Gestational Diabetics Check-In

The purpose of this thread is for those who have been diagnosed to check in, provide updates in their journey, tips/tricks, and receive support. There are other threads to discuss the test itself, so this is not the place for that. Those who have not been diagnosed are welcome to read and comment, especially if it's in support of your fellow Bumpie, but this is not the place to discuss sugary treats, etc. Thanks for the support!

I have my first appointments (total of 3) scheduled. There is a 3 hour class to go over what GD is, the glucometer, diet and carb counting. I was a night shift nurse, so I never became proficient at carb counting, since people never ate at night. Plus my patients were ICU, so their diets weren't too advanced anyway. The second appointment is another anatomy scan, which opened more nerves (what if they find something my regular OB didn't find?). And finally, my last appointment is with the Mat-Fetal Spec to discuss my numbers and the US. Until my class, I'm just trying to limit how many carbs I'm taking in. I've read conflicting numbers on daily consumption, so for now I'm going conservative and staying around 150g/day. I'm trying to keep track with MyFitnessPal, since you can see totals on there.

  • I'm a little apprehensive about upcoming appointments as well. Tuesday I go for a two hour tell all about monitoring, getting the glucometer, etc. I've looked up GD diets online but it makes my head spin a little. I've never been super good at counting things (hello weight gain for the past 15 years) but myfitnesspal works really well for me and I think it's a great idea to track on there for a bit. At least til Tuesday when I get to the class. I'll try to stick with you and see how 150g/day works for me. I also know I need to increase my exercise again. I was doing really well there for a bit with walking a lot which also helped my muscles not hurt and helped me sleep at night. So I will try to up my 10,000 step game again. I do better when I challenge people so my friends and family are going to get tons of fitbit challenge requests.

    We can totally do this!
  • I don't know if you guys have had GD before but I've been through the ringer with it in my last pregnancy and now again with this one so if you need any help or are confused or want to know what to expect just let me know! I'm all too familiar with it.
  • Also, I think we should add recipes here if we find good ones! I remember getting so sick of grilled chicken and veggies 2 meals a day and a protein shake for breakfast. By the end I found a decent amount of GD friendly recipes you just have to get creative. Pinterest has a ton though!
  • YESSSSSSS!!!! Love that idea!!!
  • So glad to have a team of ladies on board!
  • I failed the glucose test early, so have been seeing my endocrinologist/diabetes nurse once a month since January.  At first, I was really upset thinking that I failed my husband and our child (this was a serious cry-fest for almost a week I think) but eventually realized that I am not a failure, and by watching carbs and glucose levels I'm doing what is best for our baby and making the best possible outcome for him.

For tracking, myfitnesspal sounds like a great idea.  I actually use a small notebook that I keep in my purse and write down the carbs in each meal and snack, my glucose readings after meals, and then total carbs for the day.  Each appointment, my nurse looks at the book to see how things are going and how different foods are affecting me.  So far, so good.  Testing (finger prick) after meals isn't as bad as I thought it would be either.  It's a habit now and just part of my day.  I still get some cravings for things that are sugary or carb-y, but I find ways to make them work - e.g., buy little ice cream cups so I can't eat a whole carton; make sugar free jello pudding.  My nurse okays a few splurges (like my birthday dinner) and I use those to make sure I'm able to curb any big craving.

My doctor warned me early on that I would likely need insulin shots, and to be ready for this.  It was scary at first, but I realize that the doctors know what is best and if they decide that I need that, I can do it for baby!  So far, my numbers are normal just controlling with diet/exercise so no insulin needed yet.  We'll see what happens in the next few months.  Baby is also measuring on time in terms of size, so my doctor is very happy with how things are going.

In addition to the endocrinologist, I had to see a perinatologist, but she says everything looks great.  Not sure when/if I need to see her again.  If I understood correctly, it will just depend on how things look as we move forward.

@June2016BabyW I have never been very good at counting/dieting either, but knowing that this counting could impact outcomes for our baby has actually made it really easy.

GD sounds and feels very daunting at the beginning, but I know that we all can do this!  Sorry for the novel! You've got this ladies!!!
  • @MrsAlliKat I had to do twice daily insulin shots because diet and exercise just weren't cutting it no matter how strict I was and after the first day or so it wasn't too bad. It doesn't hurt its just weird at first sticking yourself with a needle so if you do end up needing it, it's nothing to worry about. I think it sounds worse than it is

Glad to have you with us!!
  • Thanks for the encouragement, @alysemciver!  I think the scary part came in for me in that my body wouldn't do what it needs for baby and something could be wrong.  H used to give me allergy shots every week so I can deal with shots, but daily shots by myself will be different too.  I'm sure it does sound worse than it actually is!

And that's totally a valid fear! The doctors will monitor you and the baby so close though they won't let anything happen. I have weekly appointments, non stress tests and ultrasounds with specialist appointments every other week! With DS they saw my placenta started to calcify so they induced me right away. I got to go all the way up to 40 weeks though! He was a healthy 8.4 pound baby. I will say he had to do 48 of heel sticks and had a hard time regulating his blood sugar the first 2 days especially because I breast fed. The first 2 weeks we had to supplement with high calorie formula given to us by the hospital to make sure his blood sugar didn't get too low but his little body started regulating perfectly and we haven't had a problem since
  • I love this thread right now! Otherwise I would have been totally kicking rocks as I measured out  3/4 of a cup of cereal (who only eats 3/4 of a cup?!?!) and a cup of skim milk. I can see how quickly my carbs add up for a normal me day though. I certainly do love carb heavy food.

I likely will lose some weight now that I am not randomly binge eating. Will it be OK to lose weight in the end of the second trimester and in to the 3rd TRI? Definitely something I will ask doctor on Tuesday but I know that with watching what I am eating now, even sticking to a higher calorie count I am going to not be eating near as much food as I had been. Weekends are my worse and I can typically gain 4lbs over the weekend and then lose it again throughout the week. This pregnancy I am up 26lbs right now (only because I've lost 3lbs in the last couple of days). Any thoughts on stalling weight gain as we watch our carbs?
  • Does your doctor have you testing with keto strips when you pee? It was crucial for me. I wasn't getting enough food so the keto strips show that. I'd say if you're losing weight due to eating healthy foods and not starving yourself weight loss is ok. It depends on how much you have to lose too. Your doctor will know but if you feel like you're not getting enough food ask about the keto sticks. They're super cheap at the pharmacy and youll know if you're getting enough food or not

I'm curious to know also, since I'm actually still down 10 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight. It's my dream to keep under where I was, since I dropped 25 pounds total, but I realize it's more about what's healthy and not a number.
  • I am currently down 16 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight (which was overweight to start with).  Two appointments ago my doctor told me to stop losing weight and to eat more.  Between weeks 20 and 24 I gained 2 pounds and she was happy with that and told me to keep it up.  I think that it really varies by person, so it is important to make sure you are following your plan and doctors are happy with your progress and how the baby is doing.
  • What's everyone been eating? I had my first official full GD diet today. Protein shake for breakfast with some berries, half an apple and walnuts for snack and brussel sprouts with grilled pork for lunch. Now I just want a giant cupcake
  • Anyone with a Fitbit, message me and we can become buddies :) I'm beyond bad at remembering to put mine bad on after a shower (Fitbit flex) so I really suck at getting in my steps. BUT!!! If it will help encourage any of us to keep ourselves active and moving for these next few months, I'm all for it! :)

I wish I had one, I keep trying to convince myself to get one but I haven't

I found some low-carb, high-fiber tortilla wraps by mission, and have been having egg and sausage wraps and buffalo chicken wraps. For dinner, I usually have meat (chicken, fish, etc) with a roasted veggie. For snacks, I've been eating cheese, veggie chips, granola bars and a high fiber cereal. Milk has been my liquid carbs. I just had my first appointment and they told me I can have 240 carbs a day: 30 for breakfast and both snacks and 45 for lunch and dinner. This is totally doable. The last couple days I'd been under 100-125.

I also love the mission low carb tortillas.  For breakfast i have them as breakfast tacos with egg, cheese, and a breakfast meat.  I also found some Jimmy Dean fritatas at Sam's club for when I'm in a rush.  For lunch,  I like the tortillas with tuna or chicken salad, a salad with meat/protein, or leftovers.  If I'm craving fast food, Chick-fil-a nuggets and a salad are my go to . Snacks are usually cheese, almonds, protein shakes, or cottage cheese with berries.  For dinner we often do a meat and a roasted veg.

I hope everyone is finding food that they like!
  • So glad to see this thread. Not because we all have GD, but because I just found out today that my numbers were high and I have to go Saturday to see the doctor and plan the next course of action, and I already have cried thinking about how much I'm already over chicken. It was all I could eat for the first 14 weeks. So glad to see a supportive thread on GD, with great food ideas.  I will definitely be checking back here often
  • This is day 1 of mt GD diet since i saw the dietician yesterday. Scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast with a cup of skim milk, fiber one bar, half a cup of Greek yogurt, and a breakfast bar for my snacks, and I just got back from fresh market with a Greek salad (sans dressing) and a edamame, cranberry and feta cheese blend. My body doesn't know how to process healthy foods. I get a little excited to use my glucometer and see my numbers stay low which reinforces the healthy choices for sure. I even woke up earlier today than normal to eat a healthy breakfast and get a 15 minute walk in. Not sure what to do for dinner, just trying to get the hang of this. I think it might be tough for me to keep calories, protein, and crabs all matching up. But will keep trying at it.

The doctor I work with brought Wendy's lunch in for a meeting and tried to get me to eat chicken nuggets and French fries. I said "damnit doctor, im diabetic!" And he said " so am I" and then ate it all.

I do have to say that as of now I am not having my normal afternoon crash. This diet was totally something I needed to do anyway!

Foods like that are okay once in a while. For the next four weekends, we have birthday parties or my baby shower. You better believe I'm eating cake. It's all about moderation. I think one side in one meal a week would be okay. So get grilled chicken nuggets and a small/medium fry. You can do this!!!
  • Ahhhh wish I could have low carb tortillas but I have celiacs as well (literally what food is left on this planet I can have?!) so I'll be on a mission to find a GF low carb tortilla
  • What is everyone's sugar level supposed to be? My doc told me under 90 at fasting in the morning, and under 120 1 hour after a meal. I've been doing pretty well, but I got one today that was 137. This is my second pregnancy, but didn't have it with the first. All of this is so new to me.

  • Today's my first day with keto strips and taking my blood at scheduled times. The numbers are over the mark. :( Dr said if I need to be put on meds they'll induce at 39 weeks. Anyway, what are your favorite protein bars?

Secretly, I will after I get to stop charring what I'm eating. The first week we have to write everything down along with our levels and send that in for the dietician to review. And I don't want to be judged. AND, doc totally had a large chicken nugget and large fry. That man does not know portion control.

I have candy in my office and have been eyeing the bowl of Reese's peanut butter cups in egg form all day. I work with people with addictions and they are making fun of me saying now I know how they feel.

@alylove11 my fasting level should be under 95, 1 hour under 130, 2 hour under 120, and an average of under 110 for the week.
  • My dietician said that my morning reading should be less than 95, less than 120 after breakfast and I think less than 95 the rest of the day, including after lunch and dinner. So far all my readings have been good, but I'm also terrified to deviate from my eating plans so... Welcome to Salad Life, I guess? I bought a bag of jelly beans right before I got the diagnoses ;.; I'm too scared to eat even one. I'm still wrestling with the "What could I have done differently??" guilt.

I literally had a dream last night that I went out for lunch, bought Taco Bell for myself and my hubs, then he didn't want it, so I was like "WHAT DO I DO WITH ALL THIS FOOD I CAN'T EAT." Then for some reason it was randomly my birthday (which isn't until August) and everyone wouldn't stop trying to feed me cake.

So uh. Yeah. Apparently I am even stressing about this in my sleep.

On the up side, my husband has been incredibly amazing and supportive. He made me breakfast yesterday and today and packed me a lunch. Which also makes me feel guilty because I've been such a slug around the house for the last 6 months. He is seriously doing like triple Spousing duty and I'm like... going to bed at 8:00, good luck with the laundry I loaded and didn't finish -.-.

So far my eats are looking like:

Breakfast: 1 scrambled egg and peanut butter toast, Coffee with cream

    Snack: 3 graham crackers

Lunch: Chicken salad wrap on a low carb wrap, baby carrots, fruit cup

Snack: whole wheat Peanut butter crackers

Dinner: Some kind of lean protein (chicken and salmon so far) some kind of green non-starchy veggie (lots of broccoli) and a small amount of rice or a bowl of salad with fruit and chicken.

Yesterday for lunch I did go out with a friend and had a salad at McAllister's Deli, but I looked up the nutrition facts online beforehand to count carbs. I wish you could adjust myfitnesspal to reflect pregnant nutritional values and pregnant with GB nutritional values :/ You other gals that are tracking on apps, how are you dealing?

You can totally change the values. Go to settings, Profile, Goals and then calorie/macronutrient. You can set your percentages to help you count. MCALISTERS DELI?! Where are you from? And my H is doing everything yours is doing. I too have struggled with the guilt, but my H takes his role as H very seriously (we're religious), so this is something that he does without hesitation or complaint because he knows I'm growing him a baby.
  • Thank you so much for starting this thread! I was so upset when i found out i had gestational diabetes. I didnt have any issues with my first pregnancy and have been having a really hard time with this one, including severe nausea for the first 16 weeks. This time its twins so i knew it would be harder but now i cant even have ice cream! Boo!

Couple of questions for the group:

    1) any one else passing all the after meal tests but failing the first morning test? I am going in this afternoonto the GD clinic to be assessed to see if i need insulin in the mornings.

    2) anyone eating sugar free ice creams/ foods?

    3) anyone have previous experience with GD and can share if they ended up with preeclampsia, preterm labor or csection too? I know it increases the risks for the those (or at least there seems to be a correlation there) and was really hoping to avoid bedrest or csection. Just interested in hearing others experiences. Hoping to keep these twins in as long as possible but i know with GD its likely i may go earlier.

Thanks again for starting this thread! Really nice to have this support and know we're not alone.
  • 1) my GD RN says that our placentas produce a hormone that makes morning/fasting levels high, no matter what you do. You might need an oral med - glyburide - to help. They don't always go straight to insulin.

    2) I am staying away, because of the artificial sweeteners.

    3) this is my first pregnancy and first time dealing with anything diabetes.

Im so glad you like this thread!!!
  • Echo what @shannonrnbsn said about morning glucose levels. The only thing they warned us about the glyburide is you cant have it if you have a sulfa allergy.

I'm struggling most with meal planning. I don't usually like to plan out meals because I get frustrated if it is time to eat and not what I'm hungry for. Last night I got home from work and ate two breakfast burritos, which fit in my carb count, but when I took my test two hours later I was at 122 instead of under the 120 they want to see me at. Ridiculously bummed about that but learned I can't have two burritos and then go sit on the couch for two hours. I also have a little trouble checking my levels at exact intervals (on the hour) because of my work. I can't just stop in the middle of a session with a client and check my blood sugar. I'm not sure how much of a difference 10-20 minutes makes on levels. For some reason I keep wanting to be so rigid about this and follow every exact rule. Maybe just until I can get a hang of it.

I LOVE myfitnesspal for helping me track things and it has made eating out a little easier. (Had McDonalds salad for lunch).

I'm also sort of glad for the diagnosis because it is forcing me to eat healthier things like salads and veggies and eat more frequently (I was skipping meals and then binge eating at night) and I know my baby needs all the good stuff. So for my stubborn head, it is apparently the kick in the ass I needed to do things right.
  • Right there with you sister. They told me the timing mattered if we were talking an hour's difference (i.e. One hour post meal vs two hours).
  • @shannonrnbsn again, I adore you

    *hunger games salute*

I feel you.  I walked out of a meeting today to go check my after lunch blood sugar and I felt like EVERY EYEBALL IN THE ROOM was right on top of me. "Don't mind me, just sneaking back to my desk... for no reason..." I'm just hoping that everyone is going to assume that I'm just pregnant and ducking out of meetings to pee. :p

I feel you on the meal planning. DH is saving my life with breakfast and lunch, but I'm on the hook for dinner. Tonight I made a boneless skinless chicken breast with a slice of avacado, tomato and swiss cheese baked on it, a quarter cup of brown rice and roasted broccoli.
  • @shannonrnbsn again, I adore you
    Happy to help!
  • Your dinner sounds yum! I had quinoa, grilled chicken, mozzarella cheese, broccoli in cheedar sauce and a slice of bread. I'm embarrassed at how good it ended up tasting and how filling it was.

Missed my calorie goal today (was about 400 calories under) but rocked my carb, protein, fat, and fiber goals!

I'm Not going to lie, I'm a little jealous you guys can have a slice of bread, or a breakfast burrito or anything like that. It was like this with DS1 too but I can't even have so much as breadcrumbs on chicken even when I eat it with a big plate of green veggies. A touch of brown rice with tons of lean meat and non carby veggies shoots my blood sugar up to 192. I feel like I don't know what the hell is wrong with me. There's no moderation, I literally can't have anything, even a sprinkle of anything. For real I'm genuinely happy you guys don't have the same experience as me but it just makes me wonder wtf did I do to get this?

ETA all of the above is while on twice daily insulin too
