H suggested Imogen which is totally not his style. He likes masculine names for girls (think Blake and Carson). I think I like it... no easy nickname. I have always pronounced it “em-ah-jen” and apparently that’s the traditional “English” pronunciation (H is from England, so that works well). But, some others I’ve talked to about it thought it was “em-oh-jean.”

    what say ye?

Also, do you like it at all?

  • @F47 if I saw that on a piece of paper I would ask the person how they pronounce it bc I wouldn't want to butcher it.
  • @F47 I have always pronounced it im-oh-gen (isn't that how Imogen Heap pronounces it?) It's NMS but I think it works with the English connection!

  • @f47 I actually like it but pronounce it the way@legallykate spelled it out. I think it was from 10 Things I Hate About You? Maybe not I just looked it up and there’s no character named Imogene.

It’s probably my accent, but I say em-ah-gen and em-oh-gen the same way. I just don’t make “gen” “gene.”

    Stuck in a box!!

we have a children's book that was mine when I was little and now I read to my kids named Imogen's Antlers and I've always pronounced it "I'm oh gene" but I admittedly have no idea why. It's not my style simply because I don't know how to pronounce it and I'd hate for my kid to always have to correct people.

I like Imogen! That's the name of the best friend on 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' (who her dad called 'Dody'). It was actually one of my picks if we were having a girl but my husband said no.

I say “Im-uh-jen” and I do like it. There was an Imogen on UK Big Brother years ago and I remember liking her name then!

  • I say im (rhyme with him) oh gene
no clue if that’s right but I love the name!!! And I love Imogene’s antlers

Actually that’s probably why - I see from google that both spellings are correct but the nook uses Imogene which lends itself to my pronounciation

@derbysquirrel, I actually think Carson is really cute. But, it’s a big departure from my style. I like very feminine/old lady names. So...even though I like it, it’s almost hard for me to admit it. Plus, we have two boys, so I feel like we had our chance to do boy names and we should go girl all the way on this one. Time will tell...

  • I would say “I’m-oh-gene” because that’s how I always heard it pronounced in kids’ books (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever)
  • @mrs_drc_rn - Love your names! Piper is on our short list :)
I don't think you can go wrong with either but I'm obviously partial to Piper

Definitely using Irene for a middle name (same as my mother and I), but the only two names we seem to agree the most on are Piper and Amelia. I think I’m leaning a bit more towards Piper...
I would choose Amelia. Piper is NMS, I feel it is just so trendy. Nothing wrong with it though!

  • I love a lot of Irish-style names like Aoife and Catriona but DH seems to hate all of them. We’ve had a couple votes for Nora but I just don’t think it really goes with Irene.

Im trying to catch up on all of the names! I kind of prefer Sophie over Sophia. And I love Imogen but I always say it with a long e in the beginning.
  • We don’t know the sex yet but we’ve been tossing a few names around for both boy/girl.

    Thoughts of any of these?

Girl: Ingrid, Mae, Elizabeth, Amelia, Dorothy

Boy: Henry, Alexander, Gabriel, August, Simon

No MN yet and DDs are Georgia and Josephine.

  • @msmonalisavito - I'm going to be no help at all because I love them all. Favorites for each would be Elizabeth and Alexander.

Looove all of them but my favorites are Ingrid and Dorothy, and for a boy, probably Gabriel and Simon.  Also, your DDs names are some of my top picks if this baby is a girl!

@mrs_drc_rn oooooh love Aoife. That was my childhood BFF's name! Pity DH doesn't like them!

@msmonalisavito love them all. In order of preference:

    Amelia
    Dorothy
    Elizabeth
    Ingrid
    Mae

    and

    Gabriel
    Alexander
    Simon/Henry

  • How do you pronounce Aoife? I’ve never seen it before!
  • @hardlyhannah It was from Down to You with Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Julia Stiles. her character was named Imogen.

I always thought it was Im-uh-gin.

Yes!! Thank you! I had the right movie era at least.

I love all the girl names I can’t even rank them!

    Boy in order:
Henry - my oldests name, and the only boy name we could easily pick and both love. I still love it!
August - name I was crushing on for this baby before we found out it’s a girl
    Simon - cute

Alexander, Gabriel both are nms but honestly all the names are solid great choices

but as of right now DH and I are between

    Scarlett Anne
    or
    Ivy Paige

both my girls are flower names and I don’t want to be too cutesy and do another flower, but like that Scarlett is a noun name as is Ivy.

open to input! Naming a 3rd girl is soo tough!

    Hello from Detroit!

  • @msmonalisavito
    @rocknrollmom

girls on the baby names board think Ivy and Lily are too similar... does that change your thoughts on Ivy?

also my other daughter is Rose and it was brought up that both Rose and Scarlett are shades of red ( never really made that connection, always thought of rose as a flower, not a color)

thoughts on these opinions to rule one name out over the other?

or do I need to go back to square one? Lol

  • Hmmm
    lily rose and ivy
    lily rose and Scarlett.

i like scarlet better, the first set is a little too on the nose. Too fairy story.

If yiu you want more ideas both feel like simple classic feminine old fashioned names... or maybe a flower type name that isn’t as obvious? Like a name that means (flower)... or like... Margaret and use the older nn for it daisy. Or a less simple flower like... lily rose and hyacinth...
violet! That’s a more obvious one but prettier set!

there are a few nice options here https://nameberry.com/blog/flower-names

  • @derbysquirrel your DH is too funny, sounds like something mine would say lol

i think I’m leaning more towards Scarlett but the whole color thing I didn’t even think of!
I still really like Ivy but agree with @pghctwife that it seems more cutesy/fairy tale as a sibset than Scarlett

thank you everyone for the input!!

    I love Scarlett!

@msmonalisavito your entire list is great! I’m the odd one out and I love Mae. So uncommon, but easy to recognize and pronounce. You can’t go wrong with those options, though.

  • I really like Scarlett! I wouldn’t worry about ge flower thing. My grandmother has I think 4 sisters and they’re all named after flowers! She’s Violet.
  • Since yesterday DH and I are liking Cassandra. I like that there are a few nickname options, it's classic but not overly popular (I think I have met one in my life), and versatile based on whether she wants to go by the full name, nicknames etc in different situations.

But it is throwing me off a bit that I don't like Sandra but like Cassandra... is it weird that they seem like totally different names to me? (It's not that I dislike Sandra I just have known a few and wouldn't use it personally).

I also always get sketched out when it's not a name I have loved forever. But I don't know why that matters.... like I named my first son Adam, and it's not like every time I met an Adam my whole life I was like "YES! one day I will use that name" so really I don't know why that is any kind of barometer.

  • .^^ I don’t like Sandra but I like Cassandra. They feel like totally different names to me as well.

    I love Scarlett!
  • I like Cassandra! I wouldn't think Sandra automatically with that either - I go Cassie more so.

  • I never would have connected Cassandra and Sandra though I see they clearly are. All the Cassandra’s I’ve known have been Cassie
