This is probably a dumb question but what's the difference between a baby shower and a sprinkle? Google says it's for second, third, etc babies.

I feel like baby showers are more elaborate. People expect to bring bigger gifts etc. Sprinkles are more like “let’s just get together and celebrate this baby but you don’t need to buy me a new baby bouncer”. I feel like its more about the size of party/intensity of gifts haha.

I view it as you shower the mother into motherhood with her first child. A sprinkle is for any children after that. And I think a sprinkle can be more regional. They aren't as common around me as they are in other states, from what I can tell the last time I was on a bmb.

@JNCPro3130 Sprinkles are definitely regional, and the context differs depending on the region. It’s either for a second or subsequent child, or a child of a different gender. In other places a sprinkle is for a large gap between children.

thats exactly what I think of!
definitely regional. I’d never heard of it and I think I’m my area it would maybe be a little taboo? Maybe my crowd just doesn’t like Showers in general though

My question: what are some things you’d always buy new versus could buy secondhand? I’m thinking big things like crib, high chairs, etc. versus littler purchases like clothes that can definitely be reused by multiple babies as fast as they grow

@allie0320. Baby mattresses are always supposed to be bought new and while you can use a second hand carseat, it cannot be expired or have been in a car accident. I think everything else is ok off the top of my head.

Yeah, unless you personally know and trust a person, I would not get a second hand carseat. It could have been in an accident and have internal damage you cannot see.
I also see the point in a new mattress.
Everything else is pretty fair game. We have a lot of sale sites on our local Facebook pages that have everything you can think of for a kid. And because they grow so fast, most is pretty much like new.

I’d just always do a new car seat and new mattress. Crib should be okay second hand, you just want to make sure it’s not a drop side crib.

I think everything else would be fine used? As long as it’s in safe, working condition and that the model hasn’t gone through any sort of recall (swings, anything with a motor, or questionable power source).

I think only mattresses and car seats should be new, unless you really know and trust the person. We had a lot of friends give us their play mat, swing, etc. I had no problem using second hand items.

-bedding (I’m weird about used bedding haha)

Used:
-pretty much everything else. Babies use everything for such a short amount of time, it’s not worth paying full price if you can avoid it.

Im still kicking myself for spending $80 on a jumperoo at Target and he used it for four months. He LOVED it but I should have checked the B/S/T sites first.

I threw out my instructions for my anatomy scan tomorrow, should I have a full bladder going in to it? Any other instructions I should be aware of? I should have called the office today and asked.

For mine, I drank half of what I did the first time (datinf ultrasound) only 1 hour before because I was in so much pain from holding it and ended up having to pee some out because the tech said I was too full lol.

During the anatomy ultrasound the tech told me that I didn't even need to drink water beforehand because baby is so much bigger now and my bladder showed up as full on the screen! Wish I would have known that going in but the instructions said to drink water 2 hours beforehand (glad I scaled back!)

@bwow615 you don't need a full bladder. Just easy access to your stomach.

I had to get a vaginal one too (forgot the name) because apparently the new requirement there is to check the cervix every time. Not sure whether that's hospital, state, or federal law.

I don't remember and I didn't get instructions. I know I'll have to go in a cup whenever I go so I always drink extra on the drive there and then refill my bottle while I wait for my appt.
Maybe you can do that and ask when you arrive?
At the er on Saturday, the tech mentioned towards the end something about "now that your bladder filled back up, maybe I can get an easier reading on this measurement".

suchaglencoco Facebook Marketplace is amazing. There are uppababy strollers for 150$ near me!

Sprinkles seem gift grabby to me, but that may be a common regional thought where I am, or maybe I just don't like shower in general.

Question: Those of you with dogs, how was introducing the baby and dogs? I have read so many conflicting strategies. One even said to give your dogs less attention before baby comes. I cannot fathom that!

I only use mobile and I copy and paste then adjust the bold font option so that my responses appear clearly from thr questions.

@bwow615, I was told to drink 32oz of water the hour before the appointment. The instructions said that if your bladder isn't full they'll have to reschedule. She did her measurements and then let me go to the bathroom. She was like "yeah, you're really full." I just followed directions! I have to go back in 2 weeks. For that appointment she said to drink water but it doesn't have to be so much.

@justsuzie, our twins were in the nicu for a couple of weeks. We would bring pajamas for them and then bring them home to wash. We'd let the dogs smell the pjs and we'd talk to them about the babies.
Our lab knew something was up every time I got pregnant so I think she internally knew something was coming and changing. We let them roam and smell everything in the nursery.
When we brought home DD, I held her and DH brought the dogs over to smell her and they were completely fine. Then we did the same with DS. They basically ignored them unless they cried or pooped. If we were taking too long to make a bottle and one of the twins was crying, the lab would come bark at us. Or when they'd poop, she'd point to them or come sit by us and look at them. It was kind of cute.

Every dog and every home is different, but I think purposely giving them less attention is cruel! Our dogs are our first babies. Actually, I think we tried to make a conscious effort to give them more attention throughout so they didn't feel ignored.

@suchaglencoco I have been bringing my dogs to my bf's house where her baby is always screaming and crying. I hope that we are giving them some exposure. Our dogs are our first babies as well.

@justsuzie, this is something else I did, moreso when they were puppies, but I did it again when our twins became more mobile.
When we would feed the dogs, I'd stick my hand in their food or semi push or pull on them while they ate. Not a lot, but just enough for them to know it's ok for a human to do it. DH thought I was nuts, but we had nieces and nephews and I never wanted it to be an issue while they visited.
Now that the twins help feed the dogs and mess with them while they eat, we have zero problems. And my methods don't seem as crazy to him, haha.

One thing I practiced well before baby was walking the dog with the stroller. That took her some getting used to!

My dog has been great with the boys, but we've had to make it a point to make sure she gets some special one-on-one time every day.

@justsuzie with baby number 1, we played audio of babies crying to get our dogs used to the sound. My husband ran home from the hospital with a hat DS had been wearing and let the dogs sniff it. When we introduced them we made them sit, stay, keep their distance at first, when they were calm (they were excited bc we were back after being gone for three days) they were able to come smell the baby. One was very interested, the other stand offish at first. We didn’t leave them alone together even for a second, and didn’t leave him on the ground around them for at least 10 months. Even the very best dogs can react poorly if scared by tiny, impulsive humans....they all get along very well!

@bwow615 I was told to drink 24 oz of water 1 hour before my appointment. Then the tech spent an hour pushing on my bladder. Good times!

Thank you all for the feedback on how to prepare for the as! i will drink a decent amount an hour or so before the appt.
@lincbeesmom I have the ultrasound first and then I will meet with the ob after, so I bet I will have to give a urine sample after the us. But typically yep, I always have to pee in the cup for just the normal visit.
@justsuzie we had 2 big dogs when I was pregnant with DS, the only thing that we changed was that we didn't let them sleep in bed with us anymore. One was a gsd, the other a newfoundland. When we brought DS home the gsd was super interested and protective over him and the newfoundland couldnt have cared less about him. We also didn't leave them alone unattended. When DS was 7 months old our gsd passed away and we got a golden retriever puppy, DS loves both of "his doggies" and they are so good with him. This was them playing tonight after dinner

I am jealous of all the good dog stories. We sent a hat home too with my parents to let the dogs smell him while we were in the hospital. My miniature dachshund is 14 and already an asshole. As long as the toddler stays away things are fine, but we don't leave them alpne. He has only nipped at him, but it sucks. Our lab mix would be so wonderful and is most of the time, but has lost sight in one eye and is skiddish if the toddler comes at her from her bad side and you can't exactly tell a 2 year old to only approach from the left lol. She would never hurt him, but I would love it if she would let him be more affectionate or play more. Our next dog won't be for a while, but at least they will grow up knowing DS and DD and not have been only pet children for so long.

When we move to Facebook, remind me to show y’all the videos of DD using my lab and shepherd as step stools. And dragging the lab by the collar saying “lay down! Come on! Walk!”

I cant remember how I introduced the dogs. They’re both so laid back and chill that I never put any thought into it. DD hand feeds the shepherd his breakfast one piece at a time. I adopted him right before I found out I was pregnant with her and he was my baby and always had his head on my belly. He’s currently asleep under her bed. My lab dies a little inside when another animal/human/thing comes in the house but she’s not going to react.

@bwow615 im obsessed with your Newfie. I had a Pyr and love a sweet gentle giant!

suchaglencoco We actually did that too for the nieces and nephews that came to visit when they were young enough to forget about not messing with the dogs too much. Both dogs were great with that. I better start doing that again though.

@tincupchalice Never even thought of that. SO smart. I will just look like a crazy lady with an empty stroller and 2 dogs. Totally makes sense.

holli0801 Did you never have them on the ground together or only when you weren't right there with them?

bwow615 Holy smokes big dog (and cute kid). I have a feeling one of my dogs will be the protector and the other will just wait till she drops food and can throw a ball.

Feeling A LOT better about this dog introduction thing. Thanks everyone. One of my dogs has been sleeping on my stomach since about 13 weeks......I think he will be the protector.

@justsuzie we have two Corgis and they were so spoiled before we had DS. We used to let them sleep on the bed with us and we ended up re-crate training them at night. They are herders and we didn’t want them underfoot when getting up for middle of the night feedings or barking.

Once he was born, DH took a blanket home from the hospital for them to smell until we were discharged. When we brought DS in the house in his infant seat, we let the dogs sniff him. They were very curious and interested in him as a baby. Now that he’s older, our older dog really dislikes him. He’s too busy for her, but she also knows to keep her distance and she just leaves the room or perched on top of the couch to avoid him. He younger one is a loveable dummy and tolerates all the running around and craziness. He likes to come in DS’s room for our nighttime routine and let’s DS pet him.

My dog has some serious issues and I'm hoping they don't get worse with #3 arriving and another move right away, but she has always been so good with the boys. She's a horrible leash walker, pulls so hard... but the moment you put one of the toddlers on the end of the leash she's good as gold!

@tincupchalice Mine are both horrible leash walkers so I know this is something I need to work on. But, we always have them off leash. It will be super helpful for when I want to walk baby in the stroller and get out this summer!

I think i made a mistake scheduling my next appointment. I'm supposed to be doing there glucose test. Is that between 26 and 30 weeks?
