Stupid Questions: February

Re: Stupid Questions: February

  • A's also had an uptick in blow outs this week. Yesterday, she pooped 2x at daycare and once at home. The first one at daycare was so bad they had to change her clothes, including her socks.

  • I'm envious of these blowouts. We're on day 4 of no poop which means an uptick in fussiness and a decrease in sleep. Ugh.

  • @SandNStarsNJ any causes for the lack of poop or is it just his Gi tract

They have no idea. He pooped daily for the first week and then started going longer and longer stretches - his record is 10 days. I've experimented with food possibilities. I went a month without dairy or grains and that didn't make a difference. I tried cutting out eggs, chocolate, etc... and have yet to find a change in his digestive tract. So if he gets super fussy I have been told to give him a suppository but am chugging prune juice in hopes that perhaps that will make an impact first. I'm also slowly reintroducing food groups; no change there either.

It did for a while and then that failed too. It's like he develops immunity to poop solutions.

  • Does anyone have any recommendations for making LO like/freak out less in the car? M HATES the car, the only baby I've ever met that doesn't like car rides, and flips out when we go anywhere. I can't even go to the grocery store without a complete meltdown. I just tried to drive to my SIL's house and he freaked out so now we're home sitting on the couch both of us crying.

Not sure of a solution but maybe he gets carsick? My brother used to hate car rides because he'd always feel sick. I can ask my mom if it started when he was a baby and ask if she had any solutions.
  • Maybe not, I just read that motion sickness doesn't usually affect babies under 2. Hmmmm.
  • @desoky01 That could be it, he does puke/spit up pretty often when I get him out of the car seat but it could also be because he works himself up so badly.
  • Oh well then he's definitely spitting up from working himself up so badly.

I really need him to get over it soon. I'm climbing the walls from baby house arrest. I'm so down today that I'm sitting here crying while nursing him and I all but yelled at him in the car while he was screaming. I know he's only this small for a short while but I am having a hard enough time with the lack of freedom; being a prisoner isn't helping.
  • My little girl hated it.
First it was important to put her bump in the seat first and then lay her back against the back, so she would sit perfectly,
She also wanted to know I was around, now she can see me as she's in the front and older, but before there was a lot of talking and singing.
As she has separation anxiety I bought her an expensive doll: Lulla Doll (lulladoll.com) we now have two hours drives with a little girl that sleeps or is awake and even smiles at me.

  • DD has a little jingle toy I hang in front of her car seat.  It's a high contrast Zebra. It distracts her in the car a fair amount.
  • I have a dilemma. I have been trying to get LO napping in his crib, this means he needs to be swaddled. Now, I have lost my opportunity to file his nails...any ideas?

Can you unswaddle him once he's passed out? Or do it when he's on an activity mat or just distracted?

I usually do it when M is nursing and I start right away when he first latches and is most hungry. That way he's less distractable. I can only do one hand at a time but that's all he'll usually tolerate anyway at any given time.

Same I have my H do it while he's on the boob
  • Unfortunately he is bottle fed. I think I'm going to need to do it while H is feeding him
  • Those of you nail clipping while nursing... how are you managing nursing while having both hands free to snip?

  • I gave up trying to clip nails in a calm fashion. My first still fights it and she is three so I have learned to just iron grip her hand and go to town with the clippers. I've learned to be fast. For DS I just do the same, grip his hand so he can't pull away and clip as fast as I can. He fusses but it's over in a minute.
  • Those of you nail clipping while nursing... how are you managing nursing while having both hands free to snip?
It's so hard to explain but I basically get him on and then cross my legs but the bottom leg I prop up on my tip toes so he's sort of wedged between my knee and the boob. He's hungry so he doesn't really wiggle at that point so it usually works.
  • Those of you nail clipping while nursing... how are you managing nursing while having both hands free to snip?
My H does it. I have him on the boob and happy and H grabs his hand and clips
  • Is your little one exclusively breastfed? Per our pediatrician breastfed babies can go as long as 10 days without a poop because breatmilk is 100% absorbed by their body, so there is no waste to eliminate.

I bite her nails. They tear super easy and if you just bite a corner and tear - they don't get too short that way either!

  • Anyone else's LO fight naps? I am at my wits end with M and naps. This kid is so hard to get down even when it's obvious he's tired. Our routine used to be: wake, eat, play, eat, sleep with his awake time being about 60 minutes. Now he just screams when I put him in the swaddle and rocking takes like 20 minutes and may or may not result in sleep. I feel like I'm tuned into his sleep cues but I must be doing something wrong because we don't have any naps without tears. And forget afternoon naps. I'm LUCKY if he sleeps between 2-6 which obviously results in a cranky baby (and mommy). We use swaddles, white noise, and blackout blinds. Is there something obvious I'm missing?
  • I wish I could be of help but I'm functioning on nap on demand. No set time or atmosphere. When he starts look sleepy I just put him down. Some days it's half the day and other days it's maybe once.

  • @MrsMaryK2016 no advice here but hugs. Our naps are hit or miss but usually not too fussy if he's acting tired. He will fight it when I put him down some but I keep a hand on him a bit and he usually goes down

Oh forget putting him down if he's not completely asleep. You would think I laid him down on a bed of hot coals.

I'm not trying to force a schedule even. If he's acting tired I try to put him down. I just have noticed that he's usually ready for a nap an hour after waking up. It used to be fine but now it's a struggle and I can't figure out why.
  • This chart was helpful for me when I was home with E, maybe it will help give you some perspective, too.

This is really helpful actually. He's three months this week so maybe he's ready to drop that fourth nap already. We'll have to give stretching those wake times out a shot. Definitely can't make things worse lol (I'm not actually laughing. I'm crying inside.)
  • @MrsMaryK2106 - I hope stretching it out helps!
  • I'm failing on this chart pretty freaking hard. What kind of daily schedule do you guys have for LO?

  • No schedule whatsoever. At daycare she naps when she naps - it isn't in any kind of schedule. And when she's home with us on the weekends it the same thing. By "I found this chart helpful" it is really just that I start to notice tired cues or fussiness and realize it's been about that much time of wakefulness so it just helps me remember that she is probably sleepy and not just being fussy for another reason. It also helps me know that she may not be sleepy if she's fussy after only 45 minutes of waking up from a nap (I'm discovering boredom is her biggest reason for non-sleepy fussiness).

    Me too!

    • BFP: 9/12/19 — EDD 5/15/20

  • Our schedule:

    wake 7am
    eat/play 7-9
    nap 9-10ish
    eat/play/maybe cat nap/eat 10-1
    nap 1-3
    play/eat/cat nap/play 3-630ish
eat and go to bed 630-7
    usually 1 feeding overnight

daycare starts in 3 weeks and I'm sure they won't keep this schedule so we will see how it affects his sleep

i don't love some of the long awake stretches so I'm happy when he cat naps which is usually either in the car seat/stroller running errands or walking or I'll hold him for one in the evening when he gets fussy.
  • Out schedule is

    Up at 645am
    7a-7p Who the hell knows
    Bed at 8pm

But that's what happens when you have 4 kids and aren't ever able to schedule any naps or feedings.. lots of naps during errands and eating on the fly!
  • Holy crap @kvruns - a 7-7 sleep with one feeding?!? That's awesome!

@leighry - That sound a lot like mine but I'm only on #2!

  • @SandNStarsNJ there are nights he fusses when put to bed and has to be soothed though it's getting fewer and far between. I'm sure he's not sleeping the whole time but he stays quiet enough usually.

That's still awesome. My 2 yo does 7-7 without waking but she definitely wasn't doing that at this age. I think I might start making the conscious effort to identify at least two nap times. I'm in the habit of putting LO down after he has fallen asleep on me and at no other time. It's what I did with our first. But daycare got her on a schedule for us.
