@maureenmce I like Fox. But I also like really untraditional names that aren’t too crazy. I know a little boy named Bear and love it.
My son’s name is Major, so it’s pretty non traditional. On my last BMB when I said we were considering the name one woman said she hated it and thought it was disrespectful.
So I guess be prepared for people to definitely voice their ridiculous opinions outside of “it’s just not my style” (which I think is a totally fine things to say. Traditional names aren’t my style.)
My current list is also non-traditional. Locke for a boy and Mercy for a girl. But I still have to convince H of both of those.

@maureenmce I also like Fox! I won’t take it because it doesn’t flow with our last name Be prepared for everyone to say to him as he’s learning to speak “what does the Fox say?” He’ll reply in baby language, everybody will think it’s adorable, so they’ll do it until he’s a teenager. Conversely, he’ll receive all of the fox/woodland creature themed baby things. That could be handy.
At least, that’s where my thought experiment went

@krob I adore Mercy! I hope you can convince your husband! Do you like Jason Isbell at all? I love his music and he has a little girl named Mercy, which first put that name on my radar. It's really great and underused!
@echo-charlietango I'm sure you are one million percent correct about all of that! My daughter is Rose and we got a lot of rose/floral themed presents (and my mother planted rose bushes in her honor, which I love) so I'm sure if we go with Fox we'll be up to our ears in little stuffed foxes and woodland themed things. (Which I think would be cute, luckily!)
@maureenmce It is not personally my style, but I like the significance behind it. I think it is best that you are pairing it with a more traditional middle name that he can use if he so chooses.
@maureenmce I worked at a daycare when I was younger and there was a little boy named Fox. It totally suited him and no one thought twice about it. There was a girl named I.O. there too and some comments were made about her name.
My husband and I have officially agreed on a girl's name. If this baby is a girl (I will find out in 33 days but who's counting), her name will be Ryan Olive
Boy name is still being discussed.

Bumping this to see if anyone has any new thoughts on baby names! Also, I am still weighing the William Fox vs Fox William conundrum and those are probably our top two, but I also made a longer list of maybes since we have a long time until December and I don't want to be tied only to the name we picked out on our honeymoon years ago. Do you guys have any favorites or least favorites on my list? I think we want to narrow it to 3-4 to bring with us to the hospital. Would love any opinions from anyone else who loves thinking about names as much as I do, haha.
For family name context, our daughter's name is Rose and our last name is kind of like McKeely, William was my father's name (he and I were very close and he passed away when I was young), and Fox is a family surname we love.
William Fox Fox William Charles (Charlie) Fox Kit William August William Rhett Fox Jasper Fox Sawyer Fox Franklin William Ford William
@maureenmce I like William Fox, personally. Charles Fox is probably a close second for me (and you could certainly get away with Kit as a nickname for that one, although I'd probaby go with Christopher over Charles or Kit).
Kit is fun way to add in Fox, since baby foxes are sometimes called kits (which I’m guessing you were going for?). It’s also a more “normal” name, I think, but the only Kit I can think of is the actor who plays Jon Snow in GoT.
One of my great grandpas is a Franklin William- also a good name! My favorite of your list is Fox William. They all sound like good potential sibling names for Rose.
We started throwing around more boys names since this baby is most likely a boy, we still have no idea lol. Our friend suggested the name Vincent and I think that's the first one we've both really liked. So we may have a first name!! At least a very good potential first name lol. We're throwing around Michael as a middle name, it's my dads name and we both like it, just not as a first name for personal reasons.
I’m feeling pretty set on Arthur Frank if it’s a boy, win William Frank as a backup if I really feel differently after baby is born.
Girl names are so much more difficult but I’m leaning hard toward Ruth Catherine. I just can’t stop thinking “Ruthie” when I picture having another girl. Fx DH doesn’t mind too much that I’ve kind of decided unilaterally here...
@maureenmce I love the meaning behind the name! Our boy name is a maiden name as well and less traditional than Fox. Lol. And William will definitely be the middle name for ours as well. Our daughters name was taken from two family names on my side so this baby will get family names from the hubs side. All the boys in his family have William, Charles or Thomas in their names. Love the name Charles but our dog is Charlie and Thomas is my father-in-law, a brother-in-law and a nephew. So they aren’t really options.
TW: It’s my husband Mother’s maiden name and she has passed on our second anniversary:( End TW
@maureenmce I really like the names with Fox as a middle name.
We are also planning to give the baby my husband's last name and my last name as a middle name. I could fight for having my last name as the last name, but it's honestly not that important to me and it's really important to my husband.
@maureenmce I really like William Fox. I like how much meaning the name has for you. I also (personally) prefer William as a first name but having family / friends etc. have him go by Fox. I appreciate that you have expanded your list but I think finding an alternate name doesn't keep that same meaning you're looking to have. Again, just my personal opinion and no judgement either way!
@kristah2 I'm almost certain we will go with William Fox or Fox William - they're so sentimental and we've had them picked out forever. I just had a weird, "what if there's an amazing, perfect name out there and we overlook it because we're so stuck on this combo" thought! But I'm almost certain we'll go with the sentimental pick. I just know with my DD we went into the hospital pretty sure she'd be Tess, our number one pick, but then when we saw her we knew she was Rose, so I'm never sure now! Funny how those things work! But I think this time around he'll either look like Fox or William (or a William we call Fox.)
With our first I know it was going to be a boy as soon as I got my bfp. And we had already decided on a name for a boy before I even got pregnant so it was easy. But now I've only been finding girls names I like.... Boys names are very difficult for me this go around.
@selina1113 We are in the same boat. We had a boy’s name and a girl’s name picked out for years before having DS. Now, we are having trouble picking another boy name we both love as much as DS’s. I am almost certain we will have a boy. There has not been a girl in DH’s family in 60 years!
@katy0990 so far we've both agreed on Henry, Max and Andrew. I've been looking at names for a while and he just realized it's something we should be thinking about lmao
I just thought of a possible boy's name: Espen. I knew an Espen growing up and it's a very common name in Norway. I'm Norwegian and like the idea of combining a Norwegian first name with my husband's Chinese last name. I just suggested it to my husband and he looked at me like I had two heads. Is it that weird?
@kadeephd it sounds a little like ESPN, and I think you might have people assuming that’s why you named him that, but if it doesn’t bother you, then go for iT!
@runrinserepeat I was Googling about the name and came across a board where someone was asking about it. Her husband wanted to use it BECAUSE of ESPN. Everyone on the board said it was a stupid name. The ESPN thing honestly hadn't even occurred to me. I am not a sports person. I have been reading articles about the potential downfall of ESPN to comfort myself. They are losing subscribers so they might not be around forever.
@kadeephd there are people who have actually named their kids Espn and pronounced it Espen so I would always think of ESPN if I saw that name.

@kadeephd I like the combining cultures in the name. But if Espen isn’t a name your husband can get behind, are there other Norwegian names he might go for?
I am just starting to think about names this time. Last time we nearly went with Alexa (Lexi) for a girl. Since then, I am annoyed that Amazon’s Alexa has started to be a thing. Is that enough of a reason to not use a name we both like? I can’t decide. Thoughts?
@Katzalia I have found Norwegian girls names I like that I think I could get my husband on board with, but I'm struggling with the boys name. Espen seemed promising but stupid ESPN had to go and ruin it.
I think Alexa is fine to use even with the Amazon thing, especially if you are planning to call her Lexi.
I wouldn't use Alexa (or Siri, for that matter). As much fun as it might be to wreak havoc with other people's digital assistants if your child visited their home or they put you on speaker phone or something, those names are just too closely associated with the the technology. They're in the same category as, like, Remington or Nike or Bentley or Chanel.
@kadeephd fwiw I like the sound of Espen. but I think it depends on what kind of community you’ll be living in whether the ESPN thing is roo much or not.
@kadeephd Unfortunately, like others have said, there are sports fanatic parents who name their kids Espen after ESPN. ESPN actually aired a mini documentary on it some years back, so it is definitely a kind of common thing! (At least common enough to fill a mini doc.) It's a cool name though!
I like Eleanor (after my grandma) and my H likes Sylvia, middle name either Jane or Marian. No other contenders at the moment. I don't know who will win this battle, but I have a feeling it won't be decided 100% until she's born.
