I'm late to this game, but want to bitch about one of my direct reports. His wife is pregnant, due in August and he just officially told me a few weeks ago. He is going to all doctors appointments with her, which is fine. I ask him to put them on my calendar, so suddenly a whole string of 30 minute appointments start popping up on my calendar. His first one was yesterday, booked from 1:00-1:30. I KNEW he'd be longer than 30 minutes, but figured he would learn his lesson quickly and adjust the calendar invites. So, he leaves as 1...and just DOESN'T COME BACK. He's salaried, so it's not like his hourly pay is getting docked, and I try to be a really flexible, non-hour counting boss, but COME ON. I am the type that scheduled every one of my doctors appointments for either the 8:00 am slot so that I could make it into work by 9:00 or the lunch time slot so that it doesn't really interfere. I get that appointments are at the mercy of the doctor's schedule, but I'm not ok with taking a half day without notification for what I know was likely just a "how's it going?" monthly check up. I'm reserving my anger in case he comes in and tells me something went horribly wrong because then I would feel like a terrible person.
I agree kipperoo. Hopefully everything is fine with them and if it is maybe you could talk to him about it? I go to the doctor only in the last appointment of the day. It's 4pm at my doctor. I go to great lengths to do this so I don't put out my partners. The same is true for the ladies whose work with/for us. There are two other pregnant people in our department and we start too early to do the first appointment of the day but we all try really hard not to put out our fellow workers. Hopefully he will be able to get his wife's appointments first, at lunch, or last so he doesn't miss as much work.
Of course...he's in this morning and acting like everything was fine. Before he even got in, I sent an email basically saying that in my absence, he needs to send the calendar invites to my boss, they need to reflect the time he anticipates being out of the office, and if they are longer than 2 hours, he needs to let our HR calendar know as well. The guy has been working in a professional capacity for 10+ years, so you'd think this wouldn't need to be spelled out. UGH. 9 days left of this work non-sense...
@Kipperoo This was the complete opposite of helicopter parenting. The dad was easily 50 yards or more away. And I think he did it because he knew DH was there watching DD, which is weird and creepy. Who ditches your kids with a random male stranger without saying anything? Not that saying anything would help.
Your worker sounds like he's taking advantage of you. Who sets appts in the middle of the day? Although I suppose the post-lunch 1pm appts are rarely late.
@Kipperoo I think your email was the perfect response, especially if he didn't come in with something like "i'm so sorry, the appt ran late, i got a flat, I should have text/emailed/called"... who does that, just take off the whole afternoon without any explanation!
I can't afford this Army life y'all. Command is going to be so expensive. Blahhh. DH just informed me he has to buy his guide on, it's $150. This isn't even an expense I thought of. So heads up @WombThereItIs@hp_momma@clebl24 (your DH is in CCC too right?). FX we get away with $400 in catering expenses for Change of Command!
That's so odd, because the Guidon belongs to the company and doesn't leave with the outgoing CO, therefore a new one shouldn't need to be paid for. I never in my 8 years in the Army (and I was both company and brigade Guidon Bearer) saw a Guidon be taken.

@RedInLove I was thinking same thing. I was with my unit for 12 years never saw a guidon changed. I do feel especially in the reserves the officers were at a huge disadvantage monetarily.
@hp_momma maybe after his school it will get better because I swear 90% of the time I have no idea what you guys are talking about with command and whatnot. I think the more clinical MOS get a bit of a break? Even after the promotion this week and upcoming PCS it still won't be a command position, hooray. We live by lots of non medical folks and they always seem surprised how little hooah nonsense is on our lives, hopefully you catch a break soon!
Ugh that is what I'm hoping for! If he does get PA then he won't take command so while he's slightly disappointed (for some reason he does love the Hooah crap a little) it's a relief too knowing that he doesn't have to do that. His "slight" medical position now is already like the black sheep in his unit! Unless he's dealing with the providers or medics, no one else every understands his job! Speaking of PA school, no news is good news in the military right?! He submitted his packet but the board doesn't meet until June/July. One of his friends also submitted his packet and he's already been contacted that he doesn't meet the minimum requirements. So we are hoping since DH hasn't been contacted that it means he made it past the first hurdle and now we just wait for the board...

You do realize that much of your audience is dealing with preterm labor and/or birth, risky complications, or very scary conditions, right? Maybe next time you decide to post your woes on the internet, you consider your audience and whether or not your need to vent and then refuse to accept the advice provided is really that important. Seriously, this community is a place for support and bitching, but when you constantly post your "woe is me" stories, deny that there is anything worth looking into, and then shrug off any offers of support, people stop caring. I wish you well in your pregnancy, but get that undiagnosed GD checked out.
@Yiggle09@RedInLove that's so interesting! It just shows how different the Army can be. Every unit we have been with the outgoing commander has been gifted the guidon. Basically in our case we are having to buy his own gift. Dumb.

They never actually referred to mine as even a partial previa, just that it was moving. They seemed not worried so I hadn't given it any other thought until now.

This is what I don't get. You mentioned you have a history of GD but your doctor seems to brush that off, at least based on how you have talked about it in the GD thread. I tried to ask questions before but never got answers so I have no idea what testings you've done. You say you can't make your OB do anything but you can definitely advocate for yourself and LO.

Also, having a history of GD and then acting like it's no big deal leaves some people confused. You complain about everything on the one hand but then you blow off a real, serious issue. @bacorrea It's so annoying the amount of random crap that comes up to buy and always at the last minute so your not prepared! This is my little bitch fest in regards to it... the lack of uniform allowance for officers! I mean I *know* the pay in general is more but seriously I swear we pay WAY more for uniforms/patches/accessories now than when he was enlisted!
@hp_momma I know. I try not to complain to my friends that have spouses on the enlisted side, but seriously all the stuff officers are required to do takes up all that "extra" pay. DH had a dining in and then some kind of formal next month. Plus all the hail and farewells and the money for gifts and Ocall. I'm just like ahhhhh sometimes. We have a lot of debt. This was a second job for DH so the Army paid for his undergrad debt but we both have master degrees and I have my undergrad. Now with two kids, I am a bit concerned about the cost of Command.
I totally understand and we are right there with you. Hopefully with the lower cost of living in El Paso you can breathe a little easier! I about had a heart attack when I got back to WA this week and saw gas at almost $2.90. It was only 2.10 back home in Arizona!

I'm just here to call out that may is basically a mean girls community? This place is about as glitter, unicorns, flowers, fairies, and rainbows as you can get. I've never seen a board on the bump this tame, polite, or nice. (ETA. I mean that as a compliment to all the ladies here) It's pretty rude to go and give an inaccurate depiction on FB where the women can't even defend themselves

Thanks everyone. Here's a quick update since the drama seems to have calmed down.. I'm still in the hospital but praying I can go home soon. Things seem to be pretty stable, the baby's heart rate is great and I haven't had any additional bleeding. They are very precautious though and don't want me moving around more than going to the bathroom or the window seat. The current, ever changing, plan is that I can go home soon on bed rest, have weekly visits with the high risk doctors, and the goal is csection at 36-38 weeks. If I bleed again, I'll be stuck at the hospital until early csection, probably at 34 weeks. Currently at 32w6d. Insane to think I am going to meet my precious LO so soon. I thought I had more time! Nothing is really prepped at home (we own everything from DD but it needs to be taken out of storage, washed, and set up), because I thought I could wait until next week when maternity leave started but guess again! It'll be fine, we'll make it, though I do feel guilty about all the added responsibility my DW has now, but she's handling it well, all things considered. I'm really just relieved to make it through another day that the baby can keep cooking! Stay in, baby! Mama wants to protect you and let you grow!

They are very precautious though and don't want me moving around more than going to the bathroom or the window seat.
