  • @SWE2 I just heard that they can inhale it because people shake it on and that stuff flies everywhere. I know quite a few parents that used corn starch instead with a spoon and liked it better. We have a small bottle that we got, but I would probably pull out my corn starch first because it's less dusty.

Ok what's the deal with baby powder? At our childcare class they said not to use it bc baby could inhale. I figured we would use if needed. Then I saw an article on the bump about it might cause cancer?? So do you use it or not use it? If not what else do you use?
Baby powder isn't a thing people use anymore. I don't even know why people used it in the first place, to prevent diaper rash? Keep it as clean as you can down there and don't let them sit in a dirty diaper too long and you're probably going to be OK. Kid 1 wasn't prone to rashes at all but the few times he did get irritated we would just apply a barrier cream like Desitin after changes and that did the trick.
From what the instructor of our newborn care class said, baby powder was originally used with basic cloth diapers to absorb more liquid. Now we have disposables, and even cloth diapers are more cushy. Plus, we have better products to prevent diaper rash. Baby powder is essentially obsolete now.

We chose not to buy powder because of the risk of them breathing them in. There seems to be no benefit to baby powder to begin with except when youre going to the beach and they have sand all over. The powder supposedly make it easier to clean off the sand!

  • @absbubbs Forget about the article. I clicked on the first "study" and found this totally debunking the research. Also the website it was found on is a group of anti-vexxers who it seems have published/posted articles with misinformed.

Here is the link regarding this study and also that website.

  • We never used powder for diaper rashes either.  I keep some on hand for beach trips or as a dry shampoo alternative.  I think all brands have removed talc from ingredients and moved to corn starch.  I know J&J no longer has talc.

No baby powder for us either, desitin cream is our go to choice for diaper rash.

  • @SWE2 We didn't use baby powered. Never noticed a time where I would have found it useful. Only wipes and diaper at changes and only used cream when a diaper rash started to show.

@NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot Not sure how you haven't completely freaked out. I probably would have taken out my aggression on any and all of the kitchen appliances.

@kns1988 so does that mean you dont get to throw anything away without paying? My town does something similar but we get to put out two bags once each week. Anything over that is $2/bag.
Nope, only recycling is free. I just bought the bags and it's $3.50 a bag, so it can add up quickly. They're at least like large trash bag size.

My family was all about the baby powder when we were kids, but I've just been using desitin on the little inner leg areas that seemed irritated. As far as the cancer thing goes, those were women who were applying baby powder directly to their vaginas kind of like a douching agent for decades. Not something the average baby powder user would have to worry about.

  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot That's more than anyone's share of crap! I hope things settle down. Things always seem to go wrong in my house when DH is away, so I feel the frustration.

Also want to second the Rimadyl for the pups, it works very well for our pup when she slips her knee cap or joint now and then. I believe it's part anti-inflammatory and part pain management? My sister is a certified vet tech so I could ask her to clarify, but it's been great for when we've needed to give it to ours.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Third time mom here--I've never felt a need for baby powder. We did use desitin as a preventative each diaper change though.

Anyone exclusively pumping who has advice for keeping milk production up? We could do some BF, too, if that would help. He's able to latch with the nipple shield, but I don't really bother with breast feeding because we're measuring his caloric intake and I want to make sure he takes everything that's in the bottle. I'm pumping and he's eating every 3 hours, day and night. He eats 70 mL at a time, and I pump anywhere from 50 to 100. I don't know why it's so inconsistent. I set a timer for 15 minutes each time I pump.

  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot Sounds like you have a good vet and a good plan.
@SWE2 No baby powder, as others have said. Change diaper as needed to avoid rash, and if there's a rash, use a barrier cream. The idea behind the powder is keep the skin dry and not have a rash, but if you change the diaper when needed and use a barrier cream if irritation develops, you're good.
@kns1988 FTM so I have no idea, but I've read about supplements/herbs/food you can take to boost production. Fenugreek, brewer's yeast, etc. If you're into that kind of thing I can tell you more, but that's the extent of my knowledge. Good luck!

@kns1988 I second what others have said about milk production. Getting enough calories and sleep (as much as is possible with a newborn!) is also vital. Hands-on pumping (massaging areas that feel fuller to encourage drainage), switching back to the letdown setting (faster, lighter suction) when the flow/spray has slowed, and being consistent (trying to pump as often as your baby eats) are what have helped me a lot.

Not bad at all.  I actually thought it was funny too. And diabolical.  I suspect the kid was using white, brown, black, or grey to color their picture as she's deemed those colors "yucky" and "not real" since they are not "on the rainbow."

  • @mamatowildones Congratulations. What a cute little boy. And all that hair!!! Can't wait to hear the birth story.
  • @kns1988 supplements did not help me. Water food and rest were the best for me. My supply actually went up after I went back to work after 3 months because I was finally eating right. Fenugreek made my supply tank while giving my son horrible gas. Brewers yeast did nothing but give me gas. I tried power pumping it only helped that day never saw a constant uptick. Skin to skin at this stage is very important. I tried cookies and brownies and supplements galore. Right now you need 8 to 12 pumping sessions over 20 mins long to build your supply. You can hand express after pumping or do breast compressions (youtube) to ensure your emptying. You will get the best if you pump sometime between 1 and 4 am consistently. The afternoon your supply will dip. When I was pumping I would get 22 oz by 1030 am then another 14 to 16 over the rest of the day. My daily average used to be 34 to 38 oz. I don't remember when it got up to that much in beginning. Maybe after first month I think. Right now your just building supply so emptying is the most important thing. Get the milk out so body thinks it needs to make more

@kns1988 I think you can get mother's milk tea at your grocery store. I've even seen it at Wal-Mart. I know some moms that swear by blue Powerade and beer to boost supply.  You could also try lactation cookies. I contribute a lot of my success from DS to staying hydrated and daily oatmeal with 2 TS flax seed and 1 TS wheat germ. It actually tastes good if you add a few walnuts/pecans, chocolate chips and fresh blueberries.
  • @kns1988 I've seen the mothers milk tea and other lactation-y snacks at Babies R Us and our local grocery stores.

@kns1988 4 oz! So impressive! I get excited when I pump over one oz! Hopefully I can be like you one day.

Guys, pumping is hard. I'm doing everything possible and still struggling to let down for the pump on my right breast some times. Going to start fenugreek tomorrow. Hand expression seems to be key for really emptying - sometimes I can get half an oz from hand expressing alone.

Keep the tips coming, the more the merrier when it comes to BF!

ETA: what is power pumping? Pumping more frequently?
  • @chailife34 FTM here so basically clueless but I have found that there are A TON of breastfeeding tips on Pinterest if you have an account or are on there. Surely some of them are inaccurate but if you find some that are mentioned multiple places I would give it a shot! I was literally just reading about power pumping. It's: pump 20 min. Rest 10. Pump 10 min. Rest 10. Pump 10 min. Be done.
  • Interesting. Does it actually work? Started fenugreek today. Apparently it makes you smell like maple syrup. I'll report back with results :-P
