Re: Maternity clothes

  • Anybody have formal events/parties to go to this season?  I'm having a hard time finding nice enough looking maternity dresses for cocktail or formal occasions - what are you guys wearing??
  • Loading the player...
  • @MissMerciBeaucoup I bought this one for my shower on Saturday https://www.destinationmaternity.com/Product.asp?Product_Id=15472Z10022&MasterCategory_Id=MC3 and I mayyyy dress it up for H's work Christmas party as well. If not, I'll need to find something more formal
  • @srscott3 that's a really nice one, pretty and classic!!  I think it could be dressed up for a Christmas party with the right shoes/jewelry!
  • I'll pretty much wear a black bodycon / sweater dress to anything inhave to go to until I give birth.
  • I wish I felt like wearing anything bodycon right now - I just feel like a total chunk  :'(
  • @MissMerciBeaucoup I think ASOS has some really pretty maternity dresses, from casual to formal. Some is, um, hideous, but just look past those. I find the quality of ASOS clothing to vary, so I usually expect to return some things, but the things I like from ASOS always end up being things I LOVE.

  • I just put in a big order through ThredUp, haven't received my items yet.  But, they seem to have a pretty good selection of casual and dressy items.

  • @MissMerciBeaucoup I have a formal army ball in December at 34ish weeks and have ZERO clue what to do. I may check out Davids Bridal for maternity bridesmaids dresses or maybe just try to alter something I already have. I don't want to have to spend a decent amount of money on a dress size I'll likely never wear again :/ but I also want to look sharp next to DH in his dress blues so who knows
  • @yogadevil let me know what you end up getting!  I'm in sort of the same boat, as my firm's holiday party is a very formal affair and is a must go for me.  I have had some trouble, but so far I've found a couple things I like.  One is a bridesmaid dress from Two Birds which isn't actually maternity, but is one of those wrap dresses that you can wrap a million different ways and is maternity friendly.
  • i co-sign @MoonOverGoldsboro asos.com recommendation. they have a TON of forms and semi-formal dresses and an excellent return policy.

When i first got pregnant i ordered about $700 worth of stuff from asos, knowing there was no way i'd keep it all based on either fit or quality. Also agree their quality can be all over the place.

But if you have a decent amount of credit available you can purchase a few dresses and send back everything that doesn't work.

I probably sent back 3/4 of stuff. But have been really happy with what i did keep.

  • Thanks!!  ASOS looks great so far, I really like a few of their cocktail dresses and they are so inexpensive!  @krob good call on ordering a bunch and expecting to return a bunch, that's what I'm going to do and hopefully one or two work out!!
  • @MissMerciBeaucoup a friend recommended this site to me today, they have some super cute dresses too!  I haven't tried it, but she said she used it and loved everything!

  • I was looking at a dress from chi chi london on asos for my work christmas party and decided to go have a look at what else they had in their maternity section on their website & the dress was down to £30 rather than £70 on asos so i ordered it. They do free worldwide shipping so could be worth having a look at for your parties ladies.

  • So, I have a question for anyone else working in a 'business casual' office/environment.  Are you wearing maternity leggings as pants with tunics, etc.?  When I look at the selection of maternity pants, the majority of the choices are leggings.  I don't dress up a ton and wear jeans every Friday, but I'm not sure I can rock the leggings as work attire look...  Ironically, I'm a LuLaRoe consultant and love leggings SO MUCH.  Just don't know if they are really acceptable in an office.  Thoughts?

  • @MLRocha I don't wear leggings as business casual, but I strongly believe leggings are not pants.  My office leans more towards casual, but I wear a lot of skinny jeans, on days I need to dress up a little more I got a couple pairs of pants at Old Navy, grey cords and black jeans.

I really tried not to wear leggings as pants to work (we are the same business casual environment) but the maternity work pants were worse than regular work pants. I wear leggings with a tunic 2 days a week, leggings with a dress (or not leggings and a dress :O) 2 days a weeks and jeans on Friday. I think everyone understands and no one really gives me side-eye. I felt guilty wearing leggings for a while but I don't care anymore, I just want to be comfortable haha
  • I'm also in a business casual environment and my office is right in the middle of our C-level executives, so I'm not at all comfortable wearing leggings with tunics to work.  It seems like each maternity clothing company makes maybe 2 styles of maternity work pants and the rest are leggings.  I found 2 pairs on thredup and don't love either of them, but they're getting the job done and aren't too bad.  1 is from Motherhood Maternity and they would be fine if they had a little more stretch in the legs.  The other pair is Noppies and I really like them once they're on, but the belly panel is the same material as the pants so they don't go on quite as easily as the standard stretchy panel, but I do like that you can't see a stretchy panel when my shirt comes up a little too far.

  • I like to dress up the leggings and tunic look with boots and a scarf. It makes me feel a little more put together and a lot less casual!

Also, PSA: I just left Walmart and my maternity leggings I picked up were marked $10, but rang up $5!!!

Leggings are are strict NO in my workplace. Our dress code is business casual with a heavy emphasis on the business not casual. I wish I could wear some leggings under longer sweaters and tunics with boots, but unfortunately I can't. I live for the 1-2 jeans days we have each month.
  • I am lucky- our work policy is a strict no on yoga pants, but leggings are completely fine... Don't ask me why- I wore a pair of yoga pants that look like dress pants before I announced (but after my boss knew) and got told not to wear them again... my boss was pretty understanding though.

With that being said, I hate when girls wear leggings as pants at work. I wear a lot of dresses to work, and always wear leggings under them (one of our residents even told me I have such pretty legs today- I almost burst out laughing) and in a pinch I will wear leggings with a long top, but otherwise I stick with dress pants. I have some from Gap, Target, and Motherhood... The target ones are probably the most comfortable, because as others have said the Gap and Motherhood pants don't stretch much in the legs. I don't mind that now, but in a few weeks that might change.

Our work policy is pretty lax when you are pregnant, but our HR director jokingly told me our hiring motto should be: Wanna get pregnant? Come work here!   We have about a dozen women on maternity or pregnant right now... and thats not the highest that number has been.... so everyone just understands.

@yogadevil and @MissMerciBeaucoup I haven't used this myself, but if you google "rent maternity evening gowns" there are several different sites which may be a preferable option to trying to buy a formal dress. Here are a few: https://borrowforyourbump.com/  https://www.minefornine.com/  https://www.rentmaternitywear.com/

  • My school is a hard no on leggings, but IDGAF and have been wearing them anyway because is somebody really going to cry dress code on the pregnant lady?  I wear them with tunics and/or cardigans and always with ankle boots with a stacked heel or wedge OR Frye harness boots, and I still look dressier than most of my coworkers.  I also take especially good care of my hair and try to wear makeup on days when I don't wake up feeling like I'm going to die, just to balance things out.
  • I bought a few pairs of skinny work pants from Gap and Loft, and they pretty much look like leggings even though they aren't that material. So I could probably get away with them!

  • My school doesn't really have a teacher dress code beyond and I wear leggings with boots and longer/looser tops. It was yoga pants and sneakers today...  :#

Those of you looking for something more business appropriate: check out Old Navy's maternity pixies. They have low waist with subtle side panels and are pretty great. I have a feeling I may still be rocking them when I return from leave!
  • I bought the magical fleece leggings from Walmart that have been previously recommended in this thread, and let me just say: WORTH IT. They are like soft, warm hugs for my legs. I generally avoid Walmart, but the price was just too good to pass up, since I already feel like I've spent too much on maternity clothes.

  • Lol @MoonOverGoldsboro I think I used the hug analogy too. I'm wearing mine now! <3
  • I'm wearing my Walmart leggings too
  • Is anyone totally over all their maternity clothes yet?
    Yessss
  • Is anyone totally over all their maternity clothes yet?
Nope. I'm so comfy. And I have kind of a lot.
  • Is anyone totally over all their maternity clothes yet?
Once it starts to cool down, the wardrobe options will open up. Atleast for me,  more shirts and jeans. There is no harm in getting an extra shirt here and there, treat yourself.
  • I don't mind maternity clothes except it's been so fucking hot lately the extra panel is rough.

    Im so sweaty and gross.
  • I'm enjoying the clothes! But I think I also bought more than I strictly needed... My maternity work pants are WAY more comfortable than my usual ones. If the panel would stay up I'd keep on wearing these bad boys! Although, that brings me to a question - will these pants still work post birth when I've still got a small leftover bump?
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • @WinchesterGirl I had some bottoms that would still fit and others that wouldn't. It really depended on how tight the panel was. Plus with a full panel you can fold them into a half panel and that should help them stay up.
  • @WinchesterGirl I kept wearing my under the bump style Gap work pants. Might as well get more use out of them right?
But sadly my post baby bump wasn't that small!

  • For the magical Walmart leggings, do they work for tall people? I'm 5'11" and usually buy 34" inseam pants. I know some leggings stretch in length, but some a would just be capris on me.

  • Totally jumped on the LuLa Roe bandwagon tonight...I didn't understand the hype before but after trying on a pair of the leggings tonight at a coworker's party I was hooked. I bought 4 pair of leggings and 3 shirts that I know I will be wearing out the rest of this pregnancy and during my maternity leave afterwards.
  • Oh I had the two birds dress as my bridesmaids dresses and loveeee them!  They are so flattering!  I really want to steal my friends and wear it to my baby shower - it's a light pink.

I do wear Blanqi leggings & a tunic & boots to work 1-2x a week in a very corporate environment.  Destination maternity sells a 'bodycon' dress for like $30 but you can get on sale that is also a staple over the leggings.  It's so comfortable, love it.  Thin arm material that works well under a blazer.
