  • @diagonalley I won't keep keys out. I'm too paranoid for that. But even if I wasn't... there's another absurdity to mention. When we moved in the owners didn't provide ALL the keys to the doors. They'd rented the house out the last few years and the previous tenants had moved out and not returned any of the keys, so they only had keys to the front door and garage door to give us. We found this out during closing, when they were handing us over the keys AFTER we'd already requested all the fixes, so we weren't able to require that the owners rekey the doors before we moved in.

We didn't rekey right away because we had front door keys and garage door keys. We're not going in and out of the back door (which has no key), so no big, right?

But wait! The solid storm door covering the front door also doesn't have a key. Guess who thought the front door lock and the storm door lock used the same key?! So even if we had one of our keys hidden, it wouldn't have worked on the broken door, or the back door, OR the storm door that's blocking access to the front door.

Our fault for not rekeying every door right when we moved in, but we thought it was an expense we could put off until later. APPARENTLY NOT.

  • @Bibliobebe I felt the same way when I bought a house. The stuff that was wrong wasn't big enough to be on the inspection but we have had quite a few issues over the last 4 years. It also seems that the previous owners did a lot of (incorrect) DIY, which has caused us problems too

@kosmo86 "Incorrect DIY" is the exact perfect term. That's mostly what's causing us the most trouble right now too. Lots of "I know a guy" fixes to save money that end up being the equivalent of slapping a bandaid on it.

@mom2adoodle Congrats on your going home day! You've both got a big adventure ahead of you!

Add me to the club of previous homeowners did poor diy . The woman even came to the house to do a walk through after closing a day proudly pointed out all of the work she had done herself... which all looked great but wasn't quality work. For example a master bath redo but didn't use moisture resistant sheet rock so when the ceiling fan went out the walls started to peel. Yay.

As ready as I am to get this baby out, I am also thinking about the fact that I only have 22 more days of feeling baby kicks ever. Ugh pregnancy hormones.
This exactly. I don't know for sure if I'm done, but there's a good chance this is it and I keep getting all emotional about the fact that I may never get to experience this again. I can only imagine my emotions once the baby is actually here and growing before my eyes, and I'm thinking about never getting that time back again.
Anyone else feel like they should feel this way but don't?  I'm not positive this is my last pregnancy but that is most likely the case.  I loved being pregnant with DD and hoped for a similar experience this time around.  That has not been the case.  Granted, I have nothing to truly complain about and have had it fairly easy in the grand scheme of things but it's definitely wearing on me more (physically and mentally) this time.  I am so impatient for baby to just be here already.  I try so hard to remind myself that there are really only a few weeks left (a month at most) and to focus on the positive, let baby bake and enjoy it while it lasts.  But I haven't been very successful in following my own advice.  Meanwhile, the more impatient I get, the more guilty I feel for not enjoying things more which makes me more impatient and the cycle continues.  And I worry that when it all really is over and baby is here, I'm going to look back a and feel even guiltier for not enjoying these last few weeks.  Anyone else?

  • @Bibliobebe oh my god, SAME!! My freaking husband, love him, but sometimes he does things without thinking about the long term. I had changed all the locks when we bought our house and we had one matching door knob and deadbolt left so I put it on the door that leads into the laundry room from the garage. I ended up locking it one day and left through the front door for some reason. I TOLD H the day I changed the knobs that "this key that I'm giving you for the front door also matches the garage door." And I out it on his effing key ring. Of course, he didn't listen. Actually, he listened so badly that he didn't even know he had a damn key at all. To either door. So he went out the front door, locked the handle before he closed it, and then realized he needed back in so he opened the garage with the code. He goes to the door and finds it locked, and is pissed because it's 100 degrees outside and he apparently doesn't have a key, (he freaking does!!!!!) so he kicks the door in. We will have to replace the entire door jamb. Jamb....jamb? Anypoop, it's been like that for like 4 years now and I hate it because if our garage door randomly opens, anyone can get in our house. I was so pissed, and honestly, I still am because I have no idea how much it will cost to fix that.
  • Re bad DIY projects, I cannot even begin to tell you about how many crappy projects the prior owners of my house did. I'm so lucky to have a handy husband but we've only been in the house a year and haven't even scraped the surface of all the crap that needs to be done. Luckily, it's mostly cosmetic but it's baaaaad cosmetic.

  • @jennm205 I have a friend who is pregnant and is for sure on her last one. She hates every single thing about pregnancy and is definitely looking forward to being done with this stage forever. I don't think everybody has to enjoy it.
  • @frogdog06 good luck!!!

@PSUBecky23 I just don't understand when people try to sell houses like that. It's so shady. DH and I are working on our rental house to sell and I made list of everything that needed to be done before we put it on the market, because I just can't sell someone something where they are going to find things that need fixed. I wouldn't feel right about it.
  • Good luck, @frogdog06! What a surprise!  I can't wait to meet your LO!

  • @JennM205 This will be my last one and I won't miss being pregnant at all. Terrible morning sickness for 5+months, crazy heartburn, constant full back and tailbone pain...yep won't miss it. Incredibly grateful to have been able to get pregnant twice very easily and have relatively easy pregnancies, but I'm ready for the next 3 weeks to fly by.

In our case, I think some of the prior owners just had no clue. I mean, the master bathroom is navy blue with gray trim and ceiling and the powder room was dark purple; and none of the light fixtures match, and the patio slopes in various directions, and and. So luckily for us, it's been small things so far but it adds up.

  • Add me to the list of folks with a Inccorrect DIY house. Seriously, our house is full of questionable decisions. Instead of removing wallpaper, the previous owners thought it'd be a good idea to slap up some RV trailer wall paneling instead. Not kidding! Just let that sink in. Plasticky/cardboarding RV trailer wall paneling. In 1/3d of our home... We also have legit 70s panelling in one room, but we'll be removing that and re-doing the drywall (if necessary) this winter. Our house is FULL of shitty DIY projects - crooked doorways, foam (yes foam!) trim, crooked stick on tiles, mismatching kitchen cabinets, the list goes on forever.

DH bought the house 10 years ago with his former GF. Let's just say had I been around we never would have purchased it. I seriously consider lighting a match on a daily basis. We're currently trying to get it somewhat presentable so we can just buy a new house. DH is actually really handy and does a quality job when he DIYs, but I don't really want to dump tons of money into a house that is too small and not in the right neighborhood anyway.

And sorry @drmh22 - we'll definitely be selling our house with tons of fixes necessary. I'm not going to spend my money and time on finishes, updates, and work that the next owners might not even like.... Our issues are pretty much all cosmetic (minus the siding, but really anyone with eyes can tell the siding needs to be replaced within the next 5 years), so it's not like it'd be a safety hazard for a family to move in and decide to tackle those changes at their own pace. Any buyer can see the issues in plain sight and decide whether or not they want to do that work themselves!

That is how the previous owners of our house were, but add in trying to do it your self while being drunks. We have been here 3 years and I h e done a lot of work on it with so much more to do. Our laundry room at this point is still bright blue and bright yellow. All the windows are painted and he'd to open because they never opened them. The washer is on its last leg but the door isn't big enough to get it out....

@camichael84 e and I had a successful trip earlier, didn't even  bust out a dum-dum. One of the items I needed was wrapping paper and holding that big tube (and bopping me with it) made him beyond happy. With him I power walk through the place and buy little or nothing extra... actually I'm trying to be good money wise and probably shouldn't go. We will see what energy I have after groceries

Another "hubby kicked the door in" story here. I accidentally locked him out when I was putting LO down for a nap one time. He rang the doorbell but I couldn't hear it. He says he thought something had happened to us so he busted the door down. Days before we left on vacation. And there was a window in the door--would have been much easier to break that and reach through to unlock the deadbolt. But no. Door down. Jamb ruined. Entirely new door required. And it was not cheap be cheap we live in an old house and the size wasn't standard. Wheeeee!

After that, we hid a spare key in our detached garage. I accidentally locked him out again and thankfully heard the doorbell, but it didn't even cross his mind to get and use the spare key. Come on, man!
You could get the door lock where you type in a code to get in. We got these as I tend to lock people out all the time.
  • Totally considered that, @asht ! But the door replacement was pricey enough, I decided he could remember that we have a spare key. ;) I may have decided wrong.
  • @Alyeena I can only imagine the death stare that your DH woke to that day!  Lol...

@UnwritteN12 Yay babies! Congratulations!  They are so cute, hope everything went well, looking forward to more baby pics. I have been thinking about you all today and checking TB way more than I should have.
  • @AnnaS930 Target trip ended up not being as glorious as I'd hoped. McKenna was great. She didn't get the dum-dum until we were towards the end of shopping, and only got it because she's Houdini and gets herself unstrapped from the cart.

However, I didn't get half the things I had on my list. They didn't carry some of what I needed and was out of others. I did get Starbucks to drink while we shopped, and saw more of the Cat and Jack line. I seriously want to buy McKenna everything they have!

  • @UnwritteN12 Your twins are ADORABLE!! Congratulations!!
  • yay! Sept 16 has TWINS now!! Congrats @UnwritteN12 - Can't wait to hear your further details!
  • @mom2adoodle yay I'm so happy that Fin is doing so well!! How exciting that he gets to come home! I love today.

As far as house things that need fixing.. We realized last night that our dishwasher was never really installed... It's hooked up to the water but basically just hanging out under the counter unattached, which means that it shifts around super easily and can't be closed all the way (i.e. Can't use it!) if the weight isn't distributed perfectly. The previous owners were in here for 8 years before us, and they never saw this as a problem?!??
  • @UnwritteN12 They are beautiful! Congrats and enjoy all the baby snuggles!

  • @UnwritteN12 just read your birth announcement. Glad you are all doing well. Oliver and Josephine are perfect!!
  • Yay @UnwritteN12 !!! Love the pictures, they are so precious and squishy!

  • Ahhh! @UnwritteN12 they are beautiful!

I'm also living in someone else's DIY mess. The guys who owned our house before us really tried, but they just weren't too great at it. My favorite is a drawer next to the dishwasher that can only be opened if the dishwasher door is open!
