Cravings & Aversions Thread

I saw a few people mention cravings and some aversion on the symptoms thread, and figured that it could warrant a thread of it's own. (If not, let me know...this is my first time starting one!!)

So what are you craving? Anything crazy yet? What about food aversions?

If this is not your first pregnancy, did you crave or get disgusted by the same things or different things last time?

Re: Cravings & Aversions Thread

  • With my boys, I craved McDonalds and Mexican food.  With my daughter, I craved salad and fruit.  I'm not having any cravings yet, but I definitely know what I want to eat when I get hungry - I'm not indecisive in that way at all.  Lately, it's been a lot of fresh foods.  I wonder if that's an indicator of another girl on the way....??

  • @loganjsmommy1978 omg I can't imagine having a chocolate aversion!!! With my last, I craved marinara sauce (like, pasta...) and olive garden salad big time. DH has Italian heritage and was thrilled. So far, it's been the same this time around, the past week I've just wanted to eat all the marinara sauce.

I also went through a phase where I wanted McDonald's fries with Wendy's frosties. Lol...I wouldn't mind that one again either :)

  • My food aversions right now are pretty much everything.

I don't really have many cravings but the only foods I can stomach are bland breakfast foods-oatmeal, cheerios, waffles, etc.

  • It kind of went away, but for a week I was craving anything spicy, yet I couldn't taste the spice whatsoever. DH would cook something for dinner and put A TON of spice in it to make me happy and I didn't taste it at all while he was sweating it was so spicy for him. Also, things that were sweet were tasting salty. It was odd. Now I don't have an appetite for anything and don't even feel hungry.

With my last pregnancy (with DD) I craved everything sweet, all kinds of fruit (I didn't like fruit prior to that pregnancy), and pickles (ate a jar of pickles a day in the third tri and then wondered why I was so swollen). I had a major aversion to Greek yogurt, which I used to love, and still can't eat it to this day. Made me puke the second I smelled it.

Fried eggs are always my aversion.

With #1 I wanted pizza and toaster strudels in the beginning
#2- spicy food- the hotter the better
I haven't had cravings really yet with this one.

Potatoes. Specifically cheesy.  <3<3 Aversions would be my go to Coca Cola, Raspberry Lemonade, and the smell of tacos.  :'(

I've been hoping a post like this would come so I could find a new craving!

Edited because I forgot to mention previous pregnancies cravings/aversions: With my son I could've lived off of Chinese food and skittles. So weird. There honestly wasn't a single food aversion with him. With our daughter I basically only ate chicken. I was soo nauseated with her all day long until 26ish weeks. Spaghetti, lasagna, and tacos were my aversions. My husband had to do their employee meal so I made tacos (before realizing it was an aversion) and I was sooo sick while making the meat. Our house and car smelled like it for weeks. It was so, so awful and I can still occasionally smell it. We now are unable to have tacos again. I'm just all around constantly nauseated again so my gut says it's another girl! My skin was also terrible with our daughter and it is again, so...

I don't really have any yet. It doesn't seem to be selective at all. Random food smells will turn me off but that's about it (I was gagging while cooking trout for dinner last night but it didn't necessarily make me not want to eat it).

With DD I craved hamburgers and red meat during 1st and 2nd tri. In 1st tri with DS, I had an aversion to meat (go figure!) especially chicken, and craved mushrooms and carrots my entire pregnancy.

  • I had a mango today and I'm pretty sure I could live off those the rest of this pregnancy.
Meat sounds gross. So does vegetables. Basically fruit and cheese right now is what sounds good.
  • Forgot to answer the rest, lol. Last pregnancy I couldn't eat lettuce, or avocado. Still can't eat those now  :s
  • Last pregnancy my major aversion was nuts. I still don't care for them. I craved fruit cobbler last time, candy, corn dogs with mustard, popcorn, onion rings, and anything carbonated. I experienced a bit of pica towards the end and I would eat ice all day long.

I feel like im already having cravings this time around. Way earlier. Not to mention I'm hungry every hour or less. I've been trying to be good and snack on fresh fruit and veg, but it just isn't keeping me full.
Past two days I've been thinking about spicy food and salsa.  My mouth was watering in the grocery store looking at the jars of salsa, and my stomach is growling now as I type this!  Even though I just ate a grilled cheese sandwich 10 minutes ago.
Im also craving strong flavors like balsamic vinegar, and I don't think I could get enough garlic.

I've been craving cold milk, sunbutter and jelly sandwiches, and bread and butter pickles (not in the sandwiches).

And my aversion is basically anything that I make for dinner.

  • With my DD I craved blueberries and Taco Bell, I also had an aversion to tomatoes and water. In the 3rd trimester I was over the aversion to tomatoes, but they gave me heartburn in any form. The water aversion went away with the severe morning sickness.

So far I don't really have any aversions, (although I couldn't eat my tomato on my sandwich on Sunday) but I've eaten homemade breakfast burritos everyday for a week.

I wonder if this means another girl?

  • Haven't had any cravings or adversions yet. With my last pregnancy I really didn't have any serious cravings either. I couldn't look at eggs, however.
  • With DD my aversion was spaghetti. I craved apple cinnamon cheerios with her. So far with this one I have craved spicy chicken sandwiches from chick-fil-a! No aversions yet!

All I want to eat/drink is pork skins and root beer. Weirdest thing is that I don't even like pork skins. Anything spicy is my go to at the moment. Also, when I'm not pregnant I drink a healthy amount of beer, DH was drinking one tonight and I thought I was gonna vomit in the kitchen.

With DD, I would leave my house at midnight just to go to Walmart to get cookies. I dont recall any aversions with her. I never had morning sickness with her either. With DS, I was sick as a dog and could hardly stomach anything at all. For about 18 weeks all I ate was saltines and cucumbers. Then I got severely dehydrated and had to go to the ER. After that I didn't have the morning sickness anymore and I ate a lot of dominos pizza and Wendy's.

  • Aversions: coffee, anything too bubbly that is normally caffeinated, anything sugary (it looks good but after one bite... yuck), meat doesn't sound good but I still eat it occasionally, and occasionally smells just get to me and then I'm not hungry.

Cravings: fruit salsa, all the fruits and veggies, salad, pasta, avocados and tzatziki sauce

With DS, I had food aversions to chicken, sweet things, anything spicy and my whole second half of the pregnancy I could stomach even the thought of red sauce. I was so sad for no lasagna, pizza or spaghetti. My cravings would be random and short lived. One day I wanted a fudge sundae from McDonalds, but after I had it, I didn't want anymore. We moved back stateside after three years in my third trimester so I mostly craved all the fast food that I hadn't had for three years. Ha.
  • I'm not having any aversions yet but I'm really starting to crave anything spicy. Right now the Ghost Pepper Chips from Trader Joes are my jam. I hated them at first but now I can't live without them.

  • I could legit live off of bagels and cream cheese! It has to be a fresh bagel and luckily my husband is a teacher and off for the summer so I can send him to the bakery in the mornings. YUMO! As for adversions: any type of dessert or chip, which is sad.

First pregnancy with DD I hated meat. Couldn't even look at it.

  • If you have a Taco Johns within a 30 mile radius, I suggest you check out their new "Lemonades". It's totally just Mist Twist (originally Sierra Mist) with flavoring, but it seriously hit the spot today. I got the Prickly Pear and it was shockingly good after the first few sips. My son got Strawberry and that was also good. They had Watermelon but we didn't try that. If you're needing carbonation, but sick of the usual, might be worth a try!
  • Jerk chicken. I'm a vegetarian. Lol
  • @HappyMonkey817 Im a vegetarian, too! Just had spaghetti and meatballs!

I feel a little queasy if I go overboard but it's been nice.
  • So... I just had toast with butter and honey, and I can't stop thinking about it, I want more
  • Not having any major aversions yet....though smells do get to me.  Today, I'm craving pizza!  I wanted the salt and grease! #terribleformydiet :disappointed:

  • I know this might sound crazy, but I wish I had at least SOME aversions to balance out these cravings! I am craving sweets like crazy. Buuuuut I will say... When and if I finally give in to a bad craving it does not taste as good as I hoped it would. It's always, "meh."

You know what's really annoying?  I will have a craving one day and the next it's an aversion.  I pretty much had the best chikfila sandwich of my life last night and today I can't stomach the idea of eating it again.

  • My cravings are short lived too.  However, I'm at the everything is disgusting phase.  I'm craving fruits, which is good, but any food that has smell, I can barely stomach.
  • @DDRRT1982 OMG! Their grilled chicken club is one of my favorites right now! Sooooo good! Satisfies that salty craving I seem to have most days.

  • Shout outs to the vegetarians! I enjoyed meat last pregnancy but this time, it's enjoyable but comes right back up...Making it just as sucky as always. Might have a vegetarian pregnancy!

    How about you ladies?
  • Yes to all the spicy cravings! I'm all about mexican food and spicy everything. No chicken, though. Just went to Costco and couldn't even buy any chicken!

aaand guess who's headed to taco johns for lunch tomorrow! I've been on a strawberry lemonade kick lately, so that sounds AMAZING. Plus I can't ever say no to potato oles.  :)

Been craving all things potatoes and sour things (I.E. vinegar, sour cream, certain hot sauces). I normally hate potato salad, but it's the number one thing I want. Next is french fries with mayo. Third was the buffalo chicken pizza I begged my Fiance to order.

As for aversions, I can't have sweet things. I've tried animal crackers, apple strudel, cookies, brownies, applesauce, and various other things, and the second I taste them I have to spit it back out. I am a girl who loves her sweets, so it's kinda upsetting.

    ETA: Added another craving.

  • Since my nausea finally let up a little yesterday, I went to the grocery store on my way home and bought an embarrassing amount of snacks since some stuff finally sounded good. Top cravings today-laughing cow cheese and crackers, bread & butter pickles, ham sandwiches on Hawaiian rolls, and salad with thousand island dressing.

  • My only aversion is coffee...that sucks.

  • I'm only 4w3d so no cravings or aversions yet. With DS I craved tea and toasted tomato sandwiches like crazy (both of which I hated). I also craved McFlurries. Other ice cream didn't do the trick, it HAD to be a McFlurry.

I'm hoping I crave fruits and veggies this pregnancy - haha! I normally have an aversion to both during pregnancy and ended up gaining 70lbs with DS and unable to choke down vegetables until like third trimester.
  • @LivingTheDream I hear you on the coffee aversion.

I want pizza all the time but then it's not as great when I eat it. Mostly nothing sounds good other than veggies and fruit.
  • Only four weeks, so no aversions yet. Last time they didn't set in until around 6 weeks so now I'm just loading up on all the delicious healthy things I had an aversion to last time: bell peppers, zucchini, squash, chicken, fruit.

Basically from weeks 6-9 I had an aversion to anything that wasn't tan.  The coffee aversion lasted longer, until about week 15 or so. I'm hoping to have a similar situation this time, but we shall see...

  • @vflux33 You don't need to have denied yourself carbs in order to crave then during the first trimester. I eat plenty of carbs fit being a healthy person with a relatively balanced diet, and my last pregnancy felt like I ate nothing but carbs the entire month of September.
