@junebabyjoy ive been on insulin for over 3 weeks now. It gets easier, i promise. Whats really helped is im having my husband do the injection for me now. I found it hard to do it myself, but i have the syringes. See if your insurance co will cover pens, ive heard they are easier.
Pens are easier, my patients could never feel them when I injected, plus they're easy to dial up vs draw. @VikingGirl12 your fasting is a little high, once mine averaged above 95, my doc started talking about meds. I'm currently on a low dose of glyburide and it's really working well. Your placental hormone that causes insulin resistance will peak at 37 weeks or so, so the meds quite possibly could be temporary, though I know your precious girl could make an earlier delivery.

@Boonhilde fiber one bars are my FAVORITE treat right now!!! Lemon, cinnamon, mint chocolate, and orange cranberry. I eat one every day and I feel like I am having a cheat but they areeennnnttt. I also picked up some Atkins bars at Walmart (can't remember if I mentioned this already or not) and they are chocolate mousse and DELICIOUS! Like a healthier version of a milky way bar.
Just discovered Fiber One protein bars. Also I was able to have milk in the morning without my numbers spiking with Fair Life milk. 50% more protein and 50% less sugar. It has a weird aftertaste though. I like mixing it (2 equal parts) with Fair Life chocolate milk in the evenings. Lots of protein with way less sugar.
KIND bars have been doing it for me. There is a peanut butter and dark chocolate one that is pretty legit and around 20 carbs if you're dying of chocolate deprivation.
Also, FYI, you can order burgers at Red Robin lettuce wrapped instead of on a bun. I had one for dinner with a side salad and my after dinner number was 93! *cheer* Seems like a good way to scratch that burger itch, and a deviation from neverending salad.
Welcome to the thread new GD'ers. Random observation yesterday-I was a slacker yesterday and ate through my stress and wow - I didn't realize how much the GD diet helped w my heart burn. It came back with a vengeance yesterday and I just felt like garbage. Back on track today and grateful!
Thats my rahrah for today although it sort of sucks, I can definitely feel the difference after not even two full weeks.
I found another positive guys! I wouldn't normally have had an ultrasound scheduled this week, but since the GD diagnoses means I have to have one every 2 weeks, I got to see baby's face today! ^-^ SO exciting!
I saw mine today as well!! That was definitely a silver lining in this diagnosis. And it made me even more encouraged to keep up with the diet. We can definitely do this and for such a great reward at the end!
So, first GD meeting this morning. 9am appointment and was finally seen at 10:40. Man! I was so hungry.
Anyways, doc was super happy with my numbers, but my morning fasting seemed consistently just a bit high. I confessed I have a hard time eating right before bed without feeling super fat and guilty - but she said she'd like to see those ##'s go down by next appointment (3 weeks) or they'd start insulin. Yikes! Bedtime snacks it is
@CourtJack think of all of the other indulgences that you skip now with this diagnosis and hopefully that will help change your frame of mind to think of the evening snack as a deserved treat for following a strict diet while every one else eats copious amounts of ice cream. Plus if it keeps your numbers down it is good for baby and good for you!! You've got this.
@CourtJack do you mind me asking what your fasting numbers have been? I'm still in the "we want you to eat normally but track your blood sugar" phase and it seems like my fasting have been really high. But I've nothing to compare it to.
@CourtJack I have until next Thursday to get my fasting numbers down or I will be going to insulin...if you have any luck with certain bedtime snacks let me know!!

They told me a glass of milk is a good bedtime snack, have you tried that?
hi everyone, my fasting numbers were 97 this morning! Havent been below 100 in awhile so i think the insulin (20 units now) is starting to work. Plus, im offiially working from home the rest of my pregnancy (doc said too many complications/too much pain, needed to rest more so i can hopefully keep these babies in as long as possible) so im hoping getting rid of commute stress will help my numbers too.
I noticed some people are seeing their GD docs every few weeks. Am i the only one going weekly?
@shannonrnbsn i think you're right. Ive been on insulin pretty much since they found out i had GD so its always been weekly for mez Its a pain to get to the hospital every week but glad they are monitoring.
@chesterdoodle I have to email in my numbers and I go back and see them again in about 4 weeks. They said if mine keeps being controlled, that is probably the last time they will see me and they will have my OB do NST and ultrasounds go monitor. But if things were to change I would have to see them more frequently.

I got my diet plan Friday and I am already struggling. I am not a big carb eater and they have said I have to have a certain amount with every meal and snack. I am supposed to have 60g every dinner... I was wheat free for about 5 years and have learned how not to eat carbs with things and this is killing me. I prefer a burger no bun over a bun. We have meals where we won't have a single carb. Favorite is kabobs on the grill with just protein and veggies. Now they are saying i HAVE to add 4 choices or 60g of carbs. Is anyone else in the same boat? Has anyone been told they don't have to have to the store?
Also what is everyone doing for snacks I have 30g to do at snack time too.
@jmohio glad you got all the info for your diet plan. What are the carb meal totals throughout the day? Im actually jealous you get 60 at dinner. Most i get is 30-45g for lunch and dinner. Breakfast and snacks are 15-30.
For snacks, i like rice cakes and natural peanut butter, cheese and whole wheat triscuits, or nuts and popcorn or whole wheat pita chips. Im also allowed italian ice (my pregnancy craving) and some form of protein.
The baybel cheeses, string cheeses and laughing cow cheese spreads have been a life saver. Also plain greek yogurt with either berries or a small apple is a great dessert like snack when you need something sweet.
My totals are crazy high in my opinion: breakfast 30g, lunch 45g, dinner 60g and all 3 snacks are 30g. Never thought about Italian ice. My craving has been watermelon and I can only have little amounts of that now. FYI I also found carb master yogurt at kroger I am going to try it.
Ugh I was reading a comment on my birth board and it rubbed me the wrong way. I know it was totally not meant to be taken the way I took it but I couldn't help it. A member told her husband she passed her GD test and he told her how she was taking great care of their little girl. It immediately made me feel like I failed my little girl because I have GD.
@jmohio those are about the same numbers I was told to aim for. I was also told to not go under 12 "carb servings" for the day and to aim for between about 12-15 (each carb serving is 15g of carbs). Sometimes I struggle because I don't want to go overboard with my carbs so I end up going way under. It can be really hard to balance it all out. I use myfitnesspal to make sure I am getting enough of every thing
@darkcat I had a similar problem with one of our GD test threads. That it felt like I "failed" this test and somehow had failed my child. There definitely needs to be more information on what GD is and how truly anyone can get it and the earlier the intervention the better. I also think some women get just under the threshold and think they are good to go and continue eating unhealthy not knowing they could be creating a problem because they were told they "passed".
@chesterdoodle has some great snack idea. I've also been eating KIND granola bars and I found some mini lara bars that are super helpful when I'm trapped at my desk.
@jmohio Oof! I can't at all relate to feeling like you *have* to eat too many carbs o.o. I just want pizza. and pasta. and soft, warm, gooey on the inside, crispy on the outside bread with just a pat of herb butter.
*cries*
Can you add in more fruit to hit your carb numbers? I started cutting up pineapple and strawberries to put in a salad with baked (or nuked :P) chicken and poppyseed dressing. You could probably add pears or figs to a salad with the same results. Or make a salsa with Mangoes or peaches, or a chutney with apples to bake onto chicken or porks or tilapia. My nutritionist gave me a range to hit for lunch and dinner and I think 60 was the absolute highest you can go. I think the rational for not cutting ALL carbs is to keep you from going into ketosis which is bad for baby. Can you test for ketones at home? If you're not getting them in your urine, you're probably alright.
If it makes you feel any better @DarkCat , I've found that I spend SO much time hyperfocused on my diet and the baby *because* of GD I'm probably taking better care of him now than before I was diagnosed.

This! Yes. I actually feel healthier than I felt prepregnancy and outside of sciatic pain and difficulty sleeping, I'm actually enjoying being pregnant. I don't feel like I can chime in on some of the bitchfest boards about how awful pregnancy is because my body is really digging this healthy diet. And I want to translate this healthy eating in to a continued lifestyle and continue to feed my baby healthy foods as it grows up.

Same here. Although I've been having more BHs over the past few days, I feel much better than I ever did.

Sorry for delay in replying! I have to check the conversion chart as my fasting number is 5.3 - which I think converts to about 95? What have yours been?
DarkCat - that's an incredibly ignorant comment. I hope you replied.
FWIW, my previous two pregnancies, I gained 60-75 lbs and had 10lb babies. You could say my diet was far less than stellar. I tested negative both times for GD. This go around, I've reduced my weight gain significantly by eating better, and this time I have GD. It could be due to my history of big babies, it could be due to my age or my ethnicity - or a combo of all three. It DOESN'T have to do with me "not taking care of my baby". That's insulting.
FYI - What GD is:
During pregnancy, the placenta, which connects your baby to your blood supply, produces high levels of various other hormones. Almost all of them impair the action of insulin in your cells, raising your blood sugar. Modest elevation of blood sugar after meals is normal during pregnancy.
As your baby grows, the placenta produces more and more insulin-blocking hormones. In gestational diabetes, the placental hormones provoke a rise in blood sugar to a level that can affect the growth and welfare of your baby. Gestational diabetes usually develops during the last half of pregnancy — sometimes as early as the 20th week, but generally not until later.
I've been a lurker more than a commenter here so far. I got diagnosed with GD a few weeks ago, posted about my meeting with the nutritionist and then my husband and I decided we would take her 'diet' and modify my diet to meet the normal requirements. I calculated my macros and aim for 150g net carbs a day. It is working for me, (my numbers have been super low unless I don't put protein in a meal, then my numbers go high). I am maintaining my weight and baby boy is still growing which makes the doctor happy, and I feel so much better too. The other day my husband and I were out all day and I decided to have a 'whatever' day and I was amazed how much crappier I felt with the amount of carbs I had eaten that day. I've also noticed how much water intake affects my numbers. This morning my blood sugar was 7.7 after breakfast, but then I realized that I hadn't had any water. I drank 600ml of water and my number dropped to 7.0 within 3 minutes of the first test, I drank another 600ml, and 10 minutes after the original test my number was 6.4. I drink a ton of water during the day anyway, but sometimes forget to drink water with my meals and it definitely affects my numbers.
We are traveling today after visiting siblings in law. The weekend was a little tough with managing my numbers because we home cooked meals but it was a little harder to keep track of all of the ingredients and portions etc unlike at home where I weigh stuff and measure stuff out. I keep my numbers under the targets but just barely at some points. It's also harder on the days we have actually been stuck in the car. Moving around (walking etc) definitely helps with numbers. And I had a rough moment at McDonalds just now. I had convinced myself I could have a double cheeseburgers (35g) but at last minute I bravely went with salad and some pretzel sticks I packed from home. With a large water. Who am I?!? My numbers better be AWESOME in two hours.
@wbwells I agree with you, water seems like it makes all the difference some times. I noticed some slight swelling yesterday (rings were tighter) so I started focusing on water intake. Just sucked to have to pee a ton more too. I try to get at least 2 liters in a day but aim for 3 whenever possible. Especially with lunch where my numbers hang a little higher.

What IS it about lunch?? Lunch numbers are consistently my highest numbers of the day. I agree with you on water intake. It can make a huge difference.

Between 101-105. But I decided to start snacking throughout the day and before bed (I haven't been given ANY guidelines yet due to my slightly different situation) and I've managed to keep fasting under 100 the past 2 days. In the waiting room for my first dietitian appt now tho!
