@June2016BabyW Nada. Which is so strange because they are a holistic office that is all about the "whole you". They are really relaxed there which is cool, but I'm getting tired of reminding them of stuff. I called about taking the glucose test, and they responded, "Oh yeah, you are getting close to 3rd tri. This is where you need to go, and didn't tell me what to eat or when to stop eating. Granted, I have a LO, but that was like 3 years ago when I took the test. So, I called back to get that info. This last time I asked about the Tdap shot. They had the same response, "Oh yeah... about that...you can do that anytime now."
So did they just do the one hour test? Or did they do a two hour test? If they are counting you as GD based on the one hour test, I've never seen any research that would back this method up since there are so many people who don't pass that test but go on to pass the three hour test that is under stricter control.
Any info we can give you that would help, we would love to share. I can't imagine being diagnosed and have little to no direction.
They only did the 1 hour test and said anyone who fails would be treated as GD. Once I got my glucometer, my numbers have been less than 90 fasting, and under 120 within 1 hour of eating, except when I didn't watch my sugars. When they were elevated, they would get to 130's after 1 hour of eating. I also got a stomach bug and noticed my numbers went up a bit, and I was told that illness can affect numbers. I would appreciate any info you could give me!
YEAH WOW. Sister, that is HORRIBLE. I have been referred to a Maternal Fetal Specialist to monitor everything. I have extra ultrasounds and non-stress tests. You really should call and request a referral (if needed) to a specialist. The risk for larger babies from GD can complicate delivery by making you more at risk for pre-eclampsia and stillbirth. Not to scare you, but your OB office does not sound like they are serious enough.
I'm with @shannonrnbsn I've also been scheduled for extra ultrasounds to make sure baby is growing at the correct rate. It stinks to get diagnosed after only one test, right?
If you scroll up some, PP's have given some guidance on what they've been told by their nutritionists. Mine gave pretty similar guidance but a little different. I'm supposed to have 1 carb "choice" at breakfast time, 3 at lunch and dinner, and 2 at snacks between breakfast and lunch and lunch and dinner.
I added up the max amounts for each meal and snack and shifted my macros in My Fitness Pal until the total carb numbers were under the max value I'm allowed to have in a day. Maxing out each meal puts me at 190, but I like to be cautious so I set my goal to 160.
It sounds like one of the things your doctors missed out on telling you is that your body converts carbohydrates to sugars. That's what made your glucometer go bananas over a cheeseburger and fries. Fries are basically delicious toasty carb-sticks. :P So not only should you be watching your sugars (which I'm sure you already are) but also bread, pasta, starchy vegetables (like potatoes but also corn and peas), and basically anything wheat derived that makes you happy and brings you joy :P . It's why you see so many of us crying into our perpetual salad bowls.
They also gave me a little card to keep in my wallet on label reading that says:
1. Check the serving size and number of servings on whatever you're eating 2. Ignore the % Daily Value 3. Find TOTAL CARBOHYDRATE 4. TOTAL CARBOHYDRATE is the sum of all the sugars and starches, sugar alcohols and fiber. 5. Do the following math: Total Carb: ______gm - Dietary Fiber:-_____gm = gm Carb to count: _______gm.
I just got the low down on the extra tests today when I saw my OB. I knew about seeing the MFM for another ultrasound which I am going to one Friday but then my OB was talking about twice a week NSTs and every other appointment ultrasounds or something. I lost track quickly. I didn't have the brain capacity to retain it all right now and I figure we will go back over it all when I see him again in three weeks.
Starting next week i am alternating ultrasounds and NSTs each week.
Im increasing insulin again since im still in the high 90's for fasting sugars. I was also told i need to eat a more substantial bedtime snack. my nutritionist recommended yasso greek yogurt bars, picked up some mint choc chip which i am super excited to try tonight!
@shannonrnbsn how many times a day do you have to take? Pens or syringes? Sorry to hear you have to deal with insulin too.
Had an evening snack of an Atkins chocolate bar last night around 830. Was usually timing my night snacks around 10/1030. Woke up this morning and tested at 830....79. The Atkins snack was super low in carbs. I just don't understand the constant fluctuations. And it seems like even when I am following the diet strictly that my numbers jump around. Blech. I hate the lack of control.
@shannonrnbsn glad the morning fasting level was good!!
My fasting in the morning is back btwn 100-110. Walking the dog in the morning doesn't help anymore. Like I became immune to it. It actually raised it the last two mornings. The night is a killer!

The facking placenta does this to you. Apparently it gets jealous that it's the fat friend.
Well hello there ladies! I went to my 32 week checkup today and dr told me I don't technically have gestational diabetes but I was so close to having it that they're going to treat me like I do (I failed one of 4 draws and all the others were 1 or 2 points under the cutoff) . I start checking my blood in the morning twice daily and meet with a dietician on Monday. Glad I will have y'all!!!
I haven't noticed artificial sodas spiking but I do know water makes every thing better. I still drink one or two diet sodas a day for the caffeine but water is awesome.
Sames in the diet soda...are you having anything to eat with the soda? When I think of foods is typically like to eat while drinking a soda they're all foods that could spike my sugars. That's the only thing that comes to mind!
You can't pry diet sodas from my hands at this point so I am hoping there is another culprit. I need some joy in my diet right now. And the caffeine-the delicious life sustaining caffeine.....
For example I had a burger (35 carbs) a garden side salad and a diet soda. I didn't drink all the soda. After one hour it was 118. I need to be under 120 after one hour. I barely made the cut off. So was it the soda? Or the burger?
Did the side salad have any croutons? Or did you use dressing on it that could have been full of sugar?
Also, your numbers are slightly more conservative than mine. I need to be under 120 two hours after eating. So I think your 118 after only an hour is really good!!
Yes my doctor's are very strict! It sucks. I have to be under 120 in one hour and under 90 for fasting. The salad did have crouton's and I had ranch so I guess it played a small factor.
So I just started checking my blood today. Dr told me to eat normally (without going crazy) until Monday so that when I meet with the dietitian they can see where my spikes are. I got a 99 for fasting. 127 after 1 hour very low carb lunch. 104 after two hours. I don't know what exactly my numbers should be.. I'm following the glucose test paper she gave me that told me my results and where they should've been after each hour. Do these numbers sound ok?? I feel so lost!

Your fasting sounds a little high even for someone with GD and your 1 hour is ok for someone with GD but it is high for someone who is borderline having a conservative lunch. I'd report back to my dr with the numbers or your specialist because it sounds like full blown GD. Obviously I'm not a doctor but I'd definitely check in with them
Well I was hoping I wouldn't have to post in this one... (no offense just really didn't want GD)! I got my results today from my 3 hour and well I failed so now I have a meeting Friday to discuss diet and plan.
I am still in the stage of this isn't fair! I have been trying so hard to do everything right and have been eating healthy and drinking nothing but water.
@jmohio sorry to hear you have GD too. This is a great thread though, lots of support and info. If you go a couple pages back @June2016BabyW listed some of the positives we've experienced since being diagnosed and sticking to the GD diet. It definitely made me feel bette. Plus, you'll feel better once you meet with your specialist and get all the nutrition/testing info. Its really not that bad!
Had 3 missed call from my OB today...turns out it was to tell me about an appointment they squeezed in for me tomorrow to talk about going on insulin I know everything will be okay and it'll all be worth it, I just could use some uneventfullness for awhile!
Just discovered Fiber One protein bars. Also I was able to have milk in the morning without my numbers spiking with Fair Life milk. 50% more protein and 50% less sugar. It has a weird aftertaste though. I like mixing it (2 equal parts) with Fair Life chocolate milk in the evenings. Lots of protein with way less sugar.

Carb choices are measured like this:
0-5 Carbs = Free
6-10 = 1/2 choice
11-20 = 1 choice
21-25 = 1 1/2 choice
26-35 = 2 choices
36-39 = 2 1/2 choices
40-50 = 3 choices

I hope that helps some! Good luck
@june2016babyw it all starts after you get put on meds or reach a certain number of weeks.

Morning fasting was 85, so I'd say the meds are working so far! Woo hoo!
That's great news!
Glad they seem to be working for you!
