This stems from last week's random post, but do any STMs feel like they are experiencing things slower than last time? I'm not feeling true kicks yet (probably due to anterior placenta), I don't have sciatic pain yet (please stay away!), and I still don't really "feel" pregnant. If it weren't for rlp and an expanding midsection, I would forget that I'm expecting!
I'm the exact opposite. I am experiencing things so much faster this time around than in my first pregnancy.  I could tell I was pregnant just a few days after we  conceived and way before I could turn a pregnancy test positive. I know that sounds crazy and I never would have believed it if I didn't live through it. The symptoms seriously started almost immediately and haven't let up!

ETA a word I left out.

  • @starphish18 my son is petty average in height and at a little over 2 he definitely needs the extra space, he's about 36". A 40" crib would give him very little extra space at the top or bottom. I'm lucky because he shows no sign of climbing out soon and I hope to keep him in there until he's 3!

For perspective this is him at about 22 months. If he wasn't at the diagonal you can tell he would be taking up a good bit of the length.

@bacorrea Nope sorry, I've got an Arizonan, Texan, and now Washington state but no Langley AFB. Isn't it a Joint Base now with Fort Eustis? I've heard good things about Eustis! Your right, the military board is always slow. I go on there once in awhile just to check but never anything new.
Yes it is. Since DH and I are separated and I am with my parents I switched to Tricare North to keep Prime. We are assigned to Eustis which is fine, but they don't have OB. I have to be seen/deliver at Joint Base Langley-Eustis which is 45 minutes away.
  • @starphish18 I agree that it totally depends on your life and your kid. DD climbed out of the (regular sized) crib at 15 months. A mini would have been totally fine for her. I may actually get a mini for this kid.
  • Question for STMs or maybe adults who have one for yourselves - I am looking for a mat (I guess) to put down in the tub to prevent slip-n-slides. I would love one that I don't have to pick up after every bath and that will never mildew, but that may be like looking for a unicorn! Does anyone use anything that they love?
  • @starphish18 I love my diaper pail. I keep an arm & hammer deodorizer inside it with a trash bag. I like that I didn't have to buy special bags. Then of course like mentioned above, I use the arm & hammer bags for poopy diapers.

  • The diaper champ is awesome. We love ours. But I still always felt like it made the room smell like poo, even with the arm and hammer clip. Putting poop diapers outside wasn't really a hassle.  But, like a lot of BF babies, DD only pooped once a week.

  • @starphish18 the Ubbi is the best! I have a two yr old girl at home and this pail has held up so well. I already bought another for the twins room. It is always on my recommendation list for mamas to be!

  • @starphish18 we used the Tommy Tippy 360 diaper sealer and we loved it. We will be using the same kind this time around too. As long as you actually fold the diaper up and put it in the thing the right way with the knob it pretty much keeps the smell out. There were times fiancé would try to just shove it down and that would make it not seal properly.

  • @starphish18 I have no issues with my Diapee Genie and I've used it for two kids! It smells when you open it and it's getting full but I've never noticed a smell in the room. I keep an air freshener in the bottom of the pail and one clipped to the lid.

@KMD1106 My sciatic pain is definitely here faster but the kicks are less noticeable if not even at all so I'm suspecting anterior placenta too. I also think with second+ baby your so busy with your first baby running around after it that you don't notice the changes/movements/pains as much!

  • @bacorrea Just out of curiosity, would it be easier for you to be on standard? I actually had DD1 and DD2 while on standard and was seen at a civilian OB/hospital. All of my visits/ultrasounds/labwork was covered at 100% and for the actual delivery and hospital stay (vaginal, no NICU/complications) I think we paid $65 total. I chose Prime this time because we are living on post so the hospital is very close and my friends/neighbors all had good delivery experiences there. 45 min drive seems far!

  • @KMD1106 - I have felt the same way this pregnancy.  I started feeling this baby only a few days later than I did DD but it took 6-7 weeks before baby kicks became more regular. I have also had more energy than I did with her. As far as sciatica goes, I experienced it badly with DS but I didn't with DD and so far it hasn't bothered me either.

@h&pmomma no. The standard hospital here isn't that great from what I hear.

I keep trying to figure out how to tag you!

I never used a diaper pail because I didn't want one more thing to have to clean/empty. I just take all of the poop diapers directly outside in a grocery bag, I think its easier. I didn't think the diapers smelled that bad until they start eating real food.

I think mini cribs are about the same size as a pack n play if that gives you a size reference. My son seems to be a little large for his age ( he is a little over a year) and I would say he can sleep fine in a smaller crib but the larger regular size crib is better. more room to move around and get comfortable in.

  • I am so happy to be back! Man are the holidays busy! Was off work since the 16th and feel like I have not sat down since then.

As for the item questions that were mentioned earlier. Towels, washclothes, and baby lotion are all not necessary to register for IMO. Without registering I received enough at my shower. DS is over a year and we haven't bought baby wash. They are also all sold at our grocery store, so if I found myself in want of something I just threw it on the grocery list. I am a fan of the changing pad liners. I had 3 and sometimes would go through all of them before that load would be washed. They are easier then stripping the changing pad. For a diaper pail we just used a small trash with a step lid and a removable inside basket. From Ikea I think. It has worked just fine. For extra smelly diapers, I throw it in a doggie poop bag before putting them in the pail. It gets dumped every 1.5 days or less. We owned a boppy and though I did not find completely helpful for breastfeeding it was well loved the first 5 months. As for mini-cribs, they are adorable. I do think my son would out grow one before ready to transition to a regular bed. At this point his head and feet would probably be touching the sides. He is big for his age though (90s percentile). I also didn't care if my crib transitioned to a full bed, as I hoped to have more then one child and would use the crib again.

  • I love talking baby stuff! Despite not having had a baby yet. From all the reading I did on diaper pails, it sounded like Diaper Genie Essential is a good one, so I am going with that.
I plan on making my 2 of my own diaper caddies for downstairs and our bedroom (while baby is in there with us).  Just a cute rectangular storage cube from Target with diapers, a thing of wipes, cream (IDK?), and then I'll store a paci and spit up rag in there as well. I know SIL has done a similar set up with all 3 babies and it gets used a lot. I made her last one for her with a pretty floral container.

  • Lurking this morning makes me wonder who here watches The Bachelor? It's a guilty pleasure of mine and I have actually gotten MH hooked on it too! It did lose some excitement since I couldn't drink wine while watching :) Wouldn't want to clog up the Randoms with Bachelor talk but would be down for starting a thread if I'm not the only crazy who watches!
  • Alright STM's, whats it feel like when baby gets hiccups? I'm suddenly feeling a fairly rhythmic thumping going on. Is it too early for hiccups?

I think the Bump 20 weeks development info mentions hiccups.

Sounds like hiccups! I don't think it's too early. My Ovia app mentioned them weeks ago, though I haven't felt any yet. DS had them pretty much everyday, it was adorable.

  • @ShadeofGreen816 I totally watch! One of my guilty pleasures :). I've gotten husband into watching it too, and it's kind of hilarious to hear his take on things sometimes.
  • @ShadeofGreen816 I'm totally down. I love the bachelor!

@nda_roxybabe  its very possible! If its consistent then that may be what it is. DD would hiccup multiple times a day and I would feel it all the time in the third tri. Its cute except when youre trying to sleep and your whole belly just ticks every second

  • Yay! I'm back at work, which means I'm back in the Bump action! It's amazing how work feels like a break after 10 days of toddler fun. For all you FTMs planning to go back to work, I'd say that was by far the biggest surprise for me. I've gone from dreading going back to work on a Monday to greatly looking forward to it. Which isn't to say that the weekends are terrible, just that it's nice to have the change of pace.

@ShadeofGreen816, count me in as a Bachelor fan! Or Bachelorette...I just love it. Even though it's pretty much the worst show on TV. And it's nowhere near as good without a bottle of wine.

    AND onto the baby items...
Hooded baby towels I love the hooded towels and still use them for my 2 year old, BUT we bought big, thick ones from Carters when he was a baby and are still using them now. I think they are technically beach towels. I did not like the ones that were super small and thin (meant for babies). They just didn't seem warm enough and he outgrew them very, very quickly. I don't think special towels are really necessary, but they (obviously) will need some kind of towel, so to me it made sense to just buy him a few for his bathroom.
Baby washcloth (vs any regular washcloth) We had some, but I don't remember them being particularly useful over other washcloths. I did, however, go through multiple burp cloths per day. I have a stack of super soft oversized ones that my grandma made me. :-)
Changing pad liners overtop changing pad covers I did not use these with my son but wish I would have and plan to with this one. It was such a pain to change out the covers and the colors faded pretty quickly because we had to wash so frequently. I did get a wipeable cover from Target about a year ago and I still use that for my son. It's great.
Baby lotion My son has sensitive skin--Aveeno has been great for him from day 1. I will likely do the same with this one. Much like the towels, you will likely want SOME kind of lotion, so there is no harm in making it a baby lotion if you find one you like.
Diaper caddies (presumably just a plastic container for the wipes?) Again, this is something I didn't use with my first because we were in such a tiny apartment, there was no reason that I couldn't just walk into his room and change him. Now we are in a house and I will likely buy a caddy to keep on the main floor because the baby's room will be on the second floor. I never used a diaper genie/pail because I can't stand that stuff building up and would rather just bag it and take it to the trash using the Arm & Hammer bags others have mentioned--AWESOME. We still use them for particularly bad diapers with my son.
Nursing pillow Yes. I'd say this is a yes even if you decide not to nurse. It's a nice way to prop the baby close to use and still keep your hands somewhat free. Also nice to just prop the baby up on the floor, on the couch, etc.

  • @ShadeofGreen816 ugh that's so frustrating. Don't let people get to you. If it is any consolation we have flights booked for a short trip to NYC (we live in FL)  when baby will be about 12 weeks and fully plan on leaving baby and DD with my parents. I love being a mommy, but I'm the type of person that needs those days occasionally to recharge. Especially in the first year!

Now that DD is 3 she spends normally 1 night a week with my parents. Fiancé and I get alone time, and my parents get their own special time with DD. They won't keep baby 2 as often until he's no longer nursing.

  • Oh no! Sorry to hear that @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot. I hope she has a speedy recovery.
  • DD broke her arm at daycare today. We are sitting in the ER waiting to hear what the X-rays show. This is our first (and hopefully last?) emergency. My pregnant self is having a hard time keeping it together. Motherhood is hard.
    Oh no! What happened? Hugs!

  • @NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot - Poor thing! I hope a pretty cast will help to lift her spirits, but I know it won't help a mama's heart. I hope y'all have an efficient visit and can head home to rest and regroup before long!
