Re: POTD: Vaccinations

  • @clanbuchanan15 so you won't be vaccinating your children?

  • @ac1259 Lurking from August, but just wanted to share my experience in case it helps.  I had a bad reaction to the pertussis part of the DPT as an infant (104.5 fever for several days among other things) and never got the pertussis part of the booster after that.  The Tdap vaccine is a different formulation or version (I can't remember the correct term) than the vaccine when we were kids.  Due to my history as a child, I was nervous about getting the Tdap while pregnant with DS2 so I waited until after he was born.  I discussed it with both my OB and PCP who both thought it would be okay to get the vaccine because it was different now.  I had no reaction at all to the vaccine except for a sore arm, which is common.  You could always get a second opinion if you want to encourage him to get vaccinated.

  • @MetsGirl18 Thank you for this!  My DH had a similar reaction as a baby and we were nervous about him getting the booster.  Glad to know it's a different formulation now.

  • Also someone said something about "messing up and getting HPV" and I don't think any harm was meant in it but yeah.. I didn't mess up and get it.. I didn't make a mistake.. 85% of people get it in their life time lol.
I believe that was me. I meant no offense by that! There are certainly people who get it by no fault of their own. What I was trying to say was, even if my child DID do something (aka, have unprotected sex) to get it, I would still want them protected. I want my child protected from everything that can be protected against. That way if they are exposed for any reason (bad choices or good choices or just happenstance) they don't have to go through that. I definitely see your point and should have made my point more clear.
  • @jessirh I figured that's what you meant (honestly don't even know if it was you and I'm too lazy to go back and look). I wasn't offended! Just wanted to say that it's so common and that so many people get it that it's pretty hard to avoid, no matter if you make good or bad decisions lol. I mean I think we all hope our children don't have sex until they are married, but even then they could still get it.

Also, I didn't say in my original post. I am obviously vaccinating my kids.
  • I have to laugh at the original post that says we're an nonjudgmental group here....that was said tongue in cheek, right?

    Whoa there. That's all.
  • @MetsGirl18 I might have to try that! My PCP mentioned that they changed the formulation in 1990 or something and there were common problems with it before then but that she didn't want to risk it. Definitely makes me nervous though with preemie babies at home but thankfully it hasn't been an issue yet and I've always gotten my Tdap during the 3rd trimester so hopefully baby will be somewhat protected.

So on the HPV thing - when it was released into the USA, I had already graduated from college at that point (if what I'm reading is correct, it became available here in 2006). My family has *knock on wood* no history of cancer and I had already been with (and realized it was a forever thing) with DH for 3 years. Even so, we used protection until we were married. Since it was so new in the US, I wasn't sold on it yet. Me not getting the vaccine didn't affect anyone else's immunity (hence my stance on I am 100% vaccinating my children). Also, I had already been on a medication in high school that had some really serious side effects (Accutane) and a ton of research hadn't been done at that time on what could happen to a female trying to conceive 10-20 years after taking it even though major complications were highly possible if you got pregnant while taking it.

In short, I'm not saying I won't vaccinate DD for HPV, but I'm not saying I will either. I think I have another 10 years before we will have to make that call and I am wanting to read the additional research they'll develop during that time period.

*ETA correct HVP to HPV. Brain fart*

  • Hey @natleilynn I was on accutane in hs, too. Definitely some scary possible side effects but I would do it all over again x 400000. Miracle drug.

  • @bluejeanbabi05 oh I would, too - hands down. But they made me watch a video showing the possible birth defects and sign a contract saying I wouldn't get pregnant - it was terrifying and I swear that drug seriously messed with my head.

Still. Would do it again. I've barely had to deal with any skin issues since then. It was a life changer.

  • @natleilynn yep! And I was a freshman and hadn't even kissed a boy yet, lol (sad)

  • @bluejeanbabi05 I was 16 before I had my first kiss, no shame from me

I like to think I was particular. haha. I did not want to have just ANY first kiss. I did not want to re-tell that story for the rest of my life and hang my head in shame. haha. Luckily, I have fond memories of that boy and we still keep in touch. I'm the one that got away for him, which is a nice touch to the story (for me anyway haha).

  • Yes to vaccines. I know that there are situations where there have been negative outcomes of vaccines but for me I feel like my child and the rest of society is still safer getting vaccinated from diseases that have been deadly in the past. No offence to anybody who doesn't vaccinate. I can see your reasoning as well and it was quite a difficult decision for my husband and I to make actually.
  • @myelhsa I was feeling bad because you were getting slammed but I guess no need to worry.....

@jessafishy I guess so. I was just surprised how nasty people seemed to be getting but I've been off facebook for awhile so I kind of forget how mean online "discussions" can get.

HPV -- fully 100% support it. As a teenager my mother did not want me to get it, saying it was for if you were sexually active. I researched it and decided I wanted it and she let me get it. The point is to get yourself protected BEFORE you have sex. If I have a boy, I will also vaccinate against HPV to help prevent the spread. The HPV vaccine has been updated to include a few more strains now.

I will say, for whatever reason, I felt very faint after my second dose of it (there are three) and had to lay down for a bit. I have never had that reaction to a vaccine before. Totally worth the reduced cancer risk though.

Flu -- I get the flu shot, not only for myself, but because older people literally die from the flu. I have no desire to send someone to the hospital if I can prevent it. Is it 100%? No, but they make their best guess and it at least seems to reduce the severity of the flu.

FYI -- the stomach flu is NOT the flu, despite the name. If you get the stomach flu despite the vaccine, the two have nothing to do with eachother. I think this misunderstanding makes people think it did not work for them.

I love vaccines. I think they are the coolest thing. You are just exposing yourself to a virus (weakened or dead) and letting your body figure out how to fight it. It sounds completely natural to me.

  • I'm tardy to the party.

We vaccinate and will continue to vaccinate. I want to know I've done what I can to protect my child and to protect those that aren't able to be vaccinated (due to young age or diseases with weakened immune systems).

I also belive in the flu shot. I get it every year for work as its required and would get it regardless. I see what happens to those who don't get it, and most of the time it's younger adults in their 40-50's who are fighting for their lives.
  • Whew I was afraid to read this thread bc it gets me all fired up but very pleasantly surprised that almost everyone is pro vax!! I will most definitely be vaccinating
