  • Hi ladies,

We just had our anatomy scan today and everything was great until the doc located a cleft lip. He was very reassuring and said Los Angeles has one of the best surgeons and children's hospitals in the world. Still, we were both a bit bewildered, my DH nearly fainted and he had to lie on the floor for a minute to avoid it. I think he was just so taken aback by any kind of news at all - already in daddy mode. I know it's a small defect but it's a lot to process. The idea of surgery as a baby, concept of baby pictures is different, recovery at such a young age. Does anyone have experience with a baby having a cleft lip?

  • Thanks for the love everyone. The more I think about the possible outcomes the more scared I get so it's really nice to have the virtual support.

My procedure was postponed until tomorrow morning. Labour and Delivery was crazy busy and they had nowhere to keep me overnight.

The OB told me before I left that I'm 100% not allowed to go back to work for the rest of my pregnancy. I'm at a very high risk for early labour so they don't want to risk anything.

@sweaterboots I'm glad baby checked out fine aside from the cleft lip. Were they able to tell how severe it is? A mama from my last BMB had her baby born with one but she had other complications too so I can't really say if the other issues caused further delays or not but she did have delays in eating solids and speaking. She is making amazing progress now though! You can probably search around for a support group on facebook or whatever with moms that have gone through this so you can know what to expect.

@CherryBananas boo to the delayed procedure. I hope its quick tomorrow! And i hope the dr order to not work is not the worse thing (financially and mentally )

  • @sweaterboots, I have no experience, but I imagine that is tough to hear. I'm glad everything else looks good though! I'm curious about how certain they are this early?

@CherryBananas, I'm sorry you have to be done with work! I hope you can get long term disability through your company to offset the missed work. My friend had to do that when she went on bedrest with her first set of twins. Did the doctors give you an idea of how long this would help keep baby in?

  • @sweaterboots no experience here but I'm sorry that things weren't expected. That must have been startling news! Big, gentle Internet hugs from me.

@pshaortao mentally I'll be ok. Financially we'll have to look into a few things. I'm not sure if I can start claiming my mat leave pay this early (not ideal anyways), or if I can get disability through DH's work.

@KMD1106 they can't say for sure. The procedure isn't even guaranteed to help - it can't hurt things but we won't know if it was beneficial until I go into labour (early labour means it was good we did it, full term labour likely means it wasn't necessary). All they know for sure is that the risk to the baby during the procedure goes up the longer I wait, which is why we decided to go ahead. I still may carry to full term, or I could go into labour next week. All this uncertainty is what's got me on edge.

  • @CherryBananas I hope that you end up carrying to full term so baby can cook as long as possible. Hopefully the finance part will work itself out and asap so you can relax

  • @CherryBananas I'm sorry you're going through this but I'm glad your medical team is on it.

@sweaterboots I'm so sorry to hear about this finding although I'm glad everything else is fine. I have known a few kids at my school who had cleft lips at birth. By the time they got to us they had had surgery years before and aside from a very small scar you couldn't tell physically. They were both in speech therapy (one moved away, one still is) but very easy to understand, they just needed some help with a few sounds. They both had cleft palates as well as cleft lips which I believe makes articulation more challenging. I'm not a speech therapist but my understanding is they were expected to need some articulation support for a while, but other than that and a small scar they are very normal kids.

im sorry you guys are dealing with these things. I have no information, just support. Thinking of both of you and your families.

    Just catching up...

@CherryBananas sending good vibes your way. Hoping you have a smooth procedure in the AM and have enough distraction to help with the wandering mind. Also hoping you get to claim disability so you don't have to think about finances. Please keep us updated. It was so nice to read all of the support on here for you!

@sweaterboots and @cheryle418 also sending positive vibes your way. It's hard to grasp or process a "finding" when all you want to hear is everything is "normal." I'm glad you'll both have plenty of support in managing these findings.

  • Random: one of my favorite times of the week is Saturday morning because I wake up about 2 hours earlier than DH, and I can sit on the couch in the quiet browsing online, reading, or watching shows that he doesn't like. I love my husband but he is the epitome of extrovert and wants to hang out all the time! I need my introvert me-time every once in a while.

  • @sweaterboots my cousin's son was born with a cleft lip and palate. He had a lot of other things going on and it took a while to have his surgery because several other surgeries took priority. I remember she took tons of pictures of him with a pacifier so you could not see it at all and he is such an adorable baby. If that is the only thing they found hopefully they can perform the surgery earlier than later. I've known of several babies that have had various surgeries within the first 2 months of life. Babies are strong and determined, they really amaze me. A friend of mine was born with a cleft lip and aside from a small scar, she has no speech problems as an adult.

  • @CherryBananas thinking of you this morning! Praying for peace during the procedure and the waiting. Waiting is SO hard!

@sweaterboots I'm so sorry to hear that you had a scare too. I've known several kids who had a cleft lip when they were born, my best friend in elementary school even was, and like others have said, aside from a small scar, you'd never know...and even that you had to really look for! But believe me I know how terrifying it is to think of such a small little defenseless baby having to go through surgery :( I'm trying not to think about the possibility too much with mine.

Ive got my sonogram scheduled with the high risk specialist for Wednesday morning. My biggest hope is that the blockage they found from the first scan (4 weeks apart) has already started to resolve itself.

Quick question...my anatomy scan (with ultrasound tech only) was on Dec 5, and I just got the call from my doctor alerting me of this problem with the blockage between his right kidney and bladder two days ago, and even had a check up with my dr on Dec 19, and nothing was mentioned. I asked my doctor why the delay and she said it takes 2 weeks usually to process it all, and she was off for Christmas in between...but 2 weeks would have been my check up with her... is it wrong of me to be really offput by that and feel not as comfortable with her as my doctor now? I feel like I was lied to for 3 weeks that my baby was fine and we could have been doing more in the meantime... sorry, rant over!
  • @CherylE418 my anatomy scan was scheduled for a Friday at the hospital and the doctor expected to have my results by my appointment with her the following Tuesday. It could be a differences in resources/personnel available or level of thoroughness. Take from this what you will

  • @CherryBananas thinking of you! hope your procedure went well!

@CherylE418 I would not like that either. My a/s was reviewed minutes later by the dr and discussed immediately. I'm not sure why that would take weeks to process...
  • Super random- all week I've been wanting a specific pastry from a coffee shop in town.  I don't like going to this coffee shop because the parking lot is crazy and my toddler is allergic to almost everything there, and gets super tantrum-y when I don't get her anything. Husband has gone three times to try to get it, they are out every time. (They are usually sold out by noon, he doesn't believe me.) So every day he has come home with totally random other pastries that he likes instead. And I feel like a total jerk because he is trying to be nice. But it's just making me mad. He's eating tons of pastries that I don't like and acting like he's doing it to be nice to me. Sigh.
  • Does anyone get pain around their belly button? I'm 19 weeks tomorrow. It's not a cramping or stabbing pain - it's just kind of a little annoyance.

  • @kns1988 Yes, I was just talking about something similar on the Movements thread. I've definitely noticed my belly button is getting more shallow. I think, as things are growing and moving, there's some pressure there for sure. I've always had a bit of what I would describe as a "nerve shock" feeling if I poked my belly button, so I feel a version of that occasionally as it's getting pushed upon from the inside. Also, I do get some RLP that occurs kind of below my belly button. Not sure if either of these things are quite what you're experiencing.
  • starphish18, yeah, I was thinking it was related to my belly button stretching out. It's also definitely getting more shallow. I don't think it's RLP because it's more of a constant feeling; the RLP that I get is usually a stab around my pelvic area.

  • @starphish18 there with you on the whole nesting! Ive completely redone my daughters whole room (moving out any baby items that are needed for this LO) bought her new bedding for her big girl bed and redid her closet organization. I pulled out all DD clothes NB-3/6 months have them separated by size all I need to do is wash them. I've even bought things I'll need for my hospital bag, like toiletries! I feel so productive these days!

I think that as long as you go by the time on the box for dosage, you should be fine!
  • @KMD1106, @squirtgun is right. Don't take more frequently than listed on the package. The "official" max dose is 4grams (4000mg), but it's now recommended to stay under 2-3g. Also watch any other "cold" products to make sure they don't contain any Tylenol/acetaminophen. So if you're finding that you need it more than twice a day, you may want to call your doc. Feel better!!!
  • My random is more of a symptom??? Anyone experiencing more earwax? Gross I know but I've never had this much!
  • @kacdanz, I've kind of noticed that, too. Looks like a lot of people have asked Google if it's a pregnancy symptom, so in my unscientific opinion, it probably is.

  • I had an Ergo for my first, but I won a Tula in a giveaway and overwhelmingly prefer it. Now I have 3 Tulas. I will probably get rid of my Ergo.

I used a Solly wrap for DD's first summer (she was born early May) and loved it. I got my first ring along that winter, and a water along the following spring. Love them both! I have a woven that took so long to get I never used it with DD, but I'm going to start breaking it in so I can use it when this new one outgrows the Solly.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • @Jen_Shoes, late to respond because the holidays have sadly kept me from this board...BUT regarding potential cholestasis--it's still really early so there should be no risk to the baby. Once they run some bloodwork, they will be able to tell you if it's cholestasis. You should call your doctor anyway (you may already have, but I'm super behind on the boards!) and I'm sure they will order the bloodwork immediately just to get the ball rolling. My cholestasis was discovered at 37 weeks with my son and popped up SUPER early this go around at 20 weeks, but that is very uncommon.

  • @Kipperoo
thank you! I called my dr on Friday and the nurse seemed not worried about the poop but more cautious about the itching, and told me to tell the dr this week when we go. She said it was likely nothing as I have zero other symptoms.
