Re: Names

  • @katem987 I have a Charlotte and a Madeline. If we have another girl Catherine will end up being in her name because it’s my grandmothers name.

We are up in the air on finding out what we're having, but our boy name is Frank William and our girl name is Ruby Grace. We have a back up boy (as twins run in my family), but no back up girl! We keep tossing out Dean or Sam (which I think Frank and either of those sound too Rat Pack-ish, but I like Dean, and Sam was his best friend that passed away... also, Supernatural ladies, c'mon). I cant wait to read through these to get some ideas :)

My choices would be Helen/Helene or Rosemary/Rose, both from my dad's side.

I LOVE the name Rosealia (Rose), but my DH does not at all!
  • I love reading everyone's names! Our son is Wyatt. For this baby, it'll be Myles or Sydney.
  • @whaat I LOVE it. I mentioned above we are thinking just a nn too (Molly).

but I might have to steal Holly if for some reason this kid is born on Christmas (unlikely).  It's the only thing my husband will hate more than Betty and I'M LIVING FOR IT.
  • whaatwhaat member
...he got to name my son something horrible (after his dad) so he has no say for #2.
  • @whaat love betty! We are thinking Elizabeth and either betty or birdie. So many good options!
  • @whaat Betty isn't my style, but no flames here for using a "nickname" as her actual name. Why give the kid a name they're never going to be called?? If everyone is going to call her Betty anyways or you don't like Elizabeth, then there's not point using Elizabeth. My son is Anthony and everyone kept asking, "what are you going to call him?" Ummm, Anthony?? If I wanted to call him Tony I would have named him Tony.

  • @whaat I don't like it. There. I said it. But I think you should do you. I totally own the fact that not many people like my naming style, but whatever. My kids, my choice. I'll do me, you do you.

But but but  you'll totally use the long name and not just the nickname!  My daughter goes by Maggie 100%, but "Margaret Middlename Lastname!" sounds so much more foreboding when I want her to stop jumping off the furniture.
  • Nora or Isla for a girl

If it’s a girl I’m doing Betty. Not Elizabeth with Betty as a nn, just Betty. Tell me how much you hate itso I can just dig my heels in.
    I freaking love Betty.

I, too, am obsessed with names. Here are some of my favorites.

For a girl: Adelaide, Ione, Juniper, Hestia, Corinne, Dahlia, and Zinnia. I like nature and Greek myth-inspired names, apparently.

For a boy: Jasper, Clark, Theo, Ian, Uriel, Zeke, and Otto.

Unfortunately, all these are either too "out there" for DH's taste or they're the names of crummy people from the past. The search continues!
Lone at in “Loe-nah?” We have a sweet lady from Denmark named Lone and I love love love it!

Any opinions on Junior, or in my case, Third? My husband is a Jr and I've always felt like we needed to continue his name if we have a boy. My husband doesn't feel the same way.

Also, he's the only son, and so is his dad...so if we don't have a boy, his line of he family name is done. Talk about pressure!!
A lot of people use Trey as a nickname for the third

  • S/O is being so stubborn on LO's name, but I'm really liking the combos Sydney Paige or Madeline Paige for a girl. My only issue with Olivia (I adore it) is how over the top common it is. But, I do love the nicknames w/ it. Little Oli, or Liv.    Heheh I'm already thinking this baby is a girl and I was dead wrong last time.

  • @morgantu I love Birdie as a nickname for Elizabeth! <3 My grandpa calls my gramma Bertie (different first name) but I always thought he was saying Birdie as a kid so I just have so much love for that name.

  • @hallgire Since Olivia is popular, have you considered Olive? I have a friend with a little Olive and they call her Ollie or Liv. Her name is so cute and it suits her so well.
  • @hallgire We are having the same debate over Olivia. It was pur girl name last time, but we had a boy. We both still love it, but don’t want her to be one of 5 in her class.

What are thoughts on Hudson? It was our #2 name with our first pregnancy (DS is Lincoln). I’m starting to worry that is becoming too popular now. I’ve seen 2 (maybe 3?) FB friends name their kids that, although they don’t live near us.

Also, Hayden for a boys name. Thoughts?

eta: Hayden is a family name. It’s my grandpa’s MN. I am super close with him, he was like my Dad growing up. DH and I just were never really fans of using a family name.

The thing about Betty vs Elizabeth is that there is a high risk of “Liz” with Elizabeth. I already have a best friend who goes by Liz (it also doesn’t go with the kid’s last name as much as Betty would). You can’t always force a nickname, but you can pick the name.
  • whaatwhaat member
But idk if it’s a joke or not but I really might be convinced to go with a Christmas name if I manage to stay in Dec. I’m loving them more and more every time they’re mentioned.
  • @whaat yeah we pushed our son’s nn real hard, but I recognize he could change his mind at any point. I have the same hang up with Elizabeth/Liz/Lizzy, so if I go Elizabeth, I’m going with Elisabeth spelling instead to try to discourage that, lol.

  • Does anyone have names picked out for certain traits? No? I’m the only weirdo?

There’s about a 0% chance we’d have a blonde kid, but if we do, I’m going to push hard for Blanche, Neve, or Boyd.

Middle name is going to be my last name (I didn’t take my husband’s but the kids have/will have  his last name). My son has the same middle name.
  • FWIW I loooooove Betty, and would consider using it as a nn too if I didn’t already have a friend with a little girl called that.

This may be a UO but I'll put it out there:  I'm very much not a fan of the -en, -on, -yn ending names.  Maybe it's that where I live (Midwest, lot's of suburbs), but E V E R Y O N E names their kids those names.  But honestly, you do you, girl.  Not everyone is going to like the name you give your kid, but it's YOUR KID.  If you like the name then just go for it and tell everyone else to screw off.  The only time I get super annoyed about names is when people name their kids something ridiculous and cutesy (think, like, Jaxton, Tinslee, or anything in the photo below).  I think people tend to forget that your child will not be a baby/toddler forever, and they need a name that can allow them to function in the adult world.  I cannot imagine turning in job applications if my name was Lakynn.

    /rant

But really, Hudson or Hayden are pretty mild.  I do see both of them a lot though, it that's what you're worried about.

Re: names that you see a lot, I think there's a difference between names you see a lot because they're popular, and names you see a lot because they're classic. Things like Joseph, Elizabeth, James, Michael, Emma, Olivia... those names are common because they're timeless, and they don't immediately give away your kid's age. If your Your Kaylees and Bellas and Brooklyns and Aydens and Braydens and Saylors or whatever names are on trend... those kids are going to grow up to be adults in the workforce who are going to reach out to clients who are going to take one look at their email signature and immediately know that they're dealing with a young'un. I mean, Ashley is a totally legitimate name, but people can immediately peg my age to within about 5-7 years, and it has absolutely affected the way that people relate to me professionally and the impressions that they've formed before they've even met me (in a way that they wouldn't if my name were, say, Elizabeth). I am all about the classics, but holy balls does it suck having a name that's on-trend.
A-freaking-men. My parents were way pre-trend on the very trendy name they gave me, and most people assume I'm 5-8 years younger than I am as a result. They also tend to assume I'm blonde -_- It's definitely influenced the way people interact with me in the professional setting.

@barnwellcrew my husband’s grandmother named all of her children with christmas-y names—Noel (prounounced Nole for her son), Holly, and Carol
  • @runrinserepeat I haven’t picked out names for traits exactly, but I have thought of names I like and how some might work better or worse depending on the baby’s hair color. I imagine I’ll have brunette kids because my hair is dark brown. But my sister also has brown hair and both of her girls are blonde. My SO is a ginger, so there are a few names that I think would be silly on a baby with red hair. Idk why. That’s part of why I’m team green for now. I don’t want to find out the sex and settle on a name and then see the baby and be like, “well, I didn’t know you’d be blonde/a redhead/brunette” I don’t know if that would happen though.  :D

@runrinserepeat My husband is Filipino and I'm Caucasian, so yes, all my names are based on what I think my kid is going to look like, which will probably be dark hair and dark eyes with an Asian flare, lol. Some names just don't seem to fit that look, to me! Ha!

  • @pregalicious2018  DH’s family tradition is to name their dogs after characters from Greek mythology (our dog is Calliope - or sometimes Calliopuppy :p). We thought when we named her we’d call her Callie, but she doesn’t answer to it.  They grew up with a Hector and a Penelope, and Calliope has canine cousins Atalanta, Mercury, and Pandia.

@texas_t My old dental hygienist was Filipina and her husband white - and their daughter has red hair!  Actually, so did a woman whose mom was filipina I knew through Junior League.  So you never know.  I’m ethnically Chinese and DH is blonder than blond, so we’ve conceded that my genes are going to win w/r/t coloring.  I’ve also only gone by my nickname (tried going by my full name when I went away to summer school for six weeks after my junior year in high school - It didn’t take) - it was even on my first business cards out of college.

We haven’t really talked names yet ourselves - though I’ve had a girl one in mind for a while (first pregnancy was almost two years ago *sigh*).  It did come up because I know the gender (from IVF with PGS) and DH doesn’t want to know till a more “usual” time (even though we did the NIPT for the first one, he didn’t want to know) - I asked him how long he wanted to wait and pointed out that we’d needlessly have to come up with twice as many names if he tried to wait till December (not happening).  His first thought was female family names on his side, but he doesn’t really like any of them.

DH’s father is Welsh, and I am a dork and like Harry Potter-style name alliteration (our last name starts with “T”), so for a girl I like Teagan.  Maybe Teagan Rose (my aunt is Rosa), but the little girl next door who was born at the beginning of the year has Rose as her middle name (though I know she’s hardly the only one).  DH and his siblings also have two middle names, so my maiden name will be the second one if it’s up to me :p

For a boy (which this baby is not - of our five remaining normal embryos, only one is a boy), I have sort of an obvious and literal name in mind:  Bowen (son of Owen - which of course my DH is because his father is a good Welshman ;) May be a little too close though - I suspect DH would object to naming a kid after him.
