  • Hi! I'm finally jumping in since we found out yesterday we're having a GIRL! We'd both been convinced it was a boy and were 100% settled on our boy name: Greyson Forrest.

What are the opinions on Hudgins for a girl's name? It's DH's grandmother's maiden name. She passed away last year and I've always thought it would be a good girl's name. I have a strong personality (not that that means my daughter will) and I favor really strong names. I'm struggling with a middle name, and honestly any other first names that I like.

Our last name is a single syllable starting with L. And it is such that it makes names I like awkward because of known connotations. So Grace is out (a name I loved which is how I got to Greyson for a boy). Basically Grace L_ _ _ is awkward. Any ideas for middle names?

The only other name I really like is Virginia. I thought about it for the middle name - Hudgins Virginia, but not sure if that's too long. Maybe I need a single syllable middle name to pair with it?

  • @MorganL925 I don't mind Hudgins as a name but I would make it her middle name, just because I think it flows better that way. I'm all about some family named which is what we are using. But ours are so unique I'm not sharing online  :)

  • Hudgins sounds like a last name for me (although name girls last names is common, i.e. Kennedy, Reagan, etc)

I don't know the reference so that's totally okay. Sure all names ever can be referenced to something.

Just don't name anyone Kathleen, she will be forever and always referenced to any and all Katherines. Signed, a Kathleen who in her adult life is sick of being confused with Katherines who happen to work in the same building .
  • Ahh, I really liked (like) Hudgins. I don't know. Maybe because I've been saying it so much, it just sounds like it could be a last name first name. Like the McKinleys, Kennedy, Monroes, etc. like @kathleenkat mentioned. I like Virginia Hudgins, but I grew up with an acquaintance with that name, so it might be a little weird to those who also knew her. Ahh, this name thing is hard. I can't believe we knew a boys name without issue, but I am having a really hard time with girls names. I totally blame our last name.

I also like Emerson (call her Emmy) but years ago DH said no as it reminded him of the TV brand. Maybe he's changed his mind.

  • Sorry, but Hudgins is bad as a first name (super honest thread, right?). I think it sounds like a hedgehog's name, and she would deal with a lot of teasing, like "pudgin." If you like Virginia, what about Carolina or Ginnifer?
  • @nataliemaephotography that sign is so beautiful!

I'm with the bandwagon on Hudgins being a bad first name-- sorry. Perhaps as a middle name?

@CaptainPhasma I like Cecilia. Cecily is one of my favorite names and they're pretty close.

I have a question for you all and I also posted it on the BNB so apologies in advance if you frequent both boards. Eleanor is a family name and I would like to use it, but I thought it was getting super popular. I checked the SSA site and in 2014 it was #78. I just want to avoid the top 15-20. 2015 data isn't available yet. Has Eleanor popped up a lot recently in your circles? I'd love to use it but I'm afraid of getting attached before having a better idea of just how common it is in 2015-2016. Thanks for your input!
I love Eleanor & only know of one, who is 11, and goes by Ellie. I think it's a super sweet name - go for it!
My daughter is Chloe Elleanore Corson. I had originally chosen Elleanore after a great aunt but my ex insisted on Chloe. Since my name is AmiJoy, I wanted to continue a unique spelling. Corson was my grandmother's maiden name. Our newest addition is the dreaded Jaxson... my husband chose that because it's also a family name. Jaxson Jaymes Coen. All three are family names as well.

@allythekid but really what about Johnny Elia (maybe elia is a tanzanian name? I'm actually not sure I know anyone in the states with it but it seems to flow nice)
    Johnny Kay
    Johnny Dylan
    Johnny Ezra

In case you couldn't tell I have a bit of free time...
My paternal great grandmother was named Johnnie Rose... it's doable.
  • Alas, my husband dashed my dreams of naming our daughter Ruby by telling me that it rhymes with BOOBIES.

    Damn it man!
  • @LGW2015, not really. Many of his family members have nature-inspired names, but it isn't really a Native name.

I'm gonna be honest here...I think you can do better.  There are soooo many beautiful girls names, I don't think of Hudgins as a first name at all, let alone for a girl.  Maybe as a middle name if you're really wanting to honor his grandmother?  What was her first name?

ETA: and Virginia Hudgins just makes me think Vanessa Hudgens for some reason.  I do love the name Emmy though, that was on our list if baby had been a girl!

@kamroberts I actually prefer Archer Wyatt over Archer Wilder, because of the double -er ending.
I never thought of that! I just have Archer Wilder stuck in my head and I can't seem to like Archer Wyatt as much. DH is trying to veto Wilder so I guess we'll see. I like Archer Wyatt but not as much as Archer Wilder.
  • So I need some opinions. My BF and I have completely different style when it comes to naming children... Especially boys. I have a 5.5 year old from a previous relationship and his name is Ryder Joseph. I still absolutely love his name and it fits him so well.

So agreed instantly on a girl name, Laila, but of course this baby is a boy. Right now we have after tears from me, and him being angry, on the name Callan. Which is Cal-en, kind of like Alan. We thought the nn "Cal" was cute. MN will be Kenneth after my father.

Whar at are your thoughts on it... Nobody (especially both sides of parents) think too fondly of it. But, that doesn't bother me too much. But is it too weird?

  • @Cakimmy30 Hmm! I have never heard that name but I kind of like it! I also like Kenneth, although that's a strong Ca-Ca sound. Whether or not that works has a lot to do with his last name. Ie Callan Kenneth Coleman would be too much, IMO.

  • @Cakimmy30, I love Callen! Also, my 5 year old boy is Rider Gordon! This baby is also going to be a boy, possibly with middle name Joseph (or John or Martin). We haven't picked out a FN yet.

  • @MorganL925 I LOVE Emerson for a girl.  Emmy for short is also adorable.  But, I always think of Ralph Waldo Emerson and I love the idea of naming a child after an historic literary figure.  Just sounds all dreamy and romantic, but at the same time a strong, independent name for a girl.  You could always use Hudgins as a middle name then!  Emerson Hudgins sounds kind of awesome. :)
  • All right, y'all are starting to sway me.

I do love Emerson. I always have and DH likes it now too (thankfully). DH also likes Ainsley and Virginia. I'd like to incorporate a family name as the middle name. If we do Emerson, should we do a more feminine middle name? Or is Emerson pretty much a girl's name now? We'd likely call her Emmy/Emmie regularly, so that's feminine.

We have Hudgins, Jane, Kelley, Lucy and some others but I'm not too fond of them. Anyone want to share opinions on those/any pairings? It's hard because I don't want to share our last name, but all of those should work.

@MorganL925 The first thing that popped in my head was Emerson Leigh, which I still think works with Emmy. I like one syllable middle names with a longer name like Emerson (which I love, btw).

Eta: Of the ones you mentioned, Emerson Jane would be my pick, for the reason stated above.
  • Emerson Jane!
  • I dislike Emerson for a girl because of the -son suffix is counter-intuitive. It means, "son of." If you want to call her Emmy, why not name her Emmy. I have the same aversion to Madison  ("...but we will call her Maddy") which is a widely popular girl's name.

Of your options @MorganL925 I would pick Emerson Jane. I actually only know 2 Emersons, both male, so I wouldn't say it's a girl name.
  • +1 Emerson Jane
  • I want to change one of our girls' names to Thomasin and can't talk SO into it. :( it makes me sad.
  • Ohhh sjo_thetwins that is a pretty one (I've seen it as Thomasine and Tamsyn in different places, too.) Lovely in historical romances.

  • I loooove Emerson Jane (nn Emmy).  I've thought about this exact name for a future baby if we ever have a girl!  I've always liked the name Emma but it's just way too popular so Emerson is a good compromise.  Jane is a family name too for both me and DH, and I think it works great as a middle name.  I like Ainsley too but it doesn't really pair well with the family names.  Ainsley Jane maybe.

  • My daughters name is Emmy. Her middle name is Lynn, but we call her Emmy Lou a lot:) so I think it's a great name;)  Our third baby is on the way and we are trying to find a cute short name to go with it!

  • We just recently found out we're having a girl and were torn between two names: Sophie Lynn and Holly Fisher. Both middle names are family names, and as of yesterday we have finally settled on one! If she would've been a boy, we would've called her Jack Jeffrey, Jeffrey being after my dad  <3
  • I'm sorry to dig up this board when I know there is another name board that is more recent, but that one seemed to end up being kind of negative and, more to the point, seemed for people who have already decided on a name. Unfortunately, I can't count myself in that group! I wanted to get people's opinions on the name Moira.

It was a name my sister came up with because she wants us to name her Moira Kelly (Kelly is my sister's name) and it already flows because of the actress by that name. Plus I love the connection to Peter Pan (Wendy Moira Angela Darling).

My my mom thinks people will have trouble pronouncing it (a coworker surprised me with really not being able to) and my issue is that my DH and I already have 'M' names and I'm kind of 'eh' on 3 out of 4 of us having the same initials.

    Any opinions?
  • @maf9866 is it pronounced like moy-ra, my-ra, or another way? I wouldn't worry too much about strangers (like me lol) not knowing how to pronounce it bc once people meet her they should be able to get it right. One thing I just wonder is - and I know this goes against suggestions that if you like a name then F everyone's opinions - if your sister is the one who came up with a middle name and it's her own name, will other family members have issues with that? Just thinking on a practical/headache level for yourself. Not sure if you anticipate that type of drama with your family, but basically I think if you like it, go for it!
  • @maf9866 I think it's beautiful and classy and recognizable but not common - which is great! Just make sure you actually want it and you're not just appeasing your sister =)

  • @maf9865... if you're already feeling eh about it because of the 3 Ms in the house, keep looking and hold that one on the back burner. You'll know it's right when you just keep comig back to it even when other names are good because you've just fallen in love with that one. At least in my experience

also... No worries on revising this thread! Thanks for paying attention to the board organization!

@UponAStar16 and @RainMira9e  I do have a lot of brothers and sisters (I'm one of 6) but none of my siblings care (so to speak). My dd already has my other sister's middle name. It is totally self serving of her but she only has a son and won't have more kids so she is trying to live vicariously through nieces. Haha I wouldn't really consider it if it didn't already 'sound' good together. Oh and pronounced moy-ra!

@bnsmith85 that's pretty much where I am now. I'm not sold but I am really struggling with names. I have a list a mile long of boys names and zero girls names. So that one just keeps circling around...

Edit it to add: the other names we are considering: Rowan, Violet, Lucy and Archer. We apparently like either boys names or 'older' names.

    Thanks for the input ladies!
