Re: GD Support Thread

  • Add me to the failing the 1-hour club. :( I failed it last time, too, but passed the 3-hour, so I am hoping that's the case this time. I am having a little pity party about having to do that damn 3-hour test but I am going to remain hopeful that I don't have GD.It's encouraging to read this thread and see how many pass the 3-hour.

I just read through all 9 pages of this thread and it's really crazy how many different things we are told. My Dr's threshold is 139 and I failed with a 147. It doesn't make any sense to me that this # would differ from Dr to Dr. I was told I have to eat a special diet for the 3 days leading up to it (I don't think I saw anyone say that) and that I can eat until bed time the night before (seems like most are told fasting must be 12 hours).

@lmudra  I am the same way... numbers after meals are always great, my fasting is nuts.

This morning my fasting was 134.  But I wonder if stress can make it spike?  Because I am under an incredible amount of stress right now.

I hear stress can mess up numbers. Hope you are able to find a way to reduce it but I know dealing with all this isn't helpful.

My numbers after meals are decent but my fasting keeps climbing... I will likely start medication Friday if it doesn't turn around. The protein bar didn't work either.

Stress makes mine spike for sure. I think Stress is the source of my bad number days.

  • @awoodruff27, I often bring a babybell cheese or mozzarella cheese stick with an apple or pair it with something like that. It seems to get me through. Fiber One bars have worked in a pinch too. Pairing cheese or nuts with a fruit or small carb seem to balance things out for me, but everyone is different!

  • @awoodruff27 i snack on an apple, mandarin oranges in the cup, unsweetened applesauce for my morning snacks and then in the afternoon i add some sort of cheese and crackers, lately i have a wedge of laughing cow and 4-6 ritz/saltines along with another fruit option, i also do lite yogurt, hoodsie cup (i think its a new england thing ;) ) string cheese, cottage cheese.  for lunch i have been getting away with a fruit/veggie pouch...you know the kids stuff that's like applesauce, the one i have been having is apple/mango/carrots and its delicious.

  • I love the Sargento snack packs with nuts, cheese and dried fruit.  Costco has them in bulk so I stock up nearly ever trip.  I was having ok luck with Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt bars for a nighttime snack but lately my fasting numbers have been bouncing.  My anal retentive side has been averaging my fasting numbers over the week and last week average was 94.5.  Alas, today was 103 so I fear meds are in my future too.
  • I'm not doing the snacks anymore unless I'm actually hungry, then I do cheese and crackers or apple with peanut butter.  I'm also not following the '3-4 carb choices' for lunch and dinner anymore and the dr is fine with that.  So basically I'm going low carb for big meals which is keeping my numbers low after meals.  Morning numbers are another story lol.
  • @rmarble23, @LAMCH1980 thanks so much for the ideas! I appreciate it!

@JAGinMI I would have passed the 1 hr by your Drs numbers. My friend also had to do the 3 day diet, but I didn't.

  • So it's back to the HIGH morning blood sugars.... 1 day this entire week (since my last endo appointment last week) I had a fasting number in range.  I am sure they are going to increase my insulin YET AGAIN.... I am already at 60 units.  Ughhhhhh... How many weeks do we have left?!?!

  • I'll be picking up my meter after work. Any tips or tricks I should know about? This is the first time I've ever had to check my blood sugar. I bought some new shoes last night because my feet are so swollen and my dr's strongly suggested getting shoes with more structure/support to wear during the day. I feel like I look dumb with the shoes on but I'm trying to take one for the team.
  • I know everyone is different, but wanted to share that I've been struggling with fasting numbers recently and have had two straight days in the mid 80s!!!  The change?  Two heaping tablespoons of peanut butter before bed.  I'm going to keep this up to see if it sticks, but so far so good!
  • @mezalune I had peanut M&Ms the night before my good fasting blood sugar... I tried it again last night thinking I was on to something, and it was 134. :(

  • I had a BUNCH of safe to eat raw cookie dough last night and my morning number was 97.  Haha! I give up y'all!!!  Lowest # it's ever been in the AM and trust me, I ate WAY of plan for my nighttime snack.
  • @lmudra I hear ya girl!  Same here!

    BabyFruit Ticker
  • It's seriously a crap shoot for me right now. I ate a dinner that I normally eat (and get a good number) and was within carb range and my postprandial was 136. I still ate my bedtime snack like usual and my fasting was 99, one of my lowest this pregnancy. WTH body?
  • I told my endocrinologist last appointment that I now think endocrinology is a pseudo science because it makes absolutely no sense to me!
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @beckij34 I watched a good YouTube video on actually testing my blood sugar and it was helpful because I had issues and had to mail order all my supplies for insurance to pay so I missed my nurse appointment and didn't want to wait to start testing. I guess my only advice is to check with your insurance company because the pharmacy wanted like $100 for all my supplies and when I called my insurance company everything was free if I did mail order.

It gets easier and doesn't hurt like I thought it would.
  • So my doc referred me to a specialst for my GD... my appt is tomorrow morning at 800 am. The billing department called me today at 230 in the afternoon to tell me I would have to pay $900 out of pocket for the appointment!!!  Did y'all have to pay out of pocket for your GD appointment?!?! I have United insurance and plan on calling them first thing in the morning (because it should all be covered) but I cancelled this appointment. I should also say I'm an RN and refuse to pay that kind of money for someone to tell me how many carbs to eat for each meal/snack and how to check my blood sugars when I already know how to... sorry, crazy angry pregnant lady rant!

Anyone else's doc let them self monitor their blood sugars without going to a specialist appointment?
  • @panzyo3, yeah, no. I'd never pay that. I didn't have to pay OOP.  I skipped the appointment with the dietician with my last and this pregnancy, but I went with my first, but it was a total waste. They didn't even show me how to check my sugar, they just showed me what I should and shouldn't eat.

I hope you get it worked out.
  • I'm pissed I owe $152 towards my deductible for my hour long waste of time GD education meeting.  I can't imagine $900!!!
  • @panzyo3 I didn't have to pay oop for my appointment. $900 is nuts!!!!

@tmrussell my supplies only cost me $17.80 with insurance. I need to go through everything tonight so I can start this crazy ride tomorrow. I know it's not going to be easy at first but I want us as healthy as possible.

My dietitian said women with GD are typically induced which sucks because I was hoping to go into labor on my own as long as he's turned by then (currently he's footling breech). As long as he gets here safe and sound that's all that really matters in the grand scheme of things.
  • @panzyo3 o heck no would I pay $900! That's crazy!

I had my appointment yesterday and it was a waste. The lady who taught us what to eat was a little... Weird. Like if she would have just given me the packet I would have been happy. But so far so good with my numbers.

But I do have a stupid question. You test 2 hrs after meals. Is it 2 hrs from the start of the meal or 2 hours after you are done?

I test one hour after my first bite, as directed by my OB.  If I miss the one hour, I'll test at 2.
  • @awoodruff27, I test 2 hours after I start eating.
  • I test 1 hour after unless I miss like mezalune said above.

  • I test two hours after the first bite.

  • Okay I have been doing 2 hours after first bite but I wanted to make sure. And so weird that testing time is different. Is there a reason why some drs say to do one hour after while others say two?

Mom to Madison- 5 and Lillian 2....and now surprise baby #3!
  • I have the option to do either, I just choose to do 2 hours.
  • Oh wow! I have been doing my testing according to the last bite and not first. I'm so glad you asked this question because I have been doing it wrong all along!
  • Do any of y'all use the Freestyle Neo glucose monitor? If you do where do you get the control solution? My first 1 hr sugar was 80 (seems low after 2 slices of pizza and a salad) and my 2 hr was 98 (probably more accurate).
  • i test 2 hrs after i am finished, some nights it takes me a good 30-40 min to eat all my food as i tend to do the carbs/protein first then i make my veggie and whatever else i am low on for the meal

  • @Stankonia2014, hooray!
@rmarble23, I'm a super slow eater, but the nutritionist and both docs told me to time it from the first bite.

  • @rmarble23 I'm a slow eater too. Usually takes me at least 20-30 min to eat. Plus I have to stop constantly because a child needs more of something.

@Stankonia2014 yay for the awesome fasting number!!

Mom to Madison- 5 and Lillian 2....and now surprise baby #3!
  • @panzyo3 I just met with the nurse but I started checking my sugars before I met with her the first time. I don't see a specialist or anything.

Anyone else on Glyburide? I started it yesterday it's a pill to try to get my fasting number down, which worked this morning but I felt like crap after taking it. I haven't read great things about takings pills while pregnant however my numbers aren't high enough to prescribe insulin I don't believe.
  • Yeah, I just decided to decline the GD specialist appointment and went out and bought a meter myself and started checking last night, while following a GD diet. We'll see what my doctor says at my appt on Monday. My numbers have been fine so far (my 1 hr post meals last night and for lunch were actually in the 80s) , but then again I only failed by 1 stinking point...Hope you other ladies get some better luck with keeping your numbers down!
  • Did anyone else blow it this weekend with the holiday? I was watching, but not as closely and every number was high.
