  • I don't go in until August 7. I will be 9 weeks. I can't believe they are making me wait that long!! And wouldn't you know it's the day of my significant other's first day of work in a new position. So, I'm not sure he will be able to go. Im
so bummed! I wanted us to be able to share that "first" together.

My first appt is the same day and Ill be about 9 weeks as well. Maybe call the clinic and ask if you can reschedule a few days prior so that your SO can be there?

@fullofhope25 Can you call and move it up a day? I really think it's important to do it together for a number of reasons.

@fullofhope25 Keep hounding them. Or maybe YH can push the start date back a day? It sounds like it's just a new position within the same company, right? "I've got a doctor's appointment I can't reschedule. It's taken ages to get in already..." BTDT, I wouldn't do that appointment without H.

You are right. I am going to call tomorrow and talk to my SO when he is off about pushing his start date back, if necessary.
  • Congratulations @Ktjennks!

  • Soooo strange. I called my OB's office this morning to see if I could change my appointment and she shared with me that this appointment would be to just confirm the pregnancy with a urine test, which I've already done elsewhere and a vaginal exam. She said that this test will not include a vaginal ultrasound and that will not happen until 12 weeks! That sounds crazy!!!

    Does that sound right??

@fullofhope25 It does sounds crazy to me, I think most of places do 8 weeks but I have heard of offices that wait until 12. I don't think I could wait that long, it's nice to know early on that the baby attached itself to the correct location (in my opinion). Others on here might have more insight on the topic than I do though.

@fullofhope25 *TW* It's actually rather common, especially if you have no history of problems. With my first pregnancy I didn't have an Ultrasound until I was 11 weeks - unfortunately by then I had lost the baby. I'm only getting my US at 5 weeks this time to make sure it's in the right spot, and not in my tubes again.

@fullofhope25 Every practice is different, but it is totally normal to wait until 12 weeks for an US.  If you have a history of loss or are unsure of your dates you doctor may order one earlier.  My OB office doesn't have their own US machines - I have to go to radiology for those appointments.

  • Thank you ladies! I just think it's a really long time to wait to make sure everything is on the up and up and a little insensitive to expecting families and any anxiety or apprehension they might be experiencing. It's almost enough to make me want to switch OB's.... I don't know.

@fullofhope25 I completely understand your feelings about it, even after what happened I wished they did an US sooner. However, even the small things can help reassure you that everything is fine. Perhaps they could check for a heartbeat at an earlier time for you or something? I know when I get good blood work back, it gives me a lot of hope.

Hmmm.... I'm thinking I might call back and ask to speak with someone else. Getting through to someone in the office is like trying to reach the freaking Pentagon!

@fullofhope25 It's within what's considered an acceptable standard of care in the US (but really, confirming via a urine test a 8 weeks? *Eye roll*). And I can see how some doctors might believe that early USes create more stress than they help but... *TW* No thanks. I still hate that I ended up waiting until 9 weeks, only to receive a devastating diagnosis. But I would so rather that than having gone on for another week or two and then being surprised and in a panic wherever I might have been at the time. I'm barely holding on until 7 weeks.

  • @kiki75 I'm so sorry to hear about your experience. That's awful! I'm calling back now to give them hell!!!
  • @fullofhope25 my practice does not do an ultrasound until the anatomy scan unless there's a medical reason to do. I didn't have one until 18 weeks last pregnancy and this pregnancy I have an early one only die to dating confusion.

Were you anxious to get one during your last pregnancy?
  • @scoogy19, this is us as well.

With my first pregnancy I only had a 20 week US. It's not standard here to have any others unless there are complications.

*TW* With my second pregnancy I went in for my first appointment at 12 weeks and found out baby stopped growing at 6+5. Then in my third pregnancy we got to have early scans starting at 7 weeks. Unfortunately we lost that baby at 15 weeks *End TW*

I think it depends on where you live. Things are very different in Canada.
  • @justkeeptrying I am in the US, not Canada! And still have that protocol.
@fullofhope25 initially when other people on my BMB were all getting ultrasounds I was a little anxious but I researched it and spoke to my insurance company and it was standard protocol! I got to hear the heartbeat starting at 12 weeks and then at each appointment. I knew that's just how it was and it didn't bother me! I actually almost prefer it over this time where I was anxious about not seeing much on the early ultrasound...
  • scoogy19 Gotcha. I have raised a little hell (so to speak) and I think they will relent and give me an US during my August 7 visit. **fingers crossed** But thank you for the added perspective!
  • My OB office now does an "intake" appointment between 7-9 weeks, then the first visit between 9-11 weeks.  First ultrasound at 12 weeks and anatomy scan at 18 weeks.  I had an early HCG draw at 4 weeks due to my previous loss. I had a few extra ultrasounds with my last pregnancy with MFM and likely will again this time.
