@littlebirdie28- First off, great name choice ;-) I'm an Allison with two L's. My mom said that she went with "Allison" rather than "Alison" in case I wanted to use a nickname. She thought that "Alli" or "Allie" looked like a girl's name while "Ali" looked like a boy's name. She ended up being spot on in my experience. All of the Ali's that I have known have been men, with the exception of one woman (whose full name was Alistar, not Alison).

And even if you plan on using her full name, kids sometimes get their own ideas. I was "Allison" until I was five when I demanded to be called "Alli." So Mom was smart to consider the nickname possibility.

Edit: Got rid of some funky wording.

  • We're getting close to our boy name. Colby or Luke. I'm leaning toward Colby.

But I'm having a hard name with middle names. It has to start with an A. I've gone through tons of lists and there's very few FI and I agree on.

We both like Andrew. But it's FILs name and FIs middle name. Then I worry we'd have to name future kids after family, too. Also like Austin, but feel like it's kinda cheesy since we've lived in Texas the last year.

Now I'm waiting for them to tell us it's actually a girl at our A/S next week =\
  • @tinattt23 if you like Andrew, go with it. We have names picked out for both boy and girl. Our boy name has the middle name Maurice, which is DHs middle name and FILs first name. Our girl name has no family references.
Try not to feel pressure of "because I did it for one I have to for the other"
Another example would be my brother, who has the same middle name that my dad does, but I have no family references in my name.
FWIW I think Colby Andrew is a really cute name :)
  • Unless I take one look at my baby and believe the names are all wrong, here's what we have:

Eaton David if it's a boy. Eaton is my grandmother's maiden name and David is my husband's name which is also a middle name for him. Unlike my husband though, he'll go by his first name.

Lola Elizabeth if it's a girl. Lola is my grandmother's beloved mother whom I never met but have heard about all my life. Lenola is my MIL's (also deceased) middle name. So it has the pleasure of playing off both names and honoring both sides of the family same as our boy name. Elizabeth is mine and my grandmother's middle name, as I was named for her.

My grandparents raised me and my grandmother took on a mothering role for me and I treasure my relationship with her as the most positive and healthy in my life. It will be fun to honor her regardless of the gender of the baby. My husband and I love using family names as well.

  • @caseyewhitaker I really love Eaton! It's one I've never heard before yet still sounds like a familiar name somehow.

DD is Lilianna. (Lily-anna NOT lily-ahna)

(Names for Twins of unknown gender)

Would "Johannah' be too close to that for one of the twins names? Legitimately wondering.
I like Johanna spelling better but I feel like that's really too close....

  • @Toller02 how is Johanna(h) pronounced? If Lilianna is Lily-Anna, would it be Jo-Anna, or do you mean the H to sound like Jo-Hahn-uh? If it's the former, it's pretty close IMO but I do like it. If it's the latter, it's varied enough that it would work IMO. ;)

Right now we are between Savannah (my pick) and gracelyn (DH's pick). But Gracelyn sounds a little made up to me and I'm not in love with Savannah either. Any suggestions from these names?

@kbduke I'm reading a book set in old Ireland and the character's name is Gracelin- so not made up :) and I like it!

  • @kbduke I like Gracelyn. I'd probably end it with two N's, but I'm a fan of all girls names that end in Lynn.
  • I commented already but I came back for suggestions.
this baby will be Ophelia. Our last name is three syllables and starts and ends with an A. Almost all the names I like end in an A, so I'm having trouble coming up with a middle name that doesn't.
bevause of the abundance of vowels in Ophelia A-----a and because of the length of the first and last names I want to find a middle name that is #1 short and #2 starts and ends in consanants.
Our only idea so far is Ophelia Lark, which I like but I'm not 100% sold on.
    Any other suggestions?

  • I have had some name problems with my fiancé's family.  We are having a girl so we only have to concentrate on one gender.  We had a name already picked out...Ella Rose...but my fiancé's Spanish speaking family pointed out that ella is the pronoun she in Spanish.  Now, I had pointed that out to my fiancé weeks before, but he said it was no problem.  When his family pointed it out it became a problem.  Same with out other choice...Elyse.  I brought up that it sounded like his niece Alyssa.  He said he didn't think it was close at all.  And then when he shared that name, his sister said it was too close to Alyssa and we shouldn't use it.  So now it is a problem. I'm starting to think we shouldn't share our ideas anymore or we might never find a name.  This has happened with three other names.  We find a name we actually agree on, which is very hard, and instead of his family just saying like or don't like, they give a detailed, sometimes hurtful, opinion.  Like one was a cow's name (Luna), one made it sound like we wanted her to get made fun of (Iris), etc.  You get the picture.  Part of me wonders if they were serious when they told me they were going to name.  The only good part of this is that my fiancé is back to Ella Rose as a first choice, which has been my favorite since before we were pregnant.
  • @caffeinenut I'm sorry to hear that your family is saying hurtful things towards your name choices. That sounds like a very tough situation to be in. For that reason DH and I decided not to tell anyone until our little girl is here, which for me is VERY hard because I want to share with family and friends our excitement and have them feel like they have a connection with the baby already.
  • We have a boys name that we will probably recycle for the next one: Maddox Lee.

For a girls name we have decided we like Emmaline. However we can't decide if we want a middle name, and agree on one if we go that route.
Can you lovely ladies help me out with some names that work well with Emmaline?

I'm assuming you'll be using the typical pronunciation of Ella?  If so, it sounds nothing like the pronoun, they just happen to share a spelling.

DH and I are pretty close to choosing our name, and for this exact reason we've decided not to share our name. People seem to be okay with saying negative things about a hypothetical name, but are a lot less likely to say anything once there's a real baby to go along with it. At the end of the day, you guys should go with he name you love!
  • @caffeinenut Why not have an English and Spanish version?
Or, maybe have the name make sense in Spanish, but have a cute nn in English? Example: Estrella, means star but could easily -in my mind - be nn Ella.

  • @caffeinenut - we're not sharing our name until baby is here.  We've directly told some people we're not telling (like family who keeps asking) and tell random people who ask something vague like "well we have a few ideas but we're not going to decide until he's here".

@Kate08Young Thanks for the suggestions, but I am actually anti-nickname. The only hardfast rule for us coming up with a name is no nicknames.  And nothing super popular.  Otherwise, I'm open to anything.  My fiancé says no strictly Spanish names.  His name is David and everyone uses the English pronunciation, even his family.

@KatBH Yeah, the English pronunciation, like Ella Fitzgerald.  I think it is more likely his family likes to criticize everything.  And they like to decide everything by committee.  When we first told them we were pregnant, they said if it was a girl they had a name already picked out for her...Maria Isabelle.  To which I said, we already had a name, Ella Rose.  And then the discussion began, even though I said clearly Ella was our name.  His family is a bit too pushy for me, so I tend to hang back and be quiet when we get together.

  • @penelope4612 I wish we had done that now.  But since I asked my sister and mom what they thought, I couldn't tell him he couldn't ask his family.  The difference...my family just said whether they liked a name or not.  There was no commenting, just a like or no like, or they said they liked Elyse better than Iris...etc.  No negativity.
  • @caffeinenut - you can always change your tune now!  Just tell your family and his family that you've decided to keep the final decision to yourselves so it's a surprise.  Families can be so frustrating with stuff like this (when my mother was upset bc we weren't telling the name, my brother told her he remembered me mentioning Henry and she said "Well I don't like Henry.  I guess I'll call him Hank."  Sorry, that's why you don't get to know.)

FWIW, we're not using Henry (and not bc of that comment).
  • Hi all! What do you think of the name Lyra for a girl? I think it's  cool, strong, and feminine. H thinks it's a little too unusual and out there. I don't want a name everyone, like her friends, teachers, and employers think is weird so I'd love your honest opinions!

I like it. It's unusual without being odd. I went to school with a girl who named her daughter Lyla, which I've always liked as well.

I don't like Lyra. I'm pretty picky though when it comes to "different names". I do like Lyla a lot.
  • @Kate87, I like Lyra...I don't really think of it as being too "out there" fwiw

    @LoveBugBites, maybe Ophelia Rose?

@tinattt23, though you shouldn't feel like you have to carry on using family members' names for future children, I totally understand the concern.  My first two sons MN come from my family.  Now with DS3, I feel like I do have to to use my husband's family names in some way, even though my DH has assured me multiple times that I do not and that neither he nor his family will care.

I adore Lyra! It reminds me of Lyra Belacqua from the His Dark Materials book trilogy (Golden Compass, etc.). She is a fearless, smart, and badass protagonist. That would be an excellent girl name!

  • @silverfrost Yes, I love those books! I also really like the mythological implication behind the name (and the character's); Apollo's lyre, the constellation, a figure so charming she can make even the Hades show mercy, etc. Thank you everyone for feedback, I really appreciate it!

@dmontgo I really like Mavis Rose, it has such a nice rhythm to it...

@swhiddon33  Wren is one of my favorite names! I think it would make a lovely middle name for @lovebugbites Ophelia
  • @Kate87 I really like Lyra, I have a friend named Valeria who goes by Lera and I've always thought her name was so pretty. I think her mom is from Russia, so it ties into her mom's heritage. :)
  • I find out the 15th what team I'm on. Names so far  Marek Leopold or Corbin Sterling for a boy.
Gwendolyn Monet for a girl. I love the name Lucille for a middle name but I can't find anything to go with it as a first. Our last name starts with a "V" so it gets tricky.
  • So we've been thinking about this name for baby boy:

    Ashton Knox

Thoughts? Boy names are hard. I also like Emerson and Kieran, but not sure what order they would go in. Bleh.

@Diamond0323 one of my best friends top girl name was Lucille but her hubs was just not on board with it as a first name. It's a family name, and also her middle name, so they went with Anna Lucille. My friends name is Amy Lucille.

Eta @dmontgo congrats on baby boy! I like Ashton but think your alternate names are awesome. I think if I were in your shoes I would lean towards Kieran Emerson because it's a little more unique, but that's just my 2 cents.

  • Ok, from my long list I've narrowed down my personal favorites to...

    Della Jane McCay Last Name
(Della Jane is the first name)
    or
    Phinehas Craig Noel Last Name
(Phinehas is the first name with a double middle name)

I'm still fluctuating with the preferred spelling over biblical/traditional spelling of Phinehas... The extra/silent "h" seems superfluous, but I am drawn toward the original/biblical spelling... Thoughts?

And about Della Jane... Our oldests name is Adelynn, and goes by Addie... Do you think that's too similar. Technically, Della comes from the same name and has the same meaning. But do you think the double name Della Jane is different enough that it will be uniquely their own?
One of our big goals is that all our kids name are very different from the others, we even avoid same first letters as the others have...

Due December 27th with baby #7

  • @ajstevenson Thank you!

DH nixed Kieran just now, but we both really like Ashton. I suggested Knox Emerson, but he liked Ashton Knox better. Still deciding....>.>'

@maamawaabangi Della Jane is definitely different from Addie , imo.

I like both the biblical and modern way of spelling it, but lean more towards Phineas myself.
  • @dmontgo Love that name. We are considering Levi Knox if the next baby is a boy, too. :)
