Re: Moms who go Bump in the night/Randoms

  • My PT did warn against using our bouncer too much saying that it could cause the calf muscles to form differently and result in "toe-walking." You could always talk with a physical therapist to see if it's something to be concerned about. I grew up with a guy that walked on his toes and while he had an usual gait, it didn't cause him any problems (he was an amazing athlete).

Do any of your babies walk on their toes? Ethan couch surfs and uses his push walker really well, but he's almost always "tip toeing". Should I have him in hard sole shoes so he keeps his feet flat?
Was Ethan a preemie by any chance? My goddaughter was a toe- walker and the Dr said it was related to tight calf muscles, which was related to her being a preemie (she was born at 33 weeks). I think she had to do stretching exercises.

This may not be at all relevant for Ethan, I really don't know what I'm talking about and may be passing on useless chit-chat, so I apologize ; )
That's interesting! My daughters were born at 33 weeks, of course thinking back I can't remember if they walked on their toes or not...

No, he wasn't a premie. Born at 39 weeks.
  • LO is not walking, but has only taken one or two steps while holding the furniture. Not anywhere near walking. Sometimes he goes to his tip toes, but other times flat
  • My friends son is a toe walker and it's caused his calf muscles to be weaker. He's 7 now but he had to do PT and wear these shoes that actually ended up not helping. Anyways he can't run as long as other kids his age because of it. Of course I think he's on the extreme end of what can happen but I just want to put that out there. I can't wait till more of the babies are walking! Once they turn 1 can we no longer call them babies? That thought just made me really sad.
  • I'm feeling a bit emotional today and it's only 8am. I don't hunks because of all the birthdays this month and next. My middle boy turns 5 on Sunday and then next month my oldest and Charlotte have their birthdays and it's making me a little sad.

I have heard that putting them in shoes is supposed to help.  A co-worker's daughter was a big time toe walker and their pediatrician recommended keeping hard-soled shoes on her.  It's still early... He may figure it out himself too. Good luck!
  • I drive to the mall to take him to stride rite so they could properly measure his foot and make a recommendation on shoes...only to find out they're closed and gone from the mall. Ugh. Lol. Guess we will just go back to Payless.

We did the same thing and ours was going out of business and they didn't have anything left in Charlotte's size but we found out Striderite makes a line for Target called Surpise. They're basically the same thing but half the price. We found 2 pairs and she started wearing them this week and actually took her first 4 steps tonight without assistance!

My daughters somehow knocked the closet door down, almost on themselves. The amount of destruction two 25lb 3yr olds are capable of is astronomical!!!

Haha! DH was annoyed bc as soon as the baby started crawling, one of the first things she did was pull a door stopper out of the wall (it's an older house), leaving a small dark unpainted circle in the white trim. She goes over to this thing in all of the rooms, and after chasing her away from them for the past month, he finally came to the realization that if a baby can break it, it's cheap and needs to be replaced lol.

Damien's obsessed with doorstops too, he loves to thwack them so that they make that sproing noise. Damien's thing is sticking his fingers into the base board heaters, which I hate because he's cut himself several times already. Other than that, he LOVES to grab our shoes...and then stick them in his mouth. The good news is that it gives me a reason to nag my husband to put his shoes away.

Both of my kids love(d) door stops.  We ended up putting doorstops on random spots along a wall where there is no door just so they can thwak them.  A friend of mine screwed door stops onto a piece of wood as a toy for her son.

Yes, like a busy board! I've been meaning to make a busy board that I can attach to the side of the island in the kitchen to keep Miles occupied but close while we're cooking so that he's not just yelling while careening around the dining room/living room/cat food... the kid just goes wherever

Has anyone flown long distances with LOs before? We're flying from Virginia to California for a wedding next month and I'm trying to figure out what time would be easiest. My dilemma is whether to inconvenience ourselves for the sake of an easy flight with Jackie or the "it's gonna suck no matter what, do what's easy for the adults" mentality. All the flights leave at 6am or not until 5/6 and get in around 2am.

My boss flew to France a lot when her kids were still babies and they always did the overnight ones so that they babies would sleep through most of it. That said, it's still a gamble since Jackie may decide the new environment is too stimulating to sleep.
  • My son never slept well outside his crib, so I always flew during the day if I could because I knew he would cry at night.  Just had lots of things to distract him. I also hate arriving on a trip after having missed a nights sleep. That's just my preference

  • We've taken a few flights with S, one of which was cross country. Even at times I thought he would pass out, he was so wired that he didn't sleep much on the flights. My biggest requirement now is to get a direct flight if at all possible, regardless of time of day. The fewer times in and out of airports, taking off, and landing, the better!

Totally with you on direct flights. I was that way before Damien was born though.
  • We flew in April and the morning flight was easier then the evening flight home. It messed up Charlotte's night time sleep and holding her while she slept was difficult. It might be easier since you'll have your husband, it was just me and the kids. 6 am would be way to early for us since no one here is a morning person and it takes 30 mins to get everyone in the car. I swear someone is always forgetting something or needs to pee or needs a bottle of water.

This is how I left DH and Savannah this morning  :D

Throat kick! This is why I can't bedshare with jackie. That and every little snort and sigh wakes me up.

I say once you are off for the summer pick a week you can really be ok with less sleep and really work with her. Now is a great time to break the habit, the older they get the harder it is. Good luck!

My awesome sleeper just woke up at 6 this morning. He usually sleeps til 8:30 or 9. I just had to throw him in the living room pack and play so I can try and get some sleep. Being awake for the last 50 minutes has been bad because I realized how much I want to stab my husband in the face because he is going to help someone move today. This wouldn't normally bother me but there is a list of like 5 things I really want done and have asked to be done for several weeks and my stuff always takes a backseat to everyone else's. He is pretty helpful but just slow as molasses and when I complained about it to him at 630 am he goes, "sorry, I work 80+ hr work weeks. What do you want me to do about it?" Obviously I want you to not help other people til you do the 5 tasks I have asked you to do. DUH!!!! Sorry! I must be about to start my period or something because I'm spoiling for a fight.
  • Sad.
My husband tried to serenade me with his trumpet on Mother's Day and our LO cried and cried so he had to stop playing :(.

anyone have any experience with penicillin reactions/ allergies? My daughter was prescribed amoxicillin yesterday after a heinous bite on her toe from her sister. She woke up with a light rash on her chest. She is going to the dr this afternoon so we will have an official answer but I was just curious if anyone had any experience?

Damien did okay on amoxicillin a few weeks back but they did say to look out for rashes as a possible allergic reaction. How is her breathing and heart rate? I can't take any sulfa-based antibiotics. I don't know if the reactions would be the same as a penicillin reaction, but it was pretty bad. Unable to focus, super high heart rate, flu felt like it got worse than better, diarrhea, etc. I didn't have breathing trouble though (thankfully). Good luck at the dr!

Thanks! She is doing well right now, I was talking to my SIL who is allergic to penicillin and her reactions are full blown hives. Victoria just has a small rash on her chest that looks mild to my untrained eye so hopefully it's nothing to worry about. The prescription info did say a light rash is common so hopefully that's all it is. Poor girl is so upset that she has to go back again. She went in yesterday because her sister bit her so bad that it completely destroyed her toenail.

Cam has been doing this at 5:30 am recently. My new trick is putting him in his play pen in the kitchen with toys and I go back to bed. He plays happily and everyone else sleeps. For the record my bedroom is next to the kitchen so it's not like we are on different floors or anything.

A light rash is common, more of a side effect than a reaction. Always good to check with the doc though!
