Re: Weekly Randoms 6.20.2016

  • @Ashleymn we bought a Ninja and made our own food, but we got really lazy really quickly about making extra and storing it, so we ended up just buying the organic pouches at the grocery store for when we were on the go.  We couldn't figure out a good way to store the food.  We tried freezing in ice cube trays and transferring it to Ziploc bags, but we usually ended up forgetting to put it in bags (and then it got freezer burned) or we ran out of room in the freezer.  And it doesn't really transport well when it's frozen.  We bought reusable pouches, but they were really hard to clean and the food ended up being too chunky to be easily squeezed out of the pouch.  We usually just ended up pureeing about one baby-sized serving of whatever vegetable we were eating so our kid could eat with us, but we didn't end up storing it.

We really like the Ninja because it's pretty versatile (has three different sized containers and covers for each container so if you have extra, you can just throw the cover on and put it in the refrigerator overnight) and now that we don't need it to make baby food, we can still use it to make smoothies.  I've never tried the baby bullet so I can't really comment on it.

  • @turtlemomma him being in preschool means an iep right? having one from the beginning is perfect because as he grows educationally they'll have the longest possible running record of his growth and be able to pinpoint the exact needs each year. I'm sure your blood pressure dropped about 30 points since that news ;)
  • @mrszoess What exactly is IEP? My son's teachers emailed me a couple times about IEP meetings, but no one ever explained to me what it was. He's going to be a junior next year and I've only been involved in his schooling for a couple years, so my husband and I are both clueless. We kept meaning to ask his teachers or his mother, but we both kept forgetting. Lol

@Ashleymn I used a food processor so I didn't have to buy something separate. I've also used my blender and they both worked great. I froze mine in tablespoon increments in ice cube trays and then stored them in baggies. They kept really well for a month or more. The only problem I found was that some of my mixes I could never get super smooth. They always had a weird texture, like peas always had some chunks. I'm sure some trial and error would have fixed this but my kids moved to table food pretty quickly.

  • @ignoscemihi @Greencows4812 Hmm, it never occurred to me to use my Ninja or my food processor. Knowing my mom, she'll still buy the bullet, but trying it out with my processor would be a good place to start. See if I actually stick to it.

@bnsmith85, @ignoscemihi, @Greencows4812  thank you for your input! I do appreciate it.  I'll definitely have to do some more research when it comes to recipes and maybe some more storing because we have a tiny freezer, or just make in small increments.
@Greencows4812, I'll have to look into the food processor, did your LO seem to mind the texture or the chunkiness?

@Ashleymn not sure. Maybe both. Although he didn't like store bought peas either so probably everything about them lol.

Eta: There were other ones I couldn't get super smooth but he didn't mind, like strawberries. He, however, did not do my carrots but would eat store bought so I think that was definitely due to the texture/chunkiness.

  • @Ashleymn Like @ignoscemihi, I just used my Ninja and wouldn't bother getting a food processor made just for baby food. In my opinion, you're paying a markup because it's advertised as being a baby gadget but really any food processor would do the trick. We also had the best intentions of making our own food, but DD really enjoyed the organic pouches more. I began BLW (baby led weaning) around 7 months anyway, so while we used the pouches for on the go, DD was introduced to table food rather quickly and preferred that to purées.

I know we are a LONG way from our babys eating but I've been playing with the idea of making my own baby food, and before I put the baby bullet on my registry I had a question for any BTDT moms. How did your homemade food keep and for how long? Did you find it to be cheaper or more expensive?

Edit because I have been leaving words out in all of my post lately and my spelling has been bad as well. D:
Look into Baby Lead Weaning. I found it sooooo much easier than trying to prepare extra stuff.

Yes! At our meeting today we discussed his (rough draft) IEP and that we could modify it at any time depending on how things go. He's currently in the Birth-to-Three program where they have something similar to an IEP called an IFSP which is roughly the same thing. The only sucky thing is that his current services will end August 3rd when he turns 3 but preschool doesn't start until September 12th so we'll have that gap in services but I'm going to try and fill that gap with fun classes and such as best I can.

And most definitely my BP went down a few notches  :)

  • Oh! And everone needs to watch The Business of Being Born. Crazy good documentary on birth practices in the USA.

  • @TurtleMomma yes to both! Baby led weaning is awesome! Much easier too! I don't think I made any baby food purée's with my second. I still did the ocassional oatmeal or rice cereals here and there but mostly I just cut up whatever we were having for supper. I imagine baby number 3 I'll just give him the whole pork chop and say have at it buddy! No kidding probably not but I was much more chill with my second and she is a way way better eater than my oldest.
I loved watching the business of being born, made me cry too in some parts! Such a great documentary.

  • @krzyriver it stands for individualized education plan. it's a meeting yearly for kids who have special learning needs from anything like medicine they need to needing self inclusion classes. the purpose is to get all in school providers and the parents to brainstorm what will make the child do their best the following year.

and @kmolleltz I still have no idea what that little group is even about or how it formed, and I'm kind of over it. there's no rational discussion with them.

@SuperNerd42 haha love it. I was just so confused the whole time. I couldn't even tell who was on which "side" for the longest time. I'm still not sure what the issue was. So lost.

    btw happy weekend everyone!!

  • Either I'm sick or my allergies are going berserk. Either way, I've had a terrible sore throat since Thursday night. I am so over this. It is interfering with everything in my life.

On a separate, random topic, I have watched The Business of Being Born. It was interesting and also terrifying. Does anyone have suggestions for good birthing or newborn care videos to watch online? I really don't want to go to a class.

  • *Puts on tinfoil hat*  It did seem awfully coincidental that there was an argument on the baby name thread and then, all of a sudden, that group came out to flood the board with negativity and snark.  Awfully coincidental.  *Takes off tinfoil hat*

We considered baby led weaning, but ended up not doing it.  Our doctor said she wasn't a fan because it tries to override the gag reflex before the child is ready.  I know the BLW proponents say there's a difference between choking and gagging (gagging being okay because it just pushes the food forward to chew more), but I just got too nervous that he was going to choke.  We had friends who did it with great success, though, so I don't have anything against it.

@krzyriver Also, if he is a Junior, the IEP also includes transition services, which includes planning and goals to help the individual after they are done with school.  Many times this can include additional services and testing to see what the individual has interests in, what their goals are, training/shadowing to go into the workforce after graduation.  You and your husband can request an IEP meeting to just be informed of goals, progress of those goals, and meet those on your stepson's team at any time. he should have an identified caseworker at the school you can contact.  If you don't know who that is, you can call the school and they will direct you to the correct person.

ETA: Just was jumping in there as I am a former Special Ed teacher K-12.  I'm still licensed in Special Ed in multiple categories, but I work in the central office now.

Aka the greatest group on tb!
No need to hate on any of our members.
Yes, we do venture out to other areas of tb as some of us have children and have valuable info for FTMs.
We also have opinions *gasp* on certain topics.
It isn't against TOU to venture out of said group an share our knowledge or opinions.

I hope you have a lovely day as well!

I wasn't aware that I argued, nor did I ever say anything about anybody staying put. Guilty of lurking here. I for one am just ready to let this die. On BOTH sides, Jeezus.
  • @krzyriver Not sure if someone answered this, but IEP stands for Individual Education Plan.  It allows the school system to identify the student and place accommodations that will help level the playing field and in turn make them more successful.  For example, I work with Deaf kids, so they have an IEP identifying a hearing loss (and any other learning disabilities <-- hate that word btw), and accommodations include interpreters, note takers, extra time on tests and assignments, preferential seating (up front), closed captioning (which rarely happens), and others. It is believed that with these accommodations, a student that is considered to have an educational disadvantage will be given equal opportunities as kids that are "normal" <-- also hate that word

And as much as this is probably old, I love the "inappropriate" thread - gotta love the DP and film it comments lol
