  • Does anyone wear a fetal radio dosimeter for work? So far I've just clipped in on my belt (has to be near the belt button), but I can see as maternity pants work their way in that may be an issue.

    A what??
  • @Gingersnap - it's a radiation detection badge, with a low limit, for fetal exposure. I work with very minutely radioactive substances and am part of the team that works with the particle accelerator on campus.

I understood like 10 words of that. Carry on ;-)
  • @peachesnbean I've never dealt with one before, so I'm not really helpful, but is it small/light enough that you could wear it on a long lanyard (like a badge)?  If not, I'm wondering if there would be a way to attach it something else that's belt-like, but stretchy/comfy/stable enough to wear over your maternity pants without having to actually attach it to your pants.

  • @silvercamaro77 I would have to get a long lanyard, but maybe I could do the belt thing. It's like a beeper, but half the size id say.

  • @grapeskittles4lyfe that is awesome! I only get one week paid maternity leave. I will of course get up the mandated 6 weeks off plus whatever vacation I have saved (which is zero..) My husband however gets up to 12 weeks paid paternity leave through the city though. So I'll go back to work at 6 weeks and then he will take probably a month off to take care of the new babe.

Any one else have super sh*tty maternity leave?

  • @peachesnbeanYour campus has a particular accelerator?! That's so cool!!! Is it big enough to collide particles?? Cuz that's what I'd be trying to do with it.

I have so many questions. Is it electrostatic or electromagnetic? What do you do for a living? Is this for like medical diagnostics, particle physics?? I'm so curious!!

  • @scifichick09 - I honestly know very little about the Physics being done and studied. I am the bio-med tech so I take biomedical samples (urine, tissue, blood, etc) and extract the calcium and carbon for the rare:stable isotope to be measured. I do the chemistry, load the cathodes, and send them down stairs to the accelerator. I don't think we do any colliding and I believe it is magnetic. I will PM you my lab link. :)

  • Do we address this or bump it down again? Quick before I do something dumb.
  • @MrsP052909 I can take up to 12 weeks off but none are technically "paid mat leave". I have to use vacation and sick time if I want to get paid 100% (but only as much time as I have available) and beside that it's short term disability paid at only 75%. And I can only take short term disability in the first 6 weeks. It's all really confusing. :(

I fucking addressed it. What a bish.
I did too when it stayed at the top. I had to do it. Warn me, ban me, I don't care. If I come back as an AE my code word is hippopotamus.
I think I need to plan for this too. I am so upset right now.

I think you're safe. My post and maybe Ginger's may be warnable but probably not instabannable. Then again it could go unnoticed if nobody ever reports it.
  • They usually at least warn first, no?

@Janefelicity I know! 6 weeks pre-birth at full pay, 4 weeks post-birth at full pay, and then the first year mat leave paid, with another two years unpaid but they hold your job. Also a midwife who will come by as much as you need to visit you at home for 8 weeks post birth, up to a year if your Dr.
This makes me so mad!! I love America but this whole maternity leave thing really pisses me off to no end.  I just hate it.  Like WTF? America makes it seem like pushing a human out of your vagina and then taking care of it is no big deal.  I mean, you guys get leave BEFORE the baby is born, toooooo?
Yup. It's called "mother's protection" (the pay period before the birth). Health insurance pays for it, not your employer. I mean, I'm not going to take the full year this time around (because, there's a lot to do) but since most moms do take the full year if I approach my employer with part-time plans until LO is 1 I am pretty sure they're going to jump at the offer.

  • @MrsP052909 @becbec28  I work at a company that falls under FMLA so I can take off up to 12 weeks.  Of those 12 weeks, I'll have 6 weeks that fall under STD, but there's a 4 week elimination period, so STD will only pay out for 2 weeks and it pays out at 60%.  Company policy mandates that you have to use up all PTO first, so those first 4 weeks will take up every drop of vacation and sick time I have for the whole 2017 year.  We're on a calendar year use-it-or-lose-it vacation policy, so no way to bank anything up.  The plus side is that I won't have any weeks at 0 pay and it's significantly better than not having any time off.

  • I too am having trouble containing my fury. What the heck, lady?
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • You're a broken human being to come back and defend something like that.
  • Ugh let's try to push it off the page again. At this point, I don't want to dignify this kind of behavior with a 3rd response.
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • I feel like she may come back again. Not sure though.
  • You are probably right.
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • I would leave it alone at this point if I were her. I she hope she does.

I just don't understand the level of sympathy she wanted. Everyone was kind and she still complained, twice. I don't even know who she is. Has she offered support to anyone?

The entitlement she feels seems even stronger than her disappointment. I wrote a second response but I haven't posted it. I don't think it's worth it at the moment.

Edit I did post. After reading another response I felt it was necessary. I will refrain in the future.

  • @srscott3 ^^ definitely!
