Re: Pregnancy Chatter and Questions - Week of 10/17

  • Is anyone else having any lower back pain?  Its minor but freaks me out a little because it reminds me of getting my period.  It just started today (5w+2) along with extreme bouts of tiredness and a little more cramping than the last few days.  I'm normally a pretty chill gal but man it's a long wait to get to that US appt.... tick tock tick tock

I had slight back pain and not to many cramps. I was also counting the seconds until my US which is not until November 8th and ended up calling the doc to leave a message yesterday but I ended up crying to the lady on the phone who made me and early pregnancy questions appointment which really eased my mind.

  • @berg - I have been having back and leg pain pretty regularly. I honestly can't remember if I had it last time, though.

I scheduled my appointment for 11/15 and set up a countdown for it on my phone :) I have been using a 6/25 EDD because that was what FF said but when I put my LMP in other calculators it says 6/27. O was on CD13. Not a big deal but I WANNA KNOW!!
I mean, the two day difference really doesn't matter- it could be two weeks after either of those dates.

  • So I started spotting today (brown blood) and I'm a little crampy, I'm not sure if I should wait it out or call.  The other thing that factors in is that I'm Rh Negative and when I've spotted with my other pregnancies I required a Rhogam shot.  Ugh.  This blows.
  • @Assiram42 I would call then. No need for extra stress.

All the perfume/cologne/cigarette smokers are killing me today. I can't deal.

  • @Assiram42 - every ob is different, but if you're earlier than 8 weeks, I think you may be able to avoid the Rhogam (theory being that it's simply too early for there to be any blood mixing). Rh Neg here too, clearly!

  • @c1tym0m22, you're probably right.

I called the nurse triage line and I'll just let them decide if I should come in or not.  Waiting to hear back. :/
  • Anyone else not using the bathroom as frequently as you should? I feel like I still use the bathroom just as many time as when I wasn't pregnant, but everything I read says by x week you may notice an increase in bathroom trips. I just don't need another thing to worry about

  • The past two days I have felt totally normal except for sore boobs. I don't feel pregnant at all. I am just about six weeks though and terrified that morning sickness will start any minute!
  • @berg I started having lower back pain right at the 5 week mark. It was difficult for me to bend over and pick things up and would get worse when I tightened my abdominal muscles. I did some googling though and learned that this is a very common symptom in early pregnancy and throughout. I'm now 7 weeks and the pain has subsided drastically. Hang in there!

Question: I can get a bikini wax right? I'm a regular every 6 weeks waxer and just realized my next appointment is on Friday...

  • @loopstation104 I'm there with you!  there is a guys who sits next to me at work that smokes and either doesn't bathe everyday or wash his clothes because he has this nasty BO and then tops it off with cigarette smoke.  I have a bunch of air fresheners in the office now and keep the window open whenever possible.  So gross!
  • @amberp1528 - sore boobs is my only symptom too. I feel like I always wake up and they're minimally painful but as the day goes on they get worse. But I'm using that as my "sign" too.

i have been POAS to follow progression since no betas. Today at 17 dpo it equaled the control line on my wondfo. Guess that should be my sign to stop. I wish I could keep testing til my sono!!

  • Has anyone gone to an "ultrasound boutique" for a gender reveal ultrasound? i just learned about this option today and found a location near me. For $70 they will do an ultrasound and let you know the gender at 15+ weeks and you can make a complimentary second appointment if baby is uncooperative for the first try.
  • @annalhaller a friend of mine did this last year and was told the wrong sex of the baby. She had a gender reveal party and sent out Christmas cards saying it was a boy. She works in the hospital and had another ultrasound tech ask if she could show her student how to do an ultrasound. Well, the ultrasound tech at the hospital said "your girl has beautiful bones" in which my friend replied "girl?". Yep, the boutique was totally wrong. She was having a girl.
  • Oh goodness! Thanks for the input @NurseSHS13 Maybe this is why I have never heard of these before!! I was a bit skeptical but do think it sounds interesting.
  • I posted something similar on the 2+ kiddo thread...

My previous MFM/Perinatalogist's office does what you could call boutique or non-medically necessary u/s.

I'm considering doing that as a way to tell my boys about being pregnant and it wouldn't hurt to get to find out the sex early... I'd rather have a later anatomy scan to ensure everything is developed enough (at least 20w).

The minimum option is $90 and you get images emailed, 10 minutes of u/s, and complementary MFM consult if they find any abnormalities.  They do video and longer sessions... it just costs more.
  • @annalhaller I did it with my daughter. It was cute. I don't think I will need it this time. I will find out at 10 weeks with all of the other genetic testing. I remember being kind of stressed afterwards though because the tech was a little rougher then I expected and it kind of freaked me out. It was fine though.

Anyone actually starting to lose some of the really early pregnancy bloating?

Also, I don't really have morning sickness, but I am super sensitive to smells and they make me gag. I have a little bit of evening sickness.

Tomorrow is is my first ultrasound. Wish me luck!!

  • Speaking of wrong gender ultrasounds, the doctor was wrong about our friend's baby. They thought they were having a boy. It was a girl!

  • @sevenn I feel ya. That was my first symptom that made wonder if I was KU'd. I noticed it's tempered off a little now but comes back enough to make me wonder if I started bleeding as well. Hang in there and take it as a good sign that things are happening!
  • @wifeinraleigh28 you're totally okay to keep up with your waxing. :)
  • Anyone else have a lull in symptoms right around 5 weeks? Cramping is gone, no MS yet - perhaps I should just enjoy it instead of being anxious about it  :#

  • @annalhaller, last I checked several of the major medical organizations had taken a strong stance against in and all unnecessary u/s. The actual u/s may be harmful and should only be used when the benefit outweighs the risk.

  • I am a little annoyed... why would the bump send me a notification on my phone for their article on miscarriage symptoms and signs?

Seems pretty insensitive... they collect so much data on us, they know we are pregnant...

Also, after reading it... all it said was here are a bunch of symptoms but they could also be normal pregnancy symtpoms.  What is the value in that post/article?
  • c1tym0m22  if it wasn't for my constipation and insomnia (I wake up at the stroke of 345 every night and can't fall back asleep until 430, and then my alarm goes off at 445 so it's a whole thing), I would forget I was pregnant until such time as I went to get some wine with my dinner and realized that I couldn't.  The days that I actually poop I feel completely normal.  I'm 5w6d now.  But it was like this with DD as well.  I didn't have boob soreness until 7 weeks and never had nausea at all.

I'm with @BelhurstBride on the medically unnecessary ultrasounds.  The reason you get ultrasounds from your doctor is that they know your specific risk profile and are able to weigh that against the risk of having an ultrasound.  Boutique places just want to make money.  Additionally, the techs there are not specifically trained on pregnancy ultrasound, so not only could they be inaccurate on the sex, but if they find what they think might be an issue, they can't tell you anything conclusive and you just wind up freaking out until your doctor can see you.  At which point, your doctor will order ANOTHER ultrasound, which might have been unnecessary all along, because whatever the boutique tech thought he saw may not have even been a problem.

I know it's annoying to wait 18-20 weeks for an anatomy scan to get the sex of the baby, but seriously, we're taking about an extra month, at most, past when a boutique place will do this for you.  If you can't wait an extra month for this information, which is ultimately unimportant (seriously, the health of the baby is really all that is truly important), you are going to be in for some trouble when you are actually raising a baby.  Patience is a virtue.  I was dying to know with DD but I waited for my AS.  I will wait for the AS again this time.

I wound up having 6 ultrasounds for my low risk pregnancy last time.  8w for dating, 12w for NT scan, 18w for anatomy scan, 26w because my fundal measurement was 3 weeks ahead (at which point they determined it was just because DD was breech and all balled up in there), and 36w to make sure she had flipped and was head down - that one literally took all of 3 minutes.  And then I had another very brief one at 38w because my blood pressure was starting to elevate, so they wanted to check the placental health along with a NST.  And I think probably two of those (the 26w and 36w ones) were unnecessary, but the doctor wanted me to have them, so I did.

I'm sorry.  Things like that strike chords with me.

just one of the many reasons the bump is referred to as 'the dump'.

  • I have my 6 week U/S booked for next Friday the 28th (they saw two sacs this past monday). When I called the doctors office the nice nurse that I speak to all the time asked me how to progesterone was going (my levels on last friday were 24,211hcg & progesterone 7.6). I told her I've been taking it but I'm still spotting and I asked if I should take another blood test next week to see if my levels went up. She didn't seem to concerned and said "I could if I wanted to"... shouldn't I know if the suppositories are working and if my hcg is still going up? I might be acting a little crazy but considering the rocky start we had, I think I have the right to sound worried. I went from being told I was having a miscarriage last week to having twins this week!! gah!!

  • I do not want to be at work tonight. I feel so nauseated and tired. On the other hand, I have a 2.5 year old at home with diarrhea, so, maybe work is better? But its DH's birthday and I feel a bit bummed leaving him alone with a pooping toddler. He's been so good to me this first trimester! And his present got delayed shipping. Ok, whining over.

So if you're talking about screening testing, and not diagnostic testing (e.g. CVS), these tests are performed to identify those at higher risk. They provide expectant parents with information so they can decide if if they want to proceed with more invasive diagnostic testing. A "positive" screening test just means based on the criteria the baby is at higher risk for the genetic condition, but that's often still "low" such as a 1 in 200 chance of actually having a trisomy or whatever the case may be. Sorry if this is not what you're talking about, I've seen tons and tons of people in my time on TB that did not make that distinction.
