were not considering, and I think our other friend is set on something more traditional but we aren't sure what it's going to be. She is due two weeks after me.
@kissableviv just about everyone I know who has had a boy has named him grey/gray-something Grayson, Greyson, Greydon. I don't know if those count as hipster names but I just think it's funny that it's kind of an unusual name and it's popping up so often. I tend to lean more traditional/classic but still kind of unique
So we decided a few months ago to go with Owen. We’re not totally sure on a middle name but leaning towards William. Anyway, we agreed not to tell anyone because last time we loved Felix and people mocked us for it...specifically my pain in the ass mother in law, but others also made fun of it. And in the end we didn’t use it. So I’m wondering if anyone else chose a name and decided to keep it a secret, and if so, what’s your strategy when people ask “so, have you thought about names yet?” We’ve been getting that question a lot lately. I usually say oh we haven’t thought about it much. My H told his mom “we picked a name but we’re not telling you.” I can’t be that blunt. however, I know it’s killing her and that’s just fine with me
@kissableviv I love Oliver! I love O names in general though I know they’re popular now. It’s still a classic name, not a trendy name, so I wouldn’t be too worried about the popularity.
@zande2016 we are pretty set on our name but I don’t want to tell. When people have asked recently I’ve said we have a name we really like but we’re not 100% sure yet so I don’t want to say.
It took us what felt like a million years to decide on a name for DD and I was sick of hearing people’s opinions so when we finally decided I just said that we’re keeping it a surprise. I might have added something about knowing everything else about her so the name is what we’re surprising everyone with.
@hillbillywife we had such a hard time choosing a name for our first, and I feel like part of it was how obnoxious people were about names we liked. I figure once it's on the kid's hospital bracelet, they can't make comments. I should probably do what you did and tell people its a surprise so they stop asking. My mom will be like "so, what should we name this baby?" and start throwing out names, and I'm like...."we...?"
lol @zande2016 that's hilarious she says "we." FWIW I love the name Felix, because it makes me think of Felix Felicis from Harry Potter (the luck potion!). But DH says its a cat name and rolls his eyes. You should tell people its a surprise.
@smashjam we loved the meaning, in Latin it means lucky/successful, hence the HP potion name! Yeah, my mom will come rub my belly and go "How's our baby?" UGH so annoying, but I just roll my eyes. If it was anyone else I'd slap them.
@zande2016 yess! And my husbands family has lived in the area that we do for foreverrrr so they know TONS of people and as soon as you say a name it’s like “well so and so you’ve never heard of before has this name and he’s a real piece of work” or whatever.
Itd definitely be way more rude to make a comment after baby is already here. (I like the name Felix too!)
@zande2016 That's exactly what we did for our DS and what we are doing for our DD. And when people ask why we are keeping it a surprise, I honestly say it's because we don't want opinions from others to sway us.
By the way, I LOVE the name Owen and I LOVE the name Felix - both are top 10 for me. We clearly have similar taste.
@zande2016 I love Owen! Good pick! I thought about that myself until I realized how ridiculous it would be with our last name (hint my husband and the Captain America actor have the exact same name lol)
@zande2016 We didn't tell DS1's name ahead of time and we won't be telling this time either. When people ask I'm just honest and say "we haven't decided yet but we're not announcing until he's born." So it's kind of blunt but I try to keep the statement impersonal. And I know it drives my mother crazy but... it's her fault! I have a name that is super popular now but was not in 1985 and she told me stories of being pregnant with me and people being straight up rude about my name. Like literally telling her "ooh, I don't like that." So, thanks but no thanks. Her stories scarred me.
@zande2016 - I have an Owen! His middle name is Patrick (similar to William in that it's pretty traditional) if you're looking for other options.
We still are nowhere near choosing a name for this boy! Joel, James, Alexander and William are names we are considering ... But I'm honestly not super in love with any of them. Given the choice myself he'd be named Wesley. I adore that name and tried to convince my husband to go for it with Oth of our first two boys... No dice and its not looking good this time either.
@KatyF0813 we can't use Patrick because my MIL is the female version of that name and...well...I'm not the fondest of my MIL. William is a hugeeee family name for my husband's family, the first name would be William if he had his way, but I wanted him to have his own identity. H was also pushing Liam hard because it's a version of William, but it's so incredibly common around me that I decided against it. So I'm compromising and letting H have William for the middle name, though I really like Owen Henry as well. We shall see! I really like Alexander, we have a nephew named Xander otherwise we may have gone with that.
@zande2016 we have pretty much decided on Sloane but I'm keeping my options open. Our "back-up" name is Ella which I like but I like Sloane more. We tell people we have two options but will wait until birth to decide when we see her and we don't share the name. I say we don't want people's opinions to influence our choice. We have never shared the baby name before birth so our family knows that. But for some reason that doesn't stop them from asking.

@zande2016 we are so sick of people asking if we have a name. In all honesty, we have not decided, so we are not lying when we say we don't know. We will keep it a surprise because we announced the pregnancy and the sex pretty early (13 weeks) so we like SOME element of surprise.
I'm pretty set on Oliver Luca or Oliver Milo but now DH said he started to love Milo more and "if we have a daughter they can be Milo and Maia". Well, I still need to pop this one out first! I adore Milo but I know my whole family in Italy will think it's a bit weird and for some reason I cannot get over it.
I love Owen, and I think Sloane is great @Sarafuss!
@kissableviv I love, love, love Milo! But all of your choices are great! I felt that way about my first baby. We decided to name him Roman and I was so afraid my family was going to think it was weird but they all loved it.

@zande2016 we’re keeping our name secret. We haven’t decided 100% but we’re pretty sure we have the one. When strangers ask I just say we don’t have one yet. With friends/family we’ve said from the beginning we aren’t telling anyone so we just reiterate that No one seems to be too offended about it.
@zande2016 we kept our twins names secret until they were born and same with this baby. I tell people we’ve decided but we’re keeping it a surprise until she’s here
@zande2016 I agree with all of the above advice, I’ve just said we have a list and are going to decide once the baby is born! My family seems to be okay with that, only a few people are pushing, but we are go holding strong. Lol
So... I've talked names here before and we were leaning towards Laurel for baby girl. Now this Yanni or Laurel internet thing is driving me nuts. It's super annoying and ruining my name for me. This better be long forgotten by the time baby girl arrives so everyone can stfu lol.
When people ask me if we have a name picked out I say, no, and then ask them for suggestions! It's a good way to put them on the spot...and I new ideas to consider if they are able to come with something.
@runsomewhere I thought about you when I saw that whole debate and I was like "Oh man, I bet she's not happy about this!" lol. I would feel the same way. A year from now, though, people will probably have forgotten about it and it's kind of a cool story to tell her some day.
The Madeleine/Madelyn debate is still ongoing on in our house. Actually it's not much of a debate. My husband says "I like the Madeleine spelling better, but I know its more important to you so whatever you want is fine". UGH. I think they are both pretty I just worry about people misspelling and mispronouncing Madeleine. I don't really like the "Made-a-Line" pronunciation, which is I think what draws me more to Madelyn. It is clearly pronounced with the "lynne" sound at the end. Naming babies is tough work guys.

This audio recording thing is the dumbest. Like, hello, if you slow something down it sounds different. I am vafflebat how this sh** becomes viral. @runsomewhere I wouldn't care at all, Laurel is beautiful!
@stlmegs I prefer Madeline, but that's also because one of our good friends is Madeline spelled that way
@runsomewhere I love the name Laurel! I bet this stupid video will go away in the next few weeks. But, that would be driving me nuts, too!
@stlmegs I am such a nerd right now, but I'm teaching long vowel sounds and the 'magic e' spelling pattern to my kindergarteners. With the 'e' on the end of Madeleine, I would totally read it with the "line"-sounding ending. That being said, I've had a Madeline that was pronounced 'lyn' in my class. The child was quick to tell me on day one that it's "lyn" not "line" and I never mispronounced it again!

This is exactly what I would think too! Technically, since it is the French spelling the pronunciation is Mad-e-lehn. But I agree, that's my concern with that spelling. I can just picture it being mispronounced at her graduation, other events, etc. We will probably end up going with Madelyn.

I hate when people ask us about names too. Basically we say we have a few floating around but we haven't settled on anything yet. Right now we are between two different name combos. 1. Ryan Samuel and 2. Zachary Aiden. I feel like we'll just figure it out when we see him.
We are suuper indecisive on boy names if anyone cares to share their opinion of the below, middle name being Lee: -Aaden (my worry is that this is too popular) -Remington (Rem or Remi for short, my worry is that with everything happening in the world people will think we're gun fanatics) -Eamon (curious how you'd pronounce it!) -Isaac (good nicknames that aren't Zac?)
@ckmb_knottie I like Aaden (I assume it's Aidan you're just spelling it differently) and Isaac. I'm not sure about any good nick names for Isaac though.
I do like Remington but I definitely associate it with guns and it feels a little redneck. I like Eamon a lot too but right away it reminds me of that musician that did that 'I don't want you back' song years ago, he's not in the spotlight anymore so it's nbd to me but that was my first thought.
@ckmb_knottie I do think that's how he pronounced it. I think I remember the name because I had a roomate play his album a ton and it was kind of hateful towards women. Buuuuut again, that's one guy and I do like the name.
I think we have it down to Madelyn and Isabelle we had Arianna but found out our new neighbors have a 18 month old by that name so I don't want to use it now.
@ckmb_knottie of your choices I would choose Aaden or Isaac. Aside from the gun association I know several girls named Remi so if you plan on calling him that, that might be a concern. I don’t think the name Aaden/Aiden is as popular as it used to be but there will likely be many variations on it in his classes growing up (Caden, Brayden, Jayden, etc.). And I know how to pronounce Eamon (because of the artist @runsomewhere mentioned) but I would think pronunciation would be an issue for a lot of people. And I wouldn’t shorten Isaac but that’s just personal preference.
