Re: January Symptoms Thread

  • I have a weird pinched nerve or something along my left hip.  When I lie on that side if feels like I'm lying on a small rock or something, and then eventually the area goes numb.  It's been a couple weeks and hasn't gone away :(

  • @krashke @amy614 @marcus7676 I always find I'm hungriest in the 2nd trimester.

No concern about too little weight gain here... I'm up 15 lbs at 16 weeks (gulp.) I gained early with my other 2 pregnancies, too. With my other pregnancies I still only gained 25 and 35 lbs. total. I seem to gain slowly after my initial blow up in the first trimester. It's definitely not the way most  articles say I should gain but it seems to be how my body does pregnancy and I've had normal sized babies. I think some of the early weight is from a carb-heavy diet in the first tri. but I also think I just show early and my fluids increase early (amniotic fluid and blood). My BMI starts at 21 and currently is 23 so I'm not overweight. Still the 15 lb. number on the scale is a bit traumatizing.

@doxiemoxie212 @krashke Relaxin can throw your body for a doozy. I threw my back out last time sleeping on an under-inflated air mattress. My body couldn't handle the lack of firmness and I was in pain for a week.

  • @llamamama14 heyyyyy weight gain sister! I didn't gain any weight until 16 weeks, and then in the last 3 weeks, I've gained 12-15 lbs depending on how the scale feels throughout the day.
  • @doxiemoxie212 and here I thought I was doing good to get 8 cups in. Guess I'll crank it up lol
  • My symptom lately is non hunger. I get full so easily (I made too much Raisin Bran this morning and now can’t eat lunch). I’m plus size so I’m not worried about it, but I’m still kind of bemused at my food apathy. One slice of pizza and I’m full, that sort of thing. I remember this happening last time as baby got bigger but that was later on down the road, so I don’t know. I checked my weight today and I’m three pounds lighter than the last time I checked.

  • Glad I'm not alone. I hadn't weighed myself during this pregnancy 'til last weekend and I was a bit wide-eyed at the #.
  • @llamamama14 I hate all these books and articles that suggest there is some "right" way to gain weight during pregnancy. Assuming you have no major health issues and are a generally reasonable human about your diet and activity level, I am a firm believer that our bodies know what to do to grow a baby.

  • @marcus7676 are Braxton hicks common this early? I've been getting this tightening/'squished insides' feelings at the very tip top of my bump (where it hits my ribs) every evening. I figured it was my stomach just literally getting squished cause it was happening with DS due to my very short torso. But maybe it should BHs.

also, anyone get very very mild period-ish cramps. I've had a few yesterday and today. Had me worried. But telling myself it's just stretching and growing. I haven't noticed much bump growth lately so think I'm due.

  • @catlady1215 I had mild period cramps a week or two ago. It alarmed me a bit but they went away. (I don't remember this happening in previous pregnancies until labor commenced.)
  • @catlady1215 BH can definitely happen this early esp as STMs.  I've been having them at night too.  For me they feel more like a tightening, and makes my chest feel all weird and anxious haha.  And i've been getting the vv mild period-ish cramps too.  I asked the doc yesterday and he said it was totally normal for STMs. Something about the uterus just going back to what it was used to haha.  I've been using a heating pad at night on my lower back, and that seems to help because i find they get worse when my back hurts lol

  • @llamamama14 @doxiemoxie212 oh thank heavens I'm not alone! All I've heard is no one gaining, or some losing. It's had me highly stressed but I'm tipping the scares up 18lbs already.  I too had a carb heavy first trimester and am hoping to level out going forward. Also, my activity is picking up again so I'm looking forward to a plateau for a while!

@catlady1215 I read BH can start at 7 weeks! FTM usually start feeling around 16 weeks. I'm not sure I'd know the difference between them or RLP. Do you think your discomfort is from RLP?
  • My friend who is a L&D nurse HIGHLY encourages the daily water goal to be 1 gallon.  She gave me the scare talk of reinforcing how if you aren't properly hydrated your baby is 1) not swimming in enough liquid and/or 2) your baby is swimming in dirty fluid.  She said when she as women come in triage who are dehydrated and their water already broke she can always tell that they were dehydrated because they smell (that dirty water the baby was swimming in).  That grossed me out enough to stay hydrated.
  • @catlady1215, what @sunshineandwhiskey said. I think for STM's its much more likely to get BHs early and often (at least that seemed to be the case in my informal survey of my BMB).
  • When you ladies say 1 gallon or 100oz of water, do you mean plain old fashioned water or does some of it count from other sources like tea and the mound of watermelon I just consumed?  I know plain water is best but if that's the case I seriously need to step up my H20 game.
  • @becca_123 I try to make sure I have at least 100 oz of actual plain water. Then I figure whatever other beverages I consume (tea, La Croix, juice or ginger ale) is just extra fluids.

@llamamama14 @sunshineandwhiskey @stephcat421 @marcus7676  all reassuring to hear, thank you!

@stephcat421 honestly, not sure lol. even with my son, I never knew what was RLP or just regular stretching. I've always thought RLP would be more of an 'ouch!' type of feeling. I've had some of that with strong sneezes etc. This is just very very mild. atleast its not consistent!

definitely going to up my water intake! I was doing good and I think I did slack off a bit this week. And I don't think I'm anywhere near a gallon! I might hit 70 onces on average.

  • as for weight gain. I'm with you girls. I haven't checked in a couple weeks, but as of then, I was up about 9. so I'm scared to see now. I'm also short and had alittle extra weight already so ick, it shows. I gained 40lbs with DS and it was getting packed on consistently till I got that GD diagnosis, that definitely helped. hate to see what would have happened if I kept eating the way I was before I 'diet'.

@stephcat421 @marcus7676 I'm a TTM but I've never been aware of having Braxton Hicks. My mom thinks I have them but don't notice. I also can't tell what's stretching/ ab soreness and what's RLP.

As for water I don't track it but I'm constantly guzzling pregnant or not. The OB was commented "wow that's a lot of fluid" when she broke my water last time.
  • becca_123           From what I understood (this convo was with my first so it has been a little bit...) other fluids counted if it wasn't a diuretic (coffee, tea, etc).  So with watermelon/cucumber being mainly water I would think it would count at least partially (how you judge how much I don't know).

@ratparade - ha!  yes..I gave her the same look when she told me, lol.  On a regular day I can easily go with only drinking probably 24 oz of any type of fluid total...eek.

  • @kmurdock925 ughhhhh I really need to work on my water intake. I am prolly one of the worst ever with it. Does anyone have tips?

  • @sunshineandwhiskey - this is probably extremely silly and something I would do to coax a child to do something...but I seriously get so motivated to drink more water when I get a new fun/cute water bottle.  So dumb...bonus points if it has markings of how much water is in there.  If you need a little flavor get one with a fruit infuser insert and you can put berries or cucumber, even herbs in it for a little "extra".
  • @sunshineandwhiskey what's the problem? Do you not like water? Use to drinking other stuff? What? Because we can give you tips but if you don't actually like water I can't see them helping unless its to flavor or modify the water.

Here's my schedule, I work 9:30am-7:30pm: 2 cups before leaving for work/breakfast, 2 cups between arrival & lunch,  2 cups with lunch, 2 cups from return from lunch until the hourly staff leave (4:30), 2 cups from there departure and my departure, 2 cups with dinner, 2 cups with a workout/ nightly wind down.

  • I second large water bottles. I find if I know exactly how much water fits in something, and I can drink from a straw or squeeze top or something, I drink way more than I would out of a glass. I'm not sure why. I think maybe since it's not an estimation but I actually can know the amount I'm drinking, I stay more motivated?
  • Oh, also know that you need to add an additional glass of water for every hour of exercise, I believe. And if you drink anything that has a diuretic effect (tea, coffee, etc.) you need to drink an additional glass for that.

I'm def not doing as much as I should, though, so right there with y'all.
  • @sunshineandwhiskey Like @ffw0617 said if it's an issue of you not liking water that will be hard to overcome.  But if it's an issue of just forgetting, I have a similar schedule.  I put about 12-16oz of water in my morning smoothie, and then try to drink my 20oz cup at work before lunch.  I try to drink two more (40oz) before I leave work (at 5:30).  I don't measure after that, but I always have water with and after dinner and before bed.  Drinking water before bed does make me have to pee during the night, but I always get really thirsty then for some reason.  I also have a high vegetable diet so this adds some extra water.  This gets me somewhere between 80 and 120 ounces a day.

  • @kmurdock925 thanks!!! It’s so funny you say that - I just got a new bottle for Christmas and it has def helped. Still no where near what I should be. I think I’m maybe at 20oz a day and it’s worse when I’m home and on weekends. *runs away and hides*

@ffw0617  I was just kinda looking to see what others do. There really isn’t a problem per se. just laziness and often an after thought.

  • @sunshineandwhiskey I have no idea why, but I drink a ton more water out of a straw bottle than just a regular one. I don't know what bottle you have now, but I have one of those bitey-straw bottles from Camelbak (I have this one, and I believe Contigo makes similar ones), and for some reason I just love drinking out of it.

  • I too have a specific 32 oz water bottle at work and at home that I use to track how much water I've drank. One in the morning before lunch, one in the afternoon after lunch and one at home in the evening.

Also if you feel like splurging do yourself a favor and get a Yeti cup. Your water will stay nice and cold all day!

  • Drinking water has never been a problem for me, as soon as I was old enough to know what a calorie was and how they work I decided why drink your calories when you can eat them. If I eat fast food and the meal comes with a soft drink I always exchange the drink for a milkshake (Homer Simpson drool... now I want a milkshake) and just drink water.

  • @sunshineandwhiskey I hate drinking water. I have had more success using Nuun tablets.

    https://nuunlife.com
  • I'm sick of puking. It's lessening, but I want to be done with it. Otherwise I feel ok. Still super tired but I think it's because I can't sleep. I just roll around all night!

My new symptom is that I can hear my heart beating in my right ear, pretty much all the time now (pulsatile tinnitus). I am so hoping it goes away after birth.  My heart rate goes way up doing the littlest of activity so I'm trying to drink more water (got a nice new 40oz bottle so I can refill it less often at work). I also wonder if I'm anemic- I suck at eating animal protein and with all the nausea and vomiting I haven't been eating that much anyways. So I'm sure I'm not getting enough protein and more than likely missing out on iron. (my prenatals are iron free- I've never been constipated in my life until the beginning of my pregnancy and I do NOT want to enhance the constipation that is likely coming for me if I can help it!!)
  • @bearmoons ahhhh the most annoying symptom ever- pulsatile tinnitus. I had it intermittently until about 12 weeks. So irritating. Sorry girl.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @bearmoons if you're struggling with animal protein, are you able to eat leafy greens? You can get plenty of iron from things like kale.
  • @doxiemoxie212 normally, yes. I love veggies. Since being pregnant, I have, but they come back up. Various forms of potatoes and broth with noodles work. And plain bagels. Yay for empty calories. I tried a vegan protein drink today and it was awful. I drank it all because it was $4, but it came back to haunt me later.

@lisa2589 OMG it's the worst. Have had it a couple weeks, initially it was intermittent and now it's just constant.
  • @bearmoon that’s unfortunate. Maybe you’re struggling with protein in general? If you’re concerned about anemia you can probably find some iron rich foods separate from any protein.
  • Hey ladies! Just getting caught up here after a long night at work. Boooooooo!

@sunshineandwhiskey I am with what the other ladies have said. I do so much better with a straw. I have a giant 64oz bottle with a handle and a straw. I add a bunch of ice and fill her up. It's easier for me than counting small bottles. I basically know if I drink the better part of 2, I am good. I also love a product called True lime. No sweeteners or anything.  Think it's essentially just crystallized limes ground into a powder. Think they have lemon and orange too. I just like a squeeze of citrus in my water. This is my lazy way out of remembering to always have fruit with me for water. Also hate how the water gets bitter if an actual lime or lemon sat in the water. I used to carry the packets in my purse to add to vodka sodas before. Haha

@bearmoons sorry you're still feeling so yucky. Hope it lets up soon. I am not hearing my heart beat in my ear but as of this morning I FEEL it everywhere. Pulsating. Behind my eyes, in my finger tips and toes. It had me so freaked out,  I checked my blood pressure three times today.  My heart rate is also very sensitive, even being on a beta blocker. The joys of all the extra blood...

@kmurdock925 I think I gagged a little bit thinking about dirty smelly water.

+1 on the weird pains. Sciatic nerve, leg, whatever it is. Also can't tell the difference between BH and RLP but I definitely had some cramping this past week of some sort more than the usual discomfort of stretching. Also still failing on being good at telling the difference between stretching and cramping. 2 opposite actions but my newb pregnant self has no idea. All I know is that it's uncomfortable.

  • @bearmoons - I had low iron with DS.  My OB didn't want me to start iron pills, so she told me to up my iron intake. I started eating hemp seeds every day (2 TB) and my iron got a lot better.  Maybe see if there are other iron rich foods that would work for you?
