Re: Names

  • We have been talking about this baby for over a year now so we mostly have it down especially if it's a girl. DH wants a girl since we have our boy already and all his friends have girls. I'm happy with whichever. So, for a girl I have Silvia Grey/ Stella Grey. I also like Madani. For a boy I haven't looked at names yet but would like Grey in it too. Can you tell I'm a huge Grey's Anatomy fan? hahaha YUP! DH likes the name Dimas for a boy but I'm definitely not going for it.

  • Lots of really good name ideas here! It’s fun to read everyone’s favorites and see so many family names passed down. I really like the name Fern, but we probably won’t use it. SO has a one syllable last name, so I feel like the first name needs to be at least 2 syllables.
  • Just bumping the baby names thread and inviting @salleah to pose her question here! :)

@tumbleweed-1 I love the name Fern by the way! I am kind of bummed that I feel like I need to axe any botanical names since we already have a daughter named Rose! (I love basically all botanical/flower names - Dahlia, Ivy, Violet, Laurel, Daisy, ugh, sad to leave them all aside this time!) Since you like Fern, do you like any other floral/botanical names that are two syllables?
  • @maureenmce Just have a floral theme!!! One of my top girl names is Lily, so I feel ya!
    *Loss 8/2014*
    *Rainbow 8/2015*
    *Expected Rainbows 12/2018*
    *Loss of Twin 5/2018*

  • @maureenmce My SO had suggested Rose/Roslyn as a name he likes, but my middle name has Rose in it and I’d feel weird naming a kid after myself in any way.

Other names I like are long enough, but aren’t botanical at all: Madeline, Theodore, Wolfgang, Josephine are the ones I can think of right now. SO only likes Theodore from that list. He also suggested Delphine/Delphina, which is ok, but I don’t love it. I just really stuck on Fern. Lol
  • Current DS is Elijah (Eli) Joseph and DD is Lucille (Lucy) Marie. Their MNs are mine and my husbands, and I really love names that can be shortened. Adam and I don’t always agree on baby names though.. I wanted to name Lou “Sawyer” and he gave me the big veto.

Baby #3 contenders for me include

Arlo James (AJ - also nod to husbands initials) and Maxwell (Max) Clark. Also like Cooper, Spencer, Lucas/Lawrence (Luke), Gabriel (Gabe), and Levi.

Maxine (Max) Leigh and Violet (Letty). Also like Rosemary (Rosie), Isla, Beatrix (Bea), Nancy, Josephine (Josie), and Collette (Lettie).

Have been heavily leaning towards Max for boy or girl because I want to be team green and that makes it easier for me, haha.. but Arlo is really growing on me.

  • If it's a girl she'll be called Paloma Breeze. I smile every time i say it. If it's a boy so far we really like Stellan.

Our son is called Milo Wilder. We agreed on his names immediately which surprised us both because naming our first kid was a nightmare. It dragged on forever and I just ended up picking something off our list in the middle of my labour. We had her name legally changed to what I originally wanted about three years ago. What kicked that process into motion was me telling her the name and her absolutely loving it. So she went from Olivia to Harlow.
  • Boy: Theodore Edgar (Theo) it's his dad's first name and my PawPaw's first name.

Girl: we're not as sure about this one.  Current favorite is Ellyana (Elly) with a middle name of maybe Rose or Grace.  I love the name Grace but DH thinks it has too much religious context.

  • The name preston konnor keeps popping in my head for a boy. Spelled differently because. Fiance name is kody spelled with. k instead of a C. Haven't really discussed with him but i will....
  • We decided on Elliot for a boy but we don't know a middle name yet. I like Lea Elizabeth for a girl but my husband's not convinced. So we are still working on names. We currently have two, Addison who goes by Addie and Connor. We like unique names but not ones that might be a bit more traditional in spelling.

LOL! Saaaaame. If it's a boy I'd love a little Nathan Jr, but SO says hard no. :( Which is sad because Nathan is one of my favorite boy names.

@hallgire I love Nathan, but DH is not a fan. We easily agreed last time on one boy name and one girl name. We can still use our girl name, but a boy name will be tough!
  • We agree on a boy name as it's after his dad (William Edward) but he'd go by Liam, which I adore.  And our girl name is not settled upon, but currently a top contender is Olivia Harper.

  • We like the names Arthur, Archer, and Samuel for a boy. If its a girl it will be Iris Joy
  • I, too, am obsessed with names. Here are some of my favorites.

For a girl: Adelaide, Ione, Juniper, Hestia, Corinne, Dahlia, and Zinnia. I like nature and Greek myth-inspired names, apparently.

For a boy: Jasper, Clark, Theo, Ian, Uriel, Zeke, and Otto.

Unfortunately, all these are either too "out there" for DH's taste or they're the names of crummy people from the past. The search continues!
  • @cmjenkies I really like Arlo, too! Also a fan of Gabriel, Rosemary, and Josephine.
  • @pregalicious2018 our girl name is Adelaide Elizabeth! I think it's a beautiful, classic name, definitely not "out there"!

  • @CecilB93 I love Adelaide Elizabeth! I'm with you on the classic feeling of Adelaide. DH is kind of the Greg to my Dharma (dated 90s sitcom reference, but pretty accurate). I'm sure we'll find a middle ground between his tendency for normalcy and my desire to stand out.

@rlpointer I love the name Elliot! It was my top pick, Elliot Alan (after DH's grandfather and DH's middle name), but DH is firmly against it. If we have a son, DH doesn't want him to be named after him at all. And his grandfather never used the name Elliot - he always went by his middle name, Frank, so I was overruled!
We do have some agreed upon names, though! We've been talking baby names for a LONG time (like, years). Our top girl's name has always been Madelyn Suzanne (after DH's grandma, who he was super close with) and we settled on Derek John (DJ) for a boy's name (after my dad).
I really love some of the other girl's names that have been mentioned, like Laurel and Leigh, and I've always liked Cadence too! We don't really have any backups for boy's names, though, so I guess it's a good thing we're not having twins?!?

Edited b/c when I posted this first time, it only kept the 1st line of my post!

We’re pretty set on Charlie either way (Charlotte or Charles) but can’t figure out middle name.  I kind of like the idea, especially if a boy, of putting Charles as middle name and picking a first name I like better since I like Charlie but don’t love Charles, but DH thinks that’s crazy. I also love Quinn as middle name. DH was on board until he realized it sounds like “charlatan.” That doesn’t bother me but I recognize it’s similar to Harley Quinn, which is a little weird. Still, I keep coming back to it. Other ideas so far are Morgan, Ethan, Nolan, Amelia.
  • @nawmin +1 for Morgan! That's my name and i think it's just dandy.
  • @nawmin I have an Amelia and she’s lovely. :)

I love “classic” names (think like, British Royal Family, lol).
So I’m still stuck on Charlotte for a girl, that’s getting really popular now though. I also love Abigail and Madelyn. I love Catherine but it’s too close to my own name.
I like Nicholas for a boy. I also like William but that’s a family name so I don’t think we’ll go with that. I also like Theodore but I’m not super fond of the “Ted” nickname.
I have a long, pretty easy to make fun of maiden name, and my married name also lends itself to some teasing remarks. I can’t do anything about that, but growing up with my maiden name did make me hyper aware of being teased about a name, and I’m trying to do everything I can to make sure their first name doesn’t lend itself to that. It’s sad, but I’m sensitive to that stuff now.

  • @katem987 I love classic names too. Charlotte is so lovely but I get you about it being popular. What about Theo instead of ted?
  • @katem987 I second Theo instead of Ted.
  • I adore Ted (but then, I have a son I call Ned or Neddy). Agree that Theo is a good nickname alternative.

My biggest issue with Charlotte is the nickname Charlie. Sorry ladies, can’t do it. I do kind of like Chuck (a la Pushing Daisies) :D but I’m all about the royal names. I was so conflicted when Arthur was a top choice for Little Prince Louis. That’s my favorite boy name this time around and I didn’t want people thinking I was copying Kate Middleton, but a little more normalization of an admittedly older name like that would have been nice! I love George but I have a friend with a kid called George so I don’t think I can do it.

I also am not a fan of Charlie as a nickname, at all. We just may not do a nickname if we do that. I do like Abigail (Abby) though. I’ll have to mull that over with DH.
I like Theo! Idk why I didn’t think of that. So cute. I do also like George, lol. I do love Henry too.

My DH refuses to discuss names yet.  I think he thinks it's bad luck this early.  Nevertheless I've been obsessing for over a year now.

My husband is from Mexico, my parents are very much English- only speaking so we need a name that will work for both families.  Spanish names will be hard because my husband has a huge family and every name I've come up with in the past (before my being pregnant was such a real possibility he would talk about names) he's vetoed because he has a relative with that name that he doesn't want to name a kid after.

Right now I'm loving the name Ian.  It is the gaelic version of my husband's name so it's like naming him for his dad and, though it's not a Spanish names (that I know of), it would be pronounced the same in Spanish.  Also, I'd like to give our son my maiden name as a middle name and my maiden name is 8 letters long so a short first name would be good.

I also like Oliver and Marcus.

Sorry that jerks tease you about things that are mostly out of your control! Sounds like you’re in an excellent position to teach your LO that teasing isn’t funny, and that we shouldn’t be ashamed of our names.

(A family member’s name is Gay and I often was the first to deflect laughter, and change the subject)
