February 2018 IUI

Hello all. I'm preparing for my second IUI, I hope you can join me here if you are too on the month of February. I really hope that this would be the month for us.

This is my 2nd IUI. I'll have an HSG test on Friday 2/2, that'll be my second too, I had my 1st on Dec 2016. I'm not on any meds yet right now, just for my DHEA, folic acid, a Chinese herb and Vit C,D,E.

Re: February 2018 IUI

  • Count me in, too. Second time doing IUI as well.

Today I am on day 5 (started Clomid two days ago) and am having weird stabbing pains I haven’t had before. Every five or ten minutes, a get a sharp stab in my right ovary area, almost like a strong pinch or knife jabbing me. I also have either an endometrioma or hemoraghic cyst there - not sure if that is the cause. Unfortunately since it is Sunday I can’t ask my doctor if this is normal...
  • Loading the player...
  • @scully127 Welcome and I'm sorry that you find yourself here. That stabbing pain is awful. I had that one whole day last month on both sides while I was trying for iui#1, but I wasn't on clomid, I was on Duphaston (a progestin). I had a chocolate cyst removed last year on my right ovary and now I got a 28mm on my left. My nurse did mention that I'd have these pains, but I think it would be a good idea to mention it to your dr on your next appt. oh but if your pain gets really bad like you have difficulty breathing better get medical attention right away. I hope it won't be the case for you.
  • Thanks for sharing your experiences. I will definitely raise it with my doctor. It has gotten better fortunately, but earlier today it was hitting me every five minutes or so.

Here is to hoping February will be successful for the both of us!
  • @scully127 Welcome! Sorry about the stabbing pain. Can you see if your doc will let you come on for an U/S? I’m one day behind you, also on Clomid (100mg) then 150ui of Gonal F Friday, CD 13 U/S Tuesday, then a pregnyl trigger. IUI #3

@tinjp78 Hi friend, thanks for starting this thread!

I’m currently taking a prenatal, 100mg of CoQ10 and 2000iu of Vitamin D. Starting a high protein, high fruit/veggies regimen tomorrow to help with egg quality

  • I am so new to all of this but I may be doing my first IUI in February.  We've been trying for over a year and I just learned I needed to be on Clomid.   My doctor said we'd do IUI after 3 months, since I just turned 36.  But my husband will be out of town when I should ovulate.  So, this cycle may be a complete waste.
  • @fertilizemeplease Is he going to be out of town the day you ovulate, or during your fertile week? Sperm can live up to 5 days - so if you can HIO as much as possible before he leaves, go for it! If he's going to be out of town when you do the IUI, maybe he can give a sample to freeze so you'll have it on IUI day? Either way, good luck!

  • Thank you so much for replying!!

I've only done this once so I may be getting the process confused.  I called last week on the day I started my period.  She told me when to start the clomid and scheduled me to come in for the ultrasound this coming Sunday (2/5 I believe).  My husband leaves at 6AM on Monday and will not return until Wednesday evening.

My first round of Clomid was on Dec 27th (the length of my cycle varies...one month it will be 35 days, then the next its 21 days.  This month I think it was 27 days).

When I went in last month for the ultrasound, he said follicles but my blood test indicated I hadn't ovulated.  So he wrote be a script for estrodial inserts and the progesterone shot to take if the inserts didn't trigger ovulation.

The estrodial inserts thankfully triggered ovulation so I didn't have to give myself the shot.  However, I got the positive O on that Monday night and he had to leave on Wednesday and was gone for the rest of the week.

So, if this month is similar to last month....I will get an ovulation positive on Monday night....when he is gone.

So, I honestly have no idea what the heck is going on, what I am talking about or what to do.
  • @fertilizemeplease This whole process is confusing - bodies are weird! So are they going to have you do the estrodial inserts again this month to help with ovulation, or are they going to have you use a trigger? I would reach out to your RE and explain that YH will be out of town on the potential IUI day, and if he could come and give a sample to freeze (I have NO idea if that's a thing, but it can't hurt to ask!) I mean, if they're bringing you in for an U/S I would think they're assuming you're going to be doing an IUI correct? Usually your mid-cycle U/S determines if your follicles are ready to be triggered to ovulate (usually later that day) with an IUI 36 hours later.  You definitely don't want to go into your mid-cycle U/S already having ovulated.

But, if he leaves on Wednesday - and you get a + on Monday, I'd have sex Monday and Tuesday if possible (maybe Wed before he leaves?) because your + OPK shows that you're gearing up to ovulate, so that's the time to start having sex. Then you'll still have great timing, and if he's going to not be able to provide a sample for the IUI, you'd still have great timing with TI (timed intercourse).

Sorry I'm all over the place - I'd start with calling your RE, explain YH will be out of town on potential IUI day, and ask what your options are.

  • Hello, can i join you ladies? I am hoping to start IUI with my new RE this month. My cycle was cancelled last month for 3 cysts and they thought one might be a chocolate cyst.

@tinjp78 - Your RE will do cycles while you have a cyst? Both my previous and current REs have cancelled cycles for a cyst and said I couldn't take clomid until they went away.

  • Hello @RVAmom315 and welcome @fertilizemeplease and @kistra

@fertilizemeplease I've got nothing more to add to what had been advised already. I hope that your RE could direct you to the best way to settle this scheduling ordeal. Good luck

@kistra Yes, we are proceeding with the cycles even with my 28mm chocolate cyst. On my last IUI last month, Dr had me take Duphaston to help treat that cyst. I really hope it goes away by itself because I don't want another lap- it could damage my ovaries in the process. I'm trying to search an do everything to treat this nasty choco cyst.
  • @fertilizemeplease I might suggest waiting until you know your husband is around so you don’t waste your cycle. I’m not a doctor, but I thought doing Clomid too much can have bad side effects like thinning your lining? But I would check with a doctor, because I don’t have a medical degree.

@kistra you sound like my twin. My last two cycles were cancelled due to cysts (including one where I had three big cysts). On my last ultrasound, they found what is either an endometrioma or a hemoraghic cyst. They can’t tell which and will try to see with time. I kind of wish they could give more definitive answers. If it is an endometrioma, then one probably has endometriosis, or is that a bad assumption?

@RVAmom315 I am scheduled for an ultrasound on Friday so I will just wait since all the pain disappeared. But I will definitely ask about it. Curious what my RE has to say.
  • Shout out to all my fellow February IUI-ers! Third time doing IUI for us, last month was successful but ended up being a chemical pregnancy :( I went for my u/s yesterday on day 12 of my cycle and my doctor told me to come back for another tomorrow.  I'm going to acupuncture tonight to try to get things moving - anyone else here doing acupuncture? I've got my fingers crossed for an IUI on Friday followed by a low-stress weekend with lots of BD! :)
  • @FutureMrsMerati I'm sorry last month wasn't it for us. I pray that we'll see lots of BFP's on this board. Friday is just around the corner, I'd be thinking of you that day and sending you lots of positive vibes. I haven't done any acupuncture yet but many ladies I met here who are TTC and some are now at the PAIF boards are doing/have done it.

@kistra and @scully127 I've been on the look out for somebody I can talk with about chocolate cyst/endometrioma etc. I know that it is common to have aches on the ovaries when we have them but sometimes I'm really not certain if it is just me or others experience them too. During my AF My ovaries area became sensitive to the touch and a bit uncomfortable, it went about 3days and it's gradually getting better now. Do you have the same experience?
  • Hey everyone! Thank you All so much for replying to me!! I really have no one to talk about this stuff with. I went over to my husband’s friends house late this evening to watch a basketball game.  I was exhausted and blurted out to all of his friends that he was going to get his sperm frozen on Thursday. He was so embarrassed and I felt TERRIBLE. I’m an open book, but he’s private.  I’m just so glad I found this board!!

So, I spoke with the nurse and I’m going in on Sun for my US and labs.  They’ll schedule the IUI then.  And we’ll be able to use his sample.

i asked the nurse today about success rates...are they diff with each clinic?  She said it was only like a 15% chance but that’s not too different from intercourse chances.

What do I need to be doing to make my eggs stronger? Acupuncture? Certain vitamins?
  • @fertilizemeplease I'm glad to hear that you and YH have a plan and it would be implemented so soon! I can only advise the basic stuff for your IUI prep, take your regular pre natal vitamins, keep you body well hydrated, avoid any stress like a plague and think positive.
  • @fertilizemeplease I’m the same way, I tell people my business but DH is a closed book. Since I’m old, even though I still have a lot of eggs I’m working on making them the best quality I can which includes:

High protein, high veggies, low carb, low sugar - basically all Whole Foods nothing processed (not the grocery store it just auto-corrects)

Prenatal with folate (not folic acid)
    CoQ10
    Vitamin D
(there’s others but this is what I’m on right now)

Theres a book out there called It Starts With The Egg which has a lot of good tips on making sure your eggs are in good shape

I’m glad you’ll be able to do the IUI this cycle. Good luck!

  • Just got back from my u/s and for the second time in a row, they've had difficulty finding my right ovary. They see something faint but said it's hiding behind my uterus. Anyone else have an issue with this? So frustrating to not know how many follicles I have.

    A couple of other questions:
Does anyone's office do an u/s the day of the procedures, or just a couple of days before to measure eggs?
Also, I see @fertilizemeplease mentioned having an IUI on Sunday. My RE office is only open M-F with a half day on Friday. Are all of your RE offices open on weekends? Starting to doubt my RE...
  • @FutureMrsMerati My left ovary does that sometimes - it's harder to find than my right. My RE said that my right ovary is an overachiever and looks good on camera (uh, ok) and my left is camera shy. This cycle I got a baseline U/S at CD 2 just to see if everything looked good (no cysts, etc) - he didn't do a follicle count though which bummed me out, and then I'm going back on CD 13 for my mid-cycle monitoring, to see if I'm ready to trigger. That's it. Nothing else except the IUI. They say that your follicles grow 1-2 mm a day, so if you go for your mid cycle U/S you can add 1-2 mm until the IUI for a good estimate on how big they are.
My RE is open 363 days a year - however they ONLY do procedures on the weekends (and IVF monitoring for ER) I had to go in Friday (last week) for a CD 2 U/S because they didn't do it on Saturdays (CD 3 which is the usual day for that). I mean, what does your RE do if someone's ready to trigger on a Friday morning? You couldn't wait until Monday to do the IUI, you'd have to do it Saturday afternoon, or Sunday morning at the latest. That seems odd to me considering so much of this process HAS to be done on a certain time/day.

  • @RVAmom315 The way your practice is set up makes sense, but it seems pretty common in my area that offices are closed on weekends unfortunately. So if someone is ready to trigger on a Friday, I guess they would wait and have you trigger on Saturday for a Monday IUI, or they would trigger you early on Thursday for a Friday IUI.  :s
  • *lurking*
@FutureMrsMerati - I would check in to other clinics around you and see if they are open on weekends. My current RE clinic is open on weekends for monitoring ultrasounds, lab work, and procedures if indicated. IUI/IVF is time sensitive and I'd want a clinic that is open 7 days week.

@dmo1371 I just set up a consult with another area RE with availability on the weekends. Thanks for giving me the push I need!

Updated to say that although my ovary was not super visible, they believe I have at least one mature follicle measuring about 20. Doing the Ovadril trigger tonight at 9PM and IUI Friday morning.  :#

Hopefully you won't even need that consult, but at least you have it just in case. To answer a couple earlier questions you asked -  my L ovary is hard for the techs/nurses to see. Usually they can find it with looooots of pressure, but I was told it wasn't uncommon. I was also told for IUI there was a 10-15% chance of success for us (only known issue is my PCOS and lack of ovulation). My RE said after 3 IUIs the chance of success drastically decreases. He said 80-85% of people who get pregnant with IUI do so within the first 3 cycles. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the warm welcome.

@scully127 - this is my first time with a chocolatecyst/endometrioma/hemorrhagic cyst I was definitely achy during AF. It seems a little better now but I don't know how much of that is wishful thinking as I really want the cyst to be gone so we can move forward with treatments. I didn't see my regular doctor because it was a saturday when i went in for my CD3 u/s in Jan but he seemed hopeful it would still go away in one month. When I had a cycle cancelled before it was just a regular cyst and didn't cause any pain and was gone the next month.

My old RE only did IVF on the weekend and not IUI, would either trigger in time for Friday or wait for Monday. My new RE is open on Saturday. My first RE would only do one U/S and then told me when to come back for the IUI a few days from then. My new RE is apparently going to do daily u/s until trigger day then IUI the next day.

@FutureMrsMerati - Good luck with your trigger and IUI tonight!

Hi guys - I'm having a TON of EWCM today and just felt some sharp pains. Our IUI is tomorrow morning - should we BD tonight in case I'm ovulating? I usually have no idea and don't feel anything when I ovulate, so this is new. Just worried if we wait until our IUI tomorrowe we might miss it. Any insight would be great!

Edited to let you know that our doctor recommends BD two days before and to avoid it the night before IUI to ensure a good supply.
  • @FutureMrsMerati Can you call the nurse line to get advice from your doctors office?

  • @FutureMrsMerati Good luck today! I know I’m late but I think you’ll be fine with the IUI today - they definitely want no less than 2 days abstinence before so you’ll have a decent sample.

Both my IUIs I had 3 measurable follicles. IUI #1 were smaller, two 14s and a 16 (50mg Clomid, 300 units GonalF) IUI #2 were better 17, 20 and 21(100 mg Clomid, 150 units GonalF) I’m on the same protocol as IUI #2 so we’ll see how my follies look on Tuesday.

I didn’t notice any side effects from the injectables (Gonal F) either time

  • A bit of good news here, my HOMA-IR results came back and it's normal! Also, I just had my 2nd HSG and there is no problem! Yay!! It's just that I already have a couple of 10mm follicles and a trilaminar uterus so early on my cycle of CD8. So, I'd be taking some meds to slow down this progression. IUI #2 here we go!

@FutureMrsMerati  Did you BD 2 days ago or yesterday as your Dr recommended? If so then you shouldn't be so worried since the sperms could stay in you for 3 days waiting for your egg to fertilize. If not, I guess it would still be ok to BD tonight if it'll make you feel at ease but the supply of the SA that YH would give tomorrow might not be enough as your dr had warned. This is just my 2 cents, i agree with @kistra on getting some advice from your clinic.
  • Errr...durn... time difference (I'm in Japan). I just noticed now, my message is probably so late. Anyway, GL with your IUI @FutureMrsMerati.. sending lots of positive vibes your way
  • Can I jump in?  I was supposed to have IUI #1 in November but got benched due to polyps.  Had hysteroscopy and D&C to remove polyp and to encourage a better lining to grow.  Finally ready for IUI #1 this month.  I took 5mg letrozole days 4-8 and and I'm going in for mid cycle u/s today.  My clinic is open Saturdays for procedures, but not for u/s so I'm day 11 today (typically have done day 12).  I'm thinking/hoping they'll want me to trigger tomorrow so DH and I have time to BD tonight and then IUI Monday.  I've been out of town so we haven't had a chance to BD since CD5.  All this timing is hard when you aren't sure exactly when your IUI will be  :#

@FutureMrsMerati  Let us know how it goes today!  Also, in all my TI cycles I've had just one (twice) or two (once) predominant follicles.  From what I recall, I think they ideally want one so that you don't risk multiples (though I would welcome them!!), and two is ok, but going beyond two can be risky in terms of multiples.

  • Ugh, so bummed today. Went for a day 10 ultrasound and they had to cancel my cycle due to risk of high order multiples. I had over a dozen follicles in large and medium sizes. The doctor said he never sees such a response to 100 mg of Clomid (he said it was like IVF treatment). I had a very normal reaction to 100 mg of Clomid last time (only three large follicles) so not sure what triggered the change this time. I had to sit out my last two cycles due to cysts, so feeling a bit discouraged whether I will get to do another IUI soon.
  • @FutureMrsMerati it is interesting how each clinic tells you something different. My doctor always tells us to BD the night before an IUI and the night after the IUI (with the IUI in the morning in between). But then my husband has good numbers so maybe that is why?
  • @scully127 i'm sorry, that is frustrating.  i can relate from my experience in november.  i really wish our bodies were more predictable.

AFM, today at my day 11 u/s I had a few follicles in the 12/13 range and one at 14.  since they don't do u/s over the weekend, they want me to use OPK to monitor ovulation.  If I'm surging Sunday, they'll schedule IUI Monday.  If not, I'll go in for another u/s on Monday, trigger, and probably IUI Wednesday.  I'm feeling anxious because I've always been ready to trigger on day 12 in the past so I'm feeling like waiting the whole weekend is risky and Wednesday seems so late for IUI.  Then again, our bodies are not machines so I will just trust the RE's advice.  He told us to BD tomorrow (in case IUI is Monday), so we'll go with that.

@scully127 I'm sorry for the cancelled cycle. I would normally be thrilled to hear lots of follicles growing but when the word 'risk' comes up, I'd tone down my enthusiasm and listen to the doc. Your safety is definitely first. I guess even though you are benched this time, you got the chance to prepare once more for another cycle, like keeping fit, having good rest, and everything else to get ready for the coming of your lil one.

Welcome @wishing-and-hoping  @Chartleib  @mybabylove2018. I hope we get to see lots of BFP's this month!
