Since the Boppy was brought up again, any opinions on Boppy vs Brest Friend? Only things I've heard so far is that the Brest Friend may be more supportive, but Boppy more versatile. Anyone tried both?
@starphish18 I had both and the Brest Friend was more comfortable for breastfeeding. I used the Boppy Lounger waaaaaay more than the regular Boppy for the reasons mentioned in my previous post. I did start using the regular Boppy when DS was starting to sit up.
The Boppy was too low for the newborn stage. I was always hunched over or had to put an extra pillow underneath it to raise it up. I think there is a new version that has better height but I haven't seen it in person yet.
@NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot@lrwardrop@WombThereItIs Question about the Boon system: How do you clean the grass tray? If all the water is dripping onto it, it would seem to me that would get moldy fast? Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks!

This would be my one complaint. You do have to clean it frequently to avoid mold.
Thanks for the comments re: the city select double. I ended up buying it. It's in great shape and I'm happy I did. It came with the glider board, which I think DD will use often. She fits pretty well in the front seat right now too. I figure I can re-sell it once we out grow it. Oh, and I can still get th correct car seat attachment.

I would get the breast friend. I got a boppy because I didn't know about breast friend and it was good enough so it's what I will be using for #3 (and used for both of the other kids.) That said, I didn't find the other uses of the boppy that compelling (i.e. as a "place for baby to sit"). We had a bouncy seat. And other than that it's just tummy time and figuring out how to sit on your own. I found out about breast friend when I was having trouble with breastfeeding and the lactation consultant at the pediatrician's office produced it. WOW! Loved it. I think it's better for nursing. So if you want to get one, I'd get the breast friend. But a lot of people like the boppy for all of the other uses. And once we established feeding, the boppy was fine. With #2 we didn't have the same difficulties, so I didn't feel the need to get a breast friend or anything. If issues arise for #3 (just being an experienced feeder doesn't make you immune to them), I won't hesitate to buy helpful products like the breast friend.
Does anyone have a Boppy cover that they love that didn't cost a small fortune? I used the Boppy so much with my son that the cover looks VERY sad. I looked on Amazon (not many options) and Etsy (seems expensive, like $30-$50 depending on fabric). I may just have to bite the bullet and pay a little more than I want, but figured I'd ask for recommendations first!

They are at Target. You could also check thrift stores/consignment shops!
Do any STMs have a recommendation for a split screen (side by side) monitor? Our current single screen monitor is a Summer Infant and it has had its share of issues over the last 3 years, so I am open to other brands. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance!
Does anyone use a barrier in their car to block the car seat? I think I've heard of some people using one to keep kids from fighting. At the moment, I'm more concerned that my dog might incidentally step on the baby. She rides in a car really well, but she does get a bit hyped up if she sees a squirrel or other small creature, so I could just see her struggling to get a better look without realizing she was stepping on the car seat. Any "barrier" recommendations?

Is the dog in the backseat? or very back? If just in the backseat I would not recommend anything as I don't think there is any sort of safe barrier that would not become a projectile risk. I suppose you could do something like a milk snob or covered goods cover over the car seat (if your car seat allows the handle to up while driving)
@nda_roxybabe Usually she's in the back seat. I've heard of fabric/mesh barriers, though, that attach and wouldn't be a projectile. They extend from the back seat to the front, so it's like blocking off a portion, not a barrier specifically for or up against the car seat itself. That's more so what I'm wondering about...If anyone has tried that.

Ohhh, I've not heard of anything like that! That sounds like it would be good!
I'm already planning on getting a Tula, but after seeing many recommendations to have a second carrier for H, I'd like to keep my eye out for a good deal on an Ergo, as well. Could anyone tell me what a good price would be for a gently used Ergo (probably 360)?
ETA: I forgot we have a specific baby wearing thread. I probably should have asked this there, sorry!
@starphish18 have you considered a dog seatbelt? It might make me sound like a crazy dog lady but it serves double purpose of keeping pup off of baby in case of rogue squirrel or other distraction and also keeps pup from becoming a projectile in an accident. My fur baby is happier in his seat belt in the car than he is roaming free. Ours is a harness that you thread the seatbelt of the car through. It works really well for suddenly stops. It's a little hard to see in the pic but we use now for road trips and we would use it if we had dog and baby in the car together.
@starphish18 I see Ergo 360's go for around $65ish used, and I sold one of my original Ergos for $45 fairly easily. If your on Facebook check out Babywearing on a budget. Zulily also has Ergos all the time, Originals are $65 ish normally and 360s are usually around $85-$90.
New to the May 2017 board bc we had a crazy fall/winter and I'm just now getting around to planning for this kiddo! This is kiddo #4...currently have 3 DD's ages 5 1/2, 4 and 2. Kiddo #4 is a boy!
Soo that being said we've used our fair share of gear and live (comfortably) on what many would consider a very low income so I've spent lots of time comparing cost with convenience and learning when to splurge and when not to.
Infant Car Seat - For kiddos 1 & 2 we used the graco snugride 30 and loved it. The price was right for the features offered.
After 2 kiddos used it back to back the foam under the cover was shot and we went cheap (Baby Trend) for kiddo #3 and I'm seriously considering buying something new for kiddo #4, that's how much I didn't like it.
Biggest complaints about the Baby trend seat was that the handle bar was incredibly hard to move between positions and that the lap belt clasps had to be inserted together rather than 1 at a time. Also, totally rookie mistake but found out after we got it home (we live over an hour from major stores) that it doesn't actually work with either of my strollers...I managed some hacks to get through the summer but what a pain.
Convertible Car Seats - we have 2 safety first guide 65 sport seats...LOVE THEM! I did LOTS of research on this because we knew we wanted 3+ kids and there was a possibility (that ended up happening) that we would have to have 3 car seats across a back seat before upgrading to a minivan. They are easy to move between cars, take on an airplane, and the price is significantly less than the Diono's that are typically recommended for 3 across use. Also, the 65lb weight limit!! Although my 5 1/2 yr old had to move up to a booster (with 5 or harness) wellllllll before 65lbs bc she outgrew the height limit. But it was fine because DD3 was ready to take over the convertible seat. I highly highly recommend this seat.
Strollers - I've had a number, some purchased, some handed down. The 2 I recommend are the Graco Literider stroller. It can take a car seat, collapses and opens easily with 1 hand and has an amazing basket underneath and it's reasonably priced.
For a double stroller I highly recommend the Countours Double stroller. I found mine used for $80...it was used for 3 kids and had almost no visible wear and tear. The seats can be moved into multiple configurations and the basket has actually held my oldest daughter on more than one occasion. Mine is fairly heavy bc it's old but the newer ones are super light for a double stroller. The only negative to this stroller is you have to buy the snack tray separate but you can find it on amazon cheap.
Bouncy Seats, Swings, etc - For this one it really depends on the size of your home...for DD's 1 and 2 we lived in a TINY place and we were totally set with a swing (collapsible) for the early days and a baby Einstein exersaucer for once a little older.
With DD3 we had moved to a different state with a significantly lower cost of living and found ourselves with way too much space...ended up needed a bouncer or 3 to spread throughout the split level home.
As far as swings...we had a $50 floor level collapsible swing for the first two and it was great, but only ran on batteries. With dd#3 we were gifted a used, larger graco plug in swing that died pretty early so I really can't say yay or nay on it.
i highly recommend the baby Eisenstein exersaucer. Really any with springs vs the hard plastic legs. The plastic leg ones are sooo stinking loud once your child gets bigger. But seriously all 3 of my kids spent significant time in the baby Einstein.
As as far as bouncy seats, you really only want/need one if you have a huge place and want somewhere to put baby down without transporting the swing from room to room.
Rock n play...didn't have 1 with #1 and thought they were a waste of money. Was gifted one with #2 and thank goodness! She LIVED in it for 6 months due to cows milk and soy intolerance issues. For #3 it was one of the things we could leave in a room to avoid pulling a bouncer or swing from room to room.
Changing table....waste of money unless th nursery is huge and you need to fill space or you have tiny closets and need it for storage. We sold ours after #1 bc really you just change the baby wherever you are...floor, couch, bed...or if you are tall and leaning over is an issue, a changing pad on top of a dresser works just as well.
Pacis - mams all the way...all 3 of my girls loved them.
Noise machine - graco sweet slumber sound machine....love love love! Last forever, small enough to travel with.
diaper bag - 31 gifts zip top utility bag...love love love, will never go back to a traditional diaper bag.
crib - don't go crazy price wise....your child will chew on it.
Car seat mirror...especially first time mom's, I know there are arguments that they cause distracted driving but seriously if I felt like my shield was too quiet or coughed weird or any of the other new mom fears, it was way better that I could do a quick peek in the rear view mirror and see the baby was safe and sound bc of the car seat mirror. No fancy bells and whistles needed though, just a simple mirror.
Boppy...used my boppy with all 3 but never tried the breastfriend so I can't do a comparison. I'm investing in a nursie this time around though bc the boppy was too big, never where I needed it and I hurt my back. Excited to try the Nursie this time around as based on reviews it solves all my boppy complaints.
Pack n play..simple is better, especially if being budget conscious. Got talked into one with the bells and whistles and never used them! I do recommend the quilted sheets though for a little extra padding over the regular sheets.
High chair...we used the fisher price space saver for the first 3...after 5 years of continuous use it is shot! At the time it made sense due to space limits, this time around we have the opposite issue...don't want to sacrifice a chair so I'm looking into free standing high chairs...leaning strongly towards the evenflo high chair for price and dual functionality reasons.
Swaddling blankets - Spend the money for the muslin ones!! The Aden & anais were the only Muslim ones on the market and cost $$$$ so I didn't splurge and ended up giving in with dd2...they are sooo worth it. The swaddle is so much tighter/more secure and they can be used for everything...nursing cover, car seat cover, burp cloth, etc and they last! Highly recommend.
Breast Pump/Bottles - I had the Avent double pump for kiddos 1 & 2 - and thought it was great. No complaints except no battery option. Used avent bottles as well with no issues, no nipple confusion, etc.
With #3 I got the models pump in style bc the Avent had died and honestly I wasn't a huge fan. It didn't pump any better or worse and clean up was a pain. Only plus was the battery option bc my pumping space didn't have an outlet. Looking into the Spectra S1 of insurance will cover it, otherwise I will go back to the Avent.
Also, I highly recommend a manual single pump to through in your purse for date night or anytime you just can't lug the double pump somewhere.
With #3 the Avent bottles and nipples were looking pretty sad so I decided to try out the Kiinde system and I LOVE it!!!! It's sooo easy, love not having to wash bottles or pour milk back and forth between storage bags and bottles. Honestly we reused the milk bags, as long as they hadn't been frozen they lasted 3-4 uses easily. We just rinsed with hot soapy water and never had any issues getting them clean. Wish this option had been available for the first 2 as well.
Monitor - maybe I'm weird but I just never felt the need for a video monitor. We used a couple others before settling on the Vtech Safe & Sound digital audio monitor. It has a really far radius which is great if you spend a lot of time outside or have a multi level home. It also allows you to determine how sensitive you want it to be to noises...with a lower sensitivity setting it won't go off every time baby coughs and the white noise machine won't set it off. It does occasionally (once a month?) have a night where it will lose its link once or twice and the obnoxious beep will wake you up but you just turn it off then back on and it relinks. And for the price I'm ok with that.
Geez that's long but I think that was all the biggies. Good luck!!!!
I'm so amazed that a first time poster (for our group) put that much thought, effort, and time into intro'ing. See, lurkers, that's how it's done! Mic drop @JenGrl8503 and welcome aboard.
Thanks ladies!! I was mildly active from day 1 with my previous 3 so I'm pretty familiar with bump etiquette . But about the time we found out we were pregnant we were closing on our major fixer upper of a house and taking on a foster teenager and fall and the holidays just totally got away from me. My husband mentioned the other day that he hadn't heard me mention the bump yet this pregnancy and I was like "oh my goodness, you're right!" So I'm working on remedying that
I was honestly thinking that a glider wasn't a necessity, but a luxury. Now you guys have me thinking otherwise.
They're definetly not a necessity! I didn't have one with DS and don't plan on getting one this time, a comfy spot to sit is all you need, so any old arm chair, lounge, laying in bed, it all works, it's just about what you find comfortable.

Agreed with @PartiallyDomesticated we actually went with a recliner and my husband used it way more than I did. I had a great couch at the time and I just had everything I needed right there. It's definitely a personal preference.
It's so interesting to see what some families consider a necessity and others don't. We still use the rocking chair in DD's room at 3yo, especially now that I'm pregnant. It's where we read our books before bedtime and where we have a moment of snuggle time before climbing into bed or immediately after waking up in the morning. I'll be sad to move it to the nursery for LO.
I know we've gone over it, but can we have the Glider Vs. Rocker debate again?? My shower is in a month and I want to have the right thing on my list.
I currently have a PB wingback rocker on there. I'm starting to worry I'll wish I'd done a glider. It'll be going on carpet and I don't want it to be too much ability to rock. Would a glider be better? There's one from West Elm that I like that is comparable price.
I just bought a second glider for kid #2. I love it.
For me having the side to side swivel is key because so I can turn and easily step out to the side of the ottoman. I'm clumsy and also had a crappy sleeper so a smoother motion to transfer was my friend. Also it makes twisting around to grab things of the side table or thrown objects easy.

2nd this! 2.5yo DS loves his rocker so much that we decided to buy a new one for the baby's room, even though it's just another expense. We still hang out before and after bed every night reading books and snuggling in his chair and it's probably my favorite times of the day.
The new chair is so much more comfy. I like the side to side swivel option, but because mine moves, we often slam into the mirrored sliding closet doors, which is a annoying. Plus I always feel like I'm hitting the nightstand next to the chair. So maybe I don't need it to move.
On a related note, I need to find a slipcover for the newer chair. It's currently cream and will not match the nursery. Any recommendations?
Also meant to respond to @nda_roxybabe...we have carpet in both kiddos room and went with gliders because I wasn't sure I'd like a rocker on carpet. Hopefully someone here has a rocker on carpet and can chime in, too, but I do love our gliders...the one we bought for the new baby's room is a glider/recliner, which I'm pretty excited about. We actually had a chaise lounger in my DS's room along with the glider when he was an infant, and I preferred nursing and feeding on that over the glider because it was just more comfortable. So, I guess what I'm saying is (in this rambling message)...glider vs. rocker is probably not as important as overall comfort.
@nda_roxybabe I feel like a glider offers you more ease on carpet. We also liked a glider so we couldn't accidentally rock on a cat's tail in our house. I haven't compared the two by using both, but we have a glider and I feel it was the right choice.
@Kipperoo that's why we bought a second, my 2 year old still loves his chair for bedtime and pre nap books. We also went for the recliner glider this time because we live the same life apparently.

:O I dont want to rock on the poor puppy. Good point.

Ha! Twinners! I hope I like the recliner glider as much as I think I will. I also weirdly imagined DS having an immediate hatred for new baby because he took her chair away. Thanks, pregnancy hormones.
@nda_roxybabe FWIW when I was talking to someone at Pottery Barn and playing with swatches she specifically recommended not getting the velvet because it is less easy to clean and more likely to fade or wear unevenly from use. PB and WE are the same company and use the same fabrics.
You can always order swatches for free too. Mine took about a week to arrive.
I also got a glider because I liked that I could swivel around. I have ours placed near the crib, bookcase, and window, so I can get into it when it's faced into the room and then swivel it to look out the window or grab something from the bookshelf. That just seemed like such a nice option when I was comparing, and would be especially helpful for tight spaces. Also, I liked the idea of not having the moving legs to potentially run over our dog, a kid, or even my own feet.

For me having the side to side swivel is key because so I can turn and easily step out to the side of the ottoman. I'm clumsy and also had a crappy sleeper so a smoother motion to transfer was my friend. Also it makes twisting around to grab things of the side table or thrown objects easy.

In one of the following colors: Performance Velvet, Dove Gray OR Heathered Crosshatch in Feather Grey OR Brushed Heather in Grey Haze
I'm not sure how I feel about performance velvet (will it be hot? I dont like microfiber..is it too light?), BUT it ships quickest.
Now, fingers crossed a set of parents feels so inclined.

You can always order swatches for free too. Mine took about a week to arrive.
