January Symptoms Thread

I figure our symptoms are generally easing off, but I saw it mentioned we could still use a thread... so one thread for the month of January, and we can always restart it if it gets super long?

What ailments are you suffering from at this fine moment?
How's second tri treating you?

Re: January Symptoms Thread

  • Please don't tell me I'm the only one still not sailing through this pregnancy unscathed.

16+ weeks, and I definitely have the increased nasal issues that I read can come with second tri. Bloody noses on occasion, and generally feeling like I have a head cold that really only effects my nose....

Still nausea in the morning, but I don't throw up as often as I used to. One day I won't need a Zofran at all, and the next I'm taking it every 4 hours. It's glorious.

  • @izza2 Ugh, solidarity sista! I hope you start feeling better soon, but I am definitely right there with you.

With DD, i had MS until the day she was born.  I was kinda hoping this time it would taper off, and while it's definitely better, it is at its worse between 4pm and 7pm.  Makes eating dinner so hard.

I am still having some pretty consistent lower back pain that circle around to the front too.  Thankfully i have an appt tomorrow, and i'm definitely going to ask.  The same thing happened last time with DD around this time and it was a UTI so i've been pounding water and cranberry juice.

Honestly, i really hate pregnancy :( I hate feeling like crap all the time.

  • @izza2 Sorry you're still feeling nauseous  :( FX that part clears up for you sooner than later.

Totally with you there on the nasal problems.  I haven't been able to breathe (or sleep) properly for 3 days because my nose is so stuffy.  No clue whether it's a cold or pregnancy related.
  • @izza2 You are not alone. I tend to have pregnancy rhinitis throughout the duration of pregnancy, but it seems worse through the winter. I try to neti pot as much as I can stand, but it doesn't always help. Hope the day comes sooner, rather than later, when Zofran is a thing of the past for you.

Pregnancy, as a general rule, is perpetually unkind to me. As of right now though, aside from the never-ending congestion, I don't really have any other symptoms, other than being hormonally off the rails and impatient AF.
I love DH, but nearly everything he does drives me crazy, mostly for no good reason. I really have to stop and take deep breaths before responding to him sometimes. Anybody else finding themselves extremely irritable, especially where their SO is involved?
  • @izza2 @becca_123  @kfren I've been having the congestion too. I started sleeping with two pillows at night so that my head is propped up more and it's helped A LOT. I can actually breathe through my nose all night finally. I have a saline rinse bottle (like a neti pot) but I haven't used it yet since things seemed to get a bit better.

I had to take Tylenol for the first time last week for a headache that would just not go away. I was pretty hydrated so I don't think it was that, but who knows. I do find myself needing even more water than before lately so maybe I just need to up my idea of "normal".

    (TMI part)
Thankfully no real constipation lately but my bowel movements are just much less consistent than pre-pregnancy.

  • Headaches are still coming and going, probably 2-3 times a week but tylenol followed by a few sips of caffeine usually knocks it out. Lower back pain has started and as I was walking through the grocery store yesterday, I started feeling pressure in my vagina which after lots of googling told me that it's likely just my uterus continuing to expand and I had to pee so the added pressure from my full bladder didn't help!

+1 to feeling impatient and easily irritated @kfren and +1 to congestion. Neti pot has really helped and also nasal spray to turn off the endless snot faucet.

  • I still pee every 15 min, get bloody noses regularly, and I have a weird muscle twitch thing happening right below my rib cage on the left side. No idea if the latter is pregnancy related but it’s annoying AF. It’s been happening for four days now. Sigh.
  • Yes to the congestion. So annoying! I really need to get out my sinus rinse bottle  (new one stashed away).

  • @kfren +1 on the irritability with DH.  Pretty sure he makes attempts to avoid me which makes me more irritable  :D  I find myself complaining a lot when he doesn't do certain chores (or adds to them by dropping laundry wherever he is) which has always been an issue but I keep thinking I'm not going to have time for this sh*t when the baby comes.  Thus I think it gets me even more irritated than usual.

@harveyabbey77 you reminded me of the severe back pain I had yesterday, although how I could forget it I'm not sure.  I was folding laundry and my lower back started throbbing in pain out of nowhere.  I had to lay down until it stopped, which was only 5 minutes, but it had me concerned during that time.  I googled it and it just seems to be one of those pregnancy related things.
  • @becca_123 The laundry thing is obnoxious! We have a laundry chute in our bathroom, and it freaking kills me that he consistently leaves clothes on the bathroom floor. It's like, dude-pick them up (you don't even have to bend over-can even use your TOES to do it!) and turn the maybe six inches to the chute and bam! Your work is done. I feel like he leaves clothes there specifically to make me insane.
  • So glad you brought this back, I was going to ask in weekly questions if anyone has been having shortness of breath? I've been taking a deep breath every couple minutes for a few days now out of necessity. Last night I couldn't sleep because I thought I was suffocating. I'm sure the anxiety of it didn't help me relax and breath better. Part of me wonders if it's due in part to nasal congestion that you all are talking about because when I breath from my mouth it seems slightly better... But boy I was ready to go to the ER at 2am last night! I do have an appt for my anatomy scan and will see the perinatologist on Wednesday so if it doesn't resolve by then, I'll mention it.  Seems to be common in 2nd trimester but this is the worst symptom yet.
  • @stephcat421 that is a very scary feeling! I am also finding myself winded and I definitely picked up a cold last week making nights horrible. I have slept sitting up for 3 days and wake up every 3 hours which leads me to blast my nose with saline spray. Sorry to everyone dealing with the congestion or any illness for that matter. I can't wait for spring.

Yesterday I started getting short but sharp pains on my right side. Tomorrow I'll be 17 wks and still no movement feelings. Heard heartbeat on home doppler. That shooting pain was no joke tho. I was on my knees.
  • @izza2 you are not alone, friend. I am hoping once I start feeling baby moving, I'll feel more magical. So many talk about feeling great in the second tri, and don't get me wrong, the first was way worse so I am trying not to complain, but I definitely have a long list of new symptoms now.

My nose is super stuffy.  I am not nauseous but I absolutely still gag when my stomach is empty, something is nasty or when I go outside in the cold. Cold air has always made me gag occasionally, it's just amped up during pregnancy.

My sciatic nerve is angry. I can't stand still for more than 5 min without my outer thigh going numb and also hurting. Same for laying on my left side. It wakes me up in the middle of the night hurting so bad until I roll over. Rolling over is already hard because I'm pretty sure I have some pubic bone issues going on. I have such a deep ache up in there, where for a month, I have thought is my cervix or actual vagina, but based on what I've been reading and sex not hurting, I'm starting to think it's the bone. I need to see a chiropractor because this is not going to get any better.
  • @ramblebee I'm with you on the short sharp pains. Mines on the left side like a little lightning bolt. Going to try yoga/stretching to see if that helps.
  • First things first, I have a ton more energy and motivation in this second trimester which I’m really appreciating. My blood pressure was high and so they had to put me on some meds three times a day that were making me so tired. I did a lot of aggressive napping for a while, but my body seems to have adjusted and I feel a lot more functional on them now.

Count me in for a pregnancy rhinitis. So irritating. I went right from being sick to this symptom amplifying. I basically have tissues around me all the time, used ones littered around in unattractive decoration. DH complains that he’s sooooo tired of me blowing my nose. Not as tired I am of of blowing it though, buddy!

In relation to this fun symptom is the peeing on myself. Omg I must have no pelvic muscle strength and Kegels make me sick to my stomach. Every time I sneeze or cough or blow my nose too forcefully, it’s tinkle tinkle. I need to buy some panty liners.

Lastly is just the crotch pain. It remember it intensifies for me as baby gets heavier. This is earlier than last time but it just feels like pressure/sore muscles in my vagina. Like I went mountain biking up a steep hill. Ouch.

Anything for you though twitchy, popping inside baby. Kissy kissy.

  • +1 to nasal congestion. @stephcat421 I've been getting shortness of breath also. I'm fairly certain mine is a combination of my asthma being worse during this pregnancy, the nasal congestion and then whatever else pregnancy related. My OB mentioned that tachycardia and shortness of breath are both fairly common pregnancy symptoms that are considered normal. It sucks.

@izza2 I'm sorry you're still struggling with morning sickness. I'm right there with you. 17+6 and I'm still nauseated and throwing up. I thought it would be better by now.

@doxiemoxie212 right there with you on the super frequent bathroom visits. I'm hoping that eases up soon because I know with my son it went away during the 2nd trimester then came back with a vengeance in the 3rd trimester around 32 weeks when my son started dropping lower. I really want a break before baby is squishing my bladder.

  • @NamelessAria I can't even imagine what 3rd tri is going to be like because I already feel like she's squishing my bladder. She flips around a lot, and when she does it, it literally feels like someone is squeeeeeezing my bladder out like a tube of toothpaste lol.
  • @doxiemoxie212 I try not to think too much about the 3rd tri. The pg books I'm reading scare me. My doctor told me at my 14 week appointment to just enjoy the 2nd tri. So I'm trying not to rush anything.

  • +whatever to nasal congestion, especially when I wake up.  I wore a nasal strip (so hot) last night to bed and it helped - - I was able to breathe upon waking.

I've also been getting headaches and trying to drink more water.  I'm not peeing more, so I think I'm just dehyrdated.
  • I'm not falling asleep by 10 every single night! I can actually finish a show with DH atleast 1-2 times a week lol

But my hip pains (sciatica?) are annoying. Doing to much really sets it off and I feel sore the rest of the day.

  • +1 to stuffy sinuses. I also picked up a cold last week and I keep waking up on my back because apparently that’s the only position that allows me to breathe.

Other than that.. heartburn, heartburn, heartburn.

Also bending over is already becoming a challenge and makes me so short of breath!

I will say though, my energy has increased again and I am loving it! I hated feeling SO unmotivated in first tri!
  • I’m with everyone on the congestion and also having bloody nose issues.

One weird thing I’ve has a couple times is an intense shooting pain in the right side of my Ute when I go from sitting to standing. It is absolutely blinding in its intensity. It keeps going until I’m fully upright. It is almost like my uterus just doesn’t want to straighten out. It is the only symptom that had really freaked me out. Going to talk to doc about it at my appointment on Thursday.

  • @izza2 I'm still a little queasy. With my other pregnancies the MS lasted til 17 weeks (I hit that benchmark this weekend.)

@kfren @becca_123 +1 to irritability with DH. Every. little. thing. he does is driving me crazy. Especially his cheesy jokes.

@bkrahn I just started Zantac because I was waking up with heartburn pain.

@NamelessAria My asthma is always worse during pregnancy.

  • @LaceyBee522 round ligament pain FTW
  • @LaceyBee522 yep, that’s good ole RLP. Solidarity, friend.

  • Indigestion from hell. Heel pain, it's so bad. I hope I can make it to my appt Thursday and that the doctor will have a safe fix.
  • @stephcat421 I've had shortness of breath for like 2 months now. It gets so bad at times, I've considered going in to the er. Miserable!

Holy heartburn! It's so bad already. I had it super bad with my son, and he came out with a full head of hair, more hair than my daughter had by the time she was two! If that holds, this baby is going to be part bear.
  • I hear you all with the rhinitis and RLP (my RLP seems less now than it has been though). I’m still tired but with nothing like the exhaustion of the 1st trimester.

I have my energy back as well as my appetite! I even worked out (gently) today.

I still havent gained any weight. My ob hasn’t mentioned anything. My BMI is currently 26, I’m not underweight, so I’m assuming that’s why.
  • @helenbz I've only gained 3 pounds. Granted I was definitely overweight to start with but my docs haven't been concerned so I'm not either. Plus, I really don't want to gain the 40 + lbs that I did with dd either if I can help it.

  • I’m exhausted this morning with nothing but pregnancy to blame so symptom it is. I feel like I didn’t sleep at all last night. In reality I got like 8hrs. Counting the minutes until DS is ready for a nap because I am so ready.

  • @kfren my husband is the same with his laundry. Lately he’s also been leaving the toilet seat up too. With having to pee even five minutes I’m noticing it more.

Quick symptom question: I keep getting this weird pain that feels like something popping/snapping. It's always up near my belly button but more to the side. It's generally happening when I'm holding my son but not always. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I never got it during my first pregnancy so I'm a bit clueless. Confession: the first time I felt it I thought it was baby kicking then I was like "uhh I don't think a baby that small can kick that hard."  :s

ETA: I'm assuming it's a ligament or something stretching. It's at the top of my uterus so that seems too high for RLP just based off what I've seen in diagrams and what I've read but who knows.

  • You guys. My appetite is insatiable.  I am trying to make mostly healthy choices but the amount of food I can consume now is just ridiculous.  I lost about 50 pounds before conceiving and did it by logging calories. I'm still logging them but I'm used to eating 1800 a day (while losing) and now I am eating about 2500 per day. I haven't gained but a few pounds, but am shocked that I am legit hungry every 2-3 hours. I eat string cheese, Greek yogurt, meat, beans, so it's not like I'm not getting enough protein.
  • I never had braxton hicks with DS.  I'm getting them almost every evening after exerting any energy (walking up stairs, cleaning the kitchen, putting DS to bed).  They suck.

I'm also hungry all the time.  I went to my last appointment (A/S Ultrasound) and was down 3 pounds from the prior visit (which could simply be because it was a different scale).  I've taken that as an excuse to eat at least another meal a day.  That's not good.
  • I can usually get through the day without any extra snacks/meals from pre-pregnancy but the last week or so I have been starving at about 9:30 pm. I am quite enjoying my late night bowl of cereal.

My shoulder popped out of its socket when I was reaching across myself in the car to grab my water bottle. A combination of I think the odd twist/angle, the full 32 oz Nalgene bottle and possibly relaxin softening my ligaments? Although I'm not sure it would affect my shoulder or that it would be this early.

  • @krashke relaxin peaks at 14 weeks, so you definitely have plenty of that in your system. It affected my wrist literally as soon as I got a BFP, confirmed by multiple doctors. "Pregnancy just makes your body go haywire sometimes." Great, thanks.
  • @amys614 my hunger has been crazy the last week. I've been doing two sandwhiches for lunch and still starving after. I normally eat like a bird so this is crazy to me. Even my last two pregnancies, I don't remember this hunger.

My left eye keeps twitching. Supposedly it's a symptom from not drinking enough water, but I'm getting 8 cups a day, so maybe I need more? I'm gonna drown lol
  • @May14th2011 8 cups is the reco for non-pregnant women, so pregnant women generally need a lot more. I think they reco 100 oz?
  • Headaches and insomnia are my only symptoms.
