Re: Weekly Randoms (11/7)

  • I love holiday hams! I will eat turkey too, but I prefer ham. My family has several traditional sides: Stuffing, giblet gravy, yams with the crispy topping (no marshmallows), baked macaroni and cheese, regular potato salad, and green bean casserole... basically it would all give you a heart attack.

I don't eat much of that stuff, so for several years we've veered off of a few of the traditional dishes in favor of regular vegetables.

I usually contribute desserts and/or breads because I love to bake- it varies every year, I like to come up with something creative. But, my Granny's pound cake, and cream cheese squares are favorites most years. Or I have a peanut butter pie recipe, derby pie, caramel apple upside down cake....

Last year for bread I made oatmeal yeast rolls, the year before I made croissants from scratch.

  • We have our second annual pre-thanksgiving dinner this weekend with a very small part of my husbands family. It's at our house so I'm planning the menu right now. My favorite thing to make is the stuffing/dressing because growing up my mom had to make my dad a stuffing that comprised of white bread and celery and it baffled me as to why it was even a part of the meal. Then I learned what it could actually be and I love coming up with new recipes to try.
  • @LilyASF42 I'm 50% Portuguese and I never meet other Portuguese people! No real other point this post haha.
  • We are hosting Thanksgiving as my husband loves to cook and I love to host!  But I'm super disappointed about not getting to partake in holiday cocktails - we usually look through recipes and make a new one each year.  And the wine - I will miss all the wine.
one of the wines from our wine club earlier this year, we sampled at the vineyard and I remember thinking it would go so well with thanksgiving dinner, so we saved it.  you better believe I'm still having at least one glass!

lol not sure where you live but you should visit CT/RI/MA/NJ sometime.  lots of Portuguese around here!  :-)
  • @LilyASF42 MD. My dad is from MA/RI. We were just up there in August, we used go up monthly when I was little but that was only the second time I've been since my son was born in 07. Of course I see Portuguese people there haha. Down here though people seem confused that Portugal is it's own country and always ask if my family speaks Spanish and until I was in high school people used to call me Mexican.

lol yip, I've run into that before too :-)  or if you say you speak Portuguese they ask if you are brazillian.  not as much here as in other places I've travelled but still happens around here too
  • Happy anniversary @NiceyMeany!

I don't think we're even having Thanksgiving this year because my niece is having her engagement party on Black Friday.  So far,  nnobody in my family has offered to have Thanksgiving at their house.  This makes me sad cuz it's husbands 1st Thanksgiving ever.  I wanted him to experience it with the extended family.

Also,  I have no idea what I'm wearing to my niece's party. Even worse, another one of my cousin is having his wedding reception this weekend and I have nothing to wear to that,  too!! For whatever reason,  I'm not even concerned.

  • @LilyASF42

For many many years our Christmas Eve tradition was fish dinner with eggplant parmigiana. We ate with another family that we were close to we were all Italians from downstate (NYC) now living in the country. They had kids the same age and awesome grandparents and we were closer then our actual relatives.
It was always delicious and brings me the best holiday memories.
  • I looove Thanksgiving. I am all about the stuffing/dressing and the potatoes, in all forms (but no marshmallows on my sweet potatoes--I like 'em savory). I also really like cranberries. I love this bourbon-vanilla cranberry sauce, which is a nice twist on the usual flavor profiles.

  • We don't host any meals yet! But I am looking forward to all the food!!
  • Im very jealous of all your thanksgiving dinner traditions! Its not something that we celebrate here but it all sounds great!
  • I am traveling to a friends house for thanksgiving this year and I am so pumped about it. There will be a big group of us too so it means we will have EVERYTHING! Also- a local friend made me a thanksgiving dinner on Saturday and brought it over. This coming Saturday we have a big thanksgiving dinner potluck for my husbands boat, and then my other friends for actual thanksgiving. I can not explain how excited I am that I get three thanksgivings! I love stuffing, and mashed potatoes, and gravy, and turkey, sweet potatoes, pie. Omg. I'm so excited. Y'all have made me so hungry just thinking about it!

  • I am loving the Thanksgiving talk!

+1 to no instant mashed potatoes- ew!

My family does a huge Thanksgiving. The host provides a turkey, everyone else provides a side and we have way too much food ( like 30- 40 ppl...)

This year is Thanksgiving with the inlaws and my MIL does not cook. Ever. So we are either going to a diner for Tday or their friend's house and I'm going to have to leave early when my racist bullshit meter gets full. #sad.

I host Christmas, though and that  will be fun!

This will be our first Thanksgiving not in the US and you betcha I'm going out and getting all the food (or at least the food I like) and inviting friends. Only 5 or so people total but still....

  • @lfrank12 I prefer ham and don't ever eat pumpkin pie. We do lots of appetizers too and they're usually the star of the show until dessert.
  • +1 to not loving pumpkin pie - or generally anything pumpkin.  Although last year I made pumpkin creme brulees and they were delish!

@WinchesterGirl as a ftm id be interested in hearing anything people have to share about the classes. Me & my husband will be going to ante natal classes but they dont start til the last wed in nov & i have heard mixed reactions about how useful they are. My husband isnt too keen on going at all, he feels since hes been at a lot of births before now he doesnt need to go but i keep
telling him he will be there in a totally different capacity this time so needs the different perspective. & also, if i have to go he has to go!
  • @WinchesterGirl I would like that thread! We start our birthing class this Tuesday but there aren't only two sessions so I'd be interested in what else everyone is learning for some comparison.

This is going to be a big UO but I don't LOVE Thanksgiving food. I prefer ham over turkey, could take or leave stuffing, and don't like pumpkin pie. Thankfully my family makes way too much food and has appetizers before the Thanksgiving meal, so I fill up on a lot of those!
    Soulmates.
  • @homemake I think we're going to start putting up Christmas stuff this coming weekend. We'll wait to put the tree and stockings up until the day after thanksgiving, but everything else will start gradually going up effective this weekend.

  • +1 to not a fan of pumpkin pie but I do love other pumpkin-related desserts.  Pumpkin mini cakes, pumpkin coffee cake with brown sugar glaze, and pumpkin cheesecake.

My heart lies with Apple pie, though.

But how does @BumpasaurusRex feel about this?  :p
  • +1 to Pumpkin pie being a definite no go. But I am all about other fruit pies. As long as I warm them in the microwave first.

and another +1 to not liking thanksgiving food. I have never liked the food all I care about is the mashed potatoes and the desserts that I typically bring - that are not homemade by me.
  • Ok great ladies! I will start something up.

*Back to your regularly scheduled thanksgiving discussion!*
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • Yeah I don't think we'll get the tree until December but the other stuff is going up soon! I told my husband to make up for my childhood of no Christmas we're going all out for our kids.

  • my birthday is November 25th so the general rule has always been that we put up our Christmas tree and decorations on the 26th.

Im always tempted to do it earlier but considering  my H is Jewish, I wait so that's it's not overkill for him, lol.
We are in the same boat. I make dh wait until December to put up anything Christmas related because I am Jewish. I set up our Chanukah table next to the tree. This year should be fun since Chanukah starts on Christmas Eve.
