@shannonrnbsn I agree with you I'm typically pretty positive about "I've got this" and just trucking through but it is getting frustrating with the fluctuating numbers. Just feels so out of my control.
K. I KEEP forgetting to check my blood sugar!!!! Frig! I'm supposed to check it an hour after lunch - but every other day (the other days is fasted and right after breaky). And at work I just totally forget. Frig

I set a 1-hour alarm on my phone after meals otherwise I forget to test too.

I am also getting more and more frustrated. My numbers keep going up even though I'm eating literally the same foods. I'm begging my doc to keep me on glyburide, but it's looking more and more like I'll have to be on insulin at some point.
Right there with you dear. It's the worst to be doing what they tell you and working so hard at it only to watch your numbers get worse and worse
While insulin is a pain, it's really not terrible (and I'm not a fan of needles)! Just another round of something to get used to... I hope you can avoid it but if not, I'm here for you!!

I know my friend. I'm so glad to have you as my LB!
I just want to eat today without having to think about what I am eating. I don't even want to eat bad stuff. Just don't want to measure and adjust and record and think and hope and worry that my blood sugar stays down.
Anyone else suffering from extreme thirst? All I want to do is sit in the corner and eat boxes of Popsicles or suck on ice. But I don't fantasize about water ice cubes, I want like, juice ice cubes. I don't like soda so diet doesn't do it for me.
@VikingGirl12 Yes!! I am thirsty all the time. I have to keep 2 bottles of water on my nightstand to get me through the night. I wake up with extreme thirst probably 5x a night. This is despite drinking so much water all day long! Its funny you are craving juice ice cubes (which sound so incredibly delicious!), my one craving this pregnancy is italian ice. I want to eat it all the time!
Had my first hypoglycemic episode. Didn't eat enough carbs at lunch, took a nap and woke up at 66. Drank some milk and got back to 96, but damn that was scary.
I had a cheat meal last night for dinner. I had a whopper burger and a fry. I got 105 an hour later. Wtf GD? When I eat well I get higher numbers and when I cheat I get a good one? *rolls eyes*
@shannonrnbsn Glad you were able to address or quickly! Did you just not feel well? My nurse didn't talk about this at all, so I wouldn't even know what to expect.
I woke up from my nap and felt woozy and shaky. I had a headache and suspected something was off. It was very obvious that something was wrong, so I guessed that it was that. When my sugar is high, my heart races and I sweat. I was very cold.
@shannonrnbsn I'm glad you were able to get it back up quickly! I think I felt something similar yesterday. I forgot to eat my mid afternoon snack since I had a filling lunch and by dinner I was shaky and felt dizzy. I didn't have my kit with me to check my blood but as soon I started eating it all went away. so scary!
@DarkCat I ate super healthy yesterday and my numbers sucked all day (150's). Today we went to dinner at a local pizza place and I ate a really good high protein salad from the salad bar, but also had 2 slices of pizza AND a slice of dessert pizza and my 2 hour number was 116. My lunch numbers were really good to otherwise I wouldn't have even dared the pizza.
In the subject of confusing numbers... We were out and about last night so I had pasta for dinner anticipating that it was one of those times that my number just wasn't going to be great. Nope, I was 98 after a bowl of chicken Alfredo... WHAT?! Yet I can't have a piece of toast with peanut butter in the morning without going above the mark even with insulin. WTF GD?! This would all just be a lot easier if my body followed the rules...sheesh
I had gastric bypass years ago so mostly I'm so used to it I don't even think about it anymore. However, last week as I was taking my blood sugar results for the week at the request of my dr, I had a crazy pregnant lady craving, ate a way too big bowl of my son's sugar crack cereal before I had my morning protein and about very shortly afterwards realized I made a very. big. mistake. I gave myself a dumping syndrome episode which involves reactive hypoglycemia. I checked a half hour after I'd eaten because I was hot, sweaty, heart palpitations, dizzy, etc. I'd taken my fasting sugar just before and it was 89. Half an hour later it was 173. Half an hour after that it was 72 and it kept going down. It took me a few hours to get it stable again and I spent the whole day cursing my total stupidity because I can't even remember the last time I did that to myself. At least having the blood sugar monitor handy when I did it really cleared up exactly why I feel like dying when I do make that mistake. I spent about five hours feeling like I wanted to vomit, pass out or sleep. I now feel vaguely ill when I even look at the cereal in the pantry so I think I'm in no danger of being tempted by that again for a nice long time. Blood sugar is a pain in the a**. I have had other moments where I've overdone it on something and was sure I was going to feel gross and nothing happened. I can sometimes eat something that should be totally within the "safe" parameters for me and it can randomly make me sick. Being pregnant only seems to up the randomness factor for what will/will not cause a bad reaction. (I'll totally own the stupid cereal mistake though, that was all me being stupid.)
Hi ladies, just checking in to see how everyone is doing?
Im at 37 units of insulin every night. Seriously the syringe is only 50 units so i may end up being that girl who needs 2 shots a night of insulin. Thank goodness we have only a few weeks left!
Also, just curious what is everyones go-to food or snack that is keeping them sane with this GD diet? mine is faye yogurt and fruit, kind bars (yum!!) and baybel cheeses.
Kind bars are the BEST. My favorite is the dark chocolate/peanut butter one. It really helps me kick that chocolate craving. I'm also eating a lot of Lara bars, carrots and spicy hummus and unsweetened applesauce.
Checking in with the gestational diabetes group. How is everyone doing? I think we are all hitting peak insulin resistance right about now. How are you handling it?
My doc increased my nightly insulin but am still avoiding after meal insulin but barely with my dinner numbers.
I'm at 37 weeks and have been experiencing frequent lows. I'm hoping this means they will drop my dosage of my glyburide down. At my next OB appt, my doc will establish my scheduled induction date. So just trucking along and waiting for contractions or Pitocin.
My numbers have actually been good, I lucked out and have been able to maintain this with diet and exercise.
Is everyone getting induced due to GD? I had read most women are around 38 weeks but when I asked my OB she said she wouldn't without signs of distress. Just wondering what everyone else's OBS think.
My numbers are still doing well with diet. I had a couple bad numbers that were strictly bad-choice related (my office threw a shower and only had pizza. I had an apple I probably didn't need with dinner last night which was already a teriyaki stir fry ), but my fasting numbers are still good so my doctor doesn't seem concerned. I am still losing weight, but baby is gaining. Baby measured 5.5 lbs last week at the 60th percentile for weight at week 34. Assuming he gains a 1/2 pound per week up to my due date and their estimates were accurate, he'll be 8.5 pounds at delivery. No one has talked to me yet about induction or delivering early, so I think the plan is just to keep on keeping on.
Mine is talking induction because the risk of placental decomposition and stillbirth increases after 38 weeks. I have twice weekly MBPPs where they keep track of my fluid and baby's heartbeat/contractions. So far, all have been reactive, which is perfect. If at any point the baby is non-reactive, then delivery becomes the goal.
My doctor has also talked about induction due to GD. She said if I were on insulin it would likely be 38-39 weeks (depending on the specific situation for the baby) but since I am managing with diet that she will most likely recommend during week 39 (assuming everything looks good on NSTs) and she does not want me to go past 40. We will talk dates for sure at my next appointment.
I've been managing with diet and exercise as well, and finally feel like I have a good handle on it (though I'm still drinking 40 oz of water at 3am every night to keep my fasting numbers down -- I'm afraid to stop!). I think I'm over the hormone peak by now (36w3d), which is encouraging. I'm also generally losing weight -- right now I'm about the same weight as I was when I was diagnosed at 27 weeks. But the baby is gaining (at least, my fundus measurements are increasing on schedule), so my midwives aren't worried about size.
The midwives I'm seeing seem to be pretty non-interventionist compared to what some others have experienced. I haven't had an ultrasound since 20 weeks -- they said it wasn't necessary, though if I request one I can have one -- and I'm still on biweekly appointments until 40 weeks. I haven't had any NSTs or anything like that. The midwives haven't mentioned induction at all, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be on the table until 41 weeks or later, which is how they handle all pregnancies. It makes me a little nervous that they're not keeping a closer eye on baby's size, but I'm trusting them to know what they're doing!
My numbers have been a little rough lately but dr said they aren't quite bad enough to medicate or do insulin. I have good days and bad and sometimes there's no rhyme or reason as to why they're high or low. Theyre taking baby at 38+5 here, but not just because of GD. Baby is measuring in the 60 something percentile and her belly is in the 98th! OB is not concerned at all though. Trying to do my very best and keep hanging in there until next week. DH has been given a long list of goodies to bring me in the hospital next week!!!
My numbers have been ok except fasting numbers were creeping up and they started talking about meds at night. I asked them for a little more time to tweak the diet and my husband made me a spreadsheet where I could track literally everything so we could keep seeing what works and what doesnt. Fasting level has come back down over the past 5 days and hoping to keep it there. (The dedication to this baby....I HATE peanut butter but the MFM group recommended trying peanut butter and graham crackers at night and test the fasting level 8 hours later. It works, so I am eating nightly peanut butter for this little cutie). If I had to be on meds, MFM wanted to talk induction at 39 weeks. Plus the baby's belly measured large at the ultrasound last Thursday (every thing else measured on time, belly measured two weeks ahead and weight was predicted to be around 6lbs right now). I talked to my OB yesterday and we agreed that, as long as twice weekly NSTs keep going well, ultrasound at 37 weeks looks good, and baby stays reactive, then he will let me keep going. I would prefer to avoid induction, avoid c-section, avoid pain meds, but stay open to whatever is necessary to help baby arrive safely.
Im not loving the NST's. I get so uncomfortable on the table they have us sit on/lay on and I dont want to move a lot or adjust because I dont want to mess the test up but last week when I was getting one done I got so hot and sweaty and dizzy and disoriented. My doctor thought my BP might have just crashed down (they didnt check) so they let me go. I started driving home and my vision wasnt great and I still felt yucky. Pulled over and tested my blood sugar and despite a good (regular) breakfast two hours earlier, my numbers were quickly falling under 80 so I think it was low blood sugar. You'd think they would have done a little more to make sure I was ok before letting me leave.
Also, I had some ketones in one of my urine samples so I asked the MFM if I should be testing for ketones and they said no because "generally diabetic moms do not test ketones". Remember some one else asking about ketones on here and thought that was interesting.
My doc agreed that I should taper down my glyburide. My levels have been dropping to the 70s when fasting and 100s post prandial, so I was concerned about having lows because when I wake up, I feel horrible. Now that I'm 37 weeks, I think my placenta is done being a twatwaffle. Hopefully anyway.
I got tearful at Walmart today because I wanted cherry poptarts. I don't even love them, just really wanted them for some reason. Having to be super strict with my diet the last 2-3 weeks or my numbers go insane. 37 weeks on Wednesday so only a few weeks left and I know I can make it. Just the more uncomfortable the pregnancy gets, the more I just want to eat yummy foods.
Why in the name of all that is good does 1/2 cup of ice cream have two carb servings to it?!?! Even the "healthy" stuff. WHO EATS HALF A CUP OF ICE CREAM??
ugh, me too! We are potty training my daughter right now and are using m&m's to reward her. It is taking all of my willpower to not just grab a huge handful and start chowing down!! I keep telli g myself 1more week!!
Yes @chesterdoodle !! Thank you for understanding. I measured out Reese's pieces the other day. 53 pieces equal one serving. All I wanted to do was eat the whole bag nonstop.
People talking about food is making me an angry pregnant lady. I want to eat it ALL.
Making a list of what I want after baby comes. Husband is prepared to go get me sushi from my favorite place and pick me up a fresh cookie cake. I plan on using those as motivation when labor sucks.
Not sure who all has had their babies on here and who all are still waiting. For the mommas who have delivered, how did it go with your GD? We're you induced, scheduled csection, or did baby come when it wanted? For the mommas still waiting on their little ones, how are you feeling?

I am still waiting, but have a c-section scheduled for June 14 at 38+3.
The last few weeks have been hard, but I can see the light & am very excited to get back to normal once baby is here. I've been craving all the fruit with the nice weather, but have greatly limited myself...I can't wait to hit up a local market & stock up on all the fresh goodies. I have my final appt at the diabetic clinic tomorrow to find out how my insulin may (or may not) impact my morning c-section, but since I only take it before bed I'm hoping it will be a non-issue.
I'm still waiting, with no plans right now for an induction or c-section (I'm due on Friday and am diet controlled). I DO, however, have grand plans for all the things I'm going to eat once baby arrives. The latest is to bake baby a birthday cake during early labor (in my favorite flavor, of course) and then to bring it along to the hospital for post-birth snacking! It will be glorious, and since baby will get to enjoy some by breastmilk proxy, I think it's fair to say that it's as much for baby as it is for me

Twins are here!! Frank (6lbs 15oz) and Avery (6lbs 4oz) arrived early monday morning at 4:26 and 4:33 after an induction that started at 2pm on sunday. I didnt have any issues with my delivery, it was actually easier than my first. Had an epidural to help out around 11pm and pushed for about 2.5 hours before frank arrived and avery quickly followed. Was very happy to avoid a csection. I felt great a couple hours later, lots of walking around the floor, easy getting in and out of bed, etc. my blood sugar levels have been totally fine and back to normal since delivery, they only had to test them twice after labor and ive been able go eat whatever the heck ive wanted these past few days!! Fueling up on carbs and calories to support breastfeeding these babies!
One thing to note is during my labor, i didnt eat from 7:15am sunday to about 5:15am on monday so they tested my sugars throughout and just gave me some juice or popsicles when my sugars got low. Dont be afraid to ask them to check - i knew when they were getting too low and felt so much better after i ate or drank something.
also They do test the babies blood sugar when they are born. Avery's was too low so they had fo give her formula (i was hoping to avoid that and stick to breastmilk) and had to spend a couple hours in the special care nursery for monitoring. She did great though and has been breastfeeding like a champ since!

so scary!
Somehow my two hour reading was still 103 (fasting was 82). What the heck, body? o.O;
