Update: His fever keeps jumping back up, he slept for 4hrs today and is down for another lengthy one now. He does play when awake and ate his usual amount for lunch but his fluid intake is low. We're doing our best to give him as much formula and water as possible. I made an appt for tomorrow to see the doctor, assuming his day/night doesn't improve. Tomorrow will be day 5 of this.
This sounds really similar to a virus S had a little while back. For 3-4 days, every time we thought his fever broke it would spike again. Good call on checking in with the dr; for us it just had to run its course. Good luck!

Looks like it's something viral and just has to run its course. If ge has a fever today and/or this evening then he has to go back to the dr tomorrow.

  • So Preston had a cold for over a week (along with the rest of us) and now had a raging ear infection, pus and all.  Our pediatrician recommended Mullen drops in the ears and Kids Xlear spray to help prevent it next time.  @vintagevix2016 idk if you could find it where you are but it's better than a regular saline spray.  Our pediatrician prefer more natural treatment and sent me to our local natural food store to find these.  So far the drops are helping a lot.
  • @adiaz132003 We do have Kid's Xlear spray at some of our pharmacies, I could go check it out. Right now I use Hydrasense, which I think is helping but also making his nose more irritated and that's not exactly great.
  • Damien is so miserable, poor thing. Yesterday he developed a nasty cough and his fever just won't go away. We switched to baby Motrin, which keeps his fever at bay longer but once it wears off, it spikes right back up. Last night it hit over 102. He can't seem to keep much down either. Most food and milk gets vomited up thanks to his coughing, which causes him to gag and then vomit. He wants so badly to play and smile, but you can see it in his face how miserable he is. I'm taking him back to the doctor today.

Oh no!!! I assume they will test for flu.  I hope it's not that and this will pass soon.

Poor guy! When I took one of my girls to the ER with a fever of almost 104 they told me to alternate Tylenol and Motrin, alternating the drugs apparently works better with high fevers
  • Well looks like Damien has pneumonia! The doctor is sure of it but wanted chest xrays to confirm. We did those this afternoon so hopefully we will hear from the doctor sometime late afternoon/early evening. In the meantime she recommended we alternate between motril and tylenol like @Tawny87 recommended and amoxicillin. I wish I could do more for him, he's just so unlike himself. He tries to smile and laugh but it leads to coughing fits, just breaks my heart.

  • Well it's not f'in pneumonia afterall. We got a call from the dr.'s office this evening saying th chest xray came back all clear so no pneumonia. WTH?! And this is after the dr was so super sure that's what he had. I mean, this is the same lady that sent us on our merry way on Sunday and then freaked out when she saw Damien again today because of how ill he looked and swore up and down it was pneumonia. We decided to go to the ER and 2 nurses said that his chest sounded clear. The wait to see a dr was 8hrs so we decided to book an appt tomorrow with a different doctor at the clinic. I'm just so drained. I just want to know what's going on so I know how to help him.

Ugh what a rollercoaster. Preston took almost 2 weeks to clear this last cold and had a cough with it.  Like a last horrah of cold season.  Maybe he is fighting the same thing.  Poor thing.

I'd give anything for it to just be a cold at this point.
  • Damien absolutely hates the Nosefrida, like screaming, kicking, doing everything he can to get away whenever I use it on him. The dr said that all kids don't like having their nose cleared but his reaction is so extreme that it makes me feel just awful about doing it. I try to be as gentle as possible but I literally have to use my entire body to pin him down to get the job done. Does anyone else's LO react that badly to it? The dr. checked his nose and said it looks fine so I haven't been pushing it in too far or being too forceful with it, but man it is an terrible experience for everyone involved.
  • Jackie hates the nosefreida less than the bulb. She fusses, but unless she's really stuffed she doesn't cry.

It's usually a two man job in order to clear Miles's nose out. He shakes his head at me, claws at my arms and just cries. I feel awful and I understand that having something forcefully shoved up your nose and then more stuff yanked out can't feel good, but it has to be done

We call it torture at our house.  It works better as a two person job, but if I am alone I have to pin him down with my body.  I kneel over his body and on pin his arms down next to his body between my legs.  Then I have both hands available to deal with his head.  I get screams and crying, but he seems to forget the injustice pretty quickly. He is better in the morning when he just wakes up and sometimes doesn't even cry then.  Night is the worst when he is ready for bed.
  • Yup, Preston freaks out but unlike the bulb, I can do it alone.  I use my forearm to turn his head to the side and hold down his opposite arm and then the other arm to aim.  Done in less than 19 seconds.   I tried to do it right at the end of a diaper change so that as soon as I'm do e I scoop him up and hand him a toy to stop the crying so he doesn't get even more stuffy.
  • Thank god it isn't just us then! That is such a relief. You always hear parents taving about how great the nosefrida is but rarely do you hear about the gator rolls, crying, and screaming. If my husband is home, he holds his arms and we can get the job done fast. It's the worst when I'm alone since it takes longer. I usually straddle him while on my knees, slip his hands into the sleeves of his shirt/pjs/etc, grasp the ends of the sleeves with one hand and use that arm to turn his head toward one direction, then use the other hand to suction. It's a moving job since he wiggles around so much we tend to migrate from one end of the room to the other by the time I'm finished.

Poor Damien had such a rough evening last night. He came home from daycare with a fever and then wouldn't really eat. He finally ate some grapes and took a bottle before bedtime. Then he cried anytime I put him down in the crib, which lasted until 9:30pm when he finally just wore himself out. I think that part is separation anxiety kicking in. Anywho, he woke quite a few times during the night and cried, but put himself back to sleep except for twice. This morning he had a fever of 102.5 so we gave him motrin but he wouldn't drink or eat. He's at daycare for now but I have an appt with the dr this afternoon. I'm just at a loss. He was doing so well. No fever since Thursday, recovering just fine, and 1 day back at daycare and BOOM fever, congestion, and cough. I can't keep taking half-days or full-days off from work but I'm not sure what we're supposed to do about daycare. Is this sort of thing normal? Do we just keep taking him and hope that his immune system eventually catches up?
  • The last time we visited the ped. she recommended we put 2 drops of mineral oil in each ear, twice a day, to help get rid of some of the wax build-up in Damien's ears. It's supposed to help prevent potential ear infections as he continues to shake this congestion. Anyone else used it before?
  • We were sitting in the pool this afternoon (on a sunning ledge with like 1foot of water) and Abby managed to dunk her face in and must have inhaled some water because she started hacking for like 10 seconds. She's been acting completely normal since--it's been about an hour and a half. But I'm freaking out about delayed drowning. Would you go into the doctor? Is there anything they could check for at this point?

I've worried about this before when Damien face-planted in the tub because he insisted on grabbing his ducky with his mouth. I found some little bit of comfort in knowing that statistically the number of people that drown via dry or delayed drowning is super small (it's like 1-2% or something like that), doesn't change the fact that I was still having an anxiety attack over it. My understanding is that if it is delayed (secondary) drowning, a doctor can give her oxygyn and remove the liquid.

Here's what I went off of...

Symptoms can even take between one and 72 hours to appear.

    Here’s what to look for:

    • lethargy or extreme fatigue
    • difficulty breathing
    • irritability or mood swings
    • chest pain
    • shortness of breath
    • persistent cough
    • fever
    • Discoloration (blue lips, for example)

I probably would myself, I'm kind of a paranoid mom myself.

Has anyone seen bug bites like this? I thought it was a mosquito bite but this one has multiple little yellowish heads and has a large red spot. Could this be an allergic reaction to a mosquito bite or is this normal in babies? Also, what are you guys using for repellant?

Doesn't look like a mosquito bite to me and yes my boys have had some serious swelling to mosquito bites. My ped said that it can be normal and to use Benadryl. Did you end up going to the ped?

No, I've just been treating with hydrocortisone. It did scab up a little but doesn't appear to have gotten worse or better. I tried to google what it might be, but no luck.

Could it be a type of fly bite? Maybe a deer fly or house fly?

It's possible. We were outside the last couple nights, but I didn't see too many flies. The rest of them look like normal mosquito bites. I bought some lanterns for citronella and I might look into getting our yard sprayed for mosquitos.

It's kind of hard to tell without being able to see it in pictures. It looks like it may be a reaction from a bite, has she ever had a mosquito bite before? Isshe generally acting like herself? No fever, vomiting or diarrheA?

She has a few others that have progressed normally (swollen with bump to little redness with bump) but this one is different. The redness has gone away this morning but the yellowish bumps have remained.

  • I took Damien to the dr for a follow-up visit today since he's still congested and coughing (coming on 2 months at this point). I noticed the other day that he has a lot of green goop coming from his eyes and when he coughs, he's actually coughing up phlegm now. His nose is still runny (thick and green, fun) too. She told me that he has a sinus infection at this point and has to be on antibiotics again. If we don't see improvements by Tuesday I have to bring him in again. Poor kid, he probably thinks being sick is his "normal" at this point.

Poor baby, I hope the antibiotics help. Charlotte caught a cold and now I'm sure she'll be snotty for a few weeks. I'm always worried it'll turn into an ear infection.

  • Ok boy moms.  For those that had them circumcised, are any of you still having to deal with re-adhesion issues?  I thought we were done worrying about that until today.  I check it and do still push back the skin at most diaper changes but today he had been a little fussy and on the underside of his penis is red and it looks like ttrying to adhere again.  I rubbed it apart like the doc did and applied Vaseline and he's acting fine now.  Has you experience been similar or is this something I should be concerned about?

My son wasn't circumcised so I can't speak from experience. I would say keep an eye on it and call the office Tuesday.
  • Are any of your LOs showing signs of seasonal allergies? Yesterday was the first sunny day in awhile so the babies were taken to the park. Damien was apparently doing just fine until the outing and the nap afterwards. He woke up with a fever, eyes all red, nose running, etc. He was in good spirits once we gave him a "comfort" bath and fever-reducer. He ate and drank just fine and even slept through the night. THere was no fever by bedtime and none this morning. My husband has allergies big time so we're thinking maybe Damien does too?

A few months ago Jackie had a persistent cough with no other symptoms. The ped suspected allergies (DH has hay fever) and gave us liquid generic Zyrtec. It seemed to help some and I only give it as needed.
