Baby medical care and ailments

Re: Baby medical care and ailments

  • @StayingFocused why did they give him something to treat the ear infections? My ped just told me they no longer give antibiotics to treat ear infections? How's your little man feeling?
  • They definitely still give antibiotics if necessary.  They will try oral first, then injections if orals don't clear it up, then you talk about whether or not they need tubes.
I think he is a lot happier and he is more interested in food.  I do also think he still has some fluid left that may or may not have some infection.  If the fluid doesn't go away he is a candidate for tubes for sure so hoping they say no fluid at the follow up.

That doesn't sound fun, I hope he doesn't need tubes.
  • Had a recheck today and no infection!  He does still have a small amount of fluid behind one ear but it is clear.  We have a consult set up with ENT in a couple weeks but fingers crossed this was it for a while.
  • Jackie woke up with a 101 degree fever this morning, so no day care today. No other symptoms and she seems in good spirits, so I think it's teething related. I'm sure napping only 1.5hrs all week at daycare didn't help.

Savannah vomited at daycare yesterday so she can't go today. I think it was a combination of last of sleep and post nasal drip because it hasn't happened again.

I must admit that I'm happy to be home with her and not at work today though.

Yeah, I haven't started work yet, so we've been sending her to get her acclimated and so I can do house projects and I've missed her.

I bet! Those first few days away are so tough- it's smart to do it a little bit before you start work though. I was useless on my first day of work!

It wasn't planned that way, but now that she's started I'm glad it ended up being this way. I just hope I can start work before I run out of things to do around the house.

Poop question.  If baby poo looks like guacamole, what are the red bits?  Not blood...It's not mucous or stringy.  It would be like shavings I'd tomato or carrot....But he hasn't had those things.  A pic could be made if needed.

  • There are two pieces kind of top middle.  It's hasn't been every poop but it's not uncommon.   His appetite is down the last couple days.  I think he picked up a little stomach bug so we are trying to push fluids to prevent an ER visit for dehydration.

  • What do you typically feed him? Purees or finger foods? I notice something similar with Jackie, but I think it just takes a couple days for some things to pass and I'll see a tomato or part of a strawberry a few days after she's had them.

  • Looks like a pretty mucus filled/runny poop if he's eating multiple solid food meals a day.  Prestons will get that that when he's in full blown teething/cold mode cause swallows a lot more spit.  As for the red bits, looks like something he ate rather than blood.  Give more apples and bananas and see if that helps plus keep up with the extra fluids.
  • George has nappies like that when teeth are coming through. I agree the red bits look like food rather than blood
  • Warning-- Long
So, we went to pediatric urgent care today to see about his level of dehydration (keep doing what you're doing vs ER for IV fluids).  He was well enough that she saw him there instead of sending him on to ER.  He's only had about 1/3-1/2 of his normal fluid intake daily since Friday, and no "pee only" diapers since around 5pm yesterday, and that was a small pee.  He has continued to have diarrhea, which now has moved to yellow in color. So, doc checked him out....Freaking bilateral ear infection again!!!!  SO, she sent us with a different antibiotic and tips on pushing fluids.
I asked but didn't get a definitive answer so I still need to know, does a diarrhea diaper count as a wet diaper??  My reason for asking is if he has liquid yellow diarrhea, there is no way to know if there is some pee too.  If I have to assume no, and only count pee diapers as per but no diarrhea, then he still hasn't had one.  So I guess I'm looking at a trip to ER in the morning if the same continues.  He is still in good spirits-laughing and playing, has been mostly fever free, and can still make tears.  Just gave his first dose of new antibiotic (only once a day for 5 days this time).  So I'll make my decision based on how the night and tomorrow morning go.
We already have consult set up with ENT next week and I'm certain he will have to get tubes.
I'm missing yet another day at work tomorrow.  Thank God they are understanding.
I know there are worse problems, but I'm so over this! I feel like such a bad mom.

You are certainly are not a bad mom.  I'm glad you went with your gut and got him checked out.  I do that count diarrhea as a wet diaper because it fluid that is not being absorbed by the body where as urine is.  Infections can make then dehydrated cause they lose their appitite so you gotta make drinking very enticing.  The fact that he has tears is good, I would suggest giving foods that bind the poop so that it will help the diarrhea bit also help distinguish between the pee.  Follow the same diet they give then for stomach bugs. B.R.A.T.  bananas, rice, apples, toast and lots of fluids.  I find that bananas are the best at making solids poops as well as rice cereal added to purées.  Keep us posted.
  • You are definitely not a bad mom. In fact, I think just the opposite for going with your gut and getting him seen. And it turned out to be something!

  • Poor little guy! I hope it clears up soon. Don't feel bad, you have done everything you can in your end. You are doing a great job! I would have done the same. So glad you got him checked out, sending good vibes!!
  • I hope he gets better soon and I agree you are not a bad mom. Charlotte had the flu and I had a really hard time getting her to drink fluids. We got some pedialyte and mixed it with apple juice. My ped recommended it to try, I've never given any of my kids juice before 1 but I was desperate. I think it helped that she had something new, go with your gut and I hope this is all over soon!
  • That diaper is the exact kind I saw with my LO at 2 months old. Except he was going like 4-5 times a day and colicky. The GI specialist said it was his stomach inflammation due to milk allergy. He was put on soy and now he's always constipated.

UPDATE!  Went to pediatrician today bc I just needed more peace of mind whether or not he needed IV fluids.  So glad I went.  Just like they told me last week, his ears are NOT infected.  She actually called the urgent Care doc crazy.  One ear has small amount of clear fluid, just like last week and the other ear is still completely dry.  So, that's good news along with being able to stop the antibiotics, which will help with the diarrhea.  Since his stool is just water now, they put a urine bag on him and said if the bag was still empty by 9pm, go to ER.  If there was pee at all, keep pushing fluids.  She said I could dilute Gatorade and use that too so I'm doing that instead of Pedialyte with a lot less fight.  The only times he has spit up is when I've pushed the Pedialyte, and it was a huge war bc he hated it.   Anyway, to channel my inner Dory...Just keep drinking, just keep drinking...

Glad that it's not another ear infection! Hopefully he pees a bunch for you!
  • Hoping for lots of pee! All my kids have loved pedialyte, I've tasted it and it's gross so I get why your LO doesn't like it.
  • Ethan has been coughing on and off all night. I am hoping he's not catching whatever coodies I have had for the last 4 days!  I don't think there is anything I can give him besides Tylenol (if he gets a fever) and chest rub to suppress his cough right???  I'll call the Kaiser nurse line to ask.

Let me know what they say. Jackie caught the crud DH came home with the other week and what was a dry cough has started to sound congested and phlegmy. I've been doing a baby chest rub and humidifier.

The nurse line asked a few questions: is he wheezing?  is he still eating/drinking? Does he have a fever? Does he have a runny nose? Has he been peeing and pooping as usual?

Ethan has a runny nose along with the cough. The nurse said since he's not presenting other symptoms it's most likely a cold that just needs to run its course.  As a precaution we made an appointment so we go in about 1.5 hours.  I'll post another update if I get more information or remedies!

Sounds like the same thing we have. She had a cold a week ago and now just has a runny nose and cough.

  • Our pediatrician recommended zarbees cough syrup + mucus.  Used it during his last cold and today cause he woke up with a yucky cough.  It really works wonders!!!!
  • Appointment confirmed he has a cold, but his lungs and ears are clear (that was my
main concern). He recommended using the humidifier and giving Tylenol/Ibuprofen as needed for fussiness. Essentially we just wait it out. He said if his symptoms get worse or he gets a fever of 102 to bring him back in.

@adiaz132003 -- that's interesting because my pediatrician said no cold medicine, only Tylenol/Ibuprofen.
  • I can't tell if the humidifier really doesn't much for Jackie, but elevating one side of her crib helps sometimes.

It's really just agave syrup. It's all natural and not technically a cold medicine.  My ped like to try holistic remedies first.  Luckily it works for us.

When I picked Damien up from daycare yesterday he was super snotty (clear). As the afternoon progressed he became really fussy and wanted to cuddle a lot, that's when I noticed he was burning up. He had a fever of 101 and I gave him Tylenol in hopes that it would come down. He didn't drink much formula but I was able to get him to sip on some water periodically. Last night sucked for both of us since he woke every 1-3hrs needing his nose cleared and wanting cuddles. He drank more during the night, which was good. Today is my husband's bday and he took the day off sooooo I left Damien with him. He still had a low fever as of this morning so we'll keep monitoring it and making sure he drinks and rests today. I had a feeling he would get sick his 1st week at daycare.

Update: It's 4:05pm and Damien has yet to go down for a nap. He just cries and cries. We may try elevating a side of the crib but with how much he moves during the night, I don't know how helpful that will be. While at Babies-R-Us yesterday I contemplated getting a humidifier for him but decided not to in the end. I should have gone with my gut. Might pick one up tomorrow if tonight doesn't go well.

Sorry to hear he's not feeling well! S started day care in January and he's had almost constant runny noses since then, but they do seem to get used to it and not be so bothered. The humidifier has been a lifesaver for us all winter.

That's good to know! I'll keep that in mind if his runny nose is persistent. I ended up getting a humidifier that same day rather than wait. He slept great and even STTN. His morning at daycare didn't go well but he was great all afternoon and did really well with our new babysitter this evening. We're using Vicks Baby Rub on him too and that seems to help.

Fair enough, maybe Damien will be that way too. Last night was rough. After waking at 8:30pm with the babysitter and refusing to go down again, we got him down at 10:30. He woke up at 1:30am and I soent 1.5hrs clearing his nose and trying to help him back to sleep. He eventually did but woke 30min later. He basically couldn't sleep unless I was holding him. He was also running a fever again. I ended up with him on my chest in our recliner. I hardly slept but he did until 6:30 and then I put him back in the crib. He's been sleeping ever since. I think I provided just enough elevation to help soothe him, which was why he slept so well on me....plus I'm sure it was a comfort thing too.
  • Do you have the nose freida @vintagevix2016? We love ours! You could also try a wedge under the crib, or roll up a towel and put it u set the mattress to elevate his head a little

Poor guy. I second the nose freida. It seems gross, but it works soooo much better than the bulbs and so far I haven't sucked nearly enough snot for it to get all the way to the tube.

We have the nose freda and are using it frequently. He's just producing a ton of snot I guess. We thought about elevating the crib but he moves so much during the night that I wasn't sure how successful it would be.

Update: His fever keeps jumping back up, he slept for 4hrs today and is down for another lengthy one now. He does play when awake and ate his usual amount for lunch but his fluid intake is low. We're doing our best to give him as much formula and water as possible. I made an appt for tomorrow to see the doctor, assuming his day/night doesn't improve. Tomorrow will be day 5 of this.
