ive been lurking for a wile now (edd 29 jan & sure im going to run into feb) and have to say that i LOVE the snark of this board & feel more at home here than the j17 board but was hanging back from participating cause i kinda feel i fall into the "you dont even go here" category.
keep up the good work ladies
You can come play!! I will say it SUUUUCKS being at the end of your BMB cause you start to feel like you are the only one left. So if you get comfy here you will be early. So stay, play, and snark with us.
It does suck being at the end. But this BMB is awesome and I'm staying. Any lurkers who want a little more flavor in their lives are welcome to hop on over.
I'm at the end of this one too!! I feel like there are a lot of people at the end tho.
yeah, i was definitely one of those who had a glass of wine or a beer every day. Although I've been lucky and haven't craved it too much since getting pregnant. In fact, about 5 days before my BFP I was 3/4 of the way through a beer and just lost taste for it. Out of now where. It was very weird, but it was the last beer I had before getting my positive test.

Me: 31+ H: 32 TTC Since 11/2015 #1 - MMC 6.5 weeks (2/16); #2 - MC due to cystic hygroma at 20 weeks (10/16); #3 CP (2/17); #4 - Due 12.16.17
@mjsommer I'd love to hear what you didn't care for using other bottle tops. That's one of the things I really liked about it. Both kids before preferred tommee tippee but their pump and go set is a lot more expensive. The bag issue and serving sizes isn't a big deal for me. Until we figure out how much baby typically takes per session I usually freeze in 2 and 3 oz increments. It takes more bags but that's true regardless of what bags I'm using. I'm with you on bottle warmers. We've had two kids and never owned one nor have we missed it.
This board does seem to have a lot of EDDs at the end. I'm in the first week and it seems like I'm so far ahead of everyone so I do a lot of lurking on Jan. Also it's reasonably likely this baby won't wait til feb.
Count me among the booze misers! I'm sure this will sound weird to most, but beer is a pretty big part of life for H and I. We've planned vacations around breweries, go to tastings almost weekly, try to grab rare beers from liquor stores, etc. We're nerds about it. It has been the hardest thing to give up for pregnancy, even though I was much more stressed about giving up my dive job going in.
@Xstatic3333 I don't think that sounds weird at all! What a fun hobby to share - I wish my husband liked booze as much as I do lol
It is fun! TBH though we probably end up drinking a little more than we should from a calorie perspective. H has actually lost weight since I got KU and he lost his drinking buddy.
I used to be a glass of wine or two a night until I got pregnant with DD and I haven't had a drop since (unless you count the a-hole who gave me a mimosa during my last half marathon). No alcohol for 2 years on March 2. I'll be 4 years in before I drink again.
Like @Xstatic3333, beer is a huge hobby for me. It's like. Half my relationship with my best friend. We love to seek out great beer and wait in line for rare releases. I was kind of hoping that I'd be like a lot of other people and lose my taste for beer, but it smells SO GOOD to me that whenever my husband opens up a bottle, I get another wave of that deep longing. I am already planning lists of the great beers I'll drink as soon as the first trimester is over. My NT scan is on August 15th, and I'm planning on getting a beer immediately afterward. It will be 10 in the morning. Do not care.
I wish I liked the taste of beer but never have. And I think beer breath is the worst. I hate it when H had some beer and wants a kiss, obviously I'm gonna kiss him but it's so stinky.
@kswiger06 the CDC announced new recommendations regarding alcohol earlier this year which basically amount to "if you are of childbearing age, do not ever drink any alcohol." The recommendations are largely regarded as unrealistic and perhaps even a bit misogynistic. The "logic" behind the decision is that "there is no amount of alcohol that has been shown to be safe" for pregnant women and their babies. The problem with this statement is that it's impossible to show whether any amount of alcohol is safe. To do the proper research in order to test safe levels of alcohol consumption would be unethical and would never be approved by an IRB. So the new recommendation is a conservative analysis based on liability, not on practical understanding. Other countries with broader recommendations about alcohol show lower rates of fetal alcohol syndrome than in the US - a reflection more on our puritanical attitudes toward alcohol than anything else.
It's one of those situations where you need to talk to your doctor and use your best judgment. I personally believe that one beer once a week, paired with a healthy diet and a lot of water, is not going to hurt my baby. This is also in line with the previous CDC recommendation.
@MonaLisaRalphio thank you so much for the information. I personally avoid all alcohol but try not to judge others. Honestly aside from seeing a few strangers with a beer from time to time, you are the only person I've heard say they were going to have a beer. Considering all your other helpful advice and knowledge I figured you had some beer info that I do not know lol Also that does make sense that they can't really conduct extensive research safely so of course they will play it safest to say all alcohol should be avoided. I hadn't considered that as a reason before.
@kswiger06 sorry I didn't see that you'd moved your response to a PM until after I posted!
Just a thought: perhaps the reason you don't see a lot of pregnant women drinking is because you yourself avoid alcohol entirely? I wouldn't say I spend a lot of time in bars, but I live in a huge beer town and it's really common to go do breweries on weekends, and I see pregnant women drinking all the time. So perhaps it's an environment thing.
Also, I know a bunch of people who wouldn't have any alcohol while in public, but drank occasionally at private events. It's pretty common for strangers to get judgey when they see a pregnant woman drink alcohol (or drink coffee, or eat junk food, or like, breathe funny) out in the world, so I see the value in just not wanting to have to deal with that.
This is super random- we are watching a friend's children tonight and all of the kids are happily playing upstairs in the playroom except for the one who keeps telling me over and over again that he likes boy dogs not girl dogs. I'm like dude, I'm trying to read a book.
tagging on the alcohol discussion - once I'm done with the nausea and 1st tri I am totes having a small glass of wine. Cheers.
DD1- Aug11 Angel Baby- June13, said goodbye Oct12 DD2- Aug13 DD3- due Feb17
@MommaBean it was an honest and respectful question. I originally posted it to the thread but thought @MonaLisaRalphio might have preferred it to be private.
@MonaLisaRalphio that's true too, I don't usually go to bars or go out much in general aside from family events with our kids and common errands. I probably would see more pregnant women drinking if I were around more pregnant women and people drinking lol Oh and I avoid alcohol entirely while pregnant. Sorry I was unclear about that. I do drink socially or just to relax at home.
I really want this kid to be born in Feb because and Amethyst looks so much better with emeralds (DD birthstone) than aquamarine....
I hated my birthstone growing up. But my mind completely changed when my son was born. I'm so excited for this baby to share a birthday month with him and I. My original wedding ring started having a reaction with my skin after I had my DS, so my DH let me pick out a new wedding ring and it is an Amethyst with a few diamonds on the side. It was from a pawn shop for maybe $100 and I love it so much!

For anyone interested, a good starting place for doing your own research on alcohol (and many other things) is the book Expecting Better. Now I've heard some criticism from fellow science nerds that her analysis of alcohol is a little too biased towards the "pro moderate drinking" camp, but you can't deny the serious flaws she points out with many of the most oft-quoted studies. For example, in one U.S. study, a huge chunk of the women who participated were using not just alcohol, but also cocaine. There are better studies available from countries like Denmark and Australia where the stigma is lower so a broader spectrum of women, including those making very healthy choices, have a drink or two while pregnant.
Yes! I only posted yesterday because I put in that dress and thought, holy crap. But somebody lurked from October and thinks I am faking. Um. . . Do enough people here know me enough that you know I just already have 3 kids and am, well, fat!

I have friends who are nurses that deliver babies with alcohol fetal syndrome. It's heart breaking. I, Myself, losing one baby due to unknown reasons, would not risk it. Going through the loss of Kali gave me a whole different perspective on taking unnecessary risks. I didn't even take any real risks with her either, but this time around no way. That pain was and still is unbarable. Ultimately, a mother-to-be has to follow her gut instincts/intuition and all of ours are going to be different in their own way.

I have one sip of my H beer when he cracks his first one open. I had a glass of wine on my birthday when I was pregnant with DD. I love booze. Vodka is my fave. Personally, I just tend to be on the "following what the Dr says" and my OB is pretty strict. I won't judge anyone else for an occasional indulgence though.

But honestly, do your own research and decide for yourself. I'm not here to tell anyone what to do with their lives (well, except perhaps when it comes to wearing pizza leggings in public, because honey no). This article is a good place to start, though: https://broadly.vice.com/en_us/article/what-to-expect-when-youre-drinking-while-pregnant
