The Nursery

Who's doing a new  nursery? Any ideas?

Anyone redoing your current little ones room to make room for 2?

What is your plan for your lo room / sleeping area once they get here?

  • @mamaof5already - I love that theme!

I haven't thought about our theme just yet, but will be keeping an eye on this thread for ideas.
  • We plan on room sharing until baby is 9 months like we did with DS. At that time DS will be a little over 2 years old. If baby #2 is a boy we're hoping to have them share a room but not sure if we'll do that right away or wait until Baby #2 is steadily sleeping through the night. So no new nursery until 9 months or so
  • @mamaof5already Our themes are super similar. We're even working on painting a mountain mural. I'm going for travel/adventure.

This is our first baby and we have an empty bedroom that has just been waiting to be used. A part of me is looking forward to getting started, another part of me is overwhelmed at the idea.

We'll have a bassinet in our room for an indefinite period of time, then move him to our spare room. I'm not planning on doing any huge renovations (painting, e.g.) because we plan to move in two years. I'm going to get some cute little prints for the walls but otherwise no real "theme." When we get a new house I'll decorate, and maybe by then the kid will be able to provide some input about what he wants :)

ETA to remove the link and just post the pics directly (from society6.com):

  • We are room sharing till DS2 is around 18mo.  It's not preferable, but I need to wait till he is sleeping good. So whenever that is I guess…  Then I'd prefer to move him in with DS1. Since DS1 will be in kindergarten he needs to sleep good... so we will see what happens.  I am missing planning a nursery this time around…  it was so fun doing DS1 and DD!

We have two other rooms, but they are down in another part of the house and I'm not really ready to move DS1 down there alone so young.

Have any other STM+ moved their  one-year-old in with a five-year-old?

    Imma send you a message!
  • I am team green and planning on using our current nursery again.  DD will get her big girl room sometime before the baby is born but I don't plan on moving her out of the nursery until I'm ready for the new baby to move in there.  DD slept in our room for 4 months so I'm thinking along those same lines again.  Unfortunately DD's new room will be on the second floor (our master and the nursery is on the first).  I have some reservations about not being on the same floor as her but I don't know what else to do.  I don't think I can have them room share all that effectively and I don't want new baby in our room longer than necessary.
  • Our smaller extra bedroom is beside the master so that will become the nursery. Hubby is a pilot so while we don't want to go full 'airplanes' we want to do a bit of a 'world traveler theme'

we have a beautiful big wall map picture that we will move in there and we will see about what else to do. The picture is fairly dark and masculine so we may lighten up the room a bit for a girl with a mint green paint.

  • I've never done a nursery. We co-sleep from birth until whenever. He'll eventually share a room with his brother. We may come up with a theme for their room later on. Probably a "heroes" theme with a mix of Star Wars, MCU, DCEU, and The Princess Bride.

  • I love looking at nurseries, but we won't be doing anything special because the baby room will double as our guest room. Plus we plan to move whenever the metro is built our way (sadly, this got pushed back to 2020 omg) so don't want to do anything in the short term. Plus, really, I'm not stylish enough to coordinate a whole room, lmao.

@chucksmom15 I LOOOOOVE those puppies playing sports.
  • Thanks @clc515!  It's kinda perfect for us lol
  • Look at all you creative ones. Our third room has a sailboat theme from the previous owner. Guess this kid gets a sailboat theme!
This ^^^  DS2 has his nursery finished--DS1 was recently evicted.  I am putting it back in "newborn" baby shape and it's done.  Poor kid.
  • @RSB1982 I am in the same situation with having to move DD1 upstairs. She will be 2 and a half in February. Not exactly looking forward to that transition. How old will your DD be?

We are also team Green and were last time so my DS's room is yellow and is Winnie the Pooh themed. The new baby and our DS (27 months when baby is born) will share a room. We have another room in the basement but l don't want to put our DS down there this young!
He has been a good sleeper and I'm hoping it works out!!

  • Love the ideas! We'll plan more after our anatomy scan, but LO will go into our spare room. They'll be with us in bassinet for first 6 months or so before we transition them into the crib.
  • DS1 and Ds2 will share a room once DS2 is around 9-12 months old or when ever we stop breastfeeding. Which ever comes first. I'm trying to find sheets for a crib and matching sheets for a twin size bed but I can't. I guess I'll just get plain sheets and stick to a color theme.
  • LO will share a room with DS when she is ready, at least that's the plan. She'll be in our room until she's 6 months so hopefully by the time she switches DS will be ready for a toddler bed and she can have his crib. His room is a loose monster theme, walls and crib are gray and everything else is orange and blue with some monster paintings on the wall that I did in college (I was an art major and did an illustrated book my senior year, they're cute not scary!) I'll probably divide the room in half and have the monster stuff on his wall and maybe more girly stuff on her wall that goes with the gray and blue stuff I have in there already. I just hope they can sleep in the same room or my plan will be a bust, lol.

  • @meatballs37 I didn't even think to do that! My husband buys his dress shoes like that because we are frugal!

  • I have one coat of the gray wall done so far. Cream/white, black, gray colors with an outdoor vibe.Nothing too involved or
fussy though because I change my mind so frequently. We got the cribs off the amazon open box option. I highly recommend looking at that instead of paying full price for things. We saved a few hundred bucks so far doing that.
what is the Amazon open box option?

Wow! I don't even know where to start - so stylish! That rug is gorgeous!!

Also, where are those crib sheets from?
  • @meatballs37 that rug!

  • @meatballs37 I want those crib sheets for my own bed. Thanks for the info on Open Box, I'll look into that for a monitor. They're so expensive!

  • @kbrinks2 We are doing a Winnie the Pooh theme this time, too! My mom had a bunch of decorations from when we were kids she gave me, and I have found some really neat stuff at thrift stores. We live near Disney so it's pretty common to find Disney stuff in second-hand stores and garage sales around here.

For DD's nursery I did a storybook theme. I knew we were going to be renting for a while after she was born and wouldn't be able to do too much to the walls, so I turned my baby shower into a painting party. Everyone was asked to paint the cover of their favorite children's story for the nursery. I had a ton of books there (used to be an elementary school teacher) so people could look at the cover, and brought transfer paper for people who didn't feel comfortable free handing. I was nervous that the guests wouldn't like it, but everyone REALLY got into it and had a great time. Here's the stuff from DD's nursery for anyone looking for something along those lines.

I had some misc. stuffed animals and decorations I put around her room, too.

We moved a few months ago and I didn't really decorate DD's room in the new house because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do about her big girl room and new baby's nursery. I decided to move the paintings into the playroom and now that room has the storybook theme. I have a ton of Pooh Bear stuff and started finding some more stuff along that theme, so we're keeping DD's nursery furniture and will hang the Pooh stuff on the walls.

Haven't decided what to do for DD's big girl room. No idea, haha. So anyone who wants to share a girl's toddler room idea, I'd love to see some!

  • @meatballs37 Thanks for sharing! It's very sweet. We're keeping DD in a crib until a month before baby is coming because ugh I just can't even think about what bed time will be like when she can just get out of bed when she wants haha. Then we'll do a toddler bed.

For dresser drawers, I put baby locks on all her drawers and her closet drawers because her pulling the clothes out everywhere was driving me crazy lol.

  • Baby will be in our room for the first 9 months or so I'm sure. That's how long the other two were there. We are recycling the nursery yet again for this baby, moving DS2 into the spare room. We have a beach/underwater theme that we keep adding to with each kid.

Can you order online? Or do they not ship internationally? Cuz that would be a huge bummer.

You can order online! I just prefer to buy home things in person and I think you have to pay customs even if you return (but I might be wrong!).

Also, Bangor has Chick-fil-A & the Texas Roadhouse - both worth a three hour drive to me :)!!

  • @mayapple44 she will be just over 2 (almost 26 months).  I think she will still be in a crib at that time. I'm most nervous about when we transition to her big girl bed and she starts moving around the room/house on her own.  I'm going to put a gate at the top of the stairs and try to train her to talk into the monitor when she needs something.  So stressful!  What's your plan?
  • Love this thread! And I love looking at nursery stuff. We aren't planning to have an actual nursery though. We have a 2 BR house and both BRs are 9'x10', so pretty small. We are planning to have the baby sleep in our room in this "moses basket on a stand thing", (the mokee wool nest, it's cute too which matters when you don't want that much furniture), until the baby is strong enough to sit up. Then we'll move it to a crib in the other BR, which is currently being used as a dressing room/closet/home office. There are almost no closets in this house so we'll have to figure that out and still keep some wardrobe stuff in that room. And I work from home so part of that tiny room will still have to function as an office. It'll be a challenge but I'm happy with our tiny mortgage so we'll make it work for as long as we can.
