Re: Weekly Randoms 3/6

  • I'm leaving for babymoon Sunday. Does anyone have tips for air travel with a Snoogle or avoiding the scanner/metal detector at the airport? My dr said I can tell them I'm pregnant and ask for the pat down.
No Snoogle tips, but I always just let them know that I'm opting out of the scan and ask for a pat down. It will likely add some time to your trip through security as they'll yell for a "female assist" which can take a bit to get someone to come and do it. Depending on who does it, it can also feel a bit invasive ("I am going to use the back of my hand to check your backside now"), but that's been highly variable for me.

@Kalhan So sorry for your losses!

Yall... I KNOW this shouldn't bother me... but my students are making fun of what I decided to name my kid.  I just got a glimpse of what his life may be like in the future.  Is Fitzgerald, with the nickname Fitz really that bad/weird?!

I love it! But Fitz is one of my all-time favorite nicknames. We almost named DS Fitzwilliam.
  • @Kalhan so sorry about the losses!!

@EmeraldNC Love the name/nickname! I love old fashioned names. Can't listen to a bunch of kids.
  • @EmeraldNC I think kids just like being buttheads and will make fun at anything they get a chance to.

You can go through the scanner pregnant.  You will actually be exposed to more radiation during the flight than you will from the scanner.  I went through the normal procedure multiple times while pregnant with DD...and there are flight attendants and pilots that do it every day!

I'd think the snoogle would need to be jammed into a checked bag...probably too big to just carry onto the plane.
  • I love old names too!!!

We are going to AZ a week from Saturday and I didn't even think of the scanner thingy! We also went at Thanksgiving when I was like 10 week or something and I went through so I assume it's fine. I ended up getting patted down/felt up anyways on the way there. It was weird. I also just ordered the boppy pregnancy pillow and would love to bring it with but I'm not sure I want to take up that much room in my bag!

I think it is fine to go through the scanner too.... However, I will say, every place I've been with scanners since I have been pregnant, they have insisted that I NOT go through... (i.e. NBA game, circus)  I think because of what people THINK not because of actual science behind if scanners are safe/not-safe.

  • @kalhan I feel your pain, I went through the same thing last week.  A loss of a loved one is hard just try to be supportive.

I went through the scanner last month when I went to Illinois.  The TSA lady agent said she's worked around it all day when pregnant and it's fine.  I asked to be patted down... they wanted to scan me.  @alm52386 could you just box your snoogle up and ship it to wherever your ultimate destination is.  Couldn't cost much and then you could just send it back home that way.  Probably cheaper than having to check another bag.

  • @EmeraldNC I love that name! Although every time I hear it now I think of the guy that played the President on Scandal, or the really cute teacher in Pretty Little Liars that Aria fell for.
Not that either of those would stop me from naming my kid what I like... I would've named this LO Aria if DH wouldn't have nixed the idea lol. Kids are just mean.

  • @Knottie42089123 @alm52386 - I went though the scanners pregnant on my recent babymoon and no one stopped me. While I didn't bring my snoogle with me overseas, I did grab an extra pillow to put between my knees in the places that we were staying. You can always ask the front desk for the extra pillows.

Yup...though it's not ideal, when I've traveled by plane pregnant I usually just sleep with a fort of pillows surrounding me.  It's doable.

I traveled about a month ago and didn't bring the snoogle, I just asked the hotel for extras and they were happy to get some.

In terms of the scanner, they're really pleasant about it in my experience if you don't want to go through. They legally have to have a female on staff to do the pat down. If you're not comfortable with the scanner, don't do it! It added at most 10 minutes to my travel process each way.
  • Last pregnancy I asked my midwife about the scanner. She said avoid it if you can bc there just wasnt any evidence/studies saying it was good or bad. She said if you cant she doesnt believe a few exposures would cause harm. This was 2 years ago. Not sure if theres been studies since. It hasnt been an issue this pregnancy bc I have TSA precheck and didnt ask again.
  • I used to travel for a living. When i was expecting DD, I was also informed by a TSA Agent that they have done zero research on the scanners during pregnancy.

I chose to opt out. I only ever had 1 Agent give me a hard time over it. He said "we get more radiation holding our cell phone to our ear than this scanner". Which I replied with: my baby does not hold any cell phone. And i don't even hold my phone to my head anymore. I'd prefer to err on the side of caution and get a pat down.

  • Thanks ladies.

We just left the first funeral. It was really hard seeing the anguish of my best friend and their 10 year old son. I am feeling completely drained. We are now driving to OH for funeral number 2. Also just found out my SIL is being induced at 33 weeks. Just a stressful weekend, not for me personally, but for everyone around me. Just trying to stay strong and positive for them but it's hard not to be affected.

  • @Knottie42089123 I think the scanner is probably fine, but my understanding is that it hasn't been studied, so I opt out when pregnant. They are legally obligated to let you choose a pat down instead, regardless of your reason or lack thereof. I always just tell them I'd like to do the pat down instead of the scanner, not even mentioning pregnancy as the reason. They've never given me a hard time, but even if they tell you it is stupid or get annoyed about it, they have to let you opt out. Don't do anything you aren't comfortable with!
  • @MKRLTX I fly every week for work and it amazes me how many people blatantly stare at my belly. I can't imagine how it will be on my last few trips at 33-34 weeks!

@Knottie42089123 I don't travel with my snoogle, but that definitely won't be able to be a carry on. I would put it in a checked bag if you need it. I have pre-check usually but when I don't I just go through the scanner since my doc OKd it. My sister never went through and sometimes it added 15-20 mins at a busy TSA. They won't give you any trouble it will just take extra time.
  • I'm just going to add this here to Randoms, because it's not really worthy of its own thread IMO. For those of you who have little ones already, when did you first take your kids to the dentist?

DS is 16 months old. His doctor told me to take him to the dentist by the time he turned one. I called around to a few pediatric dentists and some of them said a lot of parents will choose to wait until after their child turns 3, as long as they are brushing frequently. The dentist his doctor suggested didn't seem like it was super important to see him right away.

Anyway, DS only has 4 teeth right now and I brush them after every meal. He's also transitioned from a bottle pretty well. Part of me thinks it's kind of pointless to take him to the dentist right now, but I'm not sure about waiting clear until he's 3. I know it's better to be safe than sorry. I could really use some feedback on your experience. I've tried google and get a million different answers. Sorry this is long and annoying. Thanks for your help everyone.
  • I took away DSs pacifier tonight. He will be 2 in 3 weeks. Holy hell this is going to be a long night. Wish me luck.
  • @erinh84 When I looked it up, most of what I read said 1 year or 6 months after first tooth (for us these line up almost perfectly as DS got his first teeth at 6 mo). I called the pediatric dentist that pretty much everyone we know uses, and they said they like to start at 1 year. DS is going the week after his 1st birthday.
  • My birthday is this weekend and on Sunday we are going out to dinner with my family. Saturday evening I want to do something with hubby, but I can't think of anything.  Anyone have any pregnancy date suggestions?

  • @erinh84 We took DD (and her relatively small number of teeth) not long after she turned 1 to a pediatric dentist. It's good for getting them acclimated to going and also gave us some good tips on how to actually get her teeth brushed (as well as to use toothpaste with fluoride - something I never would have done). It was also helpful to get guidance on what her paci was doing to her teeth.

  • @mombod good luck!  I am planning on taking my daughters once school is out for summer.  She is 3 though so I really need to stop putting it off!  It is crazy because she naps fine without it and school but God forbid we don't let her have it at nighttime.   :|

  • I took DD when we was 2.5 to the dentist. They did a full cleaning then.  I took DS at 1 because of some concerns and they let me hold him the whole time are were really awesome.  If you have the insurance for them then I feel like you might as well!

I always opt out of the scanner when pregnant too. Almost every time they tell me it's safe and slightly eye roll me but don't give me trouble. I just feel like it could be totally safe but might as well avoid since it's an option.  I really don't mind the pat down at all.  They also swipe my hands for bomb residue or whatever.  I've also baby worn through security as well and they had me walk through the metal detector then swiped both our hands.
  • We fly southwest so between the 2 of us we get 4 checked bags for free. But I think I'll just tell my mom I need like 10 pillows. Don't want my new preggo pillow getting lost!

  • @erinh84 Our pedi told us to take DD1 before she was 3, but that it wasn't necessary at 1. She's already got almost all her teeth, so I figure we'll probably take her this summer (she'll be 2 in April) when DH can update his insurance to carry her on the dental. The problem out here is that there aren't any places that will take her before 3, so we'll have to drive to the city to do it.
  • Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm going to call tomorrow to make DS an appointment. Better safe than sorry. I also didn't even think about getting him accustomed to it and such. That's a very valid point.
  • Thanks, ladies. I think I will opt for the pat down!!

@kahlan82 I can just imagine how exhausting this all is. Take care of yourself. Get rest and make sure you're eating and staying hydrated!
  • @erinh84. Starting at 2 DS began going with me to the dentist (his suggestion). All they did was let him sit and watch what happemed to me, let him squirt water in my mouth and then give him a prize. At three, he looked at his teeth with a mirror. Nothing major, no cleaninf, just exposing him to the experience. We didnt start at 1.

  • @erinh84 I have a cautionary tale re: pediatric dentistry. One of my girlfriends recently took in her 1 1/2 year old to the dentist. She has admittedly not been great about brushing his teeth, but she feeds him a very healthy diet with no refined sugar. The kid has a ton of cavities. So much so they have painted some of his teeth with a black substance to prevent any more decay, will be waiting till the rest of his teeth come in (around 2) and filling a bunch of them. She feels soooo bad, and it's a cautionary tale for me. Brush the teeth as soon as they emerge, and take to kid to the dentist when recommended.

Wow. That's scary. I will definitely be calling and making him an appointment for tomorrow. I'm pretty deligent at brushing his teeth, but I would feel terrible if he does end up having issues and I didn't take him sooner. Thanks for the input.
  • I took DS when he was two, and my family dentist simply met with us in his office and had DS open wide and play with the mirror in his mouth.  It was very informal and meant to make him comfortable.  Since that time, at 2.5 and 3, he has had full cleanings done.  For the record, we brushed with water from the first tooth to age 2.  We then used fluoride free paste and once he got the spitting done, moved to a tiny amount of fluoride paste.  No cavities so far!
  • @erinh84 I waited until 3. I didn't know before was necessary. My pediatrician and the pediatric dentist said 3, so that's when I did.

Now, we are sticklers about brushing/flossing/and rinsing with Act, but my kids have awesome teeth with no cavities.
  • Despite amazing oral hygiene I had frequent cavities when I was younger (my poor mom tried so hard.) I've had 7+ root canals and a few on the same damn tooth.

Because of my history I was so diligent with my son's teeth the moment they sprouted. Despite my intense oral hygiene regimen for him I noticed discoloration of his two lateral incisors around 10 months. I took him to the dentist and we tried our hardest to save the teeth but they are now painted with the black substance to arrest the spread of the cavities like @merrylea's friend. We go to the dentist every three months to monitor the teeth and he will eventually need the teeth capped. We are just waiting as long as possible because it would be done under general anesthesia.

He never had candy, he still hasn't had juice, we brushed, wiped, rinsed his mouth multiple times a day and he still got cavities. Horrible feeling as a parent but I truly couldn't have done anything differently.
  • Re: dental hygiene

My dentist has mentioned before that genetics plays a large part in getting plaque and cavities. Due to a lack of insurance/cashflow I didn't go to the dentist for about 3 years, and when I did finally go in for a cleaning last year, the hygienist started lecturing me about waiting so long. When she was actually looking at my teeth, she kept marveling at the fact that I had almost no plaque buildup and kept saying that I won the lottery in dental genetics.
Ironically enough, when I was a kid I had a bunch of cavities so maybe baby teeth and adult teeth have different predispositions?
  • @erinh84 I took mine at 1.5 and I was glad I did. They were very simple and did a check and "mapped" her teeth to compare in the future. About 6 month's later, she fell on her face and chipped her tooth. Since we were already a patient, they got her right in and could compare to see if any of the other teeth were moved at all. Also, my sister found out when she went with my nephew that for some reason his molars came in without enamel so when he was freaking when something got caught in his tooth he really was in pain and it was not just being a typical terrible two fit.
