We purchased a wedge that has two pieces connected so baby cannot roll back to their back and also cannot continue to roll over to their stomach. It keeps her on her side. Last night was our first night and it worked like a charm. I got it off amazon.

  • Not sure where to ask this but, I wanna do this for DH's Father's Day present. Any suggestions for paint that's safe that I can use on LO's foot?

  • My husband goes back to work next week, so I'll be handling the nights mainly, especially if he has to fly the next day. A lot of his good friends who had babies recently used this as the time to get the baby out of the bedroom and into the nursery. Right now, LO is in a 2-3 hour night cycle of sleep, wake up, diaper change, eat, sleep, repeat. She's currently sleeping in a glider bassinet that moves. Our nursery is right across from our bedroom, so all diaper changes have been taking place in there with me feeding in bed. I'm not opposed to moving her to the nursery. I plan on doing the changing there as well as nursing so my husband can sleep (must be nice...).

Does this seem too soon? If I do move her into the nursery, would you go straight to the crib, or do you think it's okay to just move the glider bassinet in the room?

  • Any other mamas giving their babies vitamin D drops? The pediatrician recommended we start giving him some soon. Ezra is really healthy but we live in the Pacific Northwest and pretty much everyone is vitamin D deficient here. I looked it up on kellymom since I breast feed and take vitamin D and it said Ezra still might need some because he's indoors a lot and our weather is pretty overcast (it's currently raining as I type).

I actually got a custom baseball with DS's name on it and a glass case so DH can put it on his desk at work :)

Yes. We use Carlson Baby D3. There's no extra crap in it and it only takes one drop per day. We used it with DS too. I put the drop on my nipple just before feeding once per day so he gets it as he eats.

Thanks! I definitely wanted to be careful about giving him crap with his vitamin D!

I use the same brand. I used them during pregnancy at the advice of my doctor and my toddler loves them too so frequently takes them as well.
I didn't really use them daily when I nursed the toddler when toddler was a baby, more like whenever I remembered. I also read up a lot and asked LLL and other nursing moms in the area and after that I didn't see them as essential - more like neutral. But we live in the South so that is a lot different of a climate than yours.
  • Yup, my ped recommended the D drops today at our one week checkup too. I just ordered the Carlson brand as well.
  • Anyone else's LO struggling with gas? My guy gets so worked up about gas, hiccups and burps that don't come. It breaks my heart. Then today we had an explosive up the back poop followed by a super watery poop that kept going and going 2 diapers later. Waiting to see if it continues. Last night and tonight we tried Gripe Water to get him to calm down about the gas, and it worked within minutes. I just hope it didn't cause him diarrhea? I mean how much watery yellow stool is normal for a 2 week old? He doesn't seem dehydrated, had several wet diapers since this and we've kept nursing.

I'm also concerned about dairy in my diet? he seems to struggle with acid reflux or something bc he spits up a lot after nursing, and when we put a slight incline under his mattress he started sleeping better without any spit ups. He also gets hiccups after almost every feeding. We go to the doc on Monday so hopefully we get this worked out then.

My LO gets worked up with gas too. As long as they're pooping I wouldn't be too concerned. Don't worry about the dairy in your diet, you really only need to be concerned if you see blood in their stools which could indicate an intolerance or allergy. My LO also has reflux. We started her on some medication yesterday and it working wonders already. She's much more settled after eating. We also raised the mattress and it definitely helps. She also gets the hiccups after eating but usually only if she lies down too soon after a feed...so try to avoid that. It'll also help with the reflux. Definitely bring up all this to your doc. Always good to get their perspective and advice

This is my exact situation literally to a 'T'. Keep us updated. We go to the pediatrician tomorrow.

Yes we are . We have the enfamil brand of the liquid vitamin supplement. Our pedatrician highly recommended it. Lo has not problem taking it because i guess it's sweet and tastes good to them.

I asked my LC about this right before Ezra was born because I'm lactose intolerant and was curious. They said gas/fussiness typically isn't a reaction they see from babies being sensitive to something you eat, you'd instead see a classic allergic reaction such as a rash.
  • Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but if you are using an app to track LO's feedings and diaper changes, which one? I have been using Glow which I don't love. Any recs?

  • I use webmd baby tracker... It's basic but free, and I use it mainly to see feeding times
  • I use babynursing. I didn't love it at first, but it's grown on me. It's also nice that my husband can download the same app and we can sync up. We're also using it to track diapers, vaccines, and doctors appointments.
  • @babyfmama, I use Baby Daybook. I like it because it has a feature that allows me to export the data and print it out for the pediatrician that way I can just hand it to her at each appointment. It tracks, eating, sleeping, diapers, baths, tummy time,  temperature, and can even be used to track meds, playtime, etc.

@ayeshaohara, how old was your LO when prescribed reflux medication?  How much spit up were you seeing before it was prescribed? My son spits up alot, but I noticed it only happens in the feedings before noon, typically between 3 or 4 AM and 12 pm. He's fine in the afternoon and evening. My pediatrician didn't seem willing to prescribe reflux medication yet, but I'm worried about how much milk he's losing. He's gaining, but still only a little over 7 lbs.
  • My LO isn't here yet but I'm trying to get some things sorted out. My SO will not be missing any more work than the few days we'll be in the hospital. With that said, while I'm sure I'll be awake sometime around 5 every morning, the alarms will still be on and we are going to room share. Are any of you experimenting with this? Are your LOs becoming immune to the alarm? Should I move myself and the bassinet to the living room during nightly feedings incase she goes back to sleep?

Mine sleep through the alarm no problem. Always have
  • @1mae2016, I'm a crazy spider monkey when DH's alarm goes off. My LO wakes up at everything! I've actually had to learn to putter in our master bedroom very carefully because if my joints so much as creak LO will suddenly realize he's alone in the bassinet and cry. DH is a master at sleeping through his alarm for several minutes so I'm pushing DH out of the bed every morning to try and preserve a little more sleep with our son.

My LO sleeps through everything, just like her mom. If the alarm will wake you up that will be just as frustrating, nothing worse than just drifting off for the first time in 12-24 hours just to be woken up by H's alarm. I've learned to keep my phone on silent for that reason. Either way, I've ended up camped out in the living room with my LO at night for other reasons, so it is definitely something to stay open to.
  • @babyfmama I use Total Baby, I've used it for 2 years. It's not the coolest looking interface but I like the data it provides. I like analysis and the more info I have it always helps me, but it could be overkill for someone more laid back.

You can track basically anything (feedings, pumping inventory, diapers, sleep, medicine, growth charts) and it provides a chart so you can easily see patterns. I found it really helpful as my son got a little older and we were working on sleeping through the night to find patterns that worked. We keep an old iPad for white noise in his room so his babysitter was also always able to update the app and I could check from wherever I was.

@mslan So he's had 3 small normal (not watery) poops with lots of pee since I posted last night. So unless it starts up again I'm going to wait until his appointment on Monday. I also wonder if my oversupply issue could cause watery stool and gas? He chokes a bit on my left boob and I have to burp him a lot. Working on block feeding to try to lessen it some.

Why are newborns so scary?!? I never knew fear until I became a mother...

edit: nvm... Back to diarrhea. Sigh

Most newborns will sleep through quite a bit of noise because their hearing isn't fully developed. If your baby gets here and you find they are very sensitive, I would just put a white noise machine near the bassinet.

I haven't started using an app yet this time around because she's still in the early days when sleep has literally no pattern. But I used Total Baby with my son (I remember the name because my husband liked to call it Total Baby Recall :) ) and it was great for figuring out nap patterns. It's got a good interface for comparing their sleep lengths at different times of day and it helped me figure out when was the best time to put him down for his naps/ how much wake time was optimal between them. But that wasn't really until 6 weeks or so.

One thing you can try with over supply so that he doesn't always fill up on foremilk is if he starts to choke or gag, unlatch him and let your milk spray into a rag until the flow stops, then latch him back on.
  • I like the idea of the white noise machine. That's something I should probably invest in anyhow. Thanks for the tips ladies!

I use the BabyConnect app. It has an easy interface and will sync across multiple devices and accounts and also has a web interface. It cost $5 to purchase but it was a lot better than any of other apps I tried with DD2 two years ago and our account was still active after over a year on not using it for DD3.

Soooo thought we had a doctor's appointment today, turns out it's Tuesday. LO is having trouble latching now. Idk what to do. Guess I'll go pump.

Yes, soooo scary. I wish they came out talking because I find myself saying "Nate, what's wrong?? Idk what to do..."

24 days old. He prescribed Zantac which is fairly standard, just so you know. We waited until she was past the first couple of weeks to see if things settled on their own but when they didn't we knew she needed something. Some doctors will tell you it should pass on its own and that can certainly be the case but I wasn't going to make her suffer through it knowing that the medication is perfectly safe for her.

She had small amounts of spit up not big vomits. You could just tell she had this horrible taste in her mouth. And also it always happened when we would lie her down after a feed, never if she was upright, so classic signs of reflux. She certainly wasn't losing large amounts of her feed...sounds like you have vomiting occurring vs small spit ups. My LO put on 2lbs in 2 weeks!!! Pretty crazy!

  • Any mamas that have colicky or gassy babies, this is a PSA for gripe water. It is amazing! Baby slept for 4.5 hours before I had to wake her to feed her. Helps her tummy so much! I have a happy baby again.

I just bought some this morning to help with hiccups. Within a minute of giving her a dose mid-hiccup they were gone. I hope it helps with the fussiness during those times that nothing calms her.

Night before last, Violet screamed for 4 hours straight. I bought some yesterday. And also, for rid of her hiccups mid hiccup! But I started using it yesterday and she has been so much more calm and relaxed. Fingers crossed its not just a fluke. So far it's the best $10 I've spent.
