This is probably for the BF'g thread, but is anyone having trouble feeding for longer than 7-10 minutes at a time because LO falls asleep at the boob and refuses to be roused?
Mine does this, but he drains it in that time. I was concerned he wasn't gaining enough, but he has put on over half a pound since last week so he is just a quick eater. Do you still feel full afterwards?
My guy falls asleep at the boob sometimes. I've tried two things- 1. Trace his ear lightly with my finger. It tickles him just enough. 2. Leave him on the boob till the nipple naturally falls out then offering it again.
Mine falls asleep at the boob, too. It takes forever to get in at least 20-25 minutes of good nursing. We let her nurse until it's impossible to wake her up, then I take her off, and my husband burps her, checks her diaper (changes if needed), and we try to wake her up, then back to the boob until she won't wake up, rinse and repeat. She's going well with pooping and peeing, and she went from 7.7 to 7.3 at her newborn appointment, which our doctor said was good since they lose at first. We'll see for sure everything is going well at her 2 week appointment next week if her weight is on an upswing.
I got a little nervous since I'm mostly feeding from one boob so I weighed my baby myself. It actually made me feel a lot better to see he's gaining just fine
I've got a gassy fussy baby too. Last night she was up all night. She's 9 days old. What can I do besides burping throughout the feeding session, belly massages, bicycle legs? Is she old enough for gripe water? She also seems a little wheezy/ congested but nothing you can see. I emailed my dr and waiting to hear back. Guess the only thing we can do is use a humidifier. I'll have to check out the videos posted on gas and burping.

My midwife suggested gripe water when I asked yesterday. Last night was hell and I heard screams come from my baby that I would have said couldn't be human if I didn't see it myself. Going to try the water tonight. The belly rubs and bike legs aren't working as well as I thought
Of course you want to discuss with your pediatrician but when my DD was a newborn, she had extreme problems with gas (complicated my reflux). Anyway, our pedi approved the use of simethicone gas drops for infants. There are tons of brands out there but we had huge success with that over using gripe water. We couldn't go without them for her first few months.
New question! My LO's fingernails are getting really long (and sharp!) but the nurses at the hospital told us that we shouldn't use a nail clipper until she's at least a month old because the nails can still be attached to skin at this age. They told us to use an Emory board for babies so I ordered one from Amazon prime. It came today and I tried to file her nails but I swear that thing is useless! Anyone have any advice for me?

This is going to sound weird, but bite them. It's the safest way right now while they're so tiny. The Emory boards are annoying.

My milk hasn't come in yet, he's only 2 days old, so I'm not sure.
@LadySamLady the clippers are terrifying, the filing is kind of hard to do because the nails are still a little flimsy. If you're not skeeved by it, bite them. I still bite DD's.
@LadySamLady I just used the clippers with both kids. I have a two step system, first I kind of pull back the pad of the finger to make the nail separate a bit, then I clip them longer than you would think to, because that way I'm not risking the skin clip. I've never had an issue (and those emery boards didn't work for me either!).

This. Also, I always found it easiest to bite or clip them while baby is asleep because the hands are relaxed then. I didn't start clipping DS's nails while awake until he was at least 9 months old or so.

Yes. My son is 3 weeks old and it's still a major struggle keeping him awake to breastfeed. He gets SO sleepy within minutes. I spend 45 minutes feeding him every two hours. It's slowly killing me lol
My baby girl is such a milk addict, she doesn't fall asleep at the boob but she just won't give it up for at least 30-45 mins. It pretty much takes an hour every time we nurse so I totally know what you mean... It's a killer!
So glad to hear other LO's are on the boob for 45 mins! It's exhausting !

We relied on gas drops for a couple months as well. They really were a life saver for us! Gripe water never made a difference.
DS is 7 days old. When do you "bathe" a newborn? When their umbilical cord falls out?
We've just been wiping him down with baby wipes and under his neck to prevent the milk build up.
Our guy is 7 days old today too! We've just been wiping him down if he pees on himself or something like that. I think for the full bath you have to wait until the stump falls off, which kindof sucks because the stump is stinky!

He can have a bath, just don't submerge his belly. Just fill the baby tub up to butt cheek coverage and go.
A few tips: He'll probably hate it, most do. It doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. Also, wipe face, then wash body, then do hair last to help keep heat in. And lastly, if you're unsure of water temperature, save yourself and your sanity and get a thermometer (ours is a turtle we got off Amazon that beeps if it's too hot or too cold for baby).

Just curious, as I'm having problems with just one boob. Why are you mostly feeding from one side? Do you not get engorged on the other side?
RE: Nail clippers. Idk about y'all, but my LO's nails are really soft and the Emory board doesn't do much. We don't bother cutting them unless the has a hangnail, because then it's about to fall off anyway. He hasn't really scratched himself much.
Nighttimes. Are. Killing. Me. My son is so chill all day, he sleeps most of the day, doesn't fuss too bad come 9pm he becomes a whole different baby. He fusses so loudly, and doesn't want to sleep. I try everything, feeding him, burping him, changing him. He's litterally fussing just to fuss- all night long. I don't know what to do
I should add- the fussiness lasts until our morning feeding when I wake up and stay awake. At that point he goes back to bein super chill. I don't get it!

Mine is doing the same. It's apparently really normal. Are you getting any sleep between feedings at night? I've been assured it gets better, just have to push through

I'm getting twilight sleep. His fussing is SO loud it's almost impossible to actually sleep through :-(

The other side has an inverted nipple. I got him to latch a few times but it was very painful. I'm not engorged on that side and today I'm gunna start pumping on that side- occasionally I'll leak on that side so I think it's producing a little. I'm not as lopsided as I thought I would be.
@tripledaggerWed95976 Mine is the same. Soon chill during the day and super fussy at night, but for a reason (he peed/pooped, he's hungry, etc.). It seems like his body is more ON at night.

I'm a FTM so take my advice with a grain of salt, but my baby was EXACTLY the same way. Perfect until about 9pm and then fussy no matter what until he finally passed out from exhaustion. We broke down and got a pacifier and it's been a game changer. He sleeps in more regular shifts at night and is more awake during the day.
@tripledaggerWed95976 That is pretty common, especially since they have no sense of night and day. That being said, with DS we used a pacifier (took a few times for him to want it, but was a game changer!). We also used the baby swing to rock him which he really enjoyed (incline helped too). And the rest was just weathering the storm. It did pass eventually.

This - we make a very clear distinction between night and day and it helped DS1. I've been doing the same this time. During the day I don't keep quiet, have the shades up and sunlight, music going etc. As soon as it close to bedtime we are quieter, keep the lights dimmed etc to help send signals that it's time to sleep when it's dark and quiet. They eventually get it, I think it took DS1 about 3 weeks.

I want to shorten her nails because they really poke my boobs when she's nursing and it hurts! They're like tiny thorns or something.

Same! When she is trying to latch she sometimes reaches out and grabs my nipple with her talons and squeezes and scratches.... It sucks.
@tripledaggerWed95976 so glad you wrote this as I am having same issue. I got a white noise app on my phone a few nights ago and it seems to be helping. He still wakes properly every 2-3 hours but in the meantime it's either stopped him fussing or is helping me sleep through it! Either way it works so far - oh, and it is helping settle him quicker after waking (being fed) etc..
lets hope it keeps working --- then I just need to work out how to stretch his periods of sleeping at night ??again not an issue in the day...
How long do you let your LO fuss before you pick them up/comfort them? I have a really hard time letting baby girl fuss at all but maybe I ought to give her more time to settle on her own.

I tend to be on the quick side, I think. A full cry or "wah" or gaspy sorts of sounds, I go immediately. "Ehh" sorts of sounds, I'll go to him, but won't necessarily pick him right away but will try some soothing things while he's laying (unless he clearly needs a burp). Grunts and similar sounds I'll wait out close to 7-10 seconds before engaging. Usually, those sounds are just LO trying to settle and they'll be very fleeting (maybe fuss for 5 sec then stop), but will happen from time to time throughout the night. Some babies are noisy sleepers. DS even cried in his sleep sometimes, but it was a thinner sounding cry than if he was awake, hungry, or truly needed me. Still unnerving though.
@tripledaggerWed95976 It took him about 4-6 weeks to really figure out the poo thing. But the binky and swing helped him fuss less in the meantime.
@LadySamLady I'm pretty quick to respond as well. I'll give baby a chance to grunt and resituate, but then I'll check it out. Learning the different cries for your baby helps too. Also, I keep track of times when she eats. That way I can just glance at a clock and know if she's starting to stir because it's been 2.5-3 hours so she wants food again. Oftentimes if it's not food time it'll be because of gas/spit up issues.

@JoMunson have you tried a nipple shield? I breastfeed my other two babes and they never liked my right side because the nipple is flat. I really couldn't ever feed from that side and would pump, but it never caught up to the other other side. Because my babies didn't latch it had trouble keeping up during growth spurts and it just generally made things harder by feeding from one side. Oh and holy lopsided boobs!! Finally with this third baby I got a nipple shield and OMG!! Lifesaver!! I have TWO boobs to feed from

I did try it but I felt like he couldn't get anything out. Plus it was so huge it felt like I was choking him! I think it's painful because he's breaking the fibers that are pulling the nipple in. If I could just pump a few times to finally break those guys then I feel like I could try the other side.
how do you get him to sleep in his bassinet if he continues to cry because he wants to be picked up? It kills me having him cry, but I feel like he will never lay down if I pick him up ea h time. I'll put my hand with him, swaddle him, offer a paci, but unless you pick him up, he continues.

I had to go back and get the smaller size for the shield-I have no idea what the sizing was based off of and I think I got the 24 first and then went back for the 20 and that works much better! I also had some success pumping til let down and then getting baby to latch, milk was already there and nipple was pulled out
Re: nipple shields @JoMunson. Did you know you have to flip them inside out and then place them on the nipple? I only mention this bc I was doing it wrong for a long time with DD before my LC taught me the correct way to do it. I'm too lazy right now to link a video on how to properly apply nipple shields, but I'm sure they're out there.
