Re: Weekday Randoms pt.1 2/19

  • @supersara2 with DS i had to provide similar reporting for my back issues to see if i was recommended for c section instead of vaginal. But gosh you got lucky with getting them after so long!

  • @zombiehoohaa I'll have to try the clorox, usually I don't have really harsh cleansers in my house because of allergies, but I also don't love having a pink shower! And I think what's been holding me back has been less the maintenance but the cost, although the overtone does help with both those things! I've still got some of deep treatment in extreme pink, probably enough for two applications of it and some of the daily conditioner. Thinking I'll give it a try with what I have at home and see how it goes without having to go in to lighten my hair again. If it turns out gross I'll just wear it in a bun until it fades. I'm just so bored!

@gingerbride26 I love rose gold hair! So pretty! Luckily my job only requires our appearance be kept up, but no rules for hair color. Thank goodness for a creative field even if my job isn't creative.
  • My random thought for the day : FTM here...is it weird that I think I want all new stuff and not hand me downs? I don’t want to sound ungrateful but for some reason I have it in my mind that I want all our own stuff for this baby. Anyone else feel the same with their first?
  • @ashbub714 for certain things yes but others we quickly learned it’s way too expensive and some are pointless. I’m sure we all have those feelings at one point. I’m not shy on hand me downs but my husband like getting his own stuff.
  • @ashbub714 I felt like that until I saw how awesome some hand me downs are. The baby doesn't care...as long as it's clean and functioning, bring on the savings. I'm splurging on a new stroller, car seat, crib, the biggest items...but I have 2 used swings and rock and play and lots of hand me down gently used clothes. Who wants poop and spit and whatever else on expensive designer clothes? I'll obviously get some new outfits too, some probably will be too cute and less practical but I'm super grateful for all the used 6 months onesies I got! Especially because I can leave some at the in laws' place in Texas!
  • Thanks @wildtot and @kissableviv ! Maybe once I actually start buying stuff and seeing all the money flying out of my wallet I’ll get over it. Lol
  • @ashbub714 I don't think it's weird. I typically prefer new over old. Although like @wildtot says, things are expensive. Plus, I have no idea what my kid would want. She might not want a rock 'n play or something. So it's good to try out certain things before buying them, if you can borrow from a friend (and then even keep, if they don't want it anymore). I'm all for taking hand-me-down clothes, too.
  • @ashbub714 I never turn down hand-me-downs but I kind of feel the same way.  I just like to buy new stuff.  I am obviously reusing some baby gear and some clothes from our older kids but I like to buy new clothes and we're getting a new car seat for this baby and some other things.  I just love baby gear and feel like the new baby should get some things that are specifically for them!

  • @ashbub714 I don't think it's weird to think that way. I felt that way for a long time, considering everything I had growing up were hand me downs and I just wanted something that was mine for once. However, I've changed my mind now! I don't mind gently used things when I can get them for free or a discount. There's things as @wildtot said that I want new, but others I won't mind used.

  • @ashbub714 With my first I totally felt that way. I hated when people wanted to bring me hand me downs. But now that I’m working on my third and all the expenses of one are times 3 (five or take a little) I enjoy hand me downs more. Especially if they’re free. I like when other people spend money on nice clothes and I can use them again for cheap!
  • @ashbub714 not weird at all! But like others have said, you may find yourself coveting an euc item for less than half the price of it new. You just have to decide what you're ok with buying or borrowing used, like easy to wash baby gear and toys, and realize that baby is only going to use it for how long and is buying it new worth it.

    Isabella & Julian & and now #3!
  • @ashbub714 I felt that way until my sil and sister both explained to me how expensive things are going to get, very quickly! I am getting  A LOT of hand me downs because I have siblings who have kids ranging from 8 months old - 8 years old (boys and girls). I've been given a bassinet that was barely used, a pack n play that was used once, a glider, and a crib. Also, once we find out for sure what we are having, there will be bags full of clothes ranging in newborn to 8 years old. It really depends on the person, I believe. You do you, boo!

  • @ashbub714 not weird at all. I prefer new stuff too, not because I really care about something being used but because I like picking out exactly the stuff that I want.

I bought one used thing, a double Bugaboo stroller because there was no way we were spending the $ on a new one. Otherwise, I go new, especially clothes.

  • Thanks everyone! I think you’re all right. Easily washable items I need to rethink whether I really have to have them brand new! I could probably save a lot of money if I get that out of my head. And I’m sure my husband would appreciate that. Although now that I think about it I don’t know his preference on new vs used.  :)

@runsomewhere I think that’s part of it for me too - I want to pick out exactly what I want for my baby. But I guess If someone else has exactly what I want I shouldn’t immediately be turned off bc it’s used.

Eh, I say you can do whatever you want, who cares, your money, your baby, your choice. Obviously don't go in to debt over baby stuff but if want fresh, brand new baby stuff there is nothing wrong with that.

  • @ashbub714 I took so many hand me downs, some of which were life savers, including clothes. However, I had a friend gift me 4 huge bags of boy clothes and her taste was not mine, so I didn't even take some out of the bag because I thought they were ugly. So I have a limit to my hand me down using and my hubs is well aware that regardless of sex, this baby will get new outfits as well, even if we have 9 tubs of boys clothes (probably 6 hand me down) downstairs sorted by size.
  • @TalesOfASocialIntrovert You were protecting your h from the Doritos...good job!

  • Bahahaha, yeah @zombiehoohaa that was my secret plan  :D:D:D
  • I was literally just thinking about my spicy Doritos that are in the car.

I also have a full bag of spicy Doritos :# Shopping while pregnant and hungry leads to strange purchases!
  • Yes, especially for the big ticket items I want what I want. But other items, especially the ones that we don't even know the baby will like, I'd rather borrow or get hand me downs. I think it will be awesome to have extra clothes that I can just keep in the diaper bag or in the car for emergencies and for the in laws to have a mini wardrobe in Texas:)
  • Dang it, I literally just got myself unhooked from the extra hot Cheetos, and now I need Doritos! Or the Paqui Ghost Pepper chips, anyone ever have those? Sooooo good.
  • @TalesOfASocialIntrovert but they are soooo yummy!
  • @TalesOfASocialIntrovert I second the weird purchases when shopping hungry and preggo...I bought a box of chocolate cake mix and icing to make cupcakes and have so far stopped myself because a) DH wont eat them b)I certainly don't want DS eating a bunch and C) that means I have to eat a lot of cupcakes before they go bad, lol.

@ashbub714 totally normal I picked a few must haves for new such as our travel system, our swing and monitor. I initially really really wanted everything new but as I saw things start to total my opinion started to change and when I saw how I was often getting new if not barely worn lots of clothing for a fraction of the cost I really started to change my mind :) This time I really want to get a few things new for this baby but I am searching for a used rock n play something we didn't have with Lily but I want this time. also if you can do everything new that is okay too :)

  • @TalesOfASocialIntrovert I haven't gone grocery shopping solo in a couple of months now, I kept buying stuff I normally wouldn't. I need supervision! lol!

@smashjam Baking is one of my go-to hobbies, so my freezer is full of all sorts of things. I put them all into a freezer bag after they cool and I've iced them, and then can pull one out on demand when I really really need one. Freezing them keeps me from eating the whole batch!
  • @acunamatada I see no issue at all with the items you came back with!  One of my nieces has serious food allergies, so I always keep a batch of the special cookie dough I make for her in my freezer to always have something on hand if she's over. Bonus is that since there is no egg in it, you can just dig into and not bake it if so inclined. It's the best treat in the summer.

  • @SmashJam I literally just bought cake mix and icing on Sunday and I NEVER buy that stuff. I was craving cake while in the store and it looked so yummy plus they had whipped icing! I agree, grocery shopping while pregnant is definitely interesting @TalesOfASocialIntrovert

NOPE!  Not weird at all.  Especially if you know you want more kids; some stuff is kinda iffy as a hand-me-down, unless you know for sure there were no issues (car seats, strollers, high chairs).  I think towels and stuff to hand down are kinda gross.  Other things, like Boppys and Exersaucers and such are used for such a limited time (unless you're me and just got rid of the Boppy... like 2 months before finding out you're KU again) that they are typically ok.  But when it's your first and you're planning on more, I don't think that's weird at all.

I, however, will be taking what I can get because I'm not getting a shower the 3rd time around, surprise or not!

  • I have zero problems with hand me downs but I also wanted mostly new as a FTM. I took a hand me down swing because I wasn’t sure if baby would like it (then we used it so much we burnt out the motor) but everything else was new. Isn’t that what a shower is for?  ;) Hand me downs that I did get went to grandmas house because he spends a lot of time there.
This time around, I bought a second hand arms reach sleeper because I couldn’t justify buying a brand new bassinet when the pack n play we used last time is still perfect but I wanted something different.
If you do plan on more kids, I think new is better because you’ll put plenty of your own wear and tear on the items.
  • @lindsayleigh1989 what a bittersweet decision. I’m glad to you’ll be able to have some control over your birth this time around, I’d imagine waiting for labor and the unknown would be so hard given your last experience.
  • @lindsayleigh1989 so glad you’ve made a decision and are at peace with it.

I will have a repeat c too.  A VBAC was completely off the table per my doctors.  Actually they told me before I even left the hospital with DD that any future pregnancies would be c sections.  I try to focus on the benefits: I get to pick the day/time, will have much better planning ability to arrange care for DD, will have better planning ability at work for leave, and I know what to expect with a csection recovery.  Hugs mama.  I know it’s not an easy decision to make.  At the end of the day, you’re doing what’s best for you and baby, and that’s all that matters.
  • @lindsayleigh1989 i know i was a tough decision for you. Proud of you no matter what you decided. I hope your experience will be much better this time! I agree with @tarheelgirl8 it’s nice to be able to “plan” a bit better with a set date. I hope to pick my date at tomorrow’s appointment.
