Potty Training

At a loss..

I'm sure this has been asked a billion times on here but... anyone have tips on potty training a 2 yr old little guy? I'm not stressing about it too much yet, I just know I'd like to get him going on it hopefully before baby 2 arrives in December. We have the potty, and he knows what it is and what it is for..and SITS on it..but has no interest in trying to *go* in it. I haven't been pushing him about it at all yet but let him in the bathroom with me when I need to go myself. He still doesn't really seem to be aware when he's peeing (he'll go in the bath and not even notice unless I point it out..then he sticks his hand in it LOL ew...) and pooping he definitely has a schedule but usually asks for "potty" after hes' done the deed.

  • My DS is 23 months and we started PT about a month ago.  I went cold turkey and just let him be naked around the house.  He quickly learned when he was peeing and I would catch him in the act and put him on his potty.  I would then reinforce him heavily for getting pee in the potty.  After the first few days, he totally understood what was going on.  Now we are working on telling me and we are working on pooping in the potty.

  • Do you have hardwood floors? I don't know about letting him "roam free" on our carpets hahaha. I was thinking doing similar, but getting him some cute underwear so at least there's a little bit of a catch before it hits the floor ....

  • haha, yes we have laminate floors.  We have a rug, but I took it out before I started.  It is definitely easier without carpet.

Gerber has training pants that are like underwear, just a little thicker for less mess. You can find them at Babies R Us and some Targets.

I agree with PP as well. We also did treats which seemed to help our boy a lot more. He would get a piece of fruit (he loves fruit)  if he sat and tried to go on the potty and a gummy bear if he peed at all in the potty. He even started going and sitting on his own a little bit without me telling him to.

When I did this, I made sure I had LOTS to do in the kitchen that day and put the potty in the kitchen, baking, cleaning whatever, just to keep on the linoleum.
